Massage therapy has been shown to pro-vide relief from

stress. Research studies show mas-sage therapy actually boosts the body’s immune system, which can become compromised from extended periods of stress. Massage also can lower heart rate and blood pressure, relax muscles and increase endorphins all of which will help manage the damage that chronic stress can create.

These days, healthcare is becoming more about self care. So many people are looking for

alternative wellness modalities to im-prove and maintain healthy lifestyles. And, massage ther-apy is one of those wellness choices that provide not only a relaxing experience but also offers docu-mented physiological and emotional ben-efits. In today’s fast-

paced world, our busy lifestyles can take a toll on our physical and mental well being. Allow-

ing our bodies to relax and unwind is now more important than ever.

The benefits of massage ther-apy range from enhancing one’s energy and sense of well-being, to releasing muscle tension that can contribute to headaches, hypertension, chronic inju-ries and medical disorders and conditions symptoms. Massage therapy promotes relaxation, the bodies’ own healing pro-cesses and has become widely accepted as a valuable and ef-fective form of natural, holistic healthcare.

Through massage therapy, we

become more aware of our daily stress levels. This allows us to recognize what true relaxation feels like so we can more easily recreate it for ourselves before stress becomes chronic and dam-aging. Having this relief from stress increases our energy levels and vitality, as well as enhances our ability to cope with and en-joy our daily lives.

Massage therapy can improve posture by allowing the body to reinforce healthy and natural movements. Many aches and pains are due to poor posture. Whether we are driving, working at a desk or even just standing still, poor posture can contribute to a number of physical aches

and pains. Over time, these habits can cause increased body stress and breakdown.

The long-term effects of mas-sage therapy are much more than just skin deep. Massage plays an important role in training the body how to relax. Not only will massage therapy help relax internal muscles through deep tissue techniques, it can also help individuals become aware of their daily stress levels. Once the body recognizes what true relaxation feels like, the mind can then easily recreate it before stress becomes chronic and dam-aging. Having this relief from stress can enhance our ability to cope with and enjoy life.

Massage therapy helps you

relax, re-align and rejuvenate. There are many positive

aspects to receiving massage therapy on an ongoing basis, and with the busy lives we lead, we can all benefit from a little stress-management. More Amer-icans are turning to therapeutic massage treatment to provide relaxation, relieve tension as-sociated with the daily stresses of their busy lives or simply to help maintain good health and achieve a balanced lifestyle. Oh, and let’s not forget how great it feels to be treated by a profes-sional massage therapist.

You may not have heard of cold laser therapy before, or you may have tried it and

not gotten the results you wanted. Different classes of lasers classify them into their strength. Class III, which until recently was the standard for cold laser therapy, operates on less than 500 miliwatts. For therapeutic purposes, a class IV laser operates on greater than 500 miliwatts.

This is beneficial because the more watts that are delivered stimu-lates more healing to an area in less treatment time. You spend less time having the laser stimulate an area

and less trips to the doctor to have it treated. Class IV laser has greater physiological effects that result in biochemical changes with the cells.

Simply put, laser therapy reduces pain, increases wound and tissue

healing, stimulates regenera-tion of peripheral nerves and reduces scar tissue formation.

There are many complex biochemical reactions that happen within the cells that are stimulated by the laser to make this possible. Laser therapy increases ATP pro-

duction or energy production within each cell, angiogenesis or forma-tion of new capillaries to damaged tissues, reduction of inflammatory prostaglandins while increasing

anti-inflammatory prostaglandin release, stimulation of immune cells, increased endorphin relief, increased nitric oxide production and blocking of C-fibers or nerve fibers carrying pain signals to the brain.

Laser therapy is painless, drug free and a surgery-free option for treating your chronic pain condi-tions. It is also very effective for increasing healing and reducing recovery time following surgery or after an acute injury. Laser therapy quickly and effectively relieves pain for plantar fasciitis, fibromyalgia, arthritis, sciatica, sprains, strains, low back pain, disc issues, shoulder pain, neck pain, tennis elbow and many more conditions.

Acupuncture as an effective treatment for painby Chris LAndoLL

Pain is one of the greatest challenges that humans are faced with.

Despite tremendous advances in so many fields, the problems of acute and chronic pain continue to persist. Arthritis, carpal tun-nel, headaches, tense or sore neck and back muscles are part of most people’s daily life.

I became an acupuncturist in part because acupuncture can be a profoundly effective treat-

ment for almost any type of pain. Patients and mainstream medical providers are increas-

ingly turning to acu-puncture for even the most stubborn cases.

Whether you’re look-ing for a drug-free al-ternative or a comple-ment to other therapies such as chiropractic, physical therapy or conventional treat-ment, acupuncture has an important and

unique role to play in healing and pain relief. Admittedly, it is a bit of a different concept at

first. But most people are fasci-nated to learn how it works and are often very surprised with the experience.

Acupuncture produces real physiological changes that have been documented. West-ern science has demonstrated that acupuncture points are areas of increased electrical sensitivity, which when stimu-lated signal the brain through the nervous system to release various biochemicals. These include endorphins - the body’s natural pain-killers, and various neurotransmitters that regu-

In addition to systemic effects, acupuncture can work locally at the site of pain or injury. The same myofascial trigger points - those painful knots in your mus-cles - that a massage therapist might work on, were described by Chinese medicine centuries ago as Ah Shi points. Acupunc-turists have specific techniques that can produce powerful re-lease of these knots, providing not only instantaneous pain relief but also restoration of function and range of movement.

Despite the difficulties of designing rigorous scientific studies of a complex therapy like acupuncture, researchers are increasingly coming to realize its effectiveness. Just last year, the National Institute of Health re-leased the results of a high-qual-ity, five-year meta-analysis of acupuncture for a variety of pain conditions. The findings showed a clear advantage for acupuncture over placebo treatment, as well as many standard pain-relieving medications.

If there were any remain-ing doubts, we can look to the country’s leading hospitals and cancer care centers, which have embraced acupuncture and other integrative therapies. All 18 of

US News and World Report’s top hospitals now have acupuncture and complementary medicine programs.

The benefits of acupuncture can be immediate. Lasting relief can take some time, especially with chronic conditions. A skilled acupuncturist sees patients as unique and takes the time to get to the root of a problem. If you are wondering if these therapies may be an option for you, feel free to ask your local acupunc-turist. Many will offer a com-plimentary phone or in-person consultation.

From an Eastern medicine perspective, the acupuncture points, foods and herbs one

chooses has a big impact on weight loss. They directly influence the Qi (pronounced Chi) of the spleen and liver systems in treating the root im-balances that cause weight gain.

From a Western perspective, acupuncture and Oriental medicine have been shown to have an ef-fect on the function of the nervous system, endocrine system, diges-tive system, food cravings and metabolism. All of which can help to energize the body, maximize the absorption of nutrients, regulate

elimination, control overeating, suppress the appetite and reduce anxiety.

Botanical herbs can be used to influence the body’s metabolism in different ways. Most people who need to lose weight would like to have their metabolism run more efficiently. There are a number of herbs that can help people in their quest for a healthier, more efficient metabolism in order to ensure that efforts to lose weight are blessed with success.

There are three types of herbs that can assist people trying to lose weight. The first type of herb is the type that “transforms phlegm”

in Eastern medicine terminology. These herbs can help the body to process fats more efficiently and prevent the accumulation of un-healthy fats and fluids in the body. Some herbs in this class that may assist weight loss include citrus aurantium, immature citrus peel and magnolia bark. Glechoma and hawthorn berry can also help by “transforming phlegm.”

Detoxifying bitter herbs are another class of plant that can as-sist with weight loss. These herbs tend to reduce inflammatory, acidic conditions in the body that often trigger the cravings people have for inordinate quantities of unhealthy

food. These herbs are particularly useful in people who tend to have voracious appetites for spicy, oily and sweet foods.

They also may have a tendency towards acne or oily skin and a slightly reddish complexion. These herbs include rhubarb, coptis and scute. Other herbs can be used to control and balance the emotional conditions that trigger overeating.

For those who find themselves eating out of stress, sadness, depres-sion, anxiety or PMS, they can find that these herbs balance out their emotional life and reduce their crav-ings for food. These herbs include magnolia bark, bupleurum root, mint, zizyphus and biota seeds, and longan fruit. Other supplements

that can assist in a healthy weight loss program are kelp, apple cider vinegar, vitamin B6 and flaxseed oil. Drinking green tea regularly can also be quite helpful.

It is important to remember that all of these supplements are ben-eficial for promoting weight loss because they promote a healthy metabolism, energy level, digestion and mental attitude, but that dietary and lifestyle changes are crucial in order to see the results that you want. Nevertheless, Eastern medi-cine can be a great ally in the quest to shed pounds more efficiently.

Functional Medicine approachThere are number of factors with

hormonal links to weight gains from a functional medicine perspec-tive. All of these could be evaluated

using saliva and blood testing. Here are some of the highlights.

Hormones and weight gain:• Vitamin D deficiency, which causes visceral fat gain. This could be both D2 and D3 typically 20-40 percent below the normal range. • Insulin Resistance/Metabolic Syn-drome. This typically causes weight gain in abdomen. The measures will be insulin and HbA1c, cortisol and stress.• Thyroid deficiency, which causes overall general gain and low me-tabolism. This is a very common amongst women over 40 years old. The measures will be lab testing and finding the level of TSH and T3 and T4.• Then there is the estrogen factor

The defi nition of health usu-ally describes a condition of one’s mind and body that is

free from illness, injury or pain. The World Health Organiza-tion expands the defi ni-tion of health to include social and economic environment, the physi-cal environment, and the person’s individual characteristics and behaviors.

A major contributor to the lack of health in the United States is obesity. Recent reports from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention state that 68 percent of

adults over the age of 20 are either overweight or obese.

Obesity is defi ned as being gross-ly fat or overweight. The most com-

mon method of assess-ing obesity is the use of Body Mass Index. The index correlates height and weight. An adult who has an index between 25 and 29.9 is considered overweight. An adult who has an index of 30 or higher is considered obese. Your primary healthcare pro-vider is a great resource

to help you defi ne your condition.Obesity has obvious health prob-

lems … and it will cost you money. The President’s Council on Fitness, Sport and Nutrition compiled a few obesity facts:

• Obesity-related medical conditions cost our nation nearly $150 billion every year and account for 16-18 percent of our total healthcare costs or one in every six dollars spent.• The annual cost of being over-weight is $524 for women and $432 for men; annual costs for being obese are even higher: $4,879 for women and $2,646 for men. • Recent reports project that by 2030, half of all adults, 115 million in the United States, will be obese.

Poor nutrition and physical inactiv-ity are the most common pathways

leading to obesity. You can chose to make better food choices and you can chose to be more active.

How much activity is enough? The US Department of Health and Human Services suggests “adults perform at least two-and-a-half hours a week of moderate-intensity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorous-intensity aerobic physical activity, or an equivalent combina-tion of moderate- and vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. Children and adolescents should do one hour or more of physical activity daily.”

Physical Therapists can play a role with your activity and exercise plan. Physical therapist’s extensive knowledge of health conditions

allows them to examine people of all ages and abilities and design safe and effective physical activ-ity programs that help establish life-long habits of physical activity. Physical therapists can perform an evaluation and devise safe exercise programs that increase strength and cardiovascular endurance, restore flexibility and reduce pain when it exists. Further information regarding safe exercise tips can be found on the American Physical Therapy Associations consumer website, www.MoveForwardPT.com.

Chose to get out there and be ac-tive for your health and well-being.

[ healthy from page 10] or estrogen dominance factor. This typically causes weight gain in hips, thighs and breasts. The mea-sures here are the levels of estrogen and progesterone.• The androgen imbalance, which causes loss of lean muscle and as a result fat replaces these muscles. The measures here will be find-ing the level of testosterone and DHEA.

It is true that diet and exercise play an important role for so many people who go through unex-plained weight gain. But hormones play a significant role on many people particularly when they are in their late 30s and early 40s.

A careful analysis of other symp-toms, in addition to the lab mea-surement, would give a very solid approach in identifying the cause of the weight gain. The symptoms can create a roadmap for appropriate treatment and reduce the risk of the metabolic syndrome, avoiding the onset of type II diabetes.

BY TERESA RICHTER

Recently, testosterone has been getting a generous amount of media attention.

You may be wondering what all the hype is about? Simply put testoster-one is a hormone.

Testosterone is an important part of a men’s overall health. Testos-terone is the main sex hormone for men and is produced in the testicles. Testosterone can help maintain bone density, lean body mass, muscle strength, red blood cell production, sex drive and sperm production. Levels can fall with age resulting in symptoms such as hair loss, erectile dysfunction, low

sex drive, diffi culty concentrating, memory impairment, insomnia and muscle loss. You may have heard the term “andropause.” Andropause is referring to the decline of hor-mones with age for men, similarly as women go through menopause.

Testosterone plays a large role in the formation of lean body mass. You may have noticed a little more body fat developing around your midsection or diffi culty losing weight. Ways of increasing tes-tosterone naturally include: lifting free weights heavy enough that you can only manage about eight reps, resting one minute in between and then repeating three times. Also,

sleeping at least eight hours per night is an important way to boost testosterone because testosterone and growth hormone are produced during the seventh and ninth hours of sleep. Levels of testosterone are generally the highest in the morn-ing. High levels of stress can inhibit testosterone in men. Cortisol can interfere with the way testosterone binds to its receptors making it less effective.

Sometimes men produce the right amount of testosterone but it gets converted to other hormones. When testosterone converts to the stronger form of dihydrotestosterone, it in-creases the chances of men devel-

We all know what it is. We live in it every day. We may not realize however

the toll it takes on our body. Those back pains at work, a

massive headache at your desk, slumped over posture you observe in a picture you were in, that oh so familiar knee or hip pain on a run - these all occur because our body is out of alignment in the fi eld of grav-ity. What can you do to help the pain you may be experiencing?

Structural Integration is a pro-found fi eld of bodywork that addresses the fascia or connective

tissue. Fascia is the most prevalent connective tissue in the body. It sur-rounds muscles, tendons, ligaments and organs. Through gravity, activi-ties and aging, fascia can become bound restricting movement and/or caus-ing pain. Fascia possess a unique plasticity quality making it what we call “the organ of form.” It’s important to work with a specialist, such as structural integra-tor, in which the fascia is lengthened and stretched resulting in ease of movement and signifi cant postural changes. Remember, for every bit

that we are out of alignment in the fi eld of gravity it causes more pain

in our joints and muscles. View the pictures of an 85-year-old women after completing Soma Neu-romuscular Integration, a form of structural integra-tion.

So after your fascia is lengthened and stretched, then what? Does it stay? Well yes and no. Remem-

ber that fascia has plasticity charac-teristics meaning that after working with a structural integrator, the results last much longer than typical

massage and other manual therapies. But the real hall-mark of this work is the integration. Olivia Ireland, a Soma practitioner, said it well: “Integration is needed for bodywork to have deep meaning. If a practitioner works the back, spine or neck for example, without addressing the corresponding pattern in front, then you work forever on the same client and on the same issues. This is an important distinction to make about Soma and other forms of structural integration. By bringing the whole body into relationship with every part of itself, true wellness can be achieved.”

So be aware of how you are moving in gravity. Alternate what shoulder you always put your purse on and observe when you are driving if your shoulders creep up around in your ears.

Visit your local structural integrator who can help you with body awareness, chronic pain and movement education. I look forward to assisting you in your endeavors for true wellness.

[ testosterone from page 12] [ gravity from page 12] oping male pattern baldness and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Having your testosterone levels checked by your doctor is the first step to see if your hormone levels have declined with age. It is a simple blood test that can be performed by a medical or naturopathic doctor. Once the levels are established and if there is a deficiency, your doctor can prescribe some testosterone to restore your physiological levels back to that of a younger man.

Eating a varied diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits that is low in bad fats and sugar, getting adequate amounts of nutrients including Vitamin D, regular exercise, proper amounts of sleep and stress reducing activities are key to improving overall health and helping you to feel young again. Hormone replace-ment therapy can increase levels of testosterone back to levels of a younger man giving you an overall im-proved sense of well being, better sleep, more youth-ful, increased sex drive and the ability to build lean muscle mass and lose belly fat more easily.
