HEALTH & RECREATION POLICIES & PROCEDURES
Discipline
Staff do not expect to have to manage any “discipline” problems in a tertiary education environment. You have competed with a large number of people for a place in this course so it is expected you will have a high degree of self-motivation to want to learn and participate in class activities. It is your responsibility to successfully complete the course and to contribute to a congenial learning environment for your fellow classmates.
Eating, Drinking, Smoking, Mobile Phones and Personal Music Devices
It is College Policy that eating and drinking are NOT permitted in any classroom or corridor of college buildings. Smoking is prohibited in most areas of the college, including anywhere near or within B-Block. It is only permitted in designated smoking areas. These are located under the awnings between A-Block and the student car park on the lower level (near the lawn). The use of mobile phones and personal music devices (MP3 players, I-pods etc.) is strictly prohibited in classrooms. They must be switched off before entering classrooms. Mobile phones may not be used as a calculator in exams and students are not allowed to send or receive text messages in class.
Assessment For each unit on your timetable, you will be provided with a document called a Student Assessment Guide (S.A.G.). This contains all relevant assessment details for that unit including the dates of the assessments. You will be required to sign a form to state that you received this document and have understood this information. It is your responsibility to read the information thoroughly and clarify any concerns that you have regarding these requirements with your teacher. You must submit assessments on or before the due date and you must attended assessments such as exams and presentations on the required dates. It is your responsibility to hand in assessments on time and to remember when you must attend assessment events. Teachers will not remind you; therefore you will need to be very organised.
Written assessment items (other than exams) will not be accepted unless they have a fully completed and signed Assignment Cover Sheet stapled to the front. (See page 11)
4 Health & Rec Student Handbook Semester 2 2012
Late Assignments or Absence from Assessment Events
If you are aware that you are going to be absent from an assessment event or are unable to submit an assignment on time, you are required to discuss the situation with your class teacher before the due date. Note that simply sending an email or leaving a voicemail message is not adequate unless the teacher has responded and confirmed that they have received your message. If you are unexpectedly unable to attend an assessment or unable to hand in an assignment on time, due to reasons beyond your control and it is not possible to make prior arrangements with your teacher then you must fill out a Special Consideration Form (see page 11) and provide supporting evidence for your claim. You must contact your class teacher and submit the Special Consideration Form within seven days, or at your first class attendance after the assessment, whichever comes first.
If the above procedure is followed, you may not be penalised and may be able to have an alternative assessment event offered to you. This depends on your circumstances and whether your reasons for special consideration have been accepted. Penalties If you are late handing in an assessment or if you miss an assessment such as an exam or presentation and you do not follow the above procedure, the following penalties may apply:
Penalty A – If the assessment event is up to seven days late, your total mark will be reduced by 15%; or your grade will be reduced by one level (for example, a Distinction will be reduced to a Credit). Penalty A will not apply to Pass/Fail or Competent/Not Competent Units.
Penalty B – If the assessment event is more than 7 days late, your mark will be reduced to a zero. If it is a Pass/Fail or Competent/Not Competent Unit, a Fail or Not Competent will be recorded.
NB: If you do not attend a class test or a class presentation on the due date, Penalty B will apply.
Extensions: These may be granted if satisfactory evidence is provided to support the request. You may be asked to submit work in progress. The negotiated or revised date will become the due date and Penalty A or B will then apply to the new due date.
Assignment Resubmissions, Extensions, Resits & Post Exams An assignment resubmission or extension or an exam resit is not an automatic right. These are only offered in exceptional circumstances. Students who believe that they failed to achieve competency in an assessment event or that they were unable to submit an assignment on time because of factors beyond their control should submit a Special Consideration Form to their class teacher. If their reasons are deemed to be valid, the teacher may offer the student an opportunity undertake the assessment event again or to have an extension on the assignment. In some circumstances, when a student undertakes an assessment event for a second time, a higher pass mark will be set. If the unit concerned is a graded one, the student will not be eligible for a grade higher than a Pass.
5 Health & Rec Student Handbook Semester 2 2012
Failure and Repetition of Units
If you fail a unit you will be required to repeat it. This may delay your progress either to the next stage of the course or to gaining access to further courses. If your course duration is only one semester, you will be required to re-enrol in the course in the following semester to be able to repeat any units that you failed. In this case, the normal course enrolment fee applies. If you wish to re-enrol in a unit after receiving two fail results in that unit within a three year period, you are required to submit a request in writing to the College Director showing cause as to why you should be permitted to re-enrol.
Unit Grading
If a unit within a course is graded, the following applies:
CLASS MARK % GRADE
88 and above Competent with Distinction 75 and above Competent with Credit 61 and above Achieved Competency Below 61 Not Competent Most units require you to pass each assessment event to gain an overall pass in that unit. We try to return marked assignments to you within 4 weeks of their due date
Class Attendance
You are required to attend a minimum of 80% of the total hours for each unit in your course (excluding units that are delivered entirely by flexible delivery). If you arrive late or leave early, you will be marked accordingly in the roll book and the actual hours attended will be recorded. The 80% attendance requirement is calculated by the number of hours attended, not the number of sessions attended. Poor attendance will jeopardise your opportunity to pass the course. Try to make all appointments outside class hours and to provide appropriate evidence if you are ill or suffer misadventure.
Assignment Presentation and Submission
All assignments must be completed on a word processor or typed where appropriate. If you do not own a computer then you can access one in the library or the Flexible Learning Centre. Both are located on the ground floor of A Block
Use only one side of the paper and provide a margin of at least 3 cm for the marker’s comments.
Attach an Assignment Cover Sheet (copy these from page 11). Staple all pages including the cover sheet together. Do not put your assignment in a plastic
sleeve or folder of any type unless requested by the teacher. Pay attention to spelling, grammar and punctuation – you may be marked down if these are
poor. Ensure the work is entirely your own and that you have not plagiarised it in any way. Make sure the teacher who you hand the assignment to signs and dates the assignment
receipt. Keep this somewhere safe until your transcript is received Always keep a copy of any assignment or other assessments that you hand in (either an
electronic copy or a photocopy).
6 Health & Rec Student Handbook Semester 2 2012
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) RPL is a process by which students can apply to be exempted from certain units in their course based on previous study, work and/or life experiences. RPL should be discussed with your class teacher or your course co-ordinator. For RPL to be granted, you will need to provide evidence of being competent in all the elements that comprise the unit for which you are applying for the exemption. The elements for each unit are listed on the SAG (Student Assessment Guide) provided by your class teacher or course co-ordinator. You must specifically relate your evidence to each element of the unit. Typical forms of evidence include: references from previous employers (on letterheads), portfolios, logbooks, examination result notices and course outlines. In most cases, at least two pieces of evidence will be necessary. It is not sufficient, to simply supply a letter from an employer stating that he/she believes you have covered the units in question in the workplace. If you can’t supply adequate evidence but feel you have the skills and knowledge to carry out the tasks, then a formal assessment (e.g. a practical or theory exam) may be arranged where practicable.
If prior arrangements for RPL have not been made, you must attend the first lesson of the unit in question to receive your SAG from the teacher. You must continue to attend the classes for that unit until you have been granted recognition. If your application for RPL is rejected, you must continue to attend the unit and undergo all assessment events unless otherwise indicated by the teacher. Once RPL has been processed, this will be noted on your academic transcript which can be checked online using Student E-Services (see page 11). RPL should be applied for on or before the starting date for each unit. Do NOT delay your RPL application until the end of the semester or after the unit has finished for the semester.
Please note that recognition for computing units can only be granted by the Information Technology (I.T.) section (located on the first floor of B Block). Please contact your computing teacher or Peter Ford, Head Teacher of IT on 9469 8700.
Withdrawing from a Unit Students studying a full semester subject/unit may withdraw from that subject/unit up to the end of the fifth week without a failure being recorded. If you apply for a withdrawal after the five week deadline or simply stop coming to a subject/ unit without notification or do not participate in its assessment events, you will have a Fail/Not Competent result entered on your record. To avoid this, please inform your teacher, course co-ordinator or the head teacher if you cannot complete a subject/unit to see what arrangements can be made. To apply for a withdrawal from the whole course, contact the customer service section and fill out a course withdrawal form. To apply for a withdrawal from individual units, contact your class teacher or course coordinator.
7 Health & Rec Student Handbook Semester 2 2012
Health & Recreation Examination Policy
This policy will be applied to all exams (tests, mid semester and final examinations)
Your bag must be placed away from your desk as indicated by the teacher. You may only take to your desk the materials necessary for the exam e.g. pens, pencils etc. Mobile phones and portable music devices must be switched off throughout the duration of
the exam and left in your bag or away from your desk Mobile phones are not to be used as calculators. Calculators cannot be passed from one student to another. If you need a calculator please
speak to the exam supervisor. Programmable calculators may not be used. There must be no talking once the exam papers are given out or they will be confiscated. Any student who engages in malpractice such as copying, collusion with another person,
using unauthorized notes, or exposing work papers (in such a manner that another student may copy them) will be liable to disciplinary action. Penalties include failure in that unit being examined to a period of exclusion from the college.
An appropriate time period will be set (depending on the length of the exam) where you cannot leave the room e.g. for a 2 hour exam you cannot leave during the first hour or during the last 15 minutes. This is necessary to minimise disruption to other students’ concentration.
In certain circumstances dictionaries can be used to translate to or from another language. These must be paper dictionaries – not electronic ones.
Practical Fitness Activities
All students who will be participating in practical fitness activities will be required to complete a pre-exercise screening questionnaire. All information will remain confidential.
Most activities will be conducted in the Randwick College Fitness Centre which is located on the ground floor of B Block next to Auditorium 3. When participating in practical activities you will need:
Exercise clothes Enclosed exercise shoes A towel Pens, paper, etc Fresh change of clothes A water bottle A padlock for your locker Fee – some practical activities will be conducted at a commercial facility and may therefore
require payment of a small fee.
Note that there are Specific Requirements for the Randwick College Fitness Centre
Please be familiar with the Gym Rules and Requirements towards the end of this book
8 Health & Rec Student Handbook Semester 2 2012
Health & Recreation Notice Boards
Information relating to Health & Recreation students will be placed on the notice boards outside Room B1.26 and B1.39. Information on noticeboards may pertain to:
Changes to the timetable or rooms Work placement information Massage Clinic rosters Exam results Job opportunities Excursion details Timetables
Please check the notice board regularly (at least once a week).
Telephones
Public phones are located on the lower ground floor of Building A, the entrance to Building B and the canteen. We will not take private phone calls for students except in cases of emergency.
Contacting a Teacher
The teachers’ staffroom is B1.56. All teachers are contactable using their TAFE e-mail address and this is the preferred method of contact. Full time teachers are also able to be contacted by phone. Teachers’ email addresses and phone numbers are listed at the front of this handbook. Teachers have many classes to teach and are not always available when you wish to see them. For lengthy or personal discussions, it is advisable to make an appointment to see the teacher.
Please note that most of the H&R teachers are part time and are usually only here when they are timetabled to teach. You can work out when a teacher is at the college and what classroom they will be in by looking at the course timetables located on the noticeboards. Timetables for full time teachers are posted near the door of the staffroom.
Classroom Expectations
Making voice or video recordings of classes or taking photographs in class is not permitted without first seeking the approval of the classroom teacher and, in some instances, the other class members. This is to protect the privacy of students.
Photocopying and Printing
Students who wish to make photocopies or to print material can do so at the library. Charges apply to these – you will need to arrange credit on your TAFE card. Staff photocopiers are not available for photocopying materials necessary for class presentations and assignments.

GYM ETIQUETTE
Please be considerate of others when using the Health and Recreation Facilities. For your own and others safety the following conditions must be strictly adhered to: Wear fully enclosed appropriate FOOTWEAR when exercising in the gym.
Thongs, sandals, or work boots are not appropriate. Use a large TOWEL such as a bath towel at all times when exercising in the
gym. Use it to cover equipment and to wipe down machines, benches, bikes etc when you have finished using them.
NO TOWEL or No SHOES = NO WORKOUT - NO EXCEPTIONS Take ALL WEIGHTS off bars and machines after use. If you are the last on a
piece of equipment you are responsible for returning all plates to the stacks provided.
Do not PLACE WEIGHT PLATES against other machines, benches or
equipment. Weight stacks are provided throughout the gym for the return of plates; be sure to use them.
Do not MIX the weight plates e.g. place a 20 kg plate on a stack with 2.5 kg
plates on it. Always use COLLARS when using free weight barbell exercises. Replace all dumbbells and bars in the CORRECT ORDER in the racks
provided. Do not DROP WEIGHTS. If you are unable to control the weight to the floor,
use a lighter one. Do not ADD WEIGHT to the existing weight stacks by using dumbbells or
plates. The machines are manufactured to meet guidelines based on the existing weight stacks. It is DANGEROUS to EXCEED this. As a suggested alternative, use one leg or arm at a time, or change exercises.
Aggressive behaviour, inappropriate language or animosity toward others in the
gym is unnecessary and unacceptable. Please refrain from groaning, grunting or hissing whilst training with resistance equipment.

Dress Code for Fitness Students Participating in
Practical Activities and Work Placement
Participation in all practical activities is a requirement for students studying fitness. Many of these activities may involve bending, lifting, lying on the floor or on a bench, running, jumping, stretching etc. It is important that students wear appropriate clothing and footwear for these activities. In some cases you may need to bring a towel, a change of clothes and water. You should choose clothing that allows you to perform the above activities properly and safely. (E.g. jeans are too tight to perform a deadlift in, baggy pants may get caught in the chain of the bike or cause you to trip when running.) We also require students to look professional and to be mindful that revealing clothing may cause offence or embarrassment to you or to those around you. Students must adhere to the following Dress Code when participating in Practical Activities: Fully enclosed appropriate FOOTWEAR must be worn at all times in the gym,
whether participating or not. No person in bare feet or wearing thongs, sandals, slip-on shoes or work boots is allowed in the gym. This rule also applies to students participating in outdoor training sessions or off-site work experience programs. Students using the equipment in the gym must wear gym shoes (i.e. cross-trainer shoes or running shoes).
Appropriate shorts or track pants must be worn. The following are not
permitted: o Skirts or dresses.
o Long pants, other than track pants, such as jeans, suit pants, slacks or long cargo pants.
o Shorts that are tight and made out of non-stretch material (e.g. board shorts, cargo shorts, denim shorts).
o Tights and bike shorts without other shorts over the top.
o Extremely brief shorts which may be revealing. (Running shorts/footy shorts are permitted as long as underwear cannot be seen – we suggest you wear bike shorts/tights underneath.)
o Extremely baggy or low cut “hipster” style shorts which tend to fall down or to reveal the top of your buttocks or underwear when sitting or bending.
18 Health & Rec Student Handbook Semester 2 2012
For Prac Exams and Work Experience, students must wear their Health and Recreation T-Shirt and dark professional looking sports shorts or track pants along with cross-trainer or running shoes).
Please keep jewellery to a minimum. You may be asked to remove any
jewellery that your supervisor believes could be dangerous or that could hinder you when performing certain exercises. This may include earrings, bangles, rings etc.
A large TOWEL such as a bath towel or beach towel must be used at all times
when exercising in the gym. It should be used to cover equipment to prevent your perspiration from getting onto equipment. Wipe down machines, benches, bikes etc with your towel when you have finished using them.

19 Health & Rec Student Handbook Semester 2 2012
First Aid Courses
Students enrolled in some Health & Rec courses including Massage and Fitness, are required to complete a First Aid unit called “Apply First Aid” (HLTFA301C): This will be delivered off-campus by Re:VIVA First Aid. Students should contact Re:VIVA on 9553 6446 and choose a date and location that suits them. Once the course is done, and your certificate is received, you should bring the certificate to Christopher Bernard and complete an orange “Enrolment Adjustment – Recognition – Previous Studies” form to have this unit added to your transcript. This must be done prior to week 16 of the semester in which you are enrolled. Students who hold a current First Aid certificate will possibly be entitled to an exemption (RPL – Recognition of Prior Learning). To organise the exemption you must also bring your First Aid certificate to Christopher Bernard and complete an orange “Enrolment Adjustment – Recognition – Previous Studies” form. Further Instructions are on the WIKI.

WIKIs for Course Notes & Messages A WIKI is a website that can be accessed via the internet from anywhere. Each course has its own WIKI which all students must join. The Student Handbook, Special Consideration Forms, and Assignment Cover Sheets are on the Health & Rec home WIKI and course notes, assignments etc will be on the WIKI for your particular course (e.g. CIII FT). Teachers will sometimes the WIKI to send messages to their class so it is important that each student checks the WIKI regularly. Students will be directed to download their class notes etc. from their course WIKI and to print the notes and bring them to class. In some situations, students will find it beneficial to download their class notes to a laptop computer and bring their laptop computer to class rather than printing the notes. For documents on the WIKI that are more than 20 pages in length, we recommend you download the files in PDF format to a USB Flashdrive and then take this to a commercial print facility where you can request the notes to be printed as a booklet.
To access the WIKI: Go to the Health & Rec WIKI and follow the links to the WIKI for your course. The Web Address for the Health & Rec WIKI is: http://health10.sydneyinstitute.wikispaces.net/
Student E-Services
Student E-Services is an online facility that can be used to check your enrolment, your results from your current course (at the end of each semester) and to access results from previous courses studied at TAFE NSW.
