Random Acts of Kindness - Story #19:

TThhee SSaannddwwiicchh tthhaatt cchhaannggeedd mmyy lliiffee

It was the Greek shopkeeper in a small corner shop in London. She taught me about the disarming power of an act of kindness,

which has motivated me to give.

I was a student, single and very poor. I would work early mornings and late nights to pay for my studies, and I was tired– really

tired– all the time. On the day I went to that shop for the first time, I was sick with a virus and a very high fever. I had been off

work for a few days, and I had run out of food. Because I had been working so hard since I had moved to town, I also had no

friends nearby who could help.

So I ventured out to get some food. Normally, I would have gone to the supermarket, but on this occasion, I went into the Greek

shop because it was closer. I picked up a few items, from the looks of which revealed the fact that I lived alone. Then I handed

them to the shopkeeper, who told me, "You are unwell."

I nodded rather timidly. She pointed at the salami and bread I was buying and offered, "I can make you a sandwich, so you don't

have to do it yourself". I nodded, rather timidly, again. So, she made the sandwich and asked me to wait a moment. She went in

the back room and reappeared with a container of hot soup. "It will warm you up," she said with a broad, genuine smile.

What really warmed me up, though, was not the soup. It was her smile that told me she cared. Her kindness made me feel cared

for at a point in life when I was particularly lonely. And it inspired me. It made me want to be as kind as the shopkeeper

Early-onset Alzheimer’s disease has recently been attributed to genetics, but certain lifestyle changes can protect

against its development:

• EXERCISE REGULARLY. Depending on the amount of physical activity, risk can be reduced by up to 50%.

Mental activity strengthens brain cells, the connections between the cells and may even create new nerve

cells.

• FOLLOW A HEALTHY DIET. Research conducted by Columbia University Medical Centre found that a high

consumption of fruit, vegetables, legumes, cereals and fish, a lower consumption of meat and dairy products,

more monosaturated fats than saturated fats and mild alcohol consumption led to a 32-40% reduced risk.

• STAY SOCIALLY CONNECTED – for stimulus it provides and the beneficial effect on your stress levels.

• CONTROL SUGAR – it increases inflammation.

• LOWER BLOOD CHOLESTEROL LEVELS – high cholesterol can contribute to stroke and brain cell damage.

• MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT. A BMI greater than 30 translates into 8% less brain tissue than that of a

person with normal BMI. Being overweight (BMI 25-30) results in 4% less brain tissue. ‘That’s a big loss of

tissue,’ says Paul Thompson, UCLA professor of neurology and a leading figure in research published in the

journal Human Brain Mapping. ‘It depletes your cognitive reserves, putting you at a much greater risk of

Alzheimer’s and other diseases that attack the brain.’

• DON’T SMOKE. It starves your body of oxygen, destroys vital antioxidants and creates a free-radical heaven

which leads to inflammation.

All you have to do is remove the excess stone.

YOGA – Breathing Exercise for Good Health, Energy and Tranquillity

Today, we learn another breathing exercise, the Ujjayi breath - also known as the Victory breath.

Ujjayi is a Sanskrit word made up of two parts: ‘Ud’ meaning expanding; and ‘Jaya’ meaning victory or restraint.

Victory over what, you may ask? The list is endless, really. Victory over negativity; victory over ill-health; the

victory of maintaining wellness; victory over anxiety, fear, worry – all of which changes the breath.

(Please refer to issue no. 53 for guidelines and general benefits of breathing exercises).

A reminder, that pranayama is done with exhalation and inhalation through the nose, unless of course, otherwise

stated. If you have a blocked nose and thus unable to breathe effectively through the nose, breathe through an

open mouth. Nothing is ever forced in yoga practice, as this tantamount to violence towards oneself. Greater

emphasis is placed on doing the activity with self-observation and awareness, and working within the boundaries

of what your body is able to offer you at the present time.

Ujjayi Breath

Yay!!! I’m alive,

I’m healthy,

I’m happy,

I’m strong!

Benefits

• Lungs are fully expanded and used correctly

• Skilful use of lungs, intercostal muscles, diaphragm and abdominal muscles

• Strengthens the immune system

• It is a kind of purification

• Its calming, yet revitalizing to the body and mind

Preparation

As with all other breathing exercises mentioned in previous issues, it is recommended to first warm up with a few

body stretches.

How to do Ujjayi breathing

Sitting in your most comfortable sitting posture (on a mat or on a chair) with your hands folded in your lap; Do

not sway the back, hold the spine upright, but not stiff and rigid; The whole front of the body feels open for the

free flow of prana; The skin of the abdomen must feel stretched.

Take a moment to settle in and feel your breathing settling down. Notice the flow of air as it enters and leaves the

nose, as well as the gentle contraction and expansion of the rib cage.

Take your awareness to your body, drop your shoulders and keep the face soft and relaxed during the entire

duration of the practice. Also, do not strain the body by trying to empty too much air out of the lungs.

Try not to manipulate the in- and out-breath. Let it flow naturally.

Keeping the mouth closed, start with an exhalation, followed by nostril inhalation. Now tighten the epiglottis at

the back of the throat, ever so slightly so that the out-breath automatically becomes lengthened and produces a

slow, soft sighing sound at the back of the throat (sounding almost like the rolling waves of the ocean).

Beginners should do this practice for a few rounds only. Later you may want to do it for longer periods, and also,

engage the Ujjayi breath not only with the out-breath, but also with the in-breath.

To victory!

Rashidah

Next issue: Simhasana (Lion)

Note: If you are new at this, do it only a few times as you body may not yet be

used to the increased oxygen flooding into your body, and you may feel a bit

dizzy. Slowly increase the rounds of breathing as you practice more and more.

Beware of StandBeware of StandBeware of StandBeware of Stand----by Mode with Electronic Equipmentby Mode with Electronic Equipmentby Mode with Electronic Equipmentby Mode with Electronic Equipment

Shut down! Did you know that when your appliances are in stand-by mode, they are using up to 70% the amount of electricity

that they use when they are on? We mistakenly believe that stand-by mode is saving us money and cutting electricity costs,

compared to leaving our appliances on. It is also one of those habitual things that people pay no attention to.

But listen up! The truth is that we could save so much more money by switching off or unplugging our appliances (and

cellphone chargers) when not in use.

So, in future, try to switch off TVs, computers, the microwave etc. when you are at work or overnight. This will also assist in our

country's bid to save power wherever possible. And, you will be happier knowing that your appliances aren't creating a constant

electricity drain.

Home Remedies for Fever Blisters

By Kevin Pederson

Fever blisters or cold sores are small red blisters that usually appear on the lips and outer edges of the mouth. They often display a

clear liquid and form scabs after a few days. They are caused by herpes virus that becomes active when something triggers them.

There is no cure for cold sores, but there are remedies that will reduce the severity and frequency. They appear after colds, fever,

exposure to sun, and stress during menstruation.

Foods that contain chocolate, peanuts and other nuts, grains, peas, seeds, oatmeal and whole-wheat products should be cut out or

reduced from the diet. Cold sore is preceded by tingling, burning or itching sensation, fever, and enlargement of lymph nodes close

to the sores and a general feeling of malaise.

- When you feel the tingling, burning or itching sensation, rub juice from aloe plant on the affected area. Dab of aloe gel is effective

too. Aloe will begin the healing process immediately and not allow the sore to grow.

- Apply cornstarch paste to the affected area.

- Mix a drop or two of grapefruit seed extract either with aloe or olive oil and dab it on the sore.

- Rub ice cube on the sore for 10 minutes every hour at the onset of fever blisters. It will prevent the movement of the virus to the

skin.

- Extract of lemon balm reduces the symptoms and speeds up the healing process.

- Combine equal parts of tinctures of echinacea, calendula, oats, burdock, and lomatium. Take ½ tsp four to five times a day to

soothe the inflamed tissue, remove the toxins from the body and kill the viruses and bacteria.

- Topical application of extract of mint will speed the healing of the blister.

- Drink several cups of sage tea with a dash of powdered ginger till the blisters are cleared up.

- Steep an ordinary tea bag in boiling water, cool it and then apply to the blister. The blister should disappear within few days.

- Vaseline will help to moisturize and soften blisters to prevent them from cracking and bleeding.

- Dab a drop or two of St. John's Wort essential oil. It not only soothes, but reduces the pain and speeds up the healing process.

- Apply Witch Hazel on sores.

- Put some common salt on your moistened index finger and press it on to the sore for a minute twice a day for 2-3 days.

- Apply spirit of camphor on the sore.

AAAAAAAAmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaazzzzzzzziiiiiiiinnnnnnnngggggggg AAAAAAAAssssssssttttttttrrrrrrrroooooooonnnnnnnnoooooooommmmmmmmyyyyyyyy FFFFFFFFaaaaaaaaccccccccttttttttssssssss

“Surely your God is One, Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them and

the Lord of the sun’s risings. We have adorned the lowest heaven with an adornment – the

planets; ...” (Qur’an, 37:5-7)

In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of the night and the day,

there are indeed Signs for men of understanding; Those who remember God standing, sitting,

and lying on their sides, and ponder over the creation of the heavens and the earth; and say,

‘Our Lord, Thou hast not created this universe in vain...” (Qur’an 3:191-192)

Upon reflection and study, we find ourselves marvellously drawn to this amazing and astonishing creation of the ever-expanding

universe, harbouring secrets that are known only to her Creator, an excellent Organizer. Time and again, man is allowed some

fascinating glimpses into her marvellous nature and workings – and we realise that religion and science need not be two separate

ideologies. They co-exist perfectly side by side; each one prompting us to reflect and stand in awe of the greatness of the Creator.

SOME AMAZING FACTS:

When you look at the Andromeda galaxy (which is 2.3 million light years away), the light you are seeing took 2.3 million years

to reach you. Thus you are seeing the galaxy as it was 2.3 million years ago.

Light from the sun takes 8 minutes to reach you, thus you see the sun as it was 8 minutes ago. It might have blown up 4

minutes ago and you wouldn't know about it!

The Earth is not a sphere! It actually is an oblate spheroid, it is squashed slightly at the poles and bulges out at the equator due

to its rotation.

When Galileo viewed Saturn for the first time through a telescope, he described the planet as having "ears". It was not until

1655 that Christian Huygens suggested the crazy theory that they might be an enormous set of rings around the planet.

Jupiter is heavier than all the other planets put together.

Even on the clearest night, the human eye can only see about 3,000 stars. There are an estimated 100,000,000,000 in our

galaxy alone!

The tallest mountain in the solar system is Olympus Mons, on Mars at a height of about 15 miles, three times the height of

Mount Everest. It covers an area about half the size of Spain.

Temperatures on Venus are hot enough to melt lead.

Only one side of the moon ever faces Earth. The moons period of rotation is exactly the same as it's period of orbit.

Half-a-billionth of the energy released by the sun reaches the Earth.

Saturn is not the only planet with rings- Neptune has it's own ring system.

Jupiter acts as a huge vacuum cleaner, attracting and absorbing comets and meteors. Some estimates say that without Jupiter’s

gravitational influence the number of massive projectiles hitting Earth would be 10,000 times greater.

If a piece of the sun the size of a pinhead were to be placed on Earth, you could not safely stand within 90 miles of it!

On the equator you are about 3% lighter than at the poles, due to the centrifugal force of the Earth spinning.

If you stand on the equator, you are spinning at about 1,000 mph in as the Earth turns, as well as charging along at 67,000 mph

round the sun.

Betelgeuse, the bright star on Orion's top-left shoulder, is so big that if it was placed where the sun is, it would swallow up

Earth, Mars and Jupiter!

If you could travel at the speed of light (186,000 miles per second) it would take 100,000 years to cross our galaxy!

Every year the sun evaporates 100,000 cubic miles of water from Earth (that weighs 400 trillion tonnes!)

If the sun were the size of a dot on an ordinary-sized letter 'i', then the nearest star would be 10 miles away.

55 TTiippss tthhaatt ccaann LLoowweerr YYoouurr RRiisskk ooff HHyyppeerrtteennssiioonn According to the data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one in every three adult Americans

has hypertension or high blood pressure. Unfortunately, about 20% of these people don’t even know they have it and thus, are not

doing anything to keep the condition under control. Needless to say, this can be very alarming since hypertension is known to cause

vision loss, dementia, aneurysms, kidney failure, heart attacks and strokes.

Hypertension can affect anyone regardless of age and background. However, it is notably more common among older people and

those who are considerably overweight or obese. Interestingly enough, hypertension affects Blacks more seriously and is more

common among African Americans as compared to other races.

Lowering Your Risk of Hypertension – How Can You Do It?

Hypertension is highly preventable. You can significantly reduce your risk by following the parameters for a healthy lifestyle.

Specifically, you need to:

Eat large amounts of vegetables on a daily basis. Following the guidelines set by the Dietary Approaches to Stop

Hypertension, otherwise known as the DASH diet, can help lower your blood pressure in just about 14 days. In addition, lowering

your sodium intake to about 1,500 mg per day can also help reverse the condition.

Be physically active. Engage in leisurely physical activities at least three times per week. This can help keep your blood pressure

under control and help you maintain a healthier weight.

Avoid smoking. Studies reveal that about 30% of all deaths resulting from heart disease can be traced back to smoking since the

toxic chemicals found in tobacco are considered to be one of the major causes of coronary artery disease. In addition, its nicotine

content reduces the oxygen supply to the heart which, in turn, increases blood pressure, heart rate and the risk of blood clotting.

Reduce your alcohol intake. Drinking too much alcohol can raise your blood pressure levels so if you’re going to drink, please

do so in moderation. To be on the safe side, women should limit their alcohol consumption to one drink per day while men below 65

should not have more than two drinks per day. Men over the age of 65 should likewise stick to one drink per day.

Maintain a normal body weight. For best results, aim for a body mass index (BMI) lower than 25.

Keeping your blood pressure under control can help you live a healthier and fuller life so start eating a healthier diet, be more

physically active, avoid smoking, reduce your alcohol intake and try to maintain a healthy body weight. The rewards will definitely

prove worth your while! http://www.inlandvalleynews.com

The Creation of Adam (1508-1512) on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel has long been recognized as one of the world’s great art

treasures. In 1990 Frank Lynn Meshberger, M.D. described what millions had overlooked for centuries — an anatomically accurate

image of the human brain was portrayed behind God. On close examination, borders in the painting correlate with sulci in the inner

and outer surface of the brain, the brain stem, the basilar artery, the pituitary gland and the optic chiasm. God’s hand does not touch

Adam, yet Adam is already alive as if the spark of life is being transmitted across a synaptic cleft. Below the right arm of God is a sad

angel in an area of the brain that is sometimes activated on PET scans when someone experiences a sad thought. God is superimposed

over the limbic system, the emotional center of the brain and possibly the anatomical counterpart of the human soul. God’s right arm

extends to the prefrontal cortex, the most creative and most uniquely human region of the brain.

The brilliant Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo Buonarroti

painted magnificent frescoes on the ceiling of the Vatican’s Sistine

Chapel, laboring from 1508 to 1512. Commissioned by Pope Julius

II, Michelangelo performed this work himself without assistance.

Scholars debate whether he had any guidance from the Church in the

selection of the scenes, and what meaning the scenes were to convey.

In the fresco traditionally called the Creation of Adam, but which

might be more aptly titled the Endowment of Adam, I believe that

Michelangelo encoded a special message. It is a message consistent

with thoughts he expressed in his sonnets. Supreme in sculpture and

painting, he understood that his skill was in his brain and not in his

hands. He believed that the “divine part” we “receive” from God is

the “intellect”. In the following sonnet, Michelangelo explains how

he creates sculpture and painting and how, I believe, God himself

gave man the gift of intellect:

After the divine part has well

conceived Man’s face and gesture, soon both

mind and hand, With a cheap model, first, at their

command, Give life to stone, but this is not

achieved By skill. In painting, too, this is

perceived: Only after the intellect has planned The best and highest, can the ready

hand Take up the brush and try all things

received.

The sculpture and painting of Michelangelo reflect

the great knowledge of anatomy that he acquired

by performing dissections of the human body. His

experience in dissection is documented in Lives of

the Artists, written by his contemporary, Georgio

Vasari2. Vasari says, “For the church of Santo

Spirito in Florence Michelangelo made a crucifix

of wood which was placed above the lunette of the

high altar, where it still is. He made this to please

the prior, who placed rooms at his disposal where

Michelangelo very often used to flay dead bodies

in order to discover the secrets of anatomy . . .”

The Creation of Adam fresco shows Adam and

God reaching toward one another, arms

outstretched, fingers almost touching. One can

imagine the spark of life jumping from God to

Adam across that synapse between their fingertips.

However, Adam is already alive, his eyes are open,

and he is completely formed; but it is the intent of

the picture that Adam is to “receive” something

from God. I believe there is a third “main

character” in the fresco that has not previously

been recognized. I would like to show this by

looking at four tracings, Figures 1 through 4, and

by reviewing gross neuroanatomy, using works by

Frank Netter, MD, illustrator of The CIBA

Collection of Medical Illustrations, Volume I —

The Nervous System.

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY -Wikipedia

Occupational therapy (also abbreviated as OT) is the use of treatments to develop, recover, or maintain the daily living and work

skills of patients with a physical, mental or developmental condition. Occupational therapy interventions focus on adapting the

environment, modifying the task, teaching the skill, and educating the client/family in order to increase participation in and

performance of daily activities. An OT can work with different populations, diagnosis, specialities, and in different settings.

Occupational therapy approaches typically include:

Teaching new ways of approaching tasks

How to break down activities into achievable components e.g. sequencing a complex task like cooking a complex meal

Comprehensive home and job site evaluations with adaptation recommendations.

 Performance skills assessments and treatment.

Adaptive equipment recommendations and usage training.

Environmental adaptation including provision of equipment or designing adaptations to remove obstacles or make them

manageable

Guidance to family members and caregivers.

The use of creative media as therapeutic activity

Children and youth Occupational therapists work with infants, toddlers, children, and youth and their families in a variety of settings including

schools, clinics, and homes. They assist children and their caregivers to build skills that enable them to participate in meaningful

occupations. Occupational therapists also address the psychosocial needs of children and youth to enable them to participate in

meaningful life events. These occupations may include: normal growth and development, feeding, play, social skills, and

education. Occupational therapy with Children and Youth may take a variety of forms:

• Promoting a wellness program in schools to prevent childhood obesity

• Facilitating hand writing development in school-aged children

• Promoting functional skills for living in children with developmental disabilities

• Providing individualized treatment for sensory processing difficulties

• Addressing psychosocial needs of a child and teaching effective coping strategies

Warrior of Light

A warrior knows when a battle is worth fighting. He bases his

decisions in inspiration and faith. He nevertheless meets people

who ask him to fight battles that are not his own, on battlefields

that he does not know or which do not interest him. They want

to involve the warrior of light in contests that are important to

them, but not to him.

Often these are people close to the warrior of light, people who

love him and trust in his strength and who want him to ease their

anxieties in some way.

At such moments, he smiles and makes it clear to them that he

loves them, but he does not take up the challenge.

A true warrior of light always chooses his own battlefield.

Kabir’s Poems

(Songs of Kabir – as translated by Rabindranath Tagore)

O SERVANT, where dost thou seek Me?

Lo! I am beside thee.

I am neither in temple nor in mosque: I am neither in Kaaba nor in

Kailash:

Neither am I in rites and ceremonies, nor in Yoga and renunciation.

If thou art a true seeker, thou shalt at once see Me: thou shalt

meet Me in a moment of time.

Kabîr says, "O Sadhu! God is the breath of all breath."

O FRIEND! Hope for Him whilst you live, know whilst you live,

understand whilst you live: for in life deliverance abides.

If your bonds be not broken whilst living, what hope of deliverance

in death?

It is but an empty dream, that the soul shall have union with Him

because it has passed from the body:

If He is found now, He is found then,

If not, we do but go to dwell in the City of Death.

If you have union now, you shall have it hereafter.
