HEADTEACHER

Dear Parent/Carer,

I would like to start by saying what a credit to you and the school our pupils were yesterday during the snowy conditions. Pupils arrived at school ready to learn and they were then sensible at both break and lunchtime when they were allowed outside for some snowballing fun.

It has been an excellent week at school. Our Deputy Headteacher Mrs Arnold has led assemblies for pupils on the aspirational principles of educationalist Doug Lemov, Mrs Fletcher organised for Year 10 and Year 11 pupils to enjoy an after school performance of An Inspector Calls and Mrs Speer delivered to a range of Headteachers from across the country at a conference in London.

The Science area’s remodelling works are continuing, the new ICT equipment we had installed over the half term break is further enhancing Teaching and Learning.

Next week we are looking forward to Year 7 Parents Evening when parents will get the opportunity to meet with subject staff to discuss their child’s progress.

Best wishes for the weekend.

Yours sincerely

V Gowan Headteacher

KEY STAGE 3 Girls and boys made good progress last half term and, as a new half term begins, our KS3 pupils are enjoying a whole host of new activities. Taking advantage of our all-weather astro-turf and the Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park, new activities include: Trampolining; Swimming; Orienteering; Table Tennis; Fitness; Football; Cheerleading; Volleyball and Badminton. Attendance at enrichment activities has been good, however, if you have not attended an enrichment activity in PE yet please ask your PE teacher about the opportunities available and join us next week.

KEY STAGE 4

Year 10 GCSE PE : Pupils have just started on their Personal Exercise Plans where they will plan, carry out and evaluate a 7 week training programme worth 10% of their overall grade. They have completed numerous fitness tests and from this have decided which components of fitness they need to improve upon to help them develop in their chosen sport. This week we have looked in detail at various methods of training and pupils have identified which methods will help them to achieve their overall PEP aim. Year 11 GCSE PE: Pupils are preparing for a very important few months. They are currently working on their Personal Exercise Programmes and completing a variety of practical exams. Thursday 29th March is the date for the practical moderation exercise and our Y11 pupils will sit their GCSE PE theory exams on the 16

th and 18

th May.

To prepare for this, all of our GCSE PE pupils should have bought a revision guide and workbook from Mr Parr.

Year 10 Sports Studies – Pupils have been studying the 'Sports Leadership' unit where they learn about different leadership styles and qualities. This class are also studying 'Contemporary issues in Sport'. In this unit the pupils will learn about the values of sport, why athletes takes Performance Enhancing Drugs and the positives and negatives of hosting a major sports event. Year 11 Sports Studies – Pupils have been working hard within a number of different areas of the course. They are refining their practical grades within their 'Developing Sports Skills' unit and pupils have been attending extra sessions to find that extra mark during lunch and after school. The Year 11s are also due to be assessed in their practical skills in two outdoor activities this term; which are canoeing and orienteering. All pupils should continue to attend all extra sessions as their deadline for the coursework and exam is rapidly approaching.

OUT OF LITTLE ACORNS…. Trampolining continues to go from strength to strength within LDA PE. Within a year, we have gone from securing a £10K grant to buy new equipment to starting a very popular extra-curricular club with a number of girls from the club getting into the Airbourne Academy. Now we are at the stage where we are teaching trampolining within KS3 lessons and some of our GCSE PE pupils are also achieving great success within this activity. Pupils interested in joining the extra-curricular club should see Mrs Molyneux.

DTAC - II We are delighted to announce the return of the Dean Trust Active Challenge. Following the success of last year’s event, DTAC II will once again be held at the Lord Derby’s Knowsley Hall Estate and will take place on June 26

th 2018.

The Dean Trust Active Challenge will consist of two different events. The Pupil 2k run will start at 4.30pm whilst the Staff run will start shortly after at 5pm. Mr Volante will deliver additional information regarding the event in the near future.

HOLLAND SPORTS TOUR 2019 - UPDATE The PE department are organising a Sports Tour to Holland during the Easter Holidays in 2019. The trip involves pupils participating in either Football, Netball or Dance and is aimed at Y7, 8 & 9 pupils. If your daughter / son is interested then please see Mr Parr for a letter.
