Proper soybean staging is an important management consideration when scouting crops and determining the best time to make Headline®

fungicide applications.

Soybean growth is broadly placed in two categories:1. Vegetative Stages – occur in the period of time when soybeans are growing vegetatively only; adding leaves and stem height. These stages are assigned the letter “V” followed by a number to indicate the proper stage.

2. Reproductive Stages – occur when plant begins to bloom. It is important to note that while indeterminate soybeans grown here in the northern U.S. still grow vegetatively throughout much of the reproductive period, when blooms appear, the plants are defined as being in reproductive stages. These stages assigned the letter “R” followed by a number to further define the stage.

Soybean reproductive growth is divided into 8 separate stages:•R1= Beginning Bloom R5 = Beginning Seed•R2 = Full Bloom R6= Full Seed•R3 = Beginning Pod R7= Beginning Maturity•R4 = Full PodR8= Full Maturity

We will focus on stages R1 – R4, the most importantstages for Headline applications.

R1 – Beginning Bloom•At least one flower open anywhere

on the plant.•For indeterminate soybeans, this

stage usually occurs around V7 to V10 but this can very widely based on planting date.

R2 – Full Bloom•One flower open at one of the top two nodes on the plant.•Indeterminate soybeans should have reached about 50% of their total height at this stage.•Plant stress at this stage will cause flower abortion.

R3 – Beginning Pod•At least one pod 3/16” long at one of the top four nodes.

R4 – Full Pod•Pods at least ¾” long at one of the top four nodes on the plant.•Most critical period for seed yield.•Maximum plant height and numbers of leaves nearly complete at this stage – this will occur at R5.
