However, the very formidable challenge ahead lies in our potential to continue this "rich vein" of form in the years ahead – thepotential is there; all that is required is hard work and commitment.

Note: We will be taking an “early mark” at the end of Term IV to mark the team’s success.

R U OK?

This week the School has supported the ‘R U OK?’ organisation to fight mental illness and youth suicide. More and more schools arejoining parents in taking the initiative in educating young people around wellbeing and good mental health because the statisticsmake for such alarming reading. 10% of 12-15 years olds have self-harmed in the last 12 months and 5% have attempted suicideaccording the Growing Up in Australia: Longitudinal Study of Australian Children (LSAC), and programmes like the Netflix series ’13Reasons’, that suggest that suicide is a legitimate aspect of mainstream youth culture, make an awareness of the issue even moreurgent. Perhaps it is the pressure of the modern world and a flat Australian economy, perhaps it is the ubiquity of social media andthe temptation to choose virtual relationships over face to face relationships, perhaps it reflects a prevalent, generalised anxiety inAustralia in 2017, and perhaps it is a melange of all of these things.

Human beings are fundamentally relational and I have a profound sense that asking the question, “Are you ok?”, and really listeningto the answer, is an important protective strategy. We must work together to care for one another so that we do all we can to fightback against the scourge of youth suicide.

The following text is taken directly from the R U OK? website ( https://www.ruok.org.au/about-us)

We know that suicide prevention is an enormously complex and sensitive challenge the world over. But we also know that some ofthe world’s smartest people have been working tirelessly to develop credible theories that suggest there’s power in that simplest ofquestions - “Are you ok?”

One of these theories is hypothesised by United States academic, Dr Thomas Joiner. Because his father took his own life, Thomas hasdedicated his research to try and answer that question “why?”

His theory tries to answer that complex question by describing three forces at play in someone at risk. The first force is the personthinks they’re a burden on others; the second is that they can withstand a high degree of pain; and the third is they don’t feelconnected to others.

It's this lack of connection (or lack of belonging) that we want to prevent. By inspiring people to take the time to ask "Are you ok?"and listen, we can try to help people struggling with life feel connected long before they even think about suicide. It comes down toregular, face-to-face, meaningful conversations about life. And asking “Are you ok?” is a great place to start.

ACADEMIC

Academic Focus | Motivation and Engagement SurveyStudents’ academic motivation and engagement is closely associated with their school achievement. During the past Monday, allYear 7 boys completed a survey about behaviours and attitudes associated with their work ethic, self-regulation, class participation, study, homework and enjoyment of school. A similar survey was completed by Year 10 students earlier in the year during theirAcademic Conference. The follow-up from this survey will take place over the coming weeks with Middle School Housemasters. Thissurvey is an important part of our focus on the Motivation and Engagement Wheel, which helps boys realise that positive motivationand engagement factors are learnable, and negative motivation and engagement factors are changeable. The Wheel also promotesfactors that are pivotal to boys’ success beyond school.

Our core business at Trinity is boys’ learning. A Trinity education seeks to engage the Mind, Body and Spiritual development of all ourboys. Whether it’s through the Motivation and Engagement Wheel, Gatehouse Survey, Allwell diagnostic testing, ELEVATE, or themany other practices and strategies used to meet the needs of our boys, we are committed to providing a holistic educationalenvironment that seeks to nurture and encourage our boys to “…grow in wisdom and stature and in favour with God and man.”

Thank you to Caterers Sodexo and all their staff. Special mention to our VIP guests Mr Bradley Barr and his mum Mrs Coral Barr and Master of the Middle School, Mr John Allen and theSenior Jazz Band who preformed for us. Without doubt the highlight of the night was the guest speaker the fabulous Mrs Cathy Clark,a dear friend who said yes before she thought too long about the request. It is not easy to speak in front of 400 young gentlemen andtheir mums, but with 22 years of being a Trinity mum Cathy was tremendous.

More About Our Guest Speaker

Richard Glover needs no introduction to Sydney audiences – he hosts the popular Drive programme on ABC Sydney, and has writtena humorous column in Saturday’s Sydney Morning Herald for over 20 years, which features his wife Jocasta, sons Batboy and theSpace Cadet, and more recently, the letters home of his new dog Clancy. He’s also the author of a number of best-selling books, including the entertaining and exhausting story of The Mud House – how four friends built a mud-brick house on weekends – no powertools involved.

His latest, Flesh Wounds, is a book for anyone who’s wondered if their family is the oddest one on the planet. And wondered at theway so many of us survive - despite families that were not what we ordered. Richard’s book describes his mother’s Tolkein-inspirednudist colony, her invented past as a British aristocrat and his father’s distance and alcoholism, to say nothing of his mastery of thelamb chop, served without fail every evening.

Richard is an engaging, funny, entertaining and warm speaker – don’t miss hearing him.

All Year 12 students will need to be aware of the following changes from University Admission Centre that will affect studentsapplying from August 2017:

The maximum number of preferences will now be five (not nine as currently). There will be an offer round after ATAR release and before Christmas. There will be an offer round in mid-January but no ‘Main Round’.Cut-offs will be published for the pre-Christmas round and the mid-January round.

KEY DATES FOR 2018 ADMISSIONS FOR HSC AND IB STUDENTS

Click here for HSC and Click here for IB

These changes simplify the admissions process and ensure that offers are made in a timely manner.

We recommend all Year 12 students apply by Friday 29 September 2017, before the processing charge starts to increase.

Processing charge for 2017 is now set as $58.00. Each student will be required to pay this charge after they apply through UAC.

After you apply, you can change your course preferences as many times as you like for no extra cost. Many students wait to receivetheir ATAR before they make their final decision.

If students are applying for scholarships, they will need a UAC number. However, this number isn't generated until you applythrough UAC.

For Year 12/HSC applicants – You will apply through UAC, using your NESA number ONLY, and UAC four-digit PIN (which you willreceive by mail to your home address in August) when first applying through the UAC site. The UAC PIN allows you to applyonline through UAC’s website. It also gives you access to your ATAR and to UAC’s Check and Change, where you can change yourcourse preferences and check for offers. Your UAC application number has nine digits and is issued when you apply.

For Year 12/IB applicants – You will need to use your Personal Code (6 alphanumeric like abc123)

For Year 12/IB applicants –Your UAC PIN is the first four digits of your date of birth. For example, if your birthday is 3 October, yourUAC PIN is 0310; if your birthday is 17 May, your UAC PIN is 1705.

Once you have started your UAC application, your UAC number is then generated and this will be used throughout theapplication period.

Lost or forgotten PIN: If you’ve already applied through UAC, you can click on the lost PIN link in Check and Change to have itemailed to you. If you haven’t applied, you can call UAC Customer Service on 1300 ASK UAC (1300 275 822), from (Monday to Friday8.30am–4.30pm). Due to privacy legislation, UAC can only release this information to you.

UAC Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS)Schools Recommendation Schemes (SRS) are one way institutions make early offers of undergraduate admission, using criteria otherthan (or in addition to) the ATAR.Participating institutions can use a range of criteria when making SRS offers, including your Year 11 studies, school's rating of yourabilities in areas of study and aptitudes, and your Educational Access Schemes (EAS) application (if applicable).SRS Applications Open Wednesday 2 August and close Friday 29 Septemberhttp://www.uac.edu.au/srs/http://www.uac.edu.au/documents/srs/SRSbooklet.pdf Educational Access Scheme Applications Educational Access Schemes (EAS) aim to help students whose education has been negatively affectedduring Year 11 and/or Year 12 receive an offer to university. Institutions use EAS to help eligibleapplicants gain admission to university if their ATAR is below a course cut-off by allocating bonus points,or places, to eligible EAS applicants.http://www.uac.edu.au/eas/ UAC Equity Scholarships Applications OpenEquity Scholarships help financially disadvantaged students with the general costs associated with tertiary study.Equity Scholarships are awarded to students from low socio-economic backgrounds, particularly those who receive Centrelink incomesupport payments.http://www.uac.edu.au/equity/
