The Aim of MECC Training Sessions

‘To increase the number of brief health advice discussions offered to individuals by front-line staff in Tameside'

Why are we doing this?

•‘strengthening self-esteem, confidence and •personal responsibility; positively promoting healthy behaviours and lifestyles…Protecting the population from health threats should be led by central government, with a strong system to the frontline.’

•Healthy Lives, Healthy People

•‘…every contact must count as an opportunity to maintain, and where possible, improve their mental and physical health and wellbeing’

Making Every Contact CountTurning ambition into action!

• There is a need for a culture change amongst organisations towards prevention, to bring the promotion of mental and physical health and wellbeing into the mainstream – doing this has become known as MECC

• Offering simple advice via a leaflet and sign posting to appropriate lifestyle services for support can really make a difference!

MECC means making the best of every appropriate opportunity to raise the issue of healthy lifestyles

•Systematically promoting the benefits of healthy living within an organisation and to local residents

•Raising the issue of lifestyle change with individuals

•Responding appropriately to the lifestyle issues that may be raised

•Taking appropriate action by either offering information or signposting to relevant services

What is MECC?

•It is not about telling people what to do and how to live their lives.

It is about frontline staff taking opportunities to raise the issue of healthy lifestyles and offering the client booklet and signposting if appropriate. Its about being the first link in the chain in helping to improve people’s health and wellbeing.

If you eat one or two portions with each meal and have the occasional fruit snack you might be surprised at how easy it is to eat five-a-day.

Supporting People to Change

How best to support people to change their lifestyles? •Be non judgemental and supportive•Remember any enquiry into a persons lifestyle can be seen as a judgement, about the choices they are making. Be sensitive but don’t miss the opportunity!

‘Has anyone already asked you about your ……….smoking, drinking, physical activity etc before?’

The MECC ApproachKeep it Short and Simple

KISS!

1. ASK -Raise the issue - take the opportunity, be brave!!

2. ADVICE - Provide the leaflet or signpost.

3. ACT -Be supportive and offer follow up.

When can you raise an issue?• During any day to day contact with a

resident • When you hear them mention a

lifestyle problem

• When you can see that support with a lifestyle issue may be of help

• As part of existing information gathering arrangements
