HD Series Electric Gun Drivers10

Part 1034727B 2004 Nordson CorporationManual 42−HD−MA−01

Overview The HD Series Electric Gun Driver (HD gun driver) represents three types ofgun drivers: HD2A, HD2B, and HD4A.

HD gun drivers enhance performance of automatic guns by producingextremely fast valve action. HD gun drivers ensure precise adhesivedeposits by delivering high voltage DC power to the electric applicator coils, providing sharper cutoff and increased pattern placement accuracy.

The information in this manual is generally common to the three HD gundrivers. Differences are noted where applicable.

Description The following information provides a system description of the three HD gundrivers.

HD2A Gun Driver The HD2A gun driver accepts two independent inputs from a patterncontroller or a 5−24 VDC input source, and provides two independentoutputs. The two inputs can be connected so that a single input drives boththe outputs. Each output can drive up to four standard E100/M100/EM100automatic modules or eight E900/EM900 automatic modules. The HD2A

gun driver has two 8-position DIP switches and one 4-position DIP switch toconfigure the performance settings.

Installation This section provides information to position and connect the HD gundrivers.

Unpacking and Positioning the HD Gun Drivers The HD gun driver kit includes all the mounting hardware, conduit holes forpower hook up, timer input signal and output wires.

1. Exercise care to prevent equipment damage during unpacking.

2. Inspect for any damage that may have occurred during shipping. Reportany damage to a Nordson representative.

3. Install the HD gun driver close to the pattern controller and melter butaway from excessive vibration or moisture.

4. Mount the HD gun driver, refer to Figures 4 and 5 in Dimensions.

Electrical Connections

WARNING: HD gun drivers are designed for use with specific automaticguns, photosensors, pattern controllers, or customer-supplied timers. Donot connect HD gun drivers to any other device. Serious injury or propertydamage may occur.

WARNING: HD gun drivers produce a high voltage DC signal that couldcause fatal injury. Disconnect power at power source and wait 3 minutes forcapacitor to discharge before performing maintenance to this or any otheradhesive system component, such as wiring, plugs or terminal connectors.

Make sure that the DC output signal wires from the HD gun drivers aresufficiently rated to withstand a voltage of 600 volts, 0.620 mm2 (20 AWG)wire or equivalent.

WARNING: Automatic guns must be completely isolated from all othercircuits. Do not attempt to connect this gun driver through test circuits(provided on systems or other equipment). Consult a Nordsonrepresentative for any questions regarding installation.

Page 23: HD Series Electric Gun Driver - EquipNet · HD Series Electric Gun Driver Customer Product Manual Part 1034727B Issued 3/04 NORDSON CORPORATION • DULUTH, GEORGIA • USA

WARNING: HD gun drivers must be properly grounded and fusedaccording to its rated current consumption. Failure to follow the safetyprocedures can result in serious injury.

CAUTION: When a recommended pattern controller is used, all signaloutputs are optically isolated. If another type of pattern controller is used, isolate the PELV (Protective Extra Low Voltage) circuits before connectingthe output signal from pattern controller/input to the HD gun drivers.

Plan the wiring route carefully as they are an integral part of a successfulinstallation. Consult a Nordson representative for recommended cables.

1. Connect the HD gun driver to a ground for safe operation. Verify that allconduit and cabling shields are properly grounded.

NOTE: If the HD gun driver ships from the factory as part of a system, itcomes grounded to the melter chassis.

2. Connect the HD gun driver to a fuse-protected switched circuit. The HD gun driver is fused with two 2.5 A slow-blow fuses, and is connectedto the melters main circuit breaker.

3. Use separate shielded cables for each signal line. Signal wiringincludes photosensors, tach generator, and communication wiring.

4. Use the twisted pair wire for HD gun driver output.

5. Connect the power cables to a grounded conduit. Run the signal wiring, power wiring and HD gun driver output separately if possible. Do notrun all three together. If the signal and the power wiring must share thesame conduit, the signal leads must be completely shielded.

NOTE: The signal and power wiring should be as short as possible.

6. Install the pattern controllers and peripherals away from electrical noisesources such as transformers, motors, high voltage lines, large powerswitches, or welders.
