We worked on library rules and rou<nes. Each week, the students will be working in library centers, checking out books they chose, and learning about book care, library organiza<on, library skills, and listening to some great stories. It has been a joy geDng to know the students and learning what types of books they want to read. We are always on the lookout for dona<ons of very popular series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Big Nate, Descendants, S<nk/Judy Moody, MinecraL, Pokemon, Goosebumps, Dork Diaries, Geronimo S<lton, and any graphic novels. We would also love games like Chess, Checkers, Connect Four, Guess Who, and card games or current trivia cards. And LEGOS! Any dona<ons can be dropped in the main office. FLU SHOT CLINIC!! A flu shot clinic for students of the Brunswick School Department will be held Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 8:00-1:00 here at Harriet Beecher Stowe.

This is also the same date as the 5th grade carwash fundraiser… two birds one stone =)

NOTE FROM THE NURSE Just hearing the words “head lice” can make your head feel itchy. There is good news though: in school transmissions are considered rare.

Head lice crawl- they do not hop or fly. The primary mode of transmission is from direct head to head contact. They do not transmit disease nor are they an indicator of hygiene.

Head lice should not cause a child to miss school. Typically, by the time it’s realized the lice have been there for a month. For this reason the student will remain at school for the rest of the day and will return to school once treatment has been initiated.

There will not be classroom wide or school wide letters being sent home to parents reporting a case of head lice. The classroom teacher will be notified in case other children are suspected of having lice as well.

Should you have questions contact, Linda Morris- school nurse, at 319-1965 or via email at [email protected].

NEWS FROM HBS PE news- We have hit the ground running since our return for the 17/18 school year. Joel Grindle, a UMO education student has joined us as a student teacher and has been co-teaching and learning to become a physical education teacher. We’ve started the year off with games that revolve around chasing, dodging, and fleeing. Grades 2 & 3 have been playing sharks and seals, traffic tag, and other fitness skills in warm up stations. Grades 4 & 5 have been working on cooperative games such as crossover tag with a soccer component, foot eye coordination skills and other team challenges.

4th grade- CREA field trips begin this month to go along with our ecology unit. Please see the schedule to know when your child’s class is going.

5th grade- Plimoth Plantation field trip planning is underway. The tentative dates are October 23 & October 25. Four classes will attend each date. You will receive more information on this from your child’s teacher.

Music news- Concerts have been scheduled for year. Dates are as follows: 3rd grade- 11/3, 2nd grade- 12/21, 4th grade- 3/23, 5th grade- 6/8, band concerts- 11/20 & 5/8 (May date is All Town Band), 3rd grade chorus- 11/30, 4th/5th chorus- 4/10, and our musical “Pirates” 12/6.

BCEF What do pizzas and pumpkins have in common? Both can be found at Brunswick’s Portland Pie in October! For a $5 donation, kids receive a pumpkin to decorate while they wait for their order. All proceeds benefit the Brunswick Community Education Foundation, which awarded over $40,000 in grants to Brunswick’s public schools for 2017 including a visit by children’s author Chris Van Dusen to every class at Coffin, STEM project supplies for 5h graders at HBS, and outdoor classroom at BJHS, robotics materials to enable the launch of a new computer coding course at BHS, and camping supplies for the REAL school. Please consider donating while you wait!
