PrefaceThis Handbook was written by the Australian Communications and Media

Authority (ACMA) in consultation with Standards Australia and itsCommunications Cabling Committee CT-001.

This Handbook forms part of a series known collectively as theCommunications Cabling Manual (CCM). The CCM is compiled byStandards Australia in consultation with an industry-based advisory panel

representing carriers, ACMA, Communications Alliance, cablemanufacturers, cablers and end-users. Standards Australia wishes toacknowledge the advisory panel’s valuable contribution.

The CCM is designed to provide essential information to thecommunications cabling industry and is available in the following modules:

Module 1: Australian regulatory arrangements (HB 243)

Module 2: Communications cabling handbook (HB 29)

Module 3: Residential communications cabling handbook (HB 252)

Module 4: Relevant standards

 –  Regulatory standards

• AS/ACIF S008:2006Requirements for customer cabling products

Installation requirements for customer cabling(Wiring Rules)

 –  Voluntary standards (AS/NZS 308X series, andAS/NZS ISO/IEC series)

This Module of the CCM provides essential regulatory information toindustry in order to assist cabling installers and others to comply with the

requirements of the Telecommunications Act 1997 (the Act). In particular, itgives advice on Cabling Provider Rules (CPRs) which came into effect on3 October 2000.

Whilst the information in this Handbook is the latest available at the time of printing, users must ensure that they consult the latest edition of any

referenced standard, amendments to the Act and its regulations and use thereferences herein as a guide only.
