Hazardous Inventory Tracking System (HITS) Tutorial
H.I.T.S = Hazardous Inventory Tracking System
Online inventory of chemicals contained within the laboratory, studio, or shop
Available for all labs, studios, & shops in the USF System
Helps PIs manage chemical inventory for their labs; a requirement within the CHP
Provides real time chemical data to emergency personnel

HITS FUNCTIONS
HITS is behind USF’s firewall so it can only be accessed on the USF Gold WiFi internet connection
EH&S Laboratory and Research Safety training is required
Complete the HITS Access Request Form with PI signature and submit to EH&S
The form is located on the EH&S website : www.usf.edu/ehs

From the EH&S website www.usf.edu/ehs : Select HITS

Select “HITS Log In”

Enter your USF NetID and password

HITS MAIN MENU
Select “SEARCH/REPORT INVENTORY”
VIEW OR SEARCH INVENTORY
• Select option from “Material” drop-down menu• Search inventory by chemical name, bottle number, CAS
number, owner, or location • Once search info is entered, click “Search”
SEARCH INVENTORY
• Results can be sorted by chemical name, bottle number, owner, or the date received
• Select the corresponding column header to sort
SEARCH INVENTORY
• Attach tag to waste container when waste is first added
• Fill out waste tag completely• Include contents &
percentages –must equal 100%
• Indicate the hazard(s), if any• No abbreviations
or formulas

From the Main Menu select “Dispose of Chemical”
DISPOSE OF CHEMICAL WASTE
There are two waste disposal options:“Item From Inventory” “Waste From Process”
DISPOSE OF CHEMICAL WASTE
• Click “Item from Inventory” if the chemical is no longer being used or the container is empty
• Search the chemical by the HITS bottle number
DISPOSE OF ITEM FROM INVENTORY
Click “Dispose” next to the chemical that you want to dispose of
DISPOSE OF ITEM FROM INVENTORY
Click to indicate whether the container is empty or not empty
DISPOSE OF ITEM FROM INVENTORY
• Confirm selection• This removes the chemical from your inventory• Remove the barcode from the empty container before discarding in the
trash
DISPOSE OF ITEM FROM INVENTORY
• If the container is not empty, complete the disposal form • Click “Submit" when form is completely filled out• The request will be sent to EH&S for pick-up
DISPOSE OF ITEM FROM INVENTORY
• For process generated waste, click “Waste from Process” from the Disposal Menu• Fill out hazardous waste disposal form completely using info from the yellow waste tag –
use whole numbers only, no decimals
Sum must equal 100%
DISPOSE OF WASTE FROM PROCESS
• Please note that EPA P-Listed wastes are acutely toxic in very small amounts• Empty containers that contained P-Listed chemicals must be disposed through
EH&S, they cannot be thrown in the trash • A waste disposal form must be filled out• If you select to remove a P-Listed item from the inventory, a warning will be
displayed & will link you to a waste disposal form
P-LISTED WASTE
• Hazardous Waste Specialists pick up waste at the designated Satellite Accumulation Area (SAA)
• Ensure that all waste is kept in this location
WASTE PICK-UP
From the Main Menu click “Request Waste Supplies”
REQUESTING SUPPLIES
Waste Supplies available:• Liquid Waste
• 10 L Carboy• 20 L Carboy
• Solid Waste• 1 gal bucket• 5 gal bucket
• Hazardous Waste Tags• Hazardous Waste Labels
REQUESTING SUPPLIES
• Specify supply type & quantity needed in space provided
• Once form is completely filled out, select “Submit”
• Supplies will be delivered to your lab within a week
REQUESTING SUPPLIES
When ordering chemicals ship to the building street addresses of USF HITS Receivers. They will enter the chemicals into HITS and then contact the lab to pick up the chemicals.
