Spring 13 IIT Natatorium Chicago, Illinois

By using the surrounding buildings of the Illinois Institute of Technology campus, this proposal creates meaningful urban gestures and an efficient natatorium program. The transit system, that runs overhead is the main contributer in determining the program of the natatorium. The center beneath the transit system becomes a public space with the gym on one side and natatorium on the other, each with different ceiling heights to denote uses and zones.

Spring 15 Linear Wall Walk Rome, Italy

This project demanded an understanding of both the city and the citizens of Rome. Romans pride themselves on their vast history, making the twelve mile wall a relic in a sense. As of now, the majority of the wall acts as a barrier and location for trash to accumulate. The proposal uses the walls most intriguing characteristic, it’s age, to revitalize the area to become a linear park. A ramp and viewing area to look down into a fallen tower as well as access into the wall and towers make the wall desirable again.

Studies along the wall were done primarily in section to address how the landscape changes from one side to the other as well as what is within it. These studies informed the design, allowing the wall can evolve into more than just a barrier.

Fall 15 Assisted Living and Market Rate Housing

Birmingham, Alabama

This proposal pulls strongly from the surrounding context to determine its layout, design, and intent. The multi-generational complex offers opportunities to interact in it’s courtyards as well as within the other amenities provided. The assisted living quarters is located next to the Historical 16th Baptist Church allowing easy access to and from. Views to Kelly Ingram Park are available from rooms and public spaces while the ground floor consist of retailers.

Real life design choices such as complying to ADA accessibility codes , life safety, egress, HVAC systems, and structural systems were implemented into the Birmingham assisted living and market rate housing project. ADA accessibility required that there be a five foot turning radius in both the bathroom and rooms of the owner, as well as clearances in doorways, hallways, and bathrooms.

Fall 12 Gazing Wall

This project began as a conceptual idea of a wall that itself is gazing or provokes that feeling. After iterations, I found that projecting geometries within a wall and making it inhabitable make the wall desirable. The two seats within the wall allow users to gaze into the sky or out onto the surrounding landscape, while seating on sides of the wall offer similar experiences.

The work I have done at GMD Design Group revolved heavily around Autocad, Photoshop and Illustrator. I constructed 2D renderings from drawings and produced brochures, either in Autocad or Illustrator. In Autocad I managed line weights on both plans and elevations that would then be put in Photoshop. Within Photoshop I added materials and colors to create renderings.
