A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPALFrom the Desk of Mrs. Lane

I can hardly believe we are heading into fourth quarter and Spring Break is up on us. Third quarter ends this Friday, March 9 and grades will be posted to Parent/Student Vue on March 23. As we enter fourth quarter, it is important to remind your child to continue pushing through until the end of the year. As the weather becomes nicer, it is often difficult to stay focused for many of our students. They need you to remind them to stay positive and continue to strive for success – especially our seniors so they are able to walk across the graduation stage

confident and with no regrets.

Our students and staff are continuing to exceed at high levels. We are very proud of our National Merit Finalists and our Presidential Scholar nominees. Both Olathe East men and women’s basketball programs are headed to sub-state this week (the only high school in Olathe that has both teams headed to Wichita!). Our Talon drill team just returned from Orlando for a National Competition, and our band leaves this week to perform on the national stage. The junior class is working hard to put together an amazing Prom, and we are continuing to hear from parents and students about the numerous scholarships our Hawks are receiving as they plan for college.

As the end of the year approaches, we are continually seeking input to refine two new initiatives that began this year. One is Hawk Hour. This was a new program offered to all students this year that allowed students to eat their lunch and seek out their teachers for needs during the school day, each day for fifty minutes. Students can eat their lunch whenever they choose through out this time, and can also eat with whomever they would like. Students are responsible for their own trash, behaving appropriately, and seeking help from their teachers if their grades are lower than a C. We surveyed our students and teachers, and overwhelmingly our students appreciated this extra time. We are working on how to make this more productive for our students who are not handling well the extra freedom this time provides and how to motivate students with poor grades to use this time to seek academic support. This time has given several of our students throughout the day a mental break from the bell schedule and has allowed many to stay in upper-level courses, as they know they have time to seek extra assistance each day. I welcome any parental feedback you wish to give regarding this new addition to the schedule this year and how we can continue to improve on this new initiative.

We also have added a 25-minute Advisory Time to our Thursday schedule this year at all five high schools. This time is used for our students to complete their Individual Plans of Study, through Career Cruising and to work on lessons that focus on the emotional and social needs of adolescents. Topics we have covered this year span from money and time management to resiliency, self-regulation, diversity, kindness and student recognition. We believe in educating the whole child at Olathe East and know this includes topics that sometimes don’t fit into the traditional academic disciplines. We have also had students share ideas on topics and have even had members of our student body create student lessons for students. Any additional ideas to improve this weekly time are also welcomed.

I wish each of you a safe and relaxing Spring Break. Once school resumes for fourth quarter, we will be fast and furious with several events to conclude the school year. Please stay connected through Hawk Weekly emails through the District’s Blackboard System, following us on Twitter, searching our school’s website where our daily announcements are included and archived and staying in touch with your child’s teacher. I am excitedly anticipating Olathe East’s accomplishments throughout the remainder of this school year.

S.a.l.t. of the hawks visit with student-athletes

On Thursday, February 01st, the S.A.L.T. of the Hawks partnered with Mid America Nazarene University’s Association of Student-Athletes (ASA) to discuss the differences between playing sports at the high school and collegiate level (specially, time management, off-season conditioning, competition, team dynamics and interactions with coaches). The MNU student-athletes discussed their current role on their team, personal experiences with positive and negative leaders, and how they have grown into a leader. After the large group discussion and a short Q&A session, each MNU student-athlete took a small group to help lead a discussion specific to our book study book, The Hard Hat: 21 Ways to be a Great Teammate by Jon Gordon.

German Club/German National Honor Society celebrated Mardis Gras, called either Karneval, Fasching or Fastnacht in German, depending on what area of Germany. The Club celebrated with games and general silliness and fried pastry called “Grebel,” a German heritage food made by Frau Hanks.

Celebrating Mardi Gras: German Style

1. German Club officers Negin Amouei, Bryan Kwon, Timothy Schmidt and Jacob Herling pose with masks and props in celebration of the fun-filled holiday. The club even created a Mardi Gras-inspired backdrop for photos. 2. Glacer Looper, Bryan Kwon, Meagan Li and Emylee Reed ham it up while celebrating Karneval. The group celebrated with lots of laughs and delicious treats. 3. Frau Hanks poses between the two German exchange students Laura Baumgarten and Leoni Frischmuth.4. German Club students play a German game referred to as “The Trip to Jerusalem,” otherwise known as musical chairs. This game incited laughter amongst club members.
