Greetings Everyone! It has been two years since we started GOing GREEN and it substantially reduced our administrative costs by 70%. It gets tougher year after year. Yet, the Hawaii State Society of the American Medical Technologists (HISSAMT) still manages to assist you build your continuing education credit. One of a few ways to meet your objectives is through your continued participation and collaboration in our state society meetings, which is TWICE A YEAR, EVERY FIRST SATURDAY of APRIL and OCTOBER each year.

In our Spring Meeting on April 7, 2012, we were privileged to, once again, Daniel Dwyer’s (Supervisor of Anatomic Pathology in one of our prestigious hospitals in Honolulu) presentation on “Cytology and Anatomic Pathology.” He succinctly provided information and illustrated the principles of cyto-pathology with great focus on benign and malignant diseases. Doctor Jeffrey Lin’s (Family Physician) lecture on “Efficacy of Vitamins and Natural Herbs in Human Body” was inspiring and comforting as well, especially to those requiring relief from vitamins - whether the sources are from the food we eat or from the supplements we use.

The emphasis of their lectures was prevention (diseases) and detection (of early evidence of illnesses). Although both prevention and detection carries price tags for laboratory tests, physical examinations and diagnostics tests, such medical necessities could save lives once the diseases are diagnosed and treated. It was unanimously decided by the State Officers and Board Members that HISSAMT will halt its continued participation in the AMT's Centralized Banking Pilot Project. It is only realistically sensible and responsi-ble that we should manage our own funds. After all, it is the society's treasury, the money from its mem-bership. Further, we would like to announce that Erin Trudden is no longer the society's treasurer effec-tive June 9, 2012. Ms. Trudden’s replacement will be discussed in our Fall Meeting on Saturday, October 6, 2012. Also, our dashing state pin and now short sleeve, black T-shirts with the AMT logo have been made. They will be available for purchase in our meeting in October. We hope to be able to secure a room for our meeting at the Leeward Community College in Pearl City. In part, the below information is the allotted time for the meeting:

As I write this message, many of you may have already had their 2012 spring meeting while some may still be deeply involved in planning your seminar. Your State Officers and Board of Directors work very diligently to prepare for these meetings and to have educational sessions that are applicable and useful in your professional lives. I have a personal challenge to each of our members this year. The best way to illustrate my challenge is with an imaginary situation: Imagine that you have a very special occasion about to happen and you want your family and friends to observe it with you. You arrange for a special meeting place. You call the caterer to arrange for food. You send out the invitations to those who are special to you. In anticipation of a great time of celebration you arrive early to make sure everything is in its place. And then you wait for the first guests to arrive. The time you announced on your invitation arrives and no one is there. After a few more minutes a couple of people show up. Finally, about half-an-hour after you planned to start the party, about five or six people have arrived. So, you make your best effort to show them a good time. You go through the motions, but your heart really isn’t into it. When the party is over you thank those that came. When the room is empty you sit down, put your head in your hands and wonder where everyone was. Too often the above scenario reflects the response to many of our state members. Planning a seminar takes a lot of effort and dedication. My challenge to our state members is to show your appreciation for the hard work of your leaders by showing up and participating in these twice a year events. I know for some of you it means you may have to use a vacation day from work to attend; others may have to spend the money for a night in a hotel, and maybe a couple of meals at a restaurant. I learned a long time ago that we almost always find the time and money for the things that matter to us. To me, AMT is not just a professional organization, it is a family. We have mutual challenges in life and in the work place. We all have a duty to our employers and clients to stay current in our field of profession. These seminars and meetings are one means of obtaining your training. One of the great things about getting together with other AMT members is the opportunity to be encouraged and challenged. On March 1 – 2, 2012, the AMT Council met in San Antonio, the site of our 2012 National Seminar and Business Meeting scheduled for July 9 – 14 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The hotel is located in downtown San Antonio and the AMT home office has negotiated a very good room rate of $119.00 plus taxes per night. The agenda to this event has been, somewhat, modified to make it more compact, beneficial and exciting to everyone. In addition, the site for our 2013 national meeting has been announced. It will be held on July 7 – 13, 2013 at the Omni William Penn Hotel in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. It’s not too early to begin planning for this meeting as AMT continues to evolve to better meet the needs and desires of our members. The AMT’s new continuing education (CE) tracking program, AMTrax, is now a little over a year old. Remember, each member is responsible for posting their CE activities on line. If you do not have on-line access, you can request the national office to post your information for you. However, it is important that each member maintain hardcopy evidence of attendance at or participation in each CE event. A certain percentage of the membership is audited each year to certify compliance and accuracy. You need to be able to provide this evidence if you are audited. At the state level, each society should retain the rosters for their members (in case these are requested) as they no longer have to be submitted to the national office. The AMT office continues to expand the on-line Webinars

and STEP materials for the members. I encourage you to visit the AMT website—browse, investigate and use them to your advantage. One of my joys as a District Councillor is the privilege of attending a few of the state society meetings each year. This year, I visited Hawaii on April 7, 2012; Arizona on April 13 – 14, 2012; and New Mexico on April 21, 2012. I plan to visit Rocky Mountain on October 5 – 6, 2012, and the Northwest Laboratory Symposium in Oregon and Northwest on October 17 – 20, 2012. For those of you who I don’t get to see this year, I look forward to meeting with you next year - renewing relationships and making new acquaintances as I make my visits in the future. Thanks again for everything all of you do to make AMT the greatest ancillary medicine certifying agency in the country. I wish for each of our states a great and growing 2012. Sincerely,

Ken Hawker, MT (AMT) Western District Councilor
