What if I told youthat the positionof your bed and

where you sleep each nighthas a great effect on yourlife, your health and yourdisposition? Would youbelieve me? I didn’t believeit until I started this line ofwork and witnessed hun-dreds of cases of “proof”

that there is something to it. Bed positioning is

extremely important infeng shui. No matter whatschool of feng shui you fol-low, it’s a foundationalaspect of the philosophy asit has a relationship to howyou position yourself in life, which in turn has an effecton how empowered you are

and, to a degree, how suc-cessful you are.

Gangsters, animals knowhow to position themselvesThe next time you watch

a movie that shows a mobleader sitting in a restau-rant, take notice that he’salways sitting in what isknown in feng shui as the“power position.” He isaway from the door, usuallyin the far corner, but facingthe entrance so that no onecan surprise him frombehind. In the same way, resting

animals position them-selves to face the door sothat all they need to do isopen one eye to see who isapproaching.

Bed positioning andempowermentFeng shui uses the same

concept in bed positioning.

If you put yourself in anempowering position, youcreate a better energy foryou to be empowered. Here are the “power

position” guidelines:

1) Be able to see the doorfrom your bed. This meansthat when lying in bed, youneed only open your eyesto see the door, and youdon’t have to turn yourhead or crane your neck. Atour deepest level, we feelmost secure in this position.2) Be as far from the door

as possible. There is likelymore than one place to putyour bed, and if you have achoice and it is aestheticallypleasing to you, place yourbed as far from the door as

possible. The best positionfor your head is in the cor-ner farthest from the door. The farther from the dooryou are, the more empow-ered the position is. 3) Avoid situating your

bed in the direct path of thedoorway. Stand at theentrance of your bedroomand imagine a light thewidth of the door shininginto the room. Anywherethe light hits is consideredthe “path of the doorway.”This path is like a strongwindy tunnel of unseen,

This year, CustomContractors Inc. (CCI)celebrates its 25th year in

the Hawaii window market. CCIhas sold an impressive 200,000

widows to more than 15,000 cus-tomers during that time period. “You have to adapt to the

times,” noted owner Luis Larcina.“As our customers’ needs change,we want to be there for them. Alot of our customers want to tran-sition away from jalousie win-dows. They are extremely hard toclean, let in dust, dirt and noise, and do not let your AC run effi-ciently. Most importantly, thejalousie window accounts forover 85 percent of entry pointsduring burglaries.” The aluminum-awning win-

dow has been CCI’s biggest sellerto date. The manufacturer, VictorSun Control, has been making thisstyle of window for more than 53years and converted several of itscomponents to deal with Hawaii’sharsh salt atmosphere. “It’s been a great product for

Hawaii right from the begin-ning,” said Larcina. “It addressed

all of the jalousie short comings,is easy to clean, seals tight, meets building codes and fea-tures Torque Bar activated camlock security. As Victor SunControl’s largest customernationwide, we have a lot of sayas to how the product is made, and the quality shows.” CCI offers endless glass oppor-

tunities for its windows rangingfrom simple tint (reduce glare),obscure (privacy), laminated ortempered (for safety and securi-ty), self cleaning (for ease) toLow e (for ultraviolet reduction). A close second in CCI’s inven-

tory of replacement and new con-

struction windowsis its vinyl line,PLYGEM (formerlyCertainTeed), oneof the country’s old-est and largest man-ufacturers of thiskind of window.Among the variousarchitectural shapesoffered are single and double slid-ers, single and double hung, case-ments and sliding doors. While all of the options may

seem overwhelming and confus-ing to the average homeowner, this is where CCI’s experienceand expertise comes to the fore-front. “When I go into a home, I find

some of our customers knowwhat they want, most are open topractical ideas and applications,”said CCI head estimator RobertAbbett. “We sit down and exam-ine the homes unique variables

including trade wind direction, path of the sun, privacy and secu-rity issues and aesthetics,” heexplained. “We then choose awindow and glass type to meetthat need.”While CCI’s core value is

home replacement windows, italso has extensive commercialand high-rise experience inHawaii. The company special-izes in Lanai enclosures(Kahala Towers and KapiolaniBel Aire to site two condomini-ums) and builds its own baywindows.

Walker -MoodyConstruction isa specialist in

asphalt maintenance. In2000, the company wasasked to restore and seal-coat asphalt as part of aproject and, things turnedout so well that Lyle

Moody decided thatasphalt maintenancewould provide a steadyflow of work for the com-pany. After testing different

products, the companychose MasterSeal — aproduct of SealMaster.

New equipment was pur-chased to perfect theprocess, and the companyhas since focused onrepairs and sealcoating.Today, Walker-MoodyConstruction serves as anauthorized installer ofSealMaster Hawaii. The heart of an effec-

tive pavement mainte-nance program includesperiodic sealcoating withan asphalt-based emul-sion pavement sealer. Leftuntreated, asphalt pave-ment will deteriorate rap-idly. It is made up ofasphalt binder and rock.Almost immediately after

paving, the asphalt bindercombines with oxygenand becomes brittle oroxidized, leading tocracking and weatheringsoon after installation.Moisture penetrates theasphalt, causing furtherdamage and deteriorationto the pavement. Sealcoating protects

against oxidation. Anunsealed pavementallows water to penetratethe pavement structure,

leading to base erosionand ultimately pavementfailure. Sealcoating pro-vides a protective barrierto stop water penetration. But if left unsealed, oiland gasoline will softenand deteriorate theexposed asphalt binder.Sealcoating provides aprotective barrier thatresists attack from oil andgasoline. high maintenance and highfrustration. Sun, rain, humidity and

salt are constantly bom-barding homes, breakingdown painted wood, aswell as vinyl and aluminumsiding. But thanks to mod-ern technology, a new lineof products has beendeveloped that looks greatand is guaranteed to staythat way. Windows Hawaii is

proud to distribute andinstall premium sidingproducts, and this summeris offering homeowners aspecial discount on itsCraneboard products. Craneboard’s revolu-

tionary, lifetime-warrant-ed products can updatethe look of your home andeliminate the need topaint your home in thefuture.Craneboard is a high-

tech acrylic product thatlooks and feels like wood. These products come in avariety of styles and colorsand, best of all, never needto be painted.

However, don’t confuseCraneboard with the vinylsiding that you may haveseen in the past 10 or 20years. Craneboard is an archi-

ed several unique features

to increase the value andperformance of the prod-uct. For one thing, insulat-ed backing helps keep yourhome cool; for another, patented solid backing alsoincludes Performguard torepel termites and ants.

Also, revolutionary Smart-Track technology, one ofthe product’s greatest ben-efits, allows your home tobreathe so that moisturevapor doesn’t get trappedin the walls and causemold or dry rot.

When new tech-nology makesits way into

home design, often itenters through thekitchen. The heart of thehome also is the portal forinnovation, and many ofthe technologies that wenow use throughout our

homes were first appliedin the kitchen.

Kitchen innovation hascome a long way since theexciting days when therotary hand-mixerreplaced the whisk - andliberated a generation ofhomemakers from thelabor of

beating batter by hand. Here are some new trendsand technologies towatch:

Removable wallpaper While wallpaper has

been gracing Americankitchens for generations, those who have shiedaway from using it therehave had good reasons.Applying wallpaper to anentire kitchen wall is abig design commitment. The labor of cuttingaround cabinets, cup-boards, windows anddoors means mosthomeowners would onlytackle wallpapering akitchen just once. Or,they may have reallyplayed it safe byrestricting their wallpa-per activities to adding

a border. And, even“washable” wallpaper hadto stay on the walls, where it would, over time, get splattered and stained.

A new product,SmartStick byMuralsYourWay.com,makes it easy to add walldesigns anywhere youwant in your kitchen. Themoisture-resistant muralcan be repositioned any-where in the kitchen andcan be reused hundreds oftimes without losing itsadhering qualities. Muralsfor kitchens can even bycustomized. Just submityour photo through thewebsite and the companycreates a custom muralusing your artwork.

Wireless powerElectricity is a current

and currents require acord to deliver powerfrom the source to what-ever is being powered, right? Not anymore. Theemergence of wirelesspower is replacing tradi-tional cords with electro-magnetic fields. While thescience behind wirelesspower is truly leading-edge stuff, the technologyitself has some verydown-to-earth, practicalapplications in thekitchen.

How many times haveyou had to move cordsout of your way whenworking with a small

appliance in your kitchen?Cords are inconvenient atleast and dangerous atworst if they get wet ordamaged. Designers andengineers are working onadapting wireless tech-nology for kitchen appli-ances so you can run ablender without ever hav-ing to plug it in.

Kitchen design contin-ues to be a launching padfor exciting new tech-nologies. And, today’s“innovative” kitchen tech-nology will probablyappear routine to futuregenerations.

Will beatCompetitor’s price by 10% with sameproducts and specs.

Ever watch those TVdesign shows andwonder how to repli-

cate the look in your ownhome?

It’s easy to incorporatedesigner tricks into yourspace, no matter the styleor existing decor. Focus onadding layers of color andtexture, and notice howhues flow from room toroom to create a cohesivedesign.

Choosing coordinatingcolors is easy when youhave the right guide. Lookfor color palette cards thatgroup colors by designthemes to incorporate afavorite style, from tradi-tional to rustic to contem-porary. Then draw thesehues into all elements ofthe room, including floor-ing, fabrics and light fix-tures.

For example, the newHGTV (R) HOME bySherwin-Williams line of

interior paints and suppliesfeatures eight designer-inspired color collections— each with 20 colors thatwork well together, nomatter how many or howfew are selected — alongwith expert design tips tohelp do-it-yourselfers cre-ate harmonious room-to-room color transitions.

“Many homes todayhave open-floor plans that

require close attention tohow colors flow betweenspaces,” says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketingfor Sherwin-Williams.“Our collections aredesigned to take the guess-work out of coordinatingcolors, and to give con-sumers the confidence andcreative spark to find theirpersonal color style.”

Pull together a well-

designed home by takingcues from the overall colorpalette to add decorativeaccessories. For example, aspicy orange vase on thedining room table can playoff a bold accent wall in thekitchen. Or update the lookof furniture with a glossycoat of paint. Personalizewith family treasures andmodern, metallic or glassfinishes for an eclectic, yettimeless look.

Designers aren’t afraidto make a statement with asignature space. Why notplay on the high-impactcontrast of black and whitein a foyer or infuse an elec-tric jolt of pink in a masterbath? There are no wrongchoices, because color ispersonal — and doesn’thave to be permanent.

Another popular designtechnique is to turn floor-ing into a flexible decorat-ing element. Flooring cansignificantly impact ahome’s overall decor byenhancing the warmth andbeauty of a room. To livenup a space, try layering avibrant area rug over ahard-surface floor or aneutral carpet — it’s easyto change as design prefer-ences evolve.

fast-moving energy. Whenyou sleep in the path of thedoorway, you have towork to “fend off” thisstrong flow, thereby losingpersonal energy whileyou’re sleeping.

4) A common miscon-ception is that sleepingwith your feet pointing atthe door is “bad.” This is aproblem only if your feetare pointing at the doorwhile you are sleeping inthe path of the door. If youhave no choice but to posi-tion yourself in the path ofthe door, with feet point-ing at the door, place asmall table at the foot ofyour bed with a plant orlarge crystal that willbuffer some of the energy.

5) Avoid having the wallto the bathroom behind

your head. The bathroomconsists of many drains, sothe energy of the bathroomis draining. When you sleepwith your head against thewall of the bathroom, it“pulls away” some of yourbody’s energy. The mostenergetically draining wallis the one with the toiletattached to it. If you haveno other choice but to keepyour bed in this position, place a small mirror on theheadboard, or on the walljust below the top of themattress, in the approxi-mate area where you layyour head, with the mirrorside facing the bathroom.

6) Consider the biggerpicture. Some people posi-tion their beds against asolid wall because they haveread that it is “bad” feng shuito have your head under awindow. Although having

your head under a windowis not as favorable as a solidwall, it’s far better than tosleep in a position whereyou cannot see the door. Ifyou have a window aboveyour head, close the curtainsor shades at night to coverup the “hole” in the wall.

7) Use your down timefor support. By sleeping inan empowered position, you can use the “down”time while you are sleepingto your utmost advantage— not only get more peace-ful rest, but to give yourselfan opportunity to be yourbest self each day!

Home improvementprojects don’t needto be difficult, and

with the right tools andattitude, they can be excit-ing as you watch yourhouse transform. Summeris the perfect time to lookat your home to-do list andget going. Here are some easy out-

door and indoor paintingideas you can get startedon today.

OutdoorsPainting the home exte-

rior, sheds, fences or deckscan be a challenging task. However, doing a good jobnow will make your entirehome look great for yearsto come. To ensure a good result,

begin by removing dirt andother items such as leavesfrom the surface to bepainted. Look for areaswhere paint is chipped orbubbled and remove with a

wire brush or wide-bladeputty knife. Using an elec-tric sander can also be realhelpful. When painting, use tools

that are made specificallyto help ease and expeditethe process. The WagnerPower Painter featuring EZTilt helps tackle a varietyof projects like painting ahouse, shed or fence andproduces quality results. The paint sprayer applies aprofessional grade paintapplication. Any way youlook at exterior painting, you can’t beat the cover-age, speed and finish youget by spraying. While you already have

all your painting suppliesout, grab a brush andupdate small details likethe front door and trim.

IndoorsThe first step is to take a

look at the inside of yourhome and analyze which

rooms need a facelift. Lookat the walls for chipped ordirty paint and the ceilingfor stains. Painting is aneasy and cheap way tobrighten your house fast. When choosing paint

colors, it’s best to look atthe furniture and otherpieces in the home and tryto coordinate appropriate-ly. When in doubt, lightcolors work best andalways brighten a room. Ifyou are feeling daring, think about trying one ofthe deep and beautiful col-ors that are popular rightnow in the color palettes atmany paint companies. Fill in holes and nicks

with putty. Sand and primethose areas before paint-ing. Priming helps ensure aprofessional looking paintjob that lasts longer so it isworth your time. Afterwalls have been primed,it’s time to apply paint. Rollers are the preferred

tool for many peoplebecause they apply an evencoat and hold a lot of paint. If you are painting the ceil-ing, you will need a rollerwith an extended handle toreach the high areas andhelp relieve arm tension.

BACKPAGECOVERSTORY

Hot weather is hereand hotter weath-er is on the way,

so it’s time to start think-ing of air conditioning. “It doesn’t make sense

to swelter through humid, windless summer weatherwhen an efficient air con-ditioning system can keepyou cool and comfortablefor pennies a day,” saidAire Conditioner Shoppeowner Neil Wiedemann.“And the higher the SEER(Seasonal Energy EfficientRatio), the more you saveon electric.” The operative word is

“efficient.” Old or mal-functioning air condition-ing systems are energyhogs that don’t do the jobeffectively and run upyour electricity bills. Airconditioning systemsavailable from the AireConditioner Shoppe arethe newest models thatincorporate the latesttechnological advances. They are unobtrusive and

virtually silent. Wiedemann, who has

been in the air condition-ing business since 1979,sells and installs splitductless systems on Oahu,as well as portable airconditioners. He also sellsthe less expensive win-dow units that are oftenthe choice for apartments, condos and houses. Heguarantees the lowestprices for any product hesells with installation ofthe same equipment. For10 years running, Fujitsuhas named him “Dealer ofthe Year.” “About five years ago,

the inverter compressorwas developed, a compo-nent of the condenser,

which is installed outsidethe home and connects tothe air handler unit insidethe home,” Wiedemannsaid. “Then last yearanother advance wasmade in the technology, making it possible to coolup to eight separaterooms in the house withthe same condenser con-nected to eight separateair handlers, all of whichcan be operated and setfor the desired tempera-ture independently.Automatic swing louversand multiple fan speeds inthe handler — the unitmounted in the home —allow you to control theamount and direction ofthe airflow to maximizecomfort.” Wiedemann pointed out

that split-ductless systemscan be just as efficient ascentral air conditioning, ormore efficient in terms ofenergy savings, dependingon the lifestyle of thehomeowner.

Even the window airconditioning units, whichare generally what yousee in older apartmentbuildings or townhomes, have been extensivelyimproved both in efficien-cy and appearance. However, the tenantand/or owner needs toobtain permission fromthe management companyand/or apartment ownersassociation to install anytype of air conditioning. The Aire Conditioner

Shoppe offers free on-site estimates and designconsultation. The compa-ny installs and repairswhat it sells. Wiedemann

credits his company’ssuccess to a strong com-mitment to customer sat-isfaction. The AireConditioner Shoppe’sslogan is, “We do it rightthe first time.”“When our estimator

reviews your needs andyou make a decision onthe system you want toinstall, you will have aquote the next day byphone or fax,” he said. “Ifthe customer is satisfied,we draw up the contract.Once I set a price, it’s firmand it will be guaranteedthe lowest available pricewith the same equip-ment,” he said.
