2019 Rainbow Warrior Volleyball Weekly Release 2 HawaiiAthletics.com

SEASON OPENERS: UH is 31-9 all-time in sea-son-openers including a 7-2 mark under head coach Charlie Wade. The Warriors have won five straight season-openers dating back to 2014.

PRESEASON WATCH LISTS: Off the Block, one of the nation’s leaders in college men’s volleyball coverage, released its preseason list watch lists which featured several UH players.

Lloy Ball Award (Best Setter): Joe WorsleyBryan Ivie Award (Best Opposite): Rado Para-punovKarch Kiraly Award (Best Outside Hitter): Stijn van TilburgErik Shoji Award (Best Libero): Gage WorsleyRyan Millar Award (Best Middle Blocker): Pat-rick Gasman, Dalton Solbrig

PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA: A pair of Rainbow War-riors were picked to the 2019 Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Preseason All-America teams. Two-time AVCA All-American Stijn van Tilburg was selected to the 11-member first team while setter Joe Worsley was named to the second team. Outside hitter Brett Rosenmeier, oppo-site Rado Parapunov, middle blocker Patrick Gasman and libero Gage Worsley were among the players receiving votes.

UH PICKED 3RD IN AVCA; 2ND IN BWC: UH earned a No. 3 preseason national ranking in the AVCA Coaches Poll, its highest to start the sea-son since 2005. For the second straight year, Hawai‘i was No. 2 in the preseason Big West Conference Coaches Poll. UH finished last sea-son No. 5 in the final AVCA poll and runner-up in the inaugural Big West Tournament. FIRST-TIME OPPONENTS: UH’s 2019 schedule includes a pair first-time opponents — Queens University (N.C.) and Saint Francis (Pa.). Queens is an independent which is began its first sea-son of NCAA competition in 2018 while Saint Francis competes in the Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association and finished 9-20 last season.

TOURNEY TIME: UH will compete in three in-season tournaments this year. Hawai‘i will play host to two tournaments, this week’s Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Warrior Classic and the 25th annual Outrigger Resorts Invitational, March 7-9 featuring King University (Tenn.), Ball State, and Pepperdine. UH will also participate in the BYU Invitational, March 21-23 in Provo, Utah. The Warriors will face McKendree, Princeton, and host BYU.

DEVINE FIVE: Five Warriors were selected to the 2018 AVCA All-America teams, tying the 2015 squad for the most in program history. Four of them returns in 2019 — outside hitter Stijn van Tilburg (1st team), setter Joe Worsley (2nd team), opposite Rado Parapunov (H.M) and middle blocker Patrick Gasman (H.M.). Van Til-burg was a first-team honoree for the second straight year and became just the sixth Warrior to earn multiple first team awards joining Allen Allen (1988-89), Yuval Katz (1995-96), Costas Theocharidis (2000-03), Jonas Umlauft (2010-11), and Taylor Averill (2014-15). In addition, for the second straight year, van Tilburg was a finalist for Off the Block’s In-ternational Player of the Year.

OUTSIDE LOOKING IN: The 2018 season came to a disappointing end when the Warriors were not awarded an at-large selection into the NCAA Championship. UH was surprisingly left out of the seven-team national tournament field. The selection committee instead awarded UC Irvine a bid despite UH’s two wins over the Anteaters during the season including in the semifinals of the Big West Tournament. The Warriors’ resume also included wins over eventual NCAA champion Long Beach State — its only loss of the season — and runner-up UCLA earlier in the year.

IN THE ‘SHIP: UH’s loss in the championship match of last year’s inaugural Big West Tour-nament dropped them to 0-5 in title matches, which included 24 seasons as a member of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. Hawai‘i advanced to the championship match in 1995, 2001, ’02, ’17, and ’18.

BRING OUT THE BROOMS: The Warriors made quick work of their opponents last season. Thir-teen of the team’s 19 wins were in straight sets with eight occurring at the Stan Sheriff Center. In 2017, 18 of the team’s 27 wins were sweeps including 10 straight during a 15-match win streak.

RARE COMPANY: Stijn van Tilburg became the 17th player in program history to reach 1,000 career kills last season in UH’s win at UC Santa Barbara, April 7. The Amsterdam, Netherlands native has 1,059 kills during his three-year ca-reer, for an average of 3.80 per set.

NATIONAL LEADERS: UH finished last season lead-ing the nation in a pair of categories - kills per set (13.62) and assists per set (12.74). Hawai‘i also finished in the Top 10 in hitting percentage (4th, .340) and aces per set (8th, 1.60).

OTHER NOTABLES:4Last season, UH posted its fifth consecutive winning season and seventh under head coach Charlie Wade. UH’s 19 wins was also tied for the 10th-most in program history. 4 UH won the first set in 21 of 27 matches and was 18-3 when winning Set 1 last season.4UH did not play a five-set match last year until going five twice against Long Beach State in the final two matches of the regular season.4UH participated in four tournaments during the regular season, hosting three — Texaco Classic, Waikiki Beachcomber Classic, and Out-rigger Invitational. The Warriors captured two of those titles (Texaco and Beachcomber) and was runner-up at the Grow the Game Challenge in Nashville, Tenn., and Outrigger Invitational.

THE BEST IN THE NATION: UH led the nation in at-tendance for the second straight year, averag-ing 3,856 per match, out-distancing BYU, who was second with a 3,425 average. Hawai‘i drew a nation-best crowd of 5,989 for the final day of the Outrigger Resort Invitational versus BYU and 4,982 and 5,966 versus Long Beach State. Hawai‘i was the nation’s leader for 17 straight seasons from 1995-2011 until BYU took the lead from 2012-14. UH regained the top spot in 2015 while BYU edged Hawai‘i in 2016.

HOME SWEET HOME: Last season, UH finished a seven-week homestand — its longest since

1998 — with a 9-3 record (2 wins were exhibi-tion and did not count toward its record). UH was nearly unbeatable at the Stan Sheriff Cen-ter in recent years, finishing the 2017 season with an undefeated regular season home re-cord for the first time since 1988 with an 18-0 mark. Hawai‘i was 13-4 at the SSC in 2018. UH has an all-time record of 291-129 (.693) and 160-74 (.684) in conference play at the SSC since 1995.

STIJN THE MAN: All-American Stijn van Tilburg made an easy adjustment to the outside hitter position last season. The Off The Block’s Bryan Ivie Award recipient as the nation’s best oppo-site in 2017, van Tilburg averaged a team-best 3.93 kills per set, which ranked No. 6 nationally while also hitting at a .328 clip. He matched his career-high in kills with 27 in a loss to UC Irvine in February. van Tilburg was named to the all-tournament team in all four of the team’s tour-nament appearances — Texaco Classic (4.00 kps, .513 hit%), Grow the Game Challenge (4.40 kps, .462 hit%), Waikiki Beachcomber by Outrigger Classic (4.00 kps, .490 hit%), and Outrigger Invitational (3.80 kps, .378 hit%).

NOT YOUR AVERAGE JOE: The reason for UH’s of-fensive success in 2018 was the play of setter Joe Worsley. Worsley ranked second nationally at 11.02 assists per set while also averaging 1.82 digs per set, which ranked seventh in the Big West. He directed the UH offense to a .340 attack percentage that ranked fourth nationally including nine matches in which the Warriors hit .400 or better. In four tournaments last sea-son, Worsley was selected to the all-tournament team each time, including twice being named the Most Outstanding Player (Texaco Classic and Waikiki Beachcomber Classic).

LETHAL LEFTY: After a stretch of six straight matches without reaching double-figures in kills in 2018, opposite Rado Parapunov finished the year with eight straight double-figure matches, including back-to-back 20 kill performances against UC Santa Barbara and Long Beach State. Against UCSB, he also tallied a career-high 10 blocks and averaged 4.43 kills per set in the series while hitting .404. Parapunov had 16 double-figure matches on the year and was second in kills (3.55 kps), tied for second in aces (23) and third in blocking (0.79 bps).

BRETT THE HIT MAN: Despite losing his starting job for three weeks in March, outside hitter Brett Rosenmeier returned to the line-up and tallied double figures in kills in four of his fi-nal eight starts in 2018. More importantly, he helped steady the team’s passing game and finished second on the team with a .940 recep-tion percentage. The Virginia Beach, Va., native tallied a season-high 14 kills, with no errors, in 19 attempts (.737) against UC San Diego and also had 14 kills (.346) against Pepperdine. Rosenmeier also tied for second on the team with 23 aces and sported averages of 2.01 kills and 1.17 digs per set, while hitting .294.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: Middle blockers Patrick Gas-man and Dalton Solbrig were a force in the frontline for the Warriors combining to average 3.05 kills and 1.98 blocks per set, while hitting at a .456 clip in 2018. The duo helped the War-riors to a No. 13 national ranking in blocks per

set (2.37) while also providing a formidable of-fensive attack - Solbrig (1.74 kps, .476), Gas-man (1.31 kps, .430). In addition, the duo com-bined for 20 service aces.

BEACH ’BOWS: For the second consecutive year, Brett Rosenmeier and Colton Cowell represent-ed UH at the USA Volleyball Collegiate Beach Championships in Hermosa Beach, Calif., and this year, performed well enough to qualify for the World University Championships in Munich, Germany. The tandem finished in second place at the USAV event and placed 13th at the WUBV championship.

UH INKS THREE FOR 2020: Three players signed their National Letter of Intent to join the War-riors in 2020 — Chaz Galloway (San Diego, Ca-lif.), Dimitris Mouchlias (Greece) and Guilherme Voss Messias Santos (Brazil). Galloway com-peted with the WAVE Volleyball Club; Mouchl-ias represented his native Greece at various national team levels, and Voss Messias Santos is a member of the Brazil Youth national team.

HEAD COACH CHARLIE WADE10th seasonAlma Mater: CS Fullerton, 1991

In nine years as head coach, Charlie Wade has resurrected the University of Hawai‘i men’s vol-leyball program and into a national contender. The Rainbow Warriors have made two NCAA Tournament

trips in the last four years while the 2017 squad ad-vanced to the national semifinals and tied the program record with 27 wins. Wade has guided UH to postseason play seven times, including trips to the conference championship match the past two years. His teams also reached the semifinal round two other times, including in 2015 when the Warriors earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament. That team finished with a 24-7 mark – their best since 2003 – and finished second in the MPSF standings (18-4) while ascending to the No. 1 national ranking for five weeks for the first time since 2004. During the 2016 season, Wade became the pro-gram’s third head coach to reach 100 career victories with a thrilling four-set victory over No. 1 UCLA, February 5. Under Wade, UH has regained its title as national attendance leader, with averages of 3,671 in 2015 and 3,794 in 2017, and 3,856 in 2018. After rebounding from a disappointing 7-20 season in 2012, Wade guided the Warriors back to the postsea-son in 2013 and not for a controversial call at match point in the fifth set against the Cougars in that quarterfi-nal match, UH may have pulled off the most improbable upset in tournament history. In 2011, Wade guided the Warriors to their second straight MPSF Tournament appearance and finished fifth in the final league standings. In his inaugural year, Wade led the Warriors to a 19-10 mark and a trip to the MPSF Tournament semifinals for the first time since 2003. Prior to Wade’s arrival, UH had missed postseason play the previous two seasons and suffered through three straight losing seasons.
