Jackie Schnedler,

Executive Director

Letter from our Executive Director…

I can hardly believe that I have been at Havenwood for over a year now, I wanted to stop and reflect on what has happened this past thirteen months. I have met over 36 amazing single parents in our program and been charmed by their 48 beautiful children. In December 2011, we hired Rachel Cox as our Director of Development and Marketing. Christmas was crazy time as I started to learn the routine of a new job, started getting to know the residents, and witnessed the outpour of support and encouragement for our single parents and kids. We started the new year off with much more structure and expectations of staff and residents. Then the focus turned to the Angel Gala, where we had a tremendous group of volunteers that made it our most successful event in 18 years. In February, we also started the first of our Apartment makeovers, and 10 months later and over 1,800 volunteer hours later, we are wrapping up our final apartment in the Adopt-a-Room makeovers. In the Spring, Rachel kicked off the Empower Hour Luncheon’s, Cocktails for a Cause, and Quarterly Newsletters to raise community awareness about the program. In May, we started the rebranding process with the help from What’s Ahead and by July had a refocused purpose, vision, mission and logo that reflects who Havenwood is to the community. We had some additions to our Advisory Boards and built up some of the committees. In September, we saw the change of the Advisory Board as Pat Creighton finished her two year term as Chair and Paul Wood was elected to step into the role. And throughout the year, Rachel and I have been out in the community to volunteer fairs, networking events, and group speaking events to help community members understand the strengths, needs and challenges of single parent families served by our organization and those we partner with in NWA. Residents have been engaged with the community and the facility has been cleaned, donations sorted, organized and distributed to residents, storage and other nonprofits with another 1,500 hours of volunteering! And of course, I can’t forget all the work with the residents, Mary Lynn and Kathleen! Overall, I am glad to be back in Northwest Arkansas and giving back to such a wonderful program. I pray that everyone has a blessed Holiday Season and can’t wait to see what the New Year will bring.

Tubberware Birthday Sponsors… At any given moment, Havenwood houses up to 21 children. A

need that continues to reoccur is birthday sponsorship. Many

single parents do not have the extra funds available to provide

their children with any sort of gift on their birthdays. Havenwood

is looking for a group of volunteers who are willing to go pick up

a few items each month for those who have birthdays. This will

be a new program offered to help these children starting in

January. If you would like to join this group of volunteers, please

email Rachel - [email protected]

For 35 years the Arkansas Community Service Awards have recognized individuals and businesses for their dedication and commitment to supporting volunteerism throughout Arkansas. Susan Kennedy of Bentonville was named a finalist for this award for her years of volunteerism at Havenwood. Susan has volunteered with the organization supporting single parents and children for over eighteen years.

She now is a very active member of the Havenwood Advisory Board, and is the Committee Head for Havenwood’s Signature Event the Angel Gala. She has volunteered over 206 hours at Havenwood this year already and coordinated over 307 hours of volunteer work from 48 different volunteers from Havenwood’s Angel Gala which was the biggest year yet in terms fundraising. Susan is the first finalist from Bentonville for this award since 1986. Awards will be announced in January. “Susan has been an incredible asset and blessing to our organization. She goes above and beyond to help our residents through advocating their needs, planning fundraisers, and connecting volunteers to our programs. We are very proud and excited of all of her work and dedication and she is very worthy of this award.” – Rachel Cox, Director of Development

Why do you volunteer? I volunteer at Havenwood because I want to make a positive impact in the lives of women and children. When my daughter was young there were several times that if we didn’t have great friends to stay with through a rough patch that we would have been homeless. I know if you give women the tools to improve their lives that the ones that want to make positive change can make it happen. Empowerment is about telling the women that they have the power to change their life. What advice would you give to others who are not sure if volunteering is right for them? I encourage people to find an organization or a cause they are passionate about and then determine how much time you can give. I know people are busy and I hear people say they don’t have time to volunteer. I know most organizations will take any amount of time that someone has to offer. If you have an hour a month, someone would be happy to utilize that hour. It doesn’t have to be a big time commitment. I always get more than I give when I volunteer.

How long have you been volunteering with Havenwood?

I have been volunteering for the “Empowerment” series since May of 2012.

Kayla

“I heard about Havenwood on the radio one morning. Jackie was advertising the Angel Gala and had explained what Havenwood was like. It was an answer to my prayer, that I could move away to a better environment.”

Resident Highlight

I grew up in Colorado, moved to Oklahoma, then from Springdale to Havenwood. I love dancing and arts and crafts. I am a very proud mother of two beautiful children – Ean and Meckenah. I moved to Havenwood because it was a good way to get from a bad situation to a happy, healthy environment. It was a way to allow me to finish school and provide for my family. I graduated college in September with an Associates in Massage Therapy, 4.0 GPA and making the President’s List every term. I had lots of love and encouragement from my boyfriend Dedrick and patience from my kids. I had lots of study help from my brothers and dad. Also Jackie was always telling me “You can do it!”

What’s ahead? EVERYTHING and ANYTHING!!! I can do anything Long-term: Open my own dance studio for kids who need a place to channel their energy and emotions. I want to make it affordable for those who would otherwise not have the opportunity, like the children here at Havenwood.

Patricia Creighton – outgoing

Advisory Board Chair Patricia Creighton, of Transition Architects, has served as Board Chair of the Havenwood Advisory Board for the past two years. She helped to spearhead the strategic planning process to bring Havenwood Advisory Board into a more active board. Under her leadership, job responsibilities and committees were defined for the advisory board creating a uniform team working towards a common goal, fostered a new level of commitment and energy and took the board to a whole new level. She helped guide and make a smooth transition as the previous director and marketing person moved out, and new staff came on board. The Angel Gala fundraiser grew 4.5 times in revenue while still keeping the intimate community that is Havenwood’s legacy. She worked closely with the executive director to use her expertise to create a forward momentum in the program to create sustainability, community collaboration, and work towards growing the program to meet the needs of single parents in Northwest Arkansas. Havenwood is very thankful for the commitment and energy that Patty contributed over the past two years to Havenwood. We are grateful that she is staying on to help transition Paul Wood, of Samsung into the Board Chair position and through the Angel Gala to provide her direction and support. It is our hope that we will continue building on the foundation that she laid over the past two years.

Thank you!
