HAVEN MISSION STATEMENT (adopted 2/26/06 by Haven Church)
“To honor God, to reach out with love to our members and the community
and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
PASTOR’S MESSAGE
Dear Haven Members and Friends,
As we begin our baby steps toward considering partner-
ship possibilities with Christ Lutheran Church, I turned
to one of my spiritual life mentors, Macrina
Wiederkehr. She has a gift for seeing Scripture and faith in everyday
life. What she notices often awakens and inspires me in my own
faith walk.
Macrina wrote the following after meditating on the story of the ten
lepers healed by Jesus and the one who returned to give Jesus
thanks before even going to get “certified clean” by the local reli-
gious leaders. (Luke 17) However, when I read her poem, it spoke to
me about God’s church. It spoke to me of our mission as celebra-
tion. It spoke to me of the joy of being disciples who get to partner
with the Lord to bring the expanse of God’s love, healing, compas-
sion, hope and “enough” into Hagerstown and our world.
I do not know what will happen as we begin our conversations with
Christ Lutheran Church. We may find ways to share ministry. We
may not. But this I do know. With prayer and the Holy Spirit, we
have an opportunity for renewal — to see our church and our disci-
pleship with fresh, curious and holy eyes. Let the following (cont.)
2
be a song each of us sings, an anthem each church aspires to live. As Macrina wrote, “In the spirit of
that grateful leper I proclaim the following good news:”
I used to be shy
I lived inside a lot
Jesus’ words fell casually into my life
and soon, I forgot
But the, one day
Jesus struck the rock of my heart (Exodus 17:5-7)
and I came tumbling out
singing a new song:
I’m a gift! I’m a gift!’
I’m God’s gracious gift (James 1:16-17)
My heart is standing on tiptoe
Jesus just struck the rock of my heart
And I know I’m God’s gracious gift.
Like Jesus, I’m given freely
What do I cost? Not a thing
If you run out of hope, just call me
If you run out of song, I will sing.
If you run out of salt, I’ll be flavor (Matt. 5:13)
If you run out of light, I’ll be there (Matt. 5:14-15)
If you run out of bread, I will feed you (Mark 6:37)
If you run out of heart, I will care. (Mark 6:34)
Rejoice! You are my sister,
my brother and my friend (Matt. 12:49-50)
Rejoice! My love is stronger
than a river without end.
I’ll gift you with my presence
I’ll color your pain with a song
I’ll catch all your tears on my shoulder
I’ll heal all your weak with my strong.
I’ll walk on the water beside you
I’ll hold you if you start to sink (Matt. 14: 23-33)
I only ask for your presence
I’m lots more scared than you think.
I’m a gift! I’m a gift!
I’m God’s gracious gift!
My heart is standing on tiptoe
Jesus just struck the rock of my heart
And I know I’m God’s gracious gift. Macrina Wiederkehr

Holly Place is a non-profit organization that aims to provide their senior residents
with the best possible care available in a “home-like” setting. During the month of
March w e w ill be collecting disinfecting wipes and toilet paper. Collect-
ing these items as well as contributing our $100 monthly pledge, is what helps keep
Holly Place running.

Once again, the congregation will experience “eggs on a tree” as a means
of collecting items for the Easter Food Baskets. The tree will reappear
March 10th, the collection will end with Palm Sunday (April 14th) and dis-
tribution will be sometime the following week. After we collect the food,
we will need packers, deliverers, and folks to phone the recipients to get
delivery choices and verify addresses, to help make the distribution a suc-
cess.
We will receive most of the names for basket recipients from Fountaindale
School
The “giving tree” seems to have been a success in that we receive most of
the non-perishable items we need for food basket distribution. Some of us
like the fact that they have the list of what they want to give, and then can
bargain shop. Others like to have the list with them to remind them of what they are to provide, fill it
and return it and even sometimes get another tag.
The idea is that a tree will be filled with tags on which there will be printed variety of items needed
for the baskets. They will not all be the same. Some will be longer and more involved like all the
items for Easter dinner (less the ham). Others may be themed such as enough of a single item for a
single family or multiple families. The idea is to browse the tree and select things that you want to
do. The tree will be added to until all the items needed are up. If all the tags are taken and returned
there we will have all the non-perishable items and the HUNGER TEAM will be responsible for any
remaining items, as well as hams, apples and bread from donations. Some tags request “egg “money
and some will offer a chance to earn the title of “Big Cheese”.
If this is not your style, you may certainly contribute using a “hunger appeal” envelope designated for
Easter Food Drive. If you want the fun of the lists but cannot get to church to select your own, call
the church office and leave your name. Someone from the team will contact you and choose a tag
and even pick up your contribution. Food Basket drives seem to bring out the best in us as we help to
fight hunger.

HAVEN’S BOOK CLUB – On Thursday, March 21, 2:00 pm we meet to discuss
MARY COIN by Marisa Silver. The author takes Dorothea Lange’s “Migrant Mother”
photograph as inspiration for a story of two women – one famous and one forgotten –
and their remarkable chance encounter. This is a lovely & deeply satisfying read. Plan
to join us for tea & conversation in the church parlor. – Joan Schupp
NEXT MONTH: Markus Zusak’s new novel BRIDGE OF CLAY.
LADIES NIGHT OUT — Ladies of Haven please mark this date, Tuesday, March
12th on your calendar. W e had to cancel our last L.N.O. due to the
weather but hopefully that will not be a problem this time. We will be meeting at
Ledos at 6:00pm. W e encourage all the ladies of Haven to attend, all
guests are welcome.
WOMEN'S BIBLE STUDY — Women of Haven will get together on Thursday,
March 28, to discuss Session Three of our fascinating & inform ative study
of the Gospel of John: " Friends for Life." We will meet at 10:00 a.m. in the Parlor for
about 2 hours. The study can be found in the March issue of "Gather" magazine or you
may pick up a copy on the mobile message board. All women are welcome!
PARISH EDUCATION TEAM
WELCOME TO LENT
We start the season of Lent with sobering signs --- black ashes on our forehead and the words, "From
dust you came and to dust you shall return." This is our invitation into the season of Lent (40 days
plus 7 Sundays) which to most seems rather morose or damning. Yet that cross of ash traces the
cross put on our foreheads at baptism, the sign of God's eternal love. On Ash Wednesday we wear the
ash of death over the baptismal sign of eternal life with God --- because God can do what we cannot.
"God can bring life out of death. God can join water and word, bread and wine, repentance and for-
giveness, and cross and community to fashion a new beginning and a new people in Christ. God can
renew and reform and revive life because of Jesus."
Come into Lent, my brothers and sisters. Leave the guilt behind and pick up the chance for renewal.
"Repent" means to turn around. The call to repent is a call to turn away from what hurts, harms,
lessens or drains you or your neighbor. Instead, turn toward God who can heal, enliven and empow-
er you. Let God come to you in the living word, wine, bread and Spirit of our Lord at worship. Let the
Word of God into your consciousness by reading the daily reflections of a Lenten devotional and let-
ting it percolate during the day. Let God help you give up an unhealthy habit or pick up a healthy
one. Let God's generosity enlarge your heart and open your sense of stewardship. Some call these the
disciplines of Lent --- prayer, fasting, almsgiving. But our actions are really portals through which
God can do small and great things in us.
Welcome to Lent. It's a season of new chances, clean slates and renewal if we but let it. Welcome to
Lent where our Lord is eager to welcome us into the home of God's love.
