HAVEN MESSENGER
1
It doesn’t happen all the time. But occasionally
you find THE perfect Christmas gift for some-
one. The moment you see it, you know exactly
who would love it. There is no question that
you should get it. You imagine the surprise and pure joy on his or
her face when they see it. It’s hard to wait to give it, but you do.
When the day finally comes to give the gift, you are soooooo excited
you can hardly stand it. As much as you will deeply appreciate the
presents you receive, the greatest thrill is seeing the joy on that per-
son’s face as you jump up and down, clap your hands and just can’t
stop smiling.
That is how I imagine Advent at its best. For the four weeks of
Advent we wait. But like curious children, we go looking in Bible
stories and daily devotionals... we search through the festive, royal
blue decorations in the church... we listen for clues in the Advent
hymns and carols... we receive holy communion with a keener
awareness. We wait for Christmas. And I imagine God, the angels
and heavenly saints, can hardly wait for us to open once again the
most perfect gift of all time, the best gift ever — God’s own self,
God’s power and grace wrapped in human flesh and laid in a man-
ger. That is how I imagine Christmas at its best. Adults and chil-
dren alike marveling at Jesus, stunned that God would do the im-
possible to be among us so that we could know how very much we
are loved and treasured forever and ever. (continue on page 2)

HAVEN MISSION STATEMENT (adopted 2/26/06 by Haven Church)
“To honor God, to reach out with love to our members and the community
and to share the gospel of Jesus Christ.”
Sharon’s Christmas Poem
She was five,
sure of the facts,
and recited them
with slow solemnity
convinced every word
was revelation.
She said
they were so poor
they had only peanut butter and jelly sandwiches
to eat
and they went a long way from home
without getting lost. The lady rode
a donkey, the man walked, and the baby
was inside the lady.
They had to stay in a stable
with an ox and an ass (hee-hee)
but the Three Rich Men found them
because a star lited the roof
Shepherds came and you could
pet the sheep but not feed them.
Then the baby was borned.
And do you know who he was?
Her quarter eyes inflated
to silver dollars,
The baby was God.
And she jumped in the air
whirled round, dove into the sofa
and buried her head under the cushion
which is the only proper response
to the Good News of the Incarnation. (By Brett Stalked)

And the angels sing and God joins in.
Christmas items, advertisements, and activities begin to barrage us even before Thanksgiving in our secular
world. We can get weary of Christmas before it ever arrives. Little did the church long ago know that Advent
would become a haven, a refuge, a peaceful place and time apart for God’s children to wait on tiptoe for the
gift of Jesus. Grab hold of the season of Advent (“coming”).
Come be refreshed in worship. Use the Advent devotional and candle you’ll receive the first Sunday of Ad-
vent. Consider Advent the Christmas gift you’re allowed to slowly unwrap as the season unfolds, so that when
the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem is celebrated on Christmas, you will be ready to marvel once again at the glori-
ous, boundless love of our Lord.
Your pastor and partner in ministry,
Linda M Alessandri
PASTOR ALESSANDRI TO TRAVEL TO ISRAEL FOR CONTINUING EDUCATION
January 3 - 20, 2019
I never thought I would return to Israel. I visited there several year ago when I also visited Egypt
and Jordan and was sadly disappointed. The guide was knowledgeable but very jaded and unenthu-
siastic. I traveled with a Christian group but we never shared Holy Communion in that sacred home-
land of Jesus. But, I thought, I was there and that’s enough.
Then I read in a Trinity Lutheran Seminary publication that Rev. Dr. Mark Powell would be leading
the January trip to the Holy Land in 2019. Dr. Powell was one of my New Testament professors in
seminary. He was amazing, not only in his knowledge of Scripture but in his open love for Jesus. If
ever I would return to Israel, he would be the one I’d want to lead. So I asked if an alumni could join
the seminary trip. The answer was “yes.” Then my sister, Denise, asked if she could go. They said,
“yes.” I am so very excited to have this opportunity to visit Israel once again and I get to watch my
sister as she experiences it for the first time.
I will be putting up a map of Israel on one of the bulletin boards in the narthex to show you where I
will be throughout the month. We start in Tel Aviv (1 night). We then will stay in Galilee (4 nights),
Bethlehem (3 nights) and Jerusalem (7 nights). We will do day trips to historical and archeological
sites.
I am going to ask our secretary, Mary Grabill, for lessons on how to send pictures and brief messag-
es back to the office while I’m away. I’m hoping they can be posted daily on the website and/or
Haven’s Facebook page so I can share some of the Holy Land with you as I experience it. When I re-
turn, I hope to share more.
While I’m away, I will be sure you have the names and phone numbers of local pastors who will re-
spond in the case of emergencies when a pastor’s presence would be meaningful. I will arrange for
pastor’s to cover the three Sundays in January when I will be overseas. I never go away without first
being sure you are cared for while I’m gone.
There will be 26 in our travel group. I will drive to Columbus, Ohio on January 2 to meet up with the
rest of the group. The next day, we go to JFK airport in New York City to fly to Tel Aviv. We fly back
on January 19 and I will spend the night in Columbus before driving home on January 20. After al-
lowing time to overcome jet lag, do laundry and catch up with mail and bills, I will be back in the of-
fice on January 23rd. You will be with me in heart and prayer, dear Haven members and friends.
Keep me in your prayers, too, that I return excited and bearing good stories and much “shalom”
from the Holy Land in Israel.

PARISH LIFE TEAM
Holly Place is a non-profit organization that aims
to provide their senior residents with the best
possible care available in a “home-like” setting.
During the month of December we will be collect-
ing laundry detergent and the month of January
canned fruit & cereal. Collecting these
items as well as contributing our $100 monthly
pledge, is what helps keep Holly Place running.

GET READY FOR ADVENT — ADVENT IS READY FOR YOU.
The four-week church season of Advent begins on December 2. Its an opportunity to prepare ourselves to
celebrate Jesus coming at Bethlehem and his coming again at the end of human time. It’s a time of anticipation
and hope. AND, it can be a great way to guard your sanity and breathe in some peace during the usual holiday
frenzy.
The Parish Education Team has been busy preparing some “tools” for your journey through Advent with
Jesus, Light of the world.
1) There are Advent booklets with brief, daily devotions (reflection and prayer) for adults and another for
children and families.
2) Everyone will receive a small battery votive candle to turn on during your devotion time. Turn it on
when you read the daily devotion. OR turn it on during a specific time you choose to “check in “ with God in
prayer (showering, getting dressed, driving to work, while you put your feet up at the days end, your choice)
OR turn it on when your family gathers for a meal and you share some “God sightings” or prayer requests.
3) After studying the devotionals, we saw four themes to guide us this Advent:
Week 1 - WATCH for the LIGHT
Week 2 - WAIT for the LIGHT
Week 3 - EMBRACE the LIGHT
Week 4 - REJOICE in the LIGHT
Each Sunday you will find reflections on the theme prepared by members of Haven. We hope you will
find they enrich your wanderings and wondering during Advent. We are very grateful to each person who gave
us the gift of their thoughts and stories. We also thank Susie Resh for preparing an Advent bulletin board in the
church narthex to help inspire us, too.
Unwrap the gift of Advent this year and trust“the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard
your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

I wonder: 1 . Why can we trust God?
We can trust God because he is faithful and does everything for His glory and
our good.
2. Does God keep His promises?
God always keeps His promises because He is faithful.
I also wonder, does your family have a holiday tradition
you look forward to doing each year?
Some people send Christmas cards to people in the military. Others bake cookies or do something
nice for the helpers in their lives like the mail carrier or the person who delivers the newspaper.
When I was young, my family would gather near the fireplace and read the story of the elves and the
shoemaker. The elves help the shoemaker when he is poor and has only enough leather for one pair
of shoes. Then the shoemaker becomes wealthy and he remembers the little elves who helped him.
They needed new clothes so the wife made clothes and the shoemaker made shoes for them.
After the story we would all think of ways we could say thank you to the people who helped us during
the year. Then we would make crafts to give to those people. One year we made candles by putting
wax beads in a candle holder. Another time we made snowflakes from all the popsicle sticks we saved
from the summer.
Many times we made folded paper decorations with a message on the back.
Another special tradition we did was to make a small manger (mom or dad did this).
Each time we did something kind or helped without be-
ing told to, we would take a strip of paper and put it in
the manger. It was fun catching someone being kind. I
really liked catching the grownups. I played that game
even when I was a teenager and when I went to college!
It was fun to see how we prepared our home for one of
the promises God kept. He promised to send a Savior to
save us from our sin. That Savior came as a baby!
Jesus!

ROOF REPLACEMENT
As most of you are aware the church, narthex and parlor roofs needs a facelift. The Roof Replace-
ment committee and Church Council has reached out to BFM (Bushey Feight Morin Architects) to
help us accomplish this. BFM proposes to provide services to include:
Design – BFM will prepare specifications and drawings for preliminary submission to Haven for
review and final documents for construction and permits. Electronic or PDF copies to be for-
warded for review and issued for construction. Bid documents shall be electronic to bidders.
Hard copy provided for Permit Application.
Bidding – Pre-Bid meeting to be held at Haven. Issue addendums to address RFI’s. Bid opening.

cifically mentioned above.
The above services are broken out as listed below for pricing.
The Church Council is considering a motion not to exceed
$11,000.00 for the above work to be completed. Such a motion
would then be brought to the congregation for a vote. The
Council has requested the Finance Team to suggest what Ha-
ven funds be used to pay for these contracted services and to
send a recommendation to the Council for its December 17th
meeting. Look for any updated information in the Sunday bul-
letin or on our webpage.

THANK YOU NOTES
To Haven Lutheran Church,
Thank you for your gift of $326.35 to the Lutheran Disaster Response.
As the long green season of Pentecost brings images of seeds and bread, deep and
abiding growth and abundance in Christ, so your generosity brings deep and
abiding hope to communities dealing with a disaster, providing water, supplies,
shelter and support. Your generosity makes possible both short-and long term care, sustaining com-
munities throughout the recovery process and into new life….
With gratefulness, Daniel Rift Director—ELCA World Hunger and Disaster Appeal
Dear Friends of Holly Place,
On behalf of the residents, staff, and the Board of Directors of Senior Living Alternatives, Inc., I
would like to thank you! We received your generous $1,180.00 donation to Holly Place, and it means
the world to us. Because of you, we can continue to serve at risk seniors, and provide them a safe,
loving, affordable place to call home…
Sincerely, Melanie Davis—Executive Director
Dear Haven,
I would like to thank our congregation and our veterans for their help providing me with infor-
mation and displays for our Veterans Day service. A special thank you to Pastor Alessandri, The
Evangelism Team, Don Andrews, Bill Byers and Joyce for their support and hard work to make our
Veterans Day special. Thanks to Karla Pile for the beautiful flowers in the sanctuary and to Kathy
Pensis for bringing the flowers to me, to enjoy at home.
Craig Meredith
