WE’RE ALL GUILTY OF A FEW BEAUTY LAPSES – WHETHER IT’S WAKING UP IN SMUDGED MASCARA, OR SHUNNING THE HAIR BRUSH BECAUSE YOU HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON TOO MANY TIMES.

But you may not know that some of these less-than-perfect habits can impact your eyes, including the skin around them, your eyelashes and potentially even the eye itself.

“The eye area is one of the most sensitive parts of the face,” explains dermatologist Justine Hextall.

“The skin here is much thinner than other areas and can quickly become dry and irritated.”

More than one in fi ve of us (21%) believe our eyes are our most attractive feature, so to ensure they stay that way it’s time to break those habits and prioritise our eyes.

BAD HABITBAD HABIT # 1WEARING OLD MASCARAWEARING OLD MASCARA

MASCARA IS THE STAPLE OF MOST OF OUR MAKE-UP BAGS. WHETHER YOU GO FOR HIGH VOLUME OR ‘LESS IS MORE’, A LICK OF MASCARA HELPS OUR EYES LOOK BIGGER, BRIGHTER AND MORE YOUTHFUL.

But if you don’t use an appropriate mascara, it could irritate your eyes. And the three biggest risks?

“Infection, infection and infection,” says optometrist Francesca Marchetti.

“The lovely warm dark environment of a mascara tube is heaven for horrible, nasty bacteria.”

To prevent any nasties, Francesca advises replacing mascaras and liquid eye liners every three months and washing eye make-up brushes regularly.

“If you have an eye infection, it’s important to stop wearing eye make-up and ensure you throw away the make-up you’ve been using, as the bacteria can live in it for a long time,” she says.

BAD HABITBAD HABIT #2HARSH MAKE-UP REMOVERSHARSH MAKE-UP REMOVERS

IF YOU ROUTINELY REMOVE YOUR MAKE-UP BEFORE BED, YOU’RE FOLLOWING THE GOLDEN RULE OF SKINCARE. BUT IT’S WORTH DOUBLE CHECKING THAT YOU’RE USING THE MOST SUITABLE REMOVER FOR YOUR SENSITIVE EYE AREA.

If you choose your make-up remover based on how quickly you can wipe off your mascara, your product may be too tough for delicate lashes and eyelid skin.

“If people are prone to sensitive skin, then the eye area will be even more sensitive,” says Francesca.

“Avoid highly-perfumed eye lotions and potions. Watch out for the preservative chlorhexidene (CHG), which you should keep away from the eyes at all costs because it can cause irritation, infl ammation and allergies,” she advises.

Choosing the right remover will help you wake up with bright eyes each morning so you can start your make-up routine from your best natural look.

BAD HABITBAD HABIT #3FAILING TO DO YOUR RESEARCHFAILING TO DO YOUR RESEARCH

SHUNNING MASCARA IN FAVOUR OF LASH TREATMENTS SUCH AS EXTENSIONS OR TINTS ISN’T ALWAYS THE SAFEST OPTION FOR EYE HEALTH IF YOU HAVEN’T DONE YOUR RESEARCH.

According to a Nouveau Lashes survey of 1,000 women, price is the number one consideration when choosing a lash treatment, with more than half of women (52%) telling us this drives their choice.

Meanwhile, just 16% choose a treatment based on the beautician’s competence.

In fact, the quality of treatments and technical expertise varies considerably from salon to salon, which means that if you don’t do your research, you could be left with a nasty eye infection or lasting damage to your natural lashes.

“Cheapest is not the best option, but neither is the dearest,” says Francesca.

“If imitation lash products are used that perhaps have not been tried and tested, they may damage your lashes, causing them to break off and fall out. They may also damage the hair roots, which cause the eyelashes to die off and not grow back.”

Francesca recommends researching the safest type of lash techniques, checking the salon’s online reviews, and booking an informal chat with your lash technician before treatment.

BAD HABITBAD HABIT #4PULLING OUT YOURPULLING OUT YOURLASH EXTENSIONSLASH EXTENSIONS

HANDS UP ANYONE WHO HAS PULLED OUT THEIR EYELASH EXTENSIONS RATHER THAN PAYING FOR THEM TO BE REMOVED PROFESSIONALLY? YOU’RE NOT ALONE – ALMOST ONE IN THREE WOMEN (29%) ADMIT THEY DO THE SAME THING.

But if you guiltily tug on your eyelashes while attempting to placate yourself with the belief your lashes will grow back, you could be in for a shock.

Trichologist Trisha Buller explains: “The lashes have a growth cycle and a resting phase, so by pulling out the lashes by force you’ll damage the follicles and possibly cause permanent lash loss.”

It’s enough to make your eyes water... literally, because sparse eyelashes mean your eyes have less protection from debris.

Trisha adds: “You will most certainly remove your own lashes and it can take weeks to several months for lashes to regrow.”

To protect your natural lashes, Trisha advises visiting a salon where your extensions can be removed safely without causing lasting damage.

At home lash extension removers from reputable brands can also be affective. To fi nd out where your nearest Nouveau Lashes salon is and book in to speak to a qualifi ed lash technician visit NouveauLashes.com/salon-fi nder/

WE’RE OBSESSED WITH OUR EYES. WHETHER WE WEAR MAKE-UP TO ENHANCE THEM, CREAMS TO PRESERVE THEM, OR MASCARA TO VOLUMISE THEM, OUR EYES ARE OFTEN THE FOCUS OF OUR BEAUTY REGIME.

In fact, our peepers have a direct impact on our confi dence. In a survey by Nouveau Lashes, one in three women (33%) said that eyes are the fi rst thing they notice about someone, while more than a fi fth (21%) say their eyes are their most attractive feature.

But intense beauty regimes, busy lifestyles and ageing can cause stress to the skin around the eyes and the lashes, leading to irritated dry skin and eyelash loss, and potentially causing nasty eye infections.

eyelash healthIt’s a reminder that our eyelashes aren’t just aesthetically pleasing – they serve a practical purpose too!

Optometrist Francesca Marchetti says: “Eyelashes are there for protection. They catch debris that could land in the eye and cause harm. So if you have short or sparse lashes, it can be a problem.”

This is because a lack of lashes can put our eyes at risk of nasty infections, which can even impact our sight.

The good news is that with afew tweaks we can brightenour eyes without needing toresort to any drastic measures, and leave our lashes intact.

LOOK AFTER YOUR LASHES LIKE HEAD HAIR

It might sound obvious, but our eyelashes are hair, and need as much care as the stuff on our heads.

Just as you cleanse your hair with shampoo and moisturise it with conditioner, you need to hydrate your lashes once you’ve cleansed your eyes of make-up.

“In order to stop breakage, it’s important to hydrate and condition lashes,” says dermatologist Justine Hextall.

She advises looking for some key ingredients that will give keep your natural lashes feeling soft and looking full.

“Hyaluronic acid and glycerine are humectants that hydrate skin and lashes by attracting and holding on to water,” she says.

“Biotin is important for healthy keratin to strengthen lashes, and plays a role in the growth of thicker hair. And vitamins B5 and B6 also promote healthy hair because your body uses these nutrients to nourish your hair follicles.”

TAKE CARE OF YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

Good mental health is just as important as good physical health. Learning how to relax after a diffi cult day at work and understanding how to relieve any anxieties is critical for your overall health, including that of your hair.

When life gets on top of us, our bodies can manifest stress physically. One such way is by triggering a condition called alopecia areata, which causes hair to fall out.

“Alopecia can affect all types of body hair, including your eyelashes, not just that on the scalp,” says Justine.

It’s normal to lose between 50 and 100 hairs every day without even noticing. But alopecia causes drop in small patches.

For others, anxiety can lead to a condition called trichotillomania.

This is when their anxiety is so powerful that sufferers feel an intense urge to pull out their hair, and feel a sense of relief whenthey do.

Thankfully, this hair loss is rarely permanent. When the stress is under control it can actually grow back.

“That’s why it’s so important that you look after yourself by learning how to de-stress, maintain good mental health and ensure you get enough rest,” says Justine.

TREAT YOUR PEEPERS TOA TREATMENT

Lash treatments are more in demand than ever before; research shows they’re now the fourth most popular paid-for beauty treatment, behind head hair treatments, manicures and pedicures.

“More women are putting away their mascara in favour of lash extensions, eyelash tints and lifts to give them a longer lasting way of enhancing their eyes,” says Justine.

“Women are looking for ways they can make their make-up routine more effi cient without comprising on the effect.”

And treatments can actually benefi t eyelash health; removing the need to wear mascara every day makes the daily cleansing routine easier and cuts the risk of irritation, eyelash damage and infection.

But this is only true if a trained eyelash technician has applied the treatment.

“Ensure you see a professional who understands lash care,” says trichologist Trisha Buller.

“Extensions and extra weight on lashes can all have an adverse effect on lash growth and condition. And always have a patch test before a lash lift and tint, as an allergy can be disastrous for lash loss.”

Nouveau Lashes eyelash treatments take your eye health seriously. Our eyelash technicians are trained to the highest standards, so you will get all the power of beautiful lashes without damage to your eyes. Find out more about our range of treatments on pages 22 and 23.

ALWAYS REMOVE YOURMAKE-UP BEFORE BED

Ever wondered why it’s so important to remove your eye make-up before getting your beauty sleep?

“If make-up is left to clog and irritate follicles, you can cause infection and infl ammation in the follicles, leading to eyelash drop,” warns Justine.

“The irritated skin in this area then becomes itchy, causing us to rub our eye, which makes the lash drop even worse.”

In fact, because it’s a particularly sensitive area, the skin can easily become so irritated that it develops into dry skin conditions, such as eczema and dermatitis, which can cause permanent lash damage.

Francesca says: “Without eyelashes the eye will feel very sore, dry and uncomfortable and can lead to dry eye, as the protection mechanism has been affected.”

To combat any eye complications, Justine stresses the importance of cleaning the eye area with a fragrance-free gentle hydrating cleanser that will remove make-up without the need for too much rubbing.

“I cannot emphasise the importance of this enough,” she adds.

So, next time you bat youreyelashes, make sure you creditus for all the compliments you’llbe getting!

She says: “I meet people at all stages of their life who may have booked a treatment for a special occasion, who want to restore lost lashes, or want to achieve a certain style.

“There’s not a day that goes by when I’m not delighted by the visible impact eyelash treatments have on a person’s confi dence.”

To help you choose your next lash look, use our guide to Nouveau Lashes treatments to decide which treatment is the best fi t for your lifestyle and look.

THE POPULARITY OF LASH BEAUTY TREATMENTS IS GROWING.

Pinterest reported that saved searches for ‘lashes’ rocketed 152% last year, predicting eyelash treatments to be the beauty treatment for 2018.

Such is the power of the lash that more than a third of women (34%) who’ve had an eyelash treatment are hooked and are planning their next fi x before the year is out.

And a third of women (33%) who’ve never had an eyelash treatment are considering booking in for their fi rst treatment in the next 12 months.

Deborah Law, Nouveau Lashes’ international lash trainer, believes the love affair with lashes is down to the way they make us feel. 21

Page 22: HAVEHAVE ITIT ALLALL - The Beauty School · in their fi elds of hair, skin and eye care to bring you the honest facts. With their advice, we want to arm you with the knowledge to

Whether you’re aiming for voluminous femme fatale eyelashes or prefer a more natural look, lash extensions can be fi tted to suit you.

Nouveau Lashes’ Extend Lashes are applied to each individual natural eyelash using an exclusive ‘weight-for-weight’ lash application ratio. This means your natural set won’t be weighed down, helping to keep your lashes healthy.

“Extend lashes are so versatile and look stunning, which is what makes them so popular,” says Deborah.

Your lash technician will select the appropriate weight, curl and lengths of the lashes to achieve the style you want.

“These lashes are perfect for those who have short or fi ne lashes and want to give them a boost.

“But equally, they’re very popular for those who want that wow factor. A lot of brides tend to go for this treatment because it lasts for the wedding, the honeymoon and the extensions are still there once they’ve returned,” Deborah adds.

For anyone looking to make the most out of their lashes Deborah recommends having them in-fi lled every two to three weeks.

When you’ve got a busy schedule but mascara just won’t cut it for your romantic getaway or the party of the season, Nouveau Lashes has you covered.

“Our Express treatment is a great way to quickly pep up those eyes,” says Deborah.

It includes all types of short-term lashes, including strip lashes, individual extensions or lash fi llers, which are cluster lashes that help to make your natural set appear fuller.

You can choose the lashes to suit your needs, whether you want them for two weeks or a single day.

“What’s so great about this service is how speedy it is and suits any budget, so you can treat yourself to a salon service without breaking the bank,” Deborah adds.

“Express is perfect for anyone who doesn’t want to commit to having a full set of extensions, which require daily care and maintenance for an extended period.”

This exclusive Nouveau Lashes treatment is all about lengthening and lifting your natural eyelashes.

“A lot of women like their own lashes when they have mascara on, but it’s not always practical,” says Deborah.

"For instance if we’re sat at a computer all day we tend to rub our eyes more often, which can ruin our make-up, and irritate our eyes.”

LVL begins with a lash lifting treatment to create defi nition and length. This is then followed by a lash tint, which darkens your natural lashes to make them appear thicker. But rather than the traditional curl that is often used to perm lashes, LVL straightens lashes from the root.

Deborah says: “This is a great low maintenance treatment to create beautiful everyday lashes. It’s the perfect treatment for anyone who doesn’t have time for a full make-up regime.”

The results last for up to eight weeks, although it’s recommended that lashes are re-tinted after four weeks to keep the colour at its best. Use a conditioning treatment to keep hairs smooth and fl uffy.

Lash extensions have traditionally only been available to the time-rich because application can take more than two hours.

Nouveau Lashes’ Speed, Volume and Style Lashes treatment – or SVS Lashes for short – has revolutionised the application of lash extensions, taking from 45 minutes for a natural look or an hour plus for a fuller eyelash effect.

“We’re able to reduce the amount of time the treatment takes due to the refi ned technique which is unique to Nouveau Lashes,” Deborah explains.

“The effect is achieved by applying several lashes on to every natural lash. But we never overburden your natural lashes, being careful to use our weight-for-weight application technique, so your natural lashes stay healthy.”

The SVS Lashes treatmentgives the appearanceof fl uffy voluminouslashes.

YourCOMPLETE SURVIVAL GUIDE TO EYELASH TREATMENTS

Optometrist Francesca Marchetti warns: “Poor extensions can damage the hair follicle. This causes lashes to drop out completely and in some cases the damage can be permanent. This can then lead to blepharitis, a condition in which the edges of the eyelids become infl amed.”

But it doesn’t mean that lash lovers have to shy away from their favourite look. By following a few essential rules, eyelash treatments can be as safe as a regular salon treatment on your hair.

So, don’t let your lashes become a sight for sore eyes. You can achieve the lash look you’ve got your heart set on with this step-by-step guide towards safe eyelash treatments. 24

BEAUTIFUL EYELASHES SPEAK VOLUMES. WHEN THEY LOOK AND FEEL FANTASTIC, THEY EQUIP US WITH CONFIDENCE IN THE BLINK OF AN EYE.

But many people don’t think about the chances they’re taking with their sensitive eye area when they use a salon without properly researching beforehand.

A survey of 1,000 women found that just a third choose their eyelash treatment based on the safest technique and only a sixth (16%) fi nd out the level of training their eyelash technician has received.

But failing to respect our eye health can lead to irritation and infection.

Page 25: HAVEHAVE ITIT ALLALL - The Beauty School · in their fi elds of hair, skin and eye care to bring you the honest facts. With their advice, we want to arm you with the knowledge to

25

STEP 1:UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENT TREATMENTS ON THE MARKET

Eyelash treatments include extensions, tints, lifts and traditional strip lashes, so the fi rst step is to fi nd out how they look, and how they fi t with your style and your lifestyle too.

Deborah Law, Nouveau Lashes’ international lash trainer, advises: “Think about the occasion, how much time and money you want to spend, and your expectations. You should also make the health and condition of your lashes and your eyes a priority.”

If you’ve decided on your look of choice, but you’re not too keen on a ‘one eyelash size suits all’ approach, it’s important to research the right brand for you.

Nouveau Lashes’ treatments offer a range of premium eyelash treatments that are tailored to suit your style, budget and schedule.

STEP 2:CHOOSE YOUR BRAND

Many of us choose our hairdressing salon based on the brand’s style and how it fi ts the look we want to achieve. Choosing a salon for your eyelash treatment should be no different and brand can be a good indicator of quality.

Different brands will use specifi c materials for the actual lash extensions (which can include mink, silk and other synthetics) as well as different adhesives.

The salon's technicians will also be trained to specifi c brand standards, so identifying a good brand will help you narrow down your search.

25

Page 26: HAVEHAVE ITIT ALLALL - The Beauty School · in their fi elds of hair, skin and eye care to bring you the honest facts. With their advice, we want to arm you with the knowledge to

26

STEP 3:DO YOUR SALON RESEARCH

You wouldn’t let anyone other than a trained expert examine your eyes. And you shouldn’t walk into a salon or let a technician near your eyelashes without confi rming their safety standards or that they’re fully qualifi ed.

Eyelash treatment processes use elements that, if not handled correctly, could cause lasting damage to your eyelashes.

“Extra weight on lashes from extensions can have an adverse effect on lash growth and condition, so ensure you see a professional,” warns trichologist Trisha Buller.

The sensitive skin around your eyes is also at the mercyof the salon and technician you use.

Dermatologist Justine Hextall says: “Inappropriate product use can make skin hypersensitive, leading to infl ammation and dermatitis, which can also damage lashes.”

Eye health expert Francesca recommends reading online reviews of both the salon and the technician and asking to see up-to-date safety and training certifi cates.

You can easily fi nd Nouveau Lashes technicians who are trained to the highest standards with a health-fi rst approach online at:NOUVEAULASHES.COM/SALON-FINDER/or search “Nouveau Lashes Salon”.

27 Nouveau Lashes technicians are trained to the highest standards, putting

the health of your eyes fi rst. You can recognise a Nouveau Lashes technician by their use of a branded head band. They will also have

TOP TIP

STEP 4:ALWAYS HAVE A CONSULTATIONPRIOR TO TREATMENT

If it’s your fi rst time in a new salon, with a new technician having a new treatment, a consultation is a must.

Deborah explains: “A consultation gives the lash technician the opportunity to look at your eye shape and lashes to fi nd out exactly what can be achieved by each treatment.”

It’s also a good opportunity to see how professional they are and if they put you at ease.

Some treatments may require a patch test, which can be applied in this appointment. Just as you would expect a hairdressing salon to require a patch test when using a new hair dye, the same goes for an eyelash lift and tint.

A patch test will check whether you are allergic to chemicals used in the process. Prior to your treatment, the eyelash technician will apply a very small amount of each solution to your skin and wait a minimum of 48 hours to check how your body reacts.

#NLHAVEITALL

STEP 5:FOLLOW AFTER-CARE ADVICE

If you want to maintain your new look, after-care is crucial.

When it comes to extensions, it’s important to keep them free from water for two days after treatment and avoid swimming or washing your face with hot water during this time.

You should also watch your eyes closely for any irritation, particularly when you begin to use eye make-up again. To ensure your lashes look their best, clean the eye area thoroughly before you go to bed. Use an oil-free make-up remover, which will avoid interrupting the adhesive bond. Avoid rubbing off make-up, instead delicately press or dab a cotton pad on the lids to remove eyeshadow and liners.

If you want to apply mascara to your extensions be sure to use one that has been specifi cally developed for lash extensions.

Extensions can last for up to eight weeks and although it may be tempting, you shouldn’t remove them by pulling them out. This will pull out your natural hair too, compromising your eye health and potentially causing long-term damage. Book an appointment with your technician to remove them safely or use a an eyelash extension remover from a reputable brand.

For eyelashes that have been tinted or chemically lifted, a lash conditioner can help nourish and strengthen the hair to keep them healthy and looking full.
