Studies FOR 2014 MISSION u

Social Issues Study—The Church and People with Disabilities: Awareness, Accessibility, and Advocacy

(written by Peggy A. Johnson; Study Guide by Lynn Swedberg)

The study Disabilities and the Church covers topics ranging from Biblical perspectives to overviews of

living with and adapting to varying disabilities. The text increases awareness of issues around disability

awareness by discussing attitudinal and architectural barriers encountered by individuals with disabilities.

The book intends to lead readers to engage in advocacy to help the church become more welcoming and

accessible to those with disabilities. More importantly, readers learn how an inclusive reading of the texts

makes clear the central place that persons with disabilities play in the kingdom of God.

Spiritual Growth Study—How Is It With Your Soul?

(written by Priscilla Pope Levison & John Levison; Study Guide by Faye Wilson)

Framed within four verbs, “pray,” “learn,” “mentor” and “transform,” the study gives an overview of the

setting for this question -- “How Is It With Your Soul?” – in Methodist class and band meetings, and

moves in a trajectory from the individual to the church to the world. The study is bookended by key

Wesleyan questions such as: “Have you carefully abstained from doing evil?” “Have you zealously main-

tained good works?” and “Have you constantly attended on all the ordinances of God?” The writers lead

the readers to reflect on their own responses by focusing on the four aforesaid verbs, pray, learn, mentor,

and transform, and learning insights from the lives of leaders from the Bible as well as those from Chris-

tian mission history.

Geographical Study—Roma of Europe

(written by Larry Beman; Study Guide by Dee Dee Azhikakath)

The Roma are often called ‘gypsies’ by others. Over the years the Roma, the single largest minority

group in Europe have been enslaved, shut out, shunned and even shot. Their women have been involuntar-

ily sterilized and their children have been forcibly removed from them for ‘the children’s own good.’ This

study will introduce us to the Roma, with an emphasis on Eastern Europe. The first chapter will explore

their history up to and including the twentieth century. Succeeding chapters will delve into the ways they

are treated in contemporary European culture, introduce their lifestyle and spirituality, and investigate

ways the church and other organizations are working alongside them.
