Have a Safe and Happy HolidayGreetings Kahkewistahaw membership,

I want to take this time to wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday. Understandably this year will be different than past seasons. COVID-19 has made us all plan and prepare differently, but I hope that your hearts and tables are full and that there are presents under your trees. I also want to extend my condolences to those families that have lost loved ones this past year; holidays are tough – stay strong. Losing a loved one is difficult, but together your family can and will get through.

I recently went through my own battle with COVID-19. I first felt like I had the flu, followed by the chills and the symptoms progressed from there. I isolated for 14 days and treated it with western and traditional medicines. I want to thank you all for the messages and prayers as it were those that pulled me through! Today I am 100% and even down some weight! If anyone wishes to chat about my experience, please drop me a line.

I am looking forward to 2021 and getting back to as normal as possible. Our ancestors fought too hard for us to just give up on our ways and traditions.

As you gather this holiday season, keep your circle small and use technology to send those wishes. Soon we will be back together, just not yet.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Director of Operations GreetingHello Membership,

As you will see in this newsletter, all our Program Managers have provided a brief update on their programs along with any important information. For the time being, all Kahkewistahaw First Nation offices are closed to membership. To make sure business runs as usual, our employees are working from home except for some essential staff. The Offices will also be closed for Christmas Holidays from December 18, 2020 to January 4, 2021. Leadership along with our emergency response team will meet closer to year end to see if we will continue working from home in the new year.

Chief Kahkewistahaw Community School has moved to online distant learning and will also reassess in the new year if this continues. Student Christmas Holidays begin December 18, 2020 and run until January 4, 2021.

With Covid-19 so close to home and the governments rules and regulations around social gatherings, this year’s festivities are going to be somewhat different. Even so, we are hoping you and your family stay safe and well during the holiday season.

On behalf of the entire workforce in Kahkewistahaw, I would like to wish all of you a safe and Merry Christmas.

Sincerely,

Justin Delorme Director of OperationsKahkewistahaw First Nation

Greetings from Human ResourcesGreetings and Merry Christmas!

The Human Resources Department is currently staying safe by working from home. This pandemic has really made it difficult to conduct our regular duties that require face-to-face meetings and interactions, something that we miss dearly.

We are in the hopes that this pandemic will slow down soon and the curve will flatten out, with society returning to some sort of normalcy. We strongly urge you all to continue being diligent in practicing safety measures put in place, as well as limiting your travel to essential travel only, as these actions will play a huge role in lowering the transmission of this virus. We are hoping 2021 has some better things in store for all of us and are keeping our optimism high for the new year!

So, on behalf of myself, HR Admin Assistants Morgan and Jessica, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year!

#staysafe #stayhealthy

Sincerely,Angus Vincent, Manager of Human Resources

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from the Finance Department! The finance team would like to extend our heartfelt greetings to the Kahkewistahaw Membership, Program Managers, and Leadership. It can be easy to get caught up in the “stress of the holidays,” just like in the fast pace work environment that we are performing in now

during these unpredictable times of this pandemic. If we prioritize, follow guidelines, and approach each task with the best interest at heart, even within our families, we will be OK. The holidays are a good time to reflect on the many benefits and blessings in our lives.

Essential Service DeliveryOne of the things that as a team we are grateful for, is being part of the continuous growth of Kahkewistahaw First Nation. We have the privilege of providing the centralized financial support to all the departments of Kahkewistahaw with this time of year being particularly busier. With the office being closed as of November 23, 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions, we have had to make some adjustments in the way we will carry out our duties. We will still be in the office delivering essential financial services with

partial staff and limited contact. Electronic communication is key in this area. In the office, the staff will be wearing masks and taking the necessary precautions.

Greetings from your Housing DirectorThe Housing department takes care of 3 portfolios of houses. CMHC (Section 95) homes, Band owned homes and Trust homes that accompanied land purchases.

We are completing new houses that began construction in 2019 and plan on having them occupied as soon as we can. Beginning in October 2020, we had started construction on a new 6 bedroom home which will be built by our housing staff, utilizing Immediate needs funding, and three 4 bedroom homes which are being built by Deneschuk Homes out of Yorkton. In the Spring of 2021, four new 2 bedroom homes will begin construction.

For our off-reserve members, we continue to provide support by means of the Off-Reserve Housing Assistance Program.

Sincerely,Tyler Jones, Housing Director

Seasons Greetings from the Lands and Resources DepartmentWe want to wish everyone a very happy and safe holidays! The Lands Department has had a very successful season with our leasing patrons and want to keep building good relationships with our patrons to continue to generate revenue off our lands. I want to acknowledge Chip Taypotat and Colton Taypotat on running the pasture program this year, working long hours, and ensuring all cattle were accounted for and gone before the cold arrived. We were able to purchase a new lands truck that will be used in monitoring our lands and for hauling equipment and bales.

The Kahkewistahaw First Nation Lands Department manages approximately 27,318 acres of land across all of our reserves. With a lot of land to manage, we want to ensure that we have good policies and procedures in place for things to run smoothly and efficiently. It is the responsibility of the Lands Department to ensure the best use of Kahkewistahaw First Nation reserve land and for the benefit of ALL members and for future generations. This is done by making sure any development that happens on our lands is sustainable and to the benefit of the collective membership. All the revenues we generate from the lands, such as grazing leases, agricultural leases and commercial leases, go towards benefiting and improving our community and people.

The Lands department also administers various land improvement programs, environmental initiatives, and animal control issues in addition to providing lands-related technical support to the First Nation, its members, and other agencies that interact with Kahkewistahaw First Nation.

In the past year:

Added the main reserve and most of the land to the Kahkewistahaw Land Code

Corporation and Kahkewistahaw 1907 Trust on common goals and developing an Agriculture Joint Venture – July and August 2020

Completed surveying of the main reserve of roads and subdivision lots this will help with infrastructure and road maintenance – final survey plan will be added to NRCAN soon

Updating the cemetery map to move forward on expansion – was able to drone the cemetery and create a map, will start plotting existing/known plots and identify unknown/unmarked plots, and will work with Elders to identify unknown/unmarked cemetery plots

Implementation of the Kahkewistahaw First Nation Strategic Plan with Lands Committee – Moose Jaw, October 20, 2020 – worked with lands committee to identify priorities and goals to implement the strategic plan for the Lands and Resources Department. We will be having a community meeting to review all current and existing land revenue with band members for band member and non-member leases and activity on Kahkewistahaw First Nation lands.

In the new year, we will seek to move forward with implementing the Kahkewistahaw First Nation Land Code by way of developing land laws that support environmental and community priorities to improve our lands now and for future generations. As our land base is increasing with lands being converting to reserve status from the Kahkewistahaw 1907 Trust land purchases, we must meet the needs of the Kahkewistahaw First Nation membership and protection of those lands for future generations.

Stayed tuned for upcoming Lands and Resources community involvement and meetings!

Greetings From The Health Department Public Health Advice for the Holidays: The holidays are traditionally a time to gather with relatives and friends. This holiday season will be different as we face a surge of COVID-19 in Saskatchewan. While we do not yet know what public health requirements will be in place next month, the Public Health Agency of Canada has released some general advice for holiday planning: The safest holiday gatherings and celebrations should be limited to the immediate household to help reduce the spread of COVID-19. Celebrating with people outside your immediate household brings additional risk.

Holiday plans should:

keep gatherings to your immediate household or within gathering limits

be prepared to scale down or cancel activities

limit all non-essential travel, activities and visiting 14 days prior to gathering

to help reduce the risk of exposure before the day Families and communities are strongly encouraged

to plan lower-risk activities, such as indoor celebrations with members of your immediate household

 virtual holiday and religious celebrations

drop-off or physically distanced doorstep gift exchanges

outdoor celebrations in open spaces where people can consistently maintain at least 2-metres physical distance.

Let’s all roll down those sleeves and appreciate the winter season! People should not travel outside of Canada for holidays. Travel between communities and provinces is strongly discouraged. I will share more information in the following weeks. I recognize this will be difficult for many individuals and families. I encourage communities to find every possible way to celebrate virtually or safely outdoors this season, and safely reach out to those who may be struggling physically, mentally, emotionally or spiritually during this time holiday season.

– Dr. Khan, Medical Health Officer, ISC/FNIH

The Health Department would like to extend “Season’s Greetings.” May the Spirit of Christmas bless your homes with peace and love. As we go forward in these uncertain times, all we can do is prepare and embrace whatever is in our way. It is only through prayers that we can find strength. All my relations, take care and be safe, protect your elders, look after your children and check in on your family.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Josephine Kaysaywaysemat, Health Director

Information to Guide Christmas Food Distribution During Covid-19There is no evidence that COVID-19 is spread through food made by infected people. COVID-19 is spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets. There is a theoretical risk that a person infected with COVID-19 could spread the virus by sneezing on food or by directly touching food with their hands. However, there is a risk associated with having a number of people congregate to prepare items for distribution. To be safe, if you are sick with COVID-19 or have similar symptoms, do not prepare or handle food or items for others.

Use good hygiene practices when handling any items to be distributed to member’s homes.

Avoid bare hand contact. For example, use utensils, deli napkins, or dispensing equipment to handle food or clean gloves.

We recommend frequent hand washing with plain soap and water or the use of 70% alcohol based hand sanitizer to reduce risk of transmission.

All people handling food/candy bags, presents, etc., for membership should be screened (travel, symptoms, temperature, etc.) prior to helping prepare or distribute items.

All participants need to be wearing masks (preferably medical masks, not fabric), well-fitting disposable gloves and conduct

frequent hand washing and glove changes if gloves become contaminated.

It is preferred that candy bags be purchased “pre-made” in individual packages, not purchased in bulk to be divided into individual bags.

Seasons Greetings from Chief Kahkewistahaw Community SchoolHello. We at CKCS would like to wish you all a happy holiday. We hope that everyone is doing well and keeping safe. It’s been a busy start to the school year, in spite of Covid-19, we are doing our best to ensure that learning continues for our students. We opened our doors to students on October 5, 2020 with a blended approach of in class and distant learning. Students attended school 1 day a week and were given homework packages. To ensure the safety of staff and students, we implemented Covid-19 safety procedures. I would like to thank all of our families who did their best to keep our school safe. Unfortunately, due to the rise in cases of Covid-19, on November 30, 2020 we transitioned to 100% online learning. Students are still required to attend zoom classes and complete all their assignments. To assist with the online learning, Chromebooks were issued to each household, laptops were issued to every student in Grade 9-12 and NedConnect WiFi devices were issued to homes that don’t have WiFi in the spring. We have also ordered additional Chromebooks. These will be issued to all students who have not been issued a Chromebook or laptop. All students will have access to a device and WiFi to make the transitional to online learning more accessible. We hope to see you all online.

Hurricane PrideDue to Covid-19 many things have changed, but CKCS Hurricanes persevered. This fall we carried on with our Hurricanes football team, we also started our Hurricanes Academies for students in grades 10-12. Students will earn two credits while partaking in the Sports Academy and the Cultural Academy.

Seasons Greetings from the Fire DepartmentOn behalf of the Kahkewistahaw Fire Department, we would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a prosperous and safe 2021.

Just a couple of points to share.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way we live and 2020 will go down in history as the year we witnessed the world under siege. As a community we are doing our best to protect our community members, but the reality is, that the virus is here and no one is immune. Our culture is strongly based on family and kinship. It is with this in mind that we ask that you keep your festive activities small and limited in size.

As winter is upon us, there are a few things that are beneficial to your home safety. Clean out your furnace and laundry rooms, remove debris from around your furnace and clothes dryer. Check carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms. Talk to your family about an escape plan and have two exits out of the house. Choose a safe meeting place outside your home.

The fire department is one the provincial fire dispatch system. Call

911 to report a fire, then the provincial dispatch center, and then contact our members through a radio and texting system.

In closing, we thank you for your time and consideration in these matters. Let’s have a safe community because even the loss of one home or a loved one is something that is worth preventing.

Happy Holidays

The Kahkewistahaw checkstops were raised December 8, 2020 at 4 pm and will be operating on a 24-hour basis until further notice.

Manned checkstops are placed on the 201 highway (south and valley exits), as well as on the Cowessess border. Other exits to the First Nation (including the Ochapowace entrance on Jacob Bear Road) will be closed as well. Any traffic between Kahkewistahaw and Ochapowace should use the entrance on Isaac Rd/Twp Rd 174.

Any traffic to Cowessess at this time is advised to use either their North or South entrances on the 605 road (accessible by Twp Rd

174 or valley highway 247).

Finally, curfew will be in effect from 11 pm to 6 am every day until further notice. Traffic in and out of the First Nation will be restricted to only essential traffic while the curfew is in effect. For traffic passing through the Nation (including the 201) during curfew, you may be instructed by the Checkstops to have one of our patrol units escort you through the First Nation.

Please be respectful towards the Checkstop operators and let’s work together to keep our nation safe!

Kahkewistahaw First Nation Operation and Maintenance Department The Operation and Maintenance Department are busy at this time, finishing projects we started before winter sets in. We finished putting all the sewer jets into the subdivision, so we will not have to empty them so frequently. We also finished putting water cisterns in and cutting the ditches on the 201.

We are also getting the machines ready for the winter. With the Christmas season just around the corner, the operation and maintenance department will still be doing their usual duties, including the water-delivery, sewer services, and garbage pick up. A calendar with the schedules and contact numbers of the staff, was shared on the website, copies were left at the store, and there is a copy on the housing office door.

The operation and maintenance department would like to wish Kahkewistahaw First Nation Members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Our holiday season is upon and would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Although holidays should be full of celebrations, joy and lots of food, we were all faced with unexpected challenges dealing with this pandemic as a community.

Over the last few months, I have been busy learning my position as the Communication and IT Technologist. So far, its been challenging yet so rewarding as it allows me to engage with our community and our members. My job entails, managing our social media, communicating our information from our departments (oral and written), coordinating public appearance for our leaders, monitoring the publics opinion and also offering support on the IT side of things with our phone system, printers, and computers.

I also take pictures of our community events and use them for our annual newsletters and yearly annual reports. I encourage your families to use our Kahkewistahaw News APP and the Kahkewistahaw First Nation #72 “OFFICIAL page as we continue to use those to update our members.

With that, I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas, a wonderful holiday season. Please remember to sanitize, practise social distancing and be mindful of travelling. See you in 2021.

Take care,

Andrea Starr, Communications and IT Support

Kahkewistahaw 1907 Specific Claim Trustees and Staff

Greetings Fellow Members,

Just a brief update on Kahkewistahaw 1907 Specific Claim Trust regarding the

proposed amendments that were supposed to happen.

The Kahkewistahaw 1907 Specific Claim Trustees have postponed the trust agreement amendments until late next year in 2021. There is further work that requires completion and hopefully, this pandemic will have subsided, so that we are permitted to gather again, the way that we have been accustomed.

On behalf of Kahkewistahaw 1907 Specific Claim Trustees – Justin Delorme, Leigha Taypotat, Leslie (Troy) Sparvier, Stan Bobb, Tashena Taypotat and our staff, Alex Lerat, Denise Peter, Kori Fitzgerald, Lindsey Bird and myself, we wish you all a very happy holidays season and pray for the health and safety of each and every one of you and yours.
