Be part of something different

The Welsh Government’s Department for Education and Skills is offering sponsorship to promote the concept of ‘Have a Go’ via event-led activity. We work in partnership with the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) on various activities to raise the profile of and engagement in vocational skills and WorldSkills within Wales. With the support of BIS, we are able to offer limited sponsorship opportunities to our network in Wales to be used to develop and implement ‘have a go’ activities that will inspire adults and young people to learn something new.

These ‘Have a Go sessions’ can be used to complement your activity and provide you with a hook to attract new audiences and showcase the learning and training opportunities that you provide.

For the Welsh Government it’s about working together and maximising our impact to our communities across Wales, demonstrating the value of skills and learning and encouraging people to try a new skill.

Encouraging individuals to ‘Have a Go’ is an important theme throughout the year. However, this round of sponsorship opportunities is geared in particular, to helping Wales contribute to the UK-wide target of delivering one million ‘Have a Go’ opportunities in the lead up to WorldSkills London 2011, which will culminate a three-week skills festival before and during this event.

The ‘Have a Go’ programme of activity is designed to provide a fun, interactive way of engaging and getting people involved in skills across the UK. By putting on an event or badging existing events, you can raise your organisation's profile, and inspire new and existing learners to think seriously about vocational training and their career.

In September, a three week skills festival is being planned to give your business/organisation the chance to be part of WorldSkills London 2011. You can do this by organising your own ‘Have a Go’ bite size tasters in your local area that will help promote your services whilst letting potential customers and employees try out a new skill, trade or profession.

The three weeks skills festivalWorldSkills London 2011 takes place 5-8 October 2011 at ExCel in London. In the lead-up to and throughout the week of the event, a nation-wide three-week skills festival will take place. Each week has a different theme:

Skills for the Future: 19 - 26 September 2011 - An opportunity to show young people that there is a real alternative to the academic route

Skills Means Business: 26 September - 3 October 2011 - This theme emphasises that vocational careers are real and rewarding careers.

Skills Ambitions: 3- 9 October 2011- This activity is about highlighting how, ambitious young people, can get ahead with vocational training.

Through the development of themed creative and interactive skills days, local businesses will be encouraged to allow young people to visit and provide skills demonstrations to inspire the next generation.
