Name, theme and date"Iter Vitis - The Ways of the Vine in Europe” is a door onto exceptional wine territories. Involving 18 countries, it has its origins in the role of the agricultural landscape linked

to wine production as an element of European identity. Certified by the Council of Europe in 2009, this

cultural route is about discovering great wies, the finished product, but also unique landscapes, ancient know-how,

historical vineyards and the people living there.

Countries

The Iter Vitis Route involvies 18 countries:

Armenia, Austria, Azerbaijan, Croatia, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Malta , Republic of Moldova, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Macedonia.

Objectives

The aim of this Route is to focus on the wine-growing landscape

as a sustainable tourism destination. The route also aims to promote vineyards as a part

of European identity, as a testimony to an ancient know-how and to the result of man’s

labour.

General description- This is a door onto exceptional wine territories.- These tourism activities help to create a "living

landscape". They generate economic opportunities for the local population and for what is produced in

the vineyards: wine.- Wine tells the story of the life of people living in

the territory. It creates social connections with the men and women that live there.

- It also promotes the idea of respect for the environment.

- It protect vineyards by defending them from globalisation.

Tourism potential and tourist offers

-Europe’s vineyards count for more than three million hectares and 5% of European agricultural land. There are ten thousand types of vines.

- A huge number of festivals around the world: German (19), Hungary (22), various festivals in France, Argentina, Malta, Cyprus, Portugal, Poland.
