Application for financial contribution

Manchi School for deprived children, Balapur, Hyderabad, India In 1999, we received funds from the Swiss donors to purchase land to construct a large building to

establish and run the English-medium Manchi School in Balapur, 15 km from Hyderabad, exclusively

for very poor children. Predominantly lower middle class and very poor people inhabit this region.

The school comprises a nursery, kindergarten, and 1st to 10th grade classes. 513 pupils from

deprived families regularly attend the school, they are taught by 35 teachers. Due to the international

financial crisis, several donors withdrew their support. Now, we are in a embarrassing situation. After

several years’ of our efforts and hard work, children who were doing so well in their studies will again

become the street vagabonds.

Since we can charge the extremely poor families only symbolic school fees, we depend on donations to continue to run the Manchi School. Frequently teachers leave because they are paid low compare to market rate. Therefore, we had to revise the budget for the next academic year 2009 / 2010 to about CHF 140,000.- Enclosed please find a five-year budget. We would highly appreciate if you could consider your financial support to continue to run without interruption our Manchi School. What is HATI?

The HATI Foundation (Humanitarian Assistance for Tradition and Innovation) was established in

Zurich, Switzerland in 1995. It is a non-profit and non-governmental organisation and operates under

the supervision of the Swiss Federal Ministry of the Interior. Donations to HATI are tax-deductible.

HATI ensures the judicious monitoring of all its projects, in particular the proper utilisation of funds

donated to HATI school projects in India. Most administrative work is undertaken on a voluntary

basis.

Role of HATI and ICF:

In order to realise its self-help projects, HATI sponsors and works in close collaboration with ICF (Intercultural Cooperation Foundation), an Indian non-governmental organisation (NGO). Located in Hyderabad, India, ICF was established in 1986. HATI is ICF’s only source of funds. HATI and ICF have no religious or political affiliations, and both organisations are independent of any government involvement. Dr. Asif J. Mirza is Chairman and Managing Director of ICF INDIA, Hyderabad, as well as president of the HATI Foundation, Zurich. Please find enclosed the list of board members.

ICF is currently transforming Manchi School into a model higher secondary school, where the

admission of deprived children will have first priority. ICF has also established a computer institute

and a vocational training centre. Manchi School provides literacy and vocational training, such as

embroidery, tailoring, handicrafts and social education classes for the pupils' parents and other

illiterate women and young girls. These measures afford them better opportunities to earn a living, as

there is an acute shortage of skilled workers.

2

The children qualifying from our school – most of them first-generation learners - will benefit from

enhanced employment opportunities. They will be able to find employment or to initiate their own

business ventures to become self-reliant.

ICF has successfully established model schools. The results achieved so far are encouraging. This

model can be applied to other regions that need to find solutions to improve living conditions.

Obtaining adequate funds would enable us to continue to run our schools more effectively.

Education is the first step towards finding workable solutions. Educating children and motivating

them to develop self-help habits and skills will result in their becoming independent of outside help.

ICF projects are based on the conviction that people can increase their organisational capabilities

and skills in all areas of life as well as gain greater confidence in their capacity for self-help. Any

deprived population in the world could benefit from the ICF model.

Background information on Dr. Asif J. Mirza

Since 1967 his professional career has essentially been in research and consultancy at

such reputed organisations as the OECD and UNESCO in Paris; UN, WHO, ILO, in

Geneva; Credit Suisse (Head Office) in Zürich and European private business

enterprises. He organised international seminars. As a keynote speaker he participated

in international symposiums on education planning and rural migration. He wrote

newsletters on world economic and financial forecasts. In 1985, he became a founding

member of the Swiss-India Chamber of Commerce, Zürich. In 1986, he established

PAMIRCO Trade Limited in Zürich, to promote sustainable development programmes.

1987 - 1994: As Executive Director of ICC (Inter Cultural Cooperation) International,

Zürich and its affiliate IDC (Intercultural Development Corporation) he organised

seminars on rural rehabilitation, migration, child labour and poverty. He developed

worldwide contacts for fundraising to sponsor and create innovative education

programmes.

ICF (Intercultural Cooperation Foundation), Hyderabad, India, was established in 1986.

In 1989, Dr. Mirza was elected as a life trustee of ICF and later became Chairman and

CEO. He developed a project on self-help technique to build low-cost environment

friendly mud houses and to expand schooling facilities for abandoned children of

squatters in city slums and villages. He supplemented conventional education with

innovative vocational training for deprived children and their parents.

In 1994/95, he established HATI Foundation and HATI Association (Humanitarian

Assistance for Tradition and Innovation) as Swiss non-profit organisations in Zürich.

HATI is free from religious, ethnic, social and political pressure. Among the 150

members of HATI Association are distinguished scientists, sociologists,

environmentalists, businessmen, etc.

To alleviate rural poverty and to control migration of the desperate rural population to

urban slums, Dr. Mirza initiated programmes for housing and general improvement of

the environmental condition of the village. He also established two schools for deprived

children near Hyderabad, in India. About 1100 pupils regularly attend the schools,

where vocational training in handicraft, embroidery, stitching, drawing, carpentry, etc.

for students from class VI, especially girls, is effectively carried out. Many girls are

attending the sewing and embroidery courses. Students are also learning to type and

the basics of computer. The main idea of both programmes is to help people to help

themselves and not to give relief through charity. The success of these schools is due

to the good quality of education offered by dedicated teachers. For details, please see

the outlines of HATI Foundation.
