Protect Your Child’s Teeth from Harm on Halloween
More than 90 percent of children go trick or treating and return homewith bags full of sugary candy that can turn anyone’s mouth into anightmare. By taking preventive steps, however, children can enjoyHalloween without harming their teeth.
Recognizing that candy consumption is almost unavoidable at thistime of the year, the Academy of General Dentistry recently issued apress release which rated the best and worst Halloween candyoptions for children’s teeth.
Best: 1. Sugar-free lollipops and hard candies: These treats stimu-late saliva, which prevents dry mouth. A dry mouthallows plaque to build up on teeth faster, leading to anincreased risk of cavities.
2. Sugar-free gum: Chewing gum can actually prevent cavities, not only because it helps to dislodge food particles from theteeth, but also because it increases saliva. Saliva works to neu-tralize the acids of the mouth and prevent tooth decay.
3. Dark chocolate: Chocolates are loaded with sugar, but studieshave shown that the antioxidants in dark chocolate can be goodfor the heart and may even lower blood pressure. Just be sureto eat it in moderation.
Worst: 1. Chewy/sticky sweets: Gummy candies, taffy, and evendried fruit can be difficult for children and adults to
resist, but they are a serious source of tooth decay, par-ticularly when they get stuck in the crevices betweenteeth and make it nearly impossible for saliva to washaway.
2. Sour candies: High acid levels in these treats can break downtooth enamel quickly.
3. Sugary snacks: Candy corn, cookies, and cake all contain ahigh amount of sugar, which can cause tooth decay.
So closely monitor your child’s candy intake this Halloween—and allyear round—and continue to promote good oral health habits.

To our readers:
During the past three weeks, we have approached you witha request for assistance in helping us meet the threateningchallenges of continuing to publish a free circulation newspaperfor our community.
We don’t face these challenges alone. Throughout thenation, newspapers are struggling, have dramatically changedtheir formats, or have goine out of business entirely due toproduction costs, declining revenue from advertisers, and thechanging ways in which people choose to access their newstoday.
Your response to our appeal has been overwhelming andtouching.
We’ve received over 2,000 responses in just the first weekfollowing distribution of our “voluntary subscription”envelopes. Along with financial contributions came words ofkindness, appreciation, and encouragement.
“The Reminder has been a valuable and useful weekly eventat my home as long as I can remember,” wrote Ruth Kosbar.“For many reasons, it would be missed if it did not arrive.”
We can’t think of better words to describe how we feel aboutour mission than those. We’ve always considered our work tobe a weekly celebration of what’s good and great about Barry
County. Whether it’s a wedding announcement, a school play,or a youngster who presented his piggy bank savings to thelocal food bank, we’re here to commemorate those joys in our“community scrapbook.”
As diverse as our interests, vocations, and hobbies are, thenewspaper is what connects a community. We thank you foryour positive financial response to our appeal and look forwardto serving you as that valued community connection.
For those who may just be learning of our “voluntarysubscription” program and still wish to be a part of it, weoffer the attached form below. You’re also welcome to stop byour office to pick up a giving envelope if you've lost or misplacedyours or to make your donation. We’ll be happy, of course, toget you an envelope if you’d like to call us at 269-945-9554.
Thank you for being such a wonderful community aboutwhich we celebrate each week.
