Hastings Mayor Bob May, passed away peacefullyTuesday, October 16, after a long battle with cancer. Hewill be sadly missed.

“Mayor Bob” served faithfully on the Hastings CityCouncil for over 20 years. He was appointed as mayorpro-tem 2001-03, was elected mayor in 2004 and re-elected in 2008. He loved serving and promoting theCity of Hastings and was well known for being anaggressive advocate on behalf of Michigan communitieswith the legislators in Lansing. He was recognized as theAdvocate of the Year 2008 by the Michigan Associationof Mayors.

Mayor May was a dedicated public servant throughouthis life. A decorated Viet Nam vet, he served in the U.S.Navy. He was a member of the Nashville VFW, also amember and past commander of American Legion Post45 in Hastings, and the current commander of the Sonsof the Legion.

Over the years Bob's kind and gentle spirit impacted thelives of so many in our community, and he supported theyouth of Hastings. Bob has always been very active inthe Boy Scouts of America, first as a scout, then as aleader. In 2003 the Boy Scouts presented him with anaward for saving a woman from drowning.

Bob was extremely generous with his time and was amember of the Hastings Kiwanis Club, the FirstPresbyterian Church of Hastings and was awarded theBook of Golden Deeds in 2008. He also participated inthe March of Dimes Walk for Babies and Relay for Lifeand was honored with the Robert L. May HumanitarianAward from the American Cancer Society.

Hastings City Hall will be closed from approximately10am to 2pm Monday, Oct. 22, to allow city employeesto attend the funeral. Services will be at 11am Mondayat First Presbyterian Church, 405 N. M-37 Highway.

After more than 60 years, people still ask, “How do youmanage to keep publishing a free newspaper everyweek?”

For most of those 60 years, the answer has been easy:The Reminder exists because of the support we receivefrom our local advertisers. That’s a business model thatworked -- in more favorable economic times. Today, witha sluggish economy and the loss of many local businessesthat provided us advertising revenue, we face a difficultdilemma.

Newsprint prices have increased exponentially as hasthe price of ink and the gasoline we use to receivesupplies and to deliver your free newspaper.

As a publishing company, our efforts have always beento ensure these community treasures. In the face of thefinancial challenge that every newspaper nationwide isexperiencing, we have increased our debt exposure bynearly $500,000 to a level that’s now testing financialprudence.

We remain loyal to the importance newspapers have insupporting our communities. We cover it all: weddings,births, graduations, and deaths; local sports and schoolevents of all types; church notices and events; communitycelebrations. However, if we are going to continue todeliver local news to our markets every week, we mustnow ask for the help of our readers in this effort.
