We will follow through and encourage your child while in care. Potty training will bedone in a relaxed manner with the cooperation of the family. We require that thechild be at least 2 years of age and must also show signs of readiness. (Please readthe Potty Training Readiness Checklist below.) Positive reinforcements andconsistency must be continued at home.

The child must be kept in pull-ups at all times. Please keep in mind that the activitylevel here at the center can distract your child from responding to an urge to usethe potty, more so than at your home. Therefore we will use diapers until your childcan and will announce that he/she must use the bathroom and can control his/herbladder and bowels for a few minutes beyond that announcement. It is requiredthat parents provide pull-ups, diaper (until child is ready for pull-ups only) and afew extra changes of clothing.

● Proper ClothingDo not bring your child in panties or underwear until he/she has naptime andbedtime control established. During potty training your child needs to be dressed in"User friendly” clothing as much as possible. The best items are shorts and pantswith elastic waist. Please Do Not dress your child in the following:

● No tight clothing● No shirts that snap in the crotch● No pants with snaps & zippers● No overalls or bib type clothing● No belts● No one piece outfits

The clothes listed above can make it difficult for your child to reach the potty intime. Your child also needs to be able to pull his/her pants up and down and theseitems will hinder your child's ability to do so.

● Required SuppliesThe following items are to be left at the childcare and replaced as needed. Soiledclothes will be returned in a plastic bag at the end of the day.Two (2) changes of clothing including socks (an extra pair of shoes if available) Abag of pull-ups - you will be notified when the supply is running low.Potty Learning Schedule For the first week, the child will be scheduled to use thePotty at consistent times of the day whether the child indicates the need to use thePotty or not.Upon the arrival at the center Before and after breakfast Before and after lunchBefore and after nap Before and after going outside Just before going homePotty Training Readiness ChecklistVerbal Stages of Readiness Basic verbal skills. Biting Policy:

Parents, we value you and your child(ren) and our number one priority is keepingthem safe. When it comes to a child getting hurt, we take all necessary precautionsand actions to make sure this doesn’t happen. If it does happen we treat the childwith love and kindness and make sure they are treated properly for their injury.

In trying to do our best to keep the kiddos safe we are implementing the followingpolicy:

If a child bites we will notify the parents on Procare. We will notify the parents ofthe child that was bitten and the child that was the biter. If your child is the biterwe will also be sending a picture of the bite. If your child did the biting we will makeall efforts to give you a detailed note on how it happened and why it happened. Ifthe parent feels the biting is due to teething, the parents need to let the classroomteachers know that their child is teething. This will help the staff to ensure we givethem their own teething ring throughout the day. From here we will be workingwith the child one on one and making sure they understand biting is never okayand teach them new ways to express the way they are feeling before a bitehappens. Some of the ways we will do this will be to implement some social storiesfor the children and cues on what to say. Staff will shadow the child who seems tobe biting and stay near to them to help them when they get in a mood where theymay bite and show them other ways to express themselves.

Getting the biting under control is our first priority, but if it continues to be an issuethen we will set up a time to meet with the parents and go over other ways to helpthe child to stop biting. If your child bites 3 times in one week we will be contactingyou to set up a time to meet within 48 hours. If your child bites and it has been 1-2times a week, but several weeks in a row we will then reach out and set up ameeting time within 48 hours. During these meetings we will share with the familysocial stories and cues and make sure we are using the same language at homeand at PAC2. This will help the child associate the two places with the same rules. Ifwe reach out to the parents, and there is no communication back, we will call you

Page 24: HASTINGS FAMILY YMCA & PAC2 Parent Handbook

or discuss this with you during pick up or drop off. If a parent refuses to meet withus then we will make the decision on what is best for the safety of the other kids.Failure to meet with us could result in your child not being allowed at PAC2.

If your child continues to bite, we will meet and discuss leveled play and how wecan try to effectively introduce the child into small groups of play at first and thenslowly introduce them into bigger groups and help them know how to play, and howto use their social skills when they do get frustrated.
