Dear Friends of Hashoo Foundation,
We are proud to share the progress we have made in the pursuit of development, through the tireless efforts of our
team. The year 2009-10 has be en about building and learning from past successes, so that all our projects achieve a
level of sustainability.
The highlights of the year have been the expansion in the scale of our services in our core thematic areas. Under
economic development, we managed to reach high numbers of producers and workers, through the expansion of ourhoney bee farming, dairy development and marble shine projects. We assisted in improving livelihoods of these
communities by increasing capacity and developing better value chains.
We were successful in providing state of the art support and rehabilitation services to people with disabilities through
our flagship project Umeed-e-Noor. We also managed to create civil society linkages as well as ma ss awareness
about the rights of people with disabilities under our special needs program.
We expanded our skills development program by increasing the scale of our professional trainings and are now
affiliated with the Pakistan training bureau. Provision of quality education through HF schools was maintained
throughout Pakistan.
Our social welfare relief and rehabilitation efforts were far and wide, from helping IDPs to giving on-going support to
the victims of terrorism (Sahara Fund) as well as the earthquake affected population.
With ongoing support from our donors and guidance from our Board of Directors, we feel that together, we can
achieve great things in the years ahead. The images and progress reported in this document is a testament to this
sentiment.
We would like to leave you with a me ssage of hope and pray for peace in the world.
We look forward to continuing our long journey together in the years ahead.

Dear Friends,
It is quite a rare honor for one to introduce an annual report that tries to capture the essence of another productive
year for the Hashoo Foundation. However, having come on board only in the last month of the year in question, it
would be totally inappropriate for one to la y any claim to the numerous achievements of the Foundation. These are in
fact, the results of combined efforts of all of the staff who one is privileged to have inherited, the leadership of one's
predecessor Dr. Imam Yar Baig and the strategic direction and guidance provided by the Chairperson, Sarah
Hashwani and the Board.
As the new Country Director, one is extremely encouraged by and in particular the dedication and commitment of HF's
staff, the willingness and cooperation of its s takeholders and beneficiaries and the guidance and unwavering support
of the Foundation's boards.
Staying true to our vision and mission, our economic development and skills development programs are now cross
cutting features in most of our interventions. We believe in working towards a society where communities are
empowered through economic opportunities which are created if an individual is trained in practical and marketable
skills. I trust you will find the annual report to be a useful document, one which reflects our approach and highlights the
progress the Foundation has been able to make in delivering hope and locally workable solutions to marginalized and
vulnerable communities. Sometimes it is not always possible to measure real achievements through mere facts and
figures and need to be gauged through some of the images. I t is often the emotive power of the images that best
reflect communities' feeling of being empowered. I hope the photos in the annual report help convey this.
Finally, on reading the report, you will no doubt reflect on both, our strengths and areas of further improvement. May I

Economic Development
Hashoo Foundation identified, mobilized and trained 257 new women bee
keepers in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Hashoo Foundation distributed 384 bee hives and p roduction kits to the trainees
/beneficiaries in Gilgit- Baltistan. The capacities of 295 household were enhanced in livestock management
through training implemented by .
Under the Expanded Dairy Development Project, reated
13650 animals against diseases.
Special Needs
114 people liv ing with disabilities are being trained in marketable sk ills at our
Umeed-e-Noor, Centre for Special Children.
3 Fun and Art fairs were organized to raise awareness about s pecial needs.
Skills Development and Education
Hasho o Foundation tra ined 2110 individuals in vocational and professional tra ining
at its Human Development Resource Centres.
Hashoo Foundation helped 200 individuals secure full time employment.
387 young females and males were given boarding facilities at our Youth
Development Centers situated in Gilgit, Chitral and Rawalpindi.
1583 students enrolled in 13 schools during the year (Male 66%, Female 34%).
Hashoo Foundation supported 95 deserving students through its scholarship
Program.
500 Hasho o Foundation scholars were gainfully employed during the reporting
period.
From 2004 2010 we have helped 1477 scholars in successfully se cur ing ful l
time employment.933 students were supported by Child Education Support Program during 2009-
2010.

Economic Development
Honey Bee Farming
The Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming Project Plan Bee-
was initiated to empower women in Pakistan by expanding employment
opportunities and generating a stable source of income through the sale of
high-quality honey. The project addresses the discrepancy between the incomeearned by male and female beekeepers by educating the women in
beekeeping and linking them to profitable markets. Furthermore, the project
improves the status of women in their communities, as they become more
integrated in the decision-making process within male-dominated societies.
The project is based on a system of social barter, designed to promote social
change. HF agrees to buy the women beekeepers' honey at market price and
successfully links them to the lucrative markets of 5-star hotels in Pakistan,
provided that the families agree to send their children to quality scho ols, have
regular health check-ups and improve nutrition at home. The impact has been a
two-fold change in the lives of the women in

Expanded Dairy Development Program
The Expanded Dairy Development Program was initiated after the 2005
earthquake to restore livelihoods of women headed families of Tehsil Balakot,
District Mansehra. With support of CWS-P/A- EED, Hashoo Foundation
distributed livestock and trained the community in livestock management and
dairy sector development. A model dairy farm and training center was
established in 2009 to demonstrate modern livestock raring techniques for the
local community.
The project also focused on improving local livestock breed, fodder and feed,
animal health, dairy product development, use of farm resources (biogas
production) and market development. In the future, this project aims to target
1500 households, by organizing the community into dairy business groups and
linking them to markets for the joint marketing of dairy products and purchase of
inputs and services.

organizations visited the model dairy farm.

Marble Shine Associates
Marble Shine Associates (MSA) is a unique income generating project of
Hashoo Foundation, that offers high quality floor polishing services to
commercial, government and private clients.
Operating since 1999, MSA works with 5-star hotel chains, p rivate hospitals
and governmental facilities, as well as commercial buildings. The project
employs and trains more than 70 staff. Excelling in the art of stone restoration
and obtaining the best quality of workmanship, MSA uses the latest technology
in its equipment and the finest diamond abrasives to restore the natural beauty
of stone. Our highly skilled and experienced staff ensures the efficacy.
The profits generated through the services provided by MSA contribute
towards the operating costs of Hashoo Foundation.
Highlights 2009-2010
70 staff were given training on improved marble polishing.
Income generation and employment opportunities were increased with
widespread marketing of MSA in the private sector, in particular, in
residential areas.
Plans have been made and are being executed to run MSA as a social
enterprise, with more emphasis on improving skills and increasing
employment.

Umeed-e-Noor
Umeed-e-Noor represents Hashoo Foundation's focus on people living with
disabilities that ha s been operational since 1996. The aim of this program is to
provide children with special needs, an enabling environment (including creating
greater awareness within the society) where their social and psychological
needs are met, so they can maximize their potential and gain confidence and
the skills necessary to become productive members of our society.
A purpose built new center has been constructed to cater to the twin cities of
Islamabad and Rawalpindi, where they are about 200,000 children with
special needs. Umeed-e-Noor (UEN) was established to integrate these
children (most of them either abandoned or hidden away) back into mainstream
society with dignity, and so far 1,200 children have benefitted from the quality
therapy, education and general support and guidance offered by UEN.
Highlights 2009-2010
14 trainees are being trained in marketable skills through our Skills Training
for Handicapped People project.
3 fun and art fairs visited by 2000 people were organized to raise
awareness on the rights and needs of people with disabilities.
Linkages with employers are being developed (e.g., Brightspyre, Telenor).
Currently, 21 boarder are being provided full time care.
Training on offer includes pottery making, tailoring & embroidery,
mobile repair, origami making, computer training and house keeping.
Efforts are underway to make UEN even more convenient for special children,
by refurbishing play rooms, outside spaces and computers as well as
equipment.
Teachers are undertaking refresher courses in special education.

State of the Art Physiotherapy
Sara comes to UEN for speech and physiotherapy five days a week because
her parents were highly satisfied with the treatment and services she was
receiving. Having regular physio and speech therapy, Saras parents decided to
shift from rural Mandi Bahauddin to urban Rawalpindi. Earlier, she visited UEN
twice a month for treatments and rehabilitation. UEN is proud that parents
have kept such faith and trust in its services, and hopes to build relationships by
taking on challenges and changing lives.

Human Development Resource Centers
Skills development is an integral part of Hashoo Foundation's core programs.
Focused on youth, the main aim of this program is to enhance the skills set of
individuals through vocational and professional training.
Vocational training (hotel management, English language, ICT, beautician,
mobile repair) enable individuals with limited skills to secure a job or earn a
steady income, while professional trainings (proposal writing, report writing,
monitoring and evaluation) hone the skills of professionals, increasing their
chances of progressing in their career paths.
The skills development program is implemented through our Human
Development Resource Centers (HDRCs) in Rawalpindi, Chitral and Gilgit. A job
placement cell is l ocated in HDRC Rawalpindi, and links trainees with potential
employers.

ACTED funded Integrated Emergency Assistance to Highly Vulnerable IDPs and Host Families project in KPK.
Ministry of Youth affairs approved PC- 1 for the skills training of 5000 youth across Pakistan.

Professional Skills Development
Hashoo Foundation's professional skills training program is s pecially designed to
enhance organizational capacity and ensure that organizational needs are met
effectively and efficiently. Hashoo Foundation caters to clients in the corporate,
development and government sectors of Pakistan.
HF offers interventions across all levels of the organizational hierarchy. Hashoo
Foundation's management training spans across a broad range of topics in the
organizational and management spectrum enabling organizations to intercept
and access international grade programs for various levels and type of staff.
With its proactive training approach, professionals have a lready been trained
by Hashoo Foundation and now posses enhanced skills and knowledge.

Youth Development Centers
Hashoo Foundation has established Youth Development Centers (YDCs) in
Rawalpindi, Gilgit and Chitral where young and eager students from poor
backgrounds are given low cost accommodation. Various educational
programs, focused on overall development, are implemented in these YDC's
that are fully equipped with multi level facilities and services including food,
laundry, computer/resource center, study center, life skills training, career
counseling , emergency medical assistance, exposure visits, monitoring of
residents by professionals and regular interactions with parents to share
residents' progress.
Employment and Placement Bureau
An employment and placement bureau has been established to facilitate thetrainees who are s eeking employment opp ortunities after completing relevanttraining. Counselors help the youth, especially new entrants, to develop theirconfidence so they overcome personal and professional obstacles and assist thetrainees to make informed decisions about their careers.
The objective of this bureau is to promote economic empowerment and humandevelopment by giving our trainees a head start, through one on one sessionsand seminars, so that their employment opportunities are enhanced. Thetrainees are also linked to the job market and pl aced in suitable employment,where they are set to pursue and long and s uccessful career.
The Employment and Placement Bureau works rigorously in developing linkageswith employers and promotes skilled youth. So far, 67% of our female traineesand 43% male trainees have s ecured employment through this facility.

Hashoo Foundation has established 13 primary schools across Pakistan. The
schools offer quality education and are a viable alternate in the absence of
public schools in these remote areas. The schools a re situated in the following

Its hard to believe that there is still no Government
school close to our village. The Hashoo Foundation school
is a true blessing for our family, as we can watch our kids

Scholarship Program
Hashoo Foundation initiated its scholarship Program in 2004. The program
supports young, talented and deserving students from remote rural areas, by
paying for their tuition fees. The potential Hashoo Foundation scholars of are
high achievers, but limited resources pose a threat to their progress. Thescholarship award committee of Hashoo Foundation critically reviews the socio-
economic status of high achieving students and identifies the most deserving
ones.
The further education of students is supported in a reputed educational
institution in a specialized program on the condition that they maintain an
excellent grade throughout their academic life. The s cholarship program is active
all over Pakistan and attracts maximum attention every year.
Highlights 2009-2010
Hashoo Foundation supported 95 deserving students through it scholarshipprogram during the reporting period.
Hashoo Foundation supports its scholars in various technical fields such as
engineering, medical, social sciences, business administration and natural
sciences.
70% of our scholars received Grade A in their educational programs
5 of the Hashoo Foundation scholars received further scholarships from
reputed Universities outside Pakistan.
500 of Hasho o Foundation scholars were gainfully employed.
From 2004 2010 we have helped 1477 scholars in successfully securing full
time employment.
Child Education Support Program (CESP)
CESP focuses on s upporting quality education at the primary level to the most
vulnerable communities by providing means (tuition fee, books and uniform) to
poor families and encouraging them to send their children to local schools.
Hashoo Foundation first identifies out of school children who are interested torejoin their schooling, and subsequently s elects the right school in the area for
them. So far, Hashoo Foundation's CESP is operational in District Ghizer (Gilgit
Baltistan) and District Chitral (KPK) and Rawalpindi.

Hashoo Foundation's emergency relief component targets vulnerable
communities, reeling from the a fter effects of natural or man-made disasters. The
intervention focuses on maternal and child healthcare. Hashoo Foundation
began its relief activities during the catastrophic earthquake in 2005, providing
relief to the earthquake affected victims through:
Establishment of a basic health unit in Talhatta, Balakot; andInitiating the Spinal Cord Injury Project for Pakistan Earthquake Rehabilitation
(SCIPPER)
The basic health unit in Talhatta proved to be extremely successful and in the
model was replicated by inaugurating
The Hashoo Medical Center in Gawadar, Balochistan in 2007; and
The Hassan Ali Hashwani Dispensary in Karachi in 2008
Basic health unit , I-12 Islamabad for Afghan refugee s in 2010
Hasho o Foundation a lso provided much needed relief to the IDPs of Swat by
running an eme rgency health unit for 9 months (June 2009 February 2010) in
Charsadda, KPK.
Highlights 2009-2010
Hashoo Foundation provided basic emergency relief to 78600 patients
(40% male and 60 % female).
We referred 3267 patients to tertia ry health care facilities.
Hashoo Foundation conducted 3 free medical camps providing 5576
patients with free consultation and medicines.
Hashoo Foundation created mass health awareness relating to the common
prevailing diseases in the community to more than 35000 community
members through our outreach programs.Through its SCIPPER program Hashoo Foundation continued its support of 33
spinal cord injury patients (earthquake affected community) by providing
them with m onthly assistance and rehabilitation services.

Social Welfare and Emergency Relief
Social Welfare
In the absence of state-sponsored social sa fety nets, vulnerable families and
individuals facing temporary hardships and/or unforeseen expenditures can be
easily thrown into an endless cycle of poverty. Initiated in 1999, the Social
Welfare Program offers medical, economic and educational assistance to
families that need limited and specific help. In the form of small grants and loans,
it covers for unforeseen hardships such as medical expenses, loss of job, or loss
of a family member, and enables families to overcome crises before they
exacerbate.
Sahara Fund
The Sahara Fund continues to support 55 affected families of the 2008
Islamabad Marriott blast and has des igned a 10 year plan to rehabilitate and
restore their lives economically.
Assistance to IDPs
The recent turmoil in Pakistan resulted in one of the largest internal migration of
this century, where over 1.5 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) face
desperate living conditions in makeshift camps that lack basic living facilities.
The Hashoo Foundation and Hashoo Group initially provided 5 truckloads of
relief goods for the IDPs. Hashoo Foundation also established an emergency
healt h unit in Palosa camp, Charsadda, staffed by a medical officer, a nurse
and medical technician and equipped with quality medicines. Hashoo
Foundation gave:
Medical services to 80 patients a day;
Educational assistance to 80 children in Hashoo Foundation school,Nowshera Kalan, KPK; and
Evening classes to another 75 children (books, teachers and stationery) in
Hashoo Foundation school, Rashakai,

Mr. Mubashir Ali, resident of
Okara, was associated with Pearl
Tours as receptionist. Unfortunately,
he was a victim of the Islamabad
Marriott Hotel bomb blast and lost
sight in both his eyes.
He was the only bread winner for
his family, as his father is retired from
Pakistan Army and is now physically
unable to earn a livelihood.
Upon assessing his case, he was
supported by the Sahara Fund and
began receiving financial assistancealong with special skills training that
will enable to become self
sustainable in the near future.

Texas Association of Partners in Education
(TAPE)Hashoo Foundation/Expectation Graduation Room Pilot Project was
chosen as a finalist for the 2010 Texas Association of Partners in
Education awards. The 2010 TAPE Outstanding Partnership awards
applications represented some of the most innovative partnerships in
TAPEs more than thirty-year history.
Hashoo Foundation was selected as a 2010 Texas Association of
Partners in Education TAPE Award Finalist and its "Expectation
Graduation Room Pilot Project" will be included in the 2010 edition of
"Soaring to New Heights in Education: Powerful Partnership Practices"; a
compilation of case studies of effective p artnerships/programs.
The project was submitted by Houston Independent School District
(HISD) Strategic Partnership Team.

"Our Friend Joey"
Our Friend Joey is a children's book that honors and celebrates children with
disabilities. We are ve ry excited Robert Poppy Lampkin has included Hashoo
Foundation's Umeed-e-Noor Center of Excellence for Special Children as
one of his causes for 2010. Robert is planning to travel to Pakistan topersonally deliver copies of the bo ok to the children of Umeed-e-Noor.
Our Friend Joey is available for sale in written and audio formats. It has
been translated into six languages (Spanish, French, Creole, Urdu, Chinese
and Vietnamese). Robert has committed to donate some of the p roceeds of
the book to Umeed-e-No or for one year. Thank you Robert!!

CLINTON GLOBAL INITIATIVE 2009
Women's Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming Project
Hashoo Foundation pa rticipated in the fifth annual meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) held in New York. The event
provided the Foundation with an opportunity to interact and exchange best practices with leaders in business, government,and the civil sector. Originally aiming to reach 50 women, in the span of two years, this Commitment has exceeded its target,
training and engaging 316 women in honey bee production with a direct impact on more than 1200 dependants.
Along with Women Empowerment through Honey Bee Farming (2007-2009), Hasho o Foundation is engaged in the direct
delivery of three additional CGI Commitments to Action, namely; Hotel Management and Life Skills Training Program (2008-
2009), Umeed-e-Noor Center of Excellence for Special Children (2006-2009), and Expectation Graduation Room Pilot
Project (2009). These projects are tremendously impacting and improving the lives of thousands of women, girls and their
families through skills training, economic development and micro-credit; providing support to former dropout students; education

Launch In New York
Hashoo Foundation, joined distinguished leaders of the
Pakistani-American community in the US and around the world
to support the American Pakistani Foundation (APF)'s
Inaugural Benefit last December in New York. The invitation
was made to Sadruddin Hashwani, Patron-in-Chief, Hashoo
Foundation, by Ambassador Nicholas Platt founding memberof the board of the (APF). APF is a non-profit organization
classified under section 501(c)(3) which has undertaken a
project to assist APF in its goals of providing emergency relief,
shelter, food, medical care, and schooling for the millions of
needy and vulnerable internally displaced individuals in
Pakistan's conflict-affected areas.

Interest-free Loans throughCredit Enterprise Development
Hashoo Foundation USA initiated the Credit and
Enterprise Development (CED) program, where the
Foundation facilitates and administers provision of small
loans to existing and new beekeepers to add another
dimension to its "Women Empowerment through Honey
Bee Farming" project - Plan Bee. These small loans are
enabling the women keepers to purchase more hives to
achieve economies of scale and expand the ir enterprise.
The initiative has been made possible in collaboration
with:
1. University of St. Thomas Micro Credit Program (UST
MCP);
2. Owl Microfinance (OMF) Rice University's
Microfinance Student Organization; and
3. Microfinance Initiative at the University of Houston
(MFI UH)
This initiative has helped disbursed $ 15,200 interest free
loans.

Soni
Soni, 44, resides in Danyore, Gilgit- Baltistan, and is a mother of 4 school -goingchildren. Her husband is jobless at the moment. To ensure that her family is securein the long run and all their basic requirements are met, she received honey beefarming training with one hive. Now she is optimistic that she can increase her
income and improve her familys standard of living.
Gul Suri
Gul Suri, 40, is a resident of Mominabad, Gilgit- Baltistan, and a mother of 4school-going children. Her husband earns very little as a seasonal laborer andthe family owns no land or permanent house. They are struggling to make endsmeet, and Gul Suri has put up a brave fight to contribute to secure the future ofher family, particularly their education. She wants them to have the educationthat her parents could never afford for her. With this progressive mindset, shepushed herself to get honey bee farming training and earn Rs. 8,000 ($ 100)from 2 hives (one provided by Hashoo Foundation and one she earned forherself). As a beneficiary of the Credit Enterprise Program, she now se es light atthe end of the tunnel.
Mahoot
Mahoot, 48, resides in Mominabad, Gilgit- Baltistan, and is a mother of 5school-going children; two of them are orphans whom she adopted. Mahootshusband recently underwent a knee ope ration which has hampered his parttime work as a peon in the famous Baltit fort. After receiving the honey beefarming training, Mahoot has started contributing to her large familyseducational and medical expenses. She feels extremely proud and hope s fulfillher dream of a better future with assistance of the Credit Enterprise Program.
Shurkat Bibi
Shukrat Bibi, 35, resident of Mominabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, is a mother of 4
school going children. Her husband is an unskilled laborer whose incomedepends on seasonal demand that varies on the harsh weather in this remote
village. Due to rising livings costs and reduced income, Shukrat Bibi found out
about Hashoo Foundations honey bee farming from her neighbor and decided
to take matters in her own hand. After attending the training she was provided
with one hive from which she earned enough to invest in one more.
In the next five years she wants to educate her family so they do not ever have to
face the harsh realities that Shukrat Bibi is confronted with. The Credit Enterprise
Program has made this possible.
