Presentation Notes
Here is a diagram I adapted from Nancy Duarte, one of the real leaders in presentation design. Anyone of us could have designed this diagram What’s important about this process is that four of the seven items are before any work creating the materials for your presentation. And that’s critical. Too often we move forward with a presentation without really thinking about it. We pull in slides from old decks or take material directly from the proposal without thinking about it.

But a good presentation tells a story high points and low points. The audience isn’t left to wonder what the main point is, because the storyteller highlights them. Highlight your “big ideas”. Why is your audience here? What do you want them to remember a week later?

When I getting a presentation ready, for whatever reason, I ask questions. A lot of questions Who is your audience? How much time do you have? What is the room like? What’s the big idea? What’s your goal? And on and on and on

My Overall Point

• A subpoint that I’ll read off the screen • Another subpoint that I’ll read off the screen • Yet another subpoint I’ll read off the screen (with you)

– A sub point that probably shouldn’t be on the screen, but I’ll read it anyway

– I hate sub-bullets • Almost as much as I hate sub-sub-bullets.

usually that’s what I talk about and we know that it takes a different set of skills. Why does design matter?

Design matters because it’s evidence of forethought and care. It says “I spent time on this.” Good design is evident. This applies to PowerPoint too. If a presentation is well designed, people notice. Even if they don’t know what actually makes it well-designed So what are some good basic design principles we can apply to our slides? << Ask audience >>

Less is more (really)

Presenter
Presentation Notes
No…. Really. This is my guiding principle. Only as much text as necessary, one idea per slide, simple graphics. Brevity is at the center of each, and most presentations would benefit with a healthy dose of brevity. And “less is more” is probably obvious to many of you, so much so that it’s cliché (and cliché is something you should avoid), but it can’t be said enough. Simpler graphics, less text, is almost always better. And though it’s a recognized truth, it’s consistently violated. You should question everything that’s on each slide. If it isn’t necessary for the idea you’re presenting, then it shouldn’t be there.
Page 37: HARVESTING SECOND-TO-NONE PROPOSALS …...HARVESTING SECOND-TO-NONE PROPOSALS SYMPOSIUM October 2-3, 2013 Feel free to take notes, but you should know there is a leave behind I’ll

HARVESTING SECOND-TO-NONE PROPOSALS SYMPOSIUM October 2-3, 2013

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This is another extreme example of clutter (and too much). So much is splattered onto this slide that it’s hard to take in its full meaning. One idea per slide

Don’t build slides to read

Presenter
Presentation Notes
If you’re planning to read your slides or just paraphrase the written words, you are doing it wrong. As some of you have noticed, I’m expecting you to read these slides. But I’m expecting you can read these slides at a glance rather than as a left to right exercise that will draw your attention away from me (where your attention belongs).

No accidents This is very important, because it’s one that most people don’t think about much. Accidents are lapses in attention to detail.

Simplify Clarify Order

Presenter
Presentation Notes
When editing slides, we will always strive to do three things: Simplify – Remove unnecessary items so you can leave room for your ideas Clarify – Make your important ideas evident to your audience Order – Make sure that everything on the slide is precisely where you want it to me. Things like consistent alignment, colors, fonts, all matter.

A good example of this kind of review is this graphic. It was given to me by a consultant who actually used it a few times with clients. It’s not good for a lot of reasons. It’s scattered and the graphics are crude and random. But there was something else I couldn’t put my finger on. I showed it to my wife and she said, “so are we flushing those things down the toilet?” When I shared this with the consultant, he immediately pulled the slide from his library and accepted my help.
