Introduction

Harvest Moon Grand Bazaar is the newest DS game in the Harvest Moon series. With two separate game files, you can play either as a Boy or a Girl or asboth by using both files.

Your Character lives in Zephyr Town, a village that is centred on wind power, with a number of Windmills. Instead of shipping the goods you produce, youwill sell them at the local Bazaar on Bazaar Day, an Event that occurs on aweekly basis. Goods can be sold to any shop in the village as well, includingthe Cafe, but you will be required to meet specific sales goals at the weeklybazaar. This means, in effect, that any items you sell outside the Bazaarwill detract from your potential bazaar sales.

You will have a Kitchen at the very start of the game. Recipes can be obtainedthrough trial-and-error or by purchasing a Dish from the local Cafe. Any foodpurchased from the Cafe will be received as an actual item that you can sell, consume or give as a gift to another Character.

Although you arrive in Zephyr Town on 1 Spring, you will not be able to leaveyour house after the Mayor gives you the basic tour and time will not run. You can explore your House after he leaves but then have to save your game andgo to bed.

The game effectively begins on 2 Spring, therefore, in time-honoured HarvestMoon fashion. Felix will arrive at 6.00 a.m. with gifts of a Hoe and WateringCan, six Turnip Seeds and six bags of Fertiliser.

Your first tasks will be to farm, planting Turnip Seeds and fertilising themdaily if possible in order to raise their quality (and value) as well asforaging for items throughout the town. Turnip Seeds and Fertiliser can bepurchased from Raul at his shop.

Items that can be collected from the ground include wild Flowers such asMoondrop, Toy Flower and Magic Blue Flower as well as herbs such as Chamomileand Mint. You can collect insects using your bare hands, even when they areflying insects such as Butterflies. You will not need a net.

Shitake Mushrooms will appear randomly even during Spring, although they tendto appear more frequently after it has rained on the previous day. You canmake these into Steamed Mushrooms in your Kitchen without any prior Recipe orany Utensils.

Every item has a specific Quality and Freshness rating. You can store items topreserve those ratings but as they 'go bad', they will lose some of theirvalue. Incidentally, other Characters will not accept items that are notfresh as Gifts!

Coins can be found on the ground. You will see a little sparkle on the groundwhere any Coin is hidden. They are of various denominations with differentvalues. At the very beginning of the game, you can find the following:

Small Coin: 50G A coin of simple design. Combine with metals to make a more valuable coin.

Bronze Coin: 150G Maybe it can be used for payment somewhere...

Silver Coin: 300G Maybe it can be used for payment somewhere...

Gold Coin: 450G Maybe it can be used for payment somewhere...

All of these Coins can be sold initially either at a local Shop or from yourBazaar Stall.

You can dive into the River and items will be caught randomly in your clothingwhen you reach the shore. This action will require Stamina, however and youneed to be careful not to exhaust yourself completely. Items that can becaught in your clothing include: Empty Can, Branch, Small Coin, Sea Urchin,Gold Ore.

From the very start of the game, you will be able to purchase Turnip Seeds andFertiliser from the local market. When you attend the first Bazaar, you willbe able to purchase Potato Seeds and Cabbage Seeds from his stall there.

The prices of these Spring Seeds are:

Turnip Seeds: 120G Can harvest 4-5 days after plantiing. Can only be harvested once.

Potato Seeds: 170G Spring Crop. Can harvest 6-8 days after planting. Can only be harvestedonce.

Cabbage Seeds: 420GSpring crop. Can harvest 11-15 days after planting. Can only be harvestedonce.

When the Bazaar has been expanded for the first time, Chen will begin to sellnew types of Crop Seeds for each growing Season and other Items. Sherry willsell Tree Seeds.

Unlocking New Options

Every Harvest Moon game requires patience where new options are concerned. InGrand Bazaar, many of the new options that are unlocked have date requirementsrather than progress requirements.

For example, the first Windmill will be unlocked on or near 24 Spring whenIsaac visits your house at 6.00 a.m.

The actual Animals sold at the weekly Bazaar at Enrique's Stall are randomlychosen. I have found Pigs and Chicks for sale in some files and Cows andChicks for sale in another even in the first week. Adult Animals will be soldonly after you purchase the 'young' variety of the Animal from Enrique.

Although the Sickle, Hammer and Axe will appear at Mayor Felix's Stall at theBazaar in successive order, you will be given your first Fishing Rod by theMayor on 1 Summer.

Many new options will be unlocked with Bazaar expansions, including theappearance of Chen and Gannon from Sunny Island/Sunshine Islands. More Seeds,Cookware and the Big Bed, as well as ingredients such as Oil and Rice can beobtained only when the Bazaar has been expanded for the first time. LaterBazaar expansions bring new options as well. All Bazaar expansions are basedon your Character's total sales, so this is one area where progress willdetermine your ability to purchase specific items.

Where other important items are concerned, you must have patience. Althoughyour first Short Fishing Rod is a gift, the Medium Fishing Rod will appear atFelix's Stall at the Bazaar only in the second Year. The Long Fishing Rodwill not appear at his Stall until the fourth Year.

Even Courtship to some extent is time-specific in terms of meeting allCharacters Eligible for Marriage. Amir will be introduced on 3 Winter byMayor Felix. You cannot meet Emiko until the second year, when she takespossession of the shrine behind the Waterfall.

In some ways, Grand Bazaar is less complicated than some of the other HarvestMoon games because new options are unlocked at specific times. In other ways, especially where the extraordinary choice of Crops, Fruits and Recipes areconcerned, it is a game that deserves a player's patience and determination asyou will not be able to glimpse more than hints of what the future holds ifyou do not continue to play through the Seasons.

Your Farmhouse

Mayor Felix will give you a tour of your Farm and Farmhouse:

Storage Room

Felix: Use the storage room to hold items when your bage is full! Fruists, milk and other perishable items will last longer in storrage as well! TheControl Pad moves the cursor, and the A Button selects. Just like your bag! If you want to leave storage, just press the B Button! Go ahead, try it!

Storage becomes significant in a game where Freshness determines the value ofitems and when you need to save your items to sell them at the weekly Bazaar. Unfortunately, storage space is rather limited at the start of the game withonly 12 slots for items in the Storage Room. Items can be stacked, but onlywhen they have the same Quality and Freshness.

Animal Feed must occupy a slot in the Storage Room in order to be accessiblefrom the Barn area. The Barn area, incidentally, is attached to the Farmhouseand can be accessed through a door in the eastern wall. The door that leadsto the Storage Room is south of the Bed, but you can access your Storage spacewhen you are outside by using a door on the left side of the house.

Your Rucksack or Bag has 36 Slots. There is no differentiation between Toolsand other Items. You will find everything in the Bag. Use the X Button toaccess the Bag, and then use the Directional Control Pad to choose an Item. There is virtually no Touchscreen or Stylus use in Grand Bazaar. If you wishto equip or hold an Item, find it using the directional Control Pad, then usethe 'A' Button to remove it from the Bag. By using the Directional ControlPad, you can choose its final destination from three:

EquipCharmHold

Tools are equipped. Items for the most part are 'Held'. To place an item inyour Bag, or to return an item that you are holding to your Bag, use the YButton.

The Basket

Felix will continue his Tutorial with a description of your Basket:

Felix: And that's about everything you need to know! Ah! There is one otherthing that I'd like to show you!

This basket here is very useful! Anything you put in here is automaticallysent to storage! Convenient, No? Just toss an item into the basket, andit'll be sent to storage! It's that simple! But if your stroage is full, youcan't add items! You can also pick the basket up and move it, so it's sure tobe useful!

With only 12 Slots in the Storage Room, it is difficult to keep any spacevacant for items to be sent directly to it via the Basket early in the game. Once you expand your Storage Room, the Basket may become more useful.

Saving your Game and Sleeping

Felix will give you instructions on how to go to sleep at night. This issignificant in that the only time you are able to save your game in GrandBazaar is at the moment of going to bed. When you stand next to your bed topress 'B', you will see the following options:

Save and go to bed.Go to bed without saving.Don't go to bed yet.

Felix will inform you:

Felix: Just stand next to your bed and press the B Button when you want to goto sleep! If you'd like, check out the bookshelf or the kitchen before you goto bed! Also, your calendar shows you when festivals will be taking place! Take a look! Well, I'll be on my way, then! Goodnight, Freya!

The Vase

When Felix gives you a tour of your house, he will show you an empty vase eastof the front door:

Felix: This is a vase. You can fill it with any flowers you have. However, the flowers will wilt after a few days, so you'll need to replace theml

In other Harvest Moon games, the presence of Flowers in a Vase in your houseactually affected your Energy levels in a positive way. In Grand Bazaar, ifyour Character presses 'B' in front of the Vase when it is filled with freshFlowers, he/she will respond 'with music' and about 1/10th of your Stamina Barwill be restored. As with the Bath and Restroom, this Effect can begenerated only once in the course of any day.

Once the flower Vase is filled, you will not be able to change the Flowersuntil they lose their freshness entirely. You then will be able to replacethem with fresh Flowers.

Your Kitchen

Kitchen Tutorial: This is the kitchen. Use it when you want to cook. Cookwithout recipe allows you to freely choose what ingredients to cook with. However, it might not turn out well if the mix is bad. Cook from recipeautomatically picks the ingredients for you. When a dish is a success, youcan write down the recipe. However, you can customise by adding moreingredients to the original recipe. If the customisation is successful, youcan revise the recipe. You can also get recipes by buying dishes from thecafe in town.

The menu options are:

Cook from RecipeCook without RecipeQuit

You should be able to cook successfully as soon as you have an ingredient for asingle-ingredient Recipe. The first items you may obtain are a Turnip and aShitake Mushroom. You can make Turnip Salad with the Turnip and SteamedMushrooms with the Shitake. The value of these Cooked Dishes is significantlyhigher than the raw ingredients used to make them.

If you purchase a Chick at the first Weekly Bazaar, it will become an Adultcapable of laying one egg each day in a week. You then can make:

Boiled Egg: Ingredients: Egg

Egg Custard: Ingredients: Egg + Shitake

An Egg Custard sells for 495G ordinarily which means that you should be able toobtain almost 1000G for one at your Stall at the Bazaar.

Note that although most Recipes require no additional Utensils, there areCooked Dishes that cannot be made successfully unless you have a Pot or FryingPan. The Pot and Frying Pan will be sold at the Cookware Stall when theBazaar is expanded for the first time. Each will cost 10,000G

It is when Cooking that you will use the Touchscreen in Grand Bazaar. ForIngredients, there are two tabs below the slots in which Items that can becooked appear. The first is the Rucksack and the second is your Storage Room. You therefore need not place an ingredient in your Rucksack physically inorder to be able to use it in the Kitchen. You simply need to change tabs tolocate the Items that are in Storage.

Similarly, you need not take Items physically to the Windmills in order toprocess them but can access them through the Menu that appears when you choosethe option to use the Windmill.

Your Bookshelf

In the main room, to the right of the Bed:

Felix: This is the bookshelf. You can view your assets here. You can checkyour farm's status, your balance, yearly income and your expenses. You canalso see what you have collected and your relationship with others. There's alot of useful information in it, so be sure to look at it often.

Recipes you have obtained can be found in your Assets as well as in yourKitchen. There is a Characters' Page in your Assets Menu that gives you basicinformation about every Character, including general likes and dislikes andcurrent heart level.

Assets Menu

Completing various collections is one of the subsidiary goals in any HarvestMoon or Rune Factory game. You will find records of your Recipes as well asthe varieties of Fish and Insects you have caught in your Assets Menu.

An icon of a wicker cage denotes the page where both Insects and Fish arelisted. This is one of the few situations where you need to use theTouchscreen to touch either the fish or the insects tab on the right of thelower screen to access the Lists.

You will have a Skill Level and Title for catching 'Critters' and Fish in GrandBazaar as well as your general Farming Title.

Wall Calendar

The Calendar on your Wall gives you access to five Seasons if you use the RButton. In the first Spring, therefore, you will be able to consult all fourSeasons in the first Year as well as Spring of the 2nd Year. Dates that aremarked include all Festivals, Birthdays and Bazaar Days.

Bathroom and Restroom

Your Farmhouse will be equipped both with a Bathroom and a Restroom at the verystart of the game. Both recover energy but the Bathroom restores more Energythan the Restroom. They appear to take only 5 minutes of your time, but eachcan be used only once in the course of any day.

Passage of Time in Grand Bazaar

Unlike many Harvest Moon games, entering a building will not halt the passageof time. Be careful not to forget this if you are a veteran player!

If you do forget, time will continue to pass until 5.00 a.m. at which pointyour Character will collapse on the floor with the thought: I can't go on...I think... I'm passing out.

This will occur even with a full Energy Bar. It will not result in a reductionof energy in the morning when you leap out of bed at 6.00 a.m., however.

Random Results

As with many Harvest Moon and Rune Factory games, some options are loaded intothe game randomly. Items that can be foraged are loaded randomly, which meansthat you can change the configuration by reloading your game. If you need aspecific item and do not have it in storage, provided always that it is anitem that can be found in the current season, you may be able to find it ifyou reload your game.

The Animals that will be offered by Enrique are chosen randomly by the game, although only Young Animals of any type will appear until you have purchasedat least one Animal of that variety. After that, the Adult Animal of thattype will appear at his Stall.

Another random result is the Menu at Joan's Cafe and her Stall at the Bazaar. Although you can create Cooked Dishes and obtain the Recipes by trial anderror, if you are looking for specific cooked Dishes to give as Gifts toindividuals before you have the ingredients required to make them, you canreload your game to change Joan's Menu.

Weather is another random result, but I am not certain how far in advance it isset. I believe it is set only on the prior day, but I need to confirm this. So far, in the first couple of seasons I have not found any one who predictsthe Weather in Zephyr Town.

One more random result exists with respect to the Ore Stones found in theriver. The result is loaded into the game at the moment that you hit the OreStone with your hammer. It is advisable, therefore, to wait until 6.00 a.m.to smash any Ore Stones in your possession. If the item contains nothing butScrap Metal, you can reload your game and try again without wasting any energyor time.

Local Shops and Businesses

When you first arrive at Zephyr Village, there will be three local businesses. These are Raul's Shop, Joan's Cafe and the local Hotel. You can buy or sellitems either at the Cafe or at Raul's Shop if you need money but as previouslyindicated, it is best to save as many items as possible for your Stall at theweekly Bazaar. Bazaars are held by default on Saturdays but if a Festival orBirthday occurs on any Saturday, the Bazaar usually will be held on Sundayinstead. As previously indicated, the Calendar on your Wall will display allFestivals, Birthdays and Bazaar Days for five Seasons.

Raul's Shop

Raul's ShopOpen 7.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m.Closed Fridays and Bazaar Days

At the start of the first Spring, Raul will sell only Turnip Seeds andFertiliser. You can sell any items to him if you wish, although it is bestalways to save as many items as possible for your Stall at the Bazaar.

As you make progress, items will be added to his Menu. When you purchase aChick, for example, he will begin to sell Chicken Feed as well as AnimalMedicine. When you purchase a Cow or Sheep, he will sell Fodder. When youhave purchased your first Pet, he will begin to sell Pet Food as well.

Turnip Seeds: 120G Can harvest 4-5 days after plantiing. Can only be harvested once.

Fertiliser: 10G

Animal Medicine: 500G Use it on a sick animal to cure them.

Chicken Feed: 80G Feed for chickens. Use it to feed them when they can't go outside.

Fodder: 70G Feed for cows and sheep. For when they can't graze.

Pet Food: 150G Food for cats and dogs. Use it in the trough in the corner of your room.

Summer Seeds

On the last day of Spring, you will find only Spring Seeds at the shop, but onthe first day of Summer in the first year, the Turnip Seeds will be replacedwith:

Radish Seeds: 200G Summer Crop. Can harvest 4-5 Days after planting. Can only be harvestedonce.

On the first day of Autumn, the Radish Seeds will be replaced with:

Eggplant: 200G Fall Crop. Can harvest 8-10 Days after planting. Can reharvest in 4 Days.

In the Winter Season, the only farming item sold by Raul will be Fertiliser. All other Seeds for any Season will be found at the Bazaar.

Zephyr Cafe

Zephyr CafeOpen 10.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m.Closed Thursday and Bazaar Days

At the Zephyr Cafe in the first couple of weeks in Spring, you probably willfind only two Dishes on the Menu. These are chosen randomly. By purchasingany Cooked Dish for the first time, you will 'learn' the Recipe from Joan andfind it in your Cookbook both in your Kitchen and in the Assets Menu in yourBookshelf. The Cooked Dishes found at Joan's Stall at the Bazaar are chosenrandomly as well, but may be different from those you have found at the Cafe. It always is a good idea to look at her Menu on a daily basis, both at theCafe and at the weekly Bazaar.

Early Dishes that appear randomly on Joan's Menu both at the Cafe and theBazaar include: Rice Ball, Cabbage Rolls, Fish Paste, Fried Rice Ball,Yakisoba, Pancake, Donut, Pudding, Straight Tea, Milk Tea, Chocolate Cookiesand Chocolate Cake. You will not be able to make many of these Dishes in yourKitchen in the first Spring.

The prices of Cooked Dishes sold by Joan is included in the Kitchen RecipeSection of this Guide.

Note that all Joan's Dishes tend to be only 1/2 Star in quality in the firstyear, while Dishes made in your Kitchen usually will have far higher rank.

Spring Harmony Day occurs on 14 Spring in Grand Bazaar and neither Chocolatesnor plain Cookies are recognised as a Spring Harmony Gift by any EligibleGirls if your Character is male. Joan usually sells both Chocolate Cookiesand Chocolate Cake on that day, however, so if you wish to give Spring HarmonyDay Gifts to all the Girls in the first Spring, save a little money and buyfour portions of Chocolate Cookies from Joan.

Chocolate Cookies are less expensive than Chocolate Cake but have equal 'value'as far as Harmony Day Gifts are concerned. Ironically, if your Character is aGirl, Eligible Bachelors at lower Heart Levels will give you plain Cookiesinstead of Chocolate Cookies as a Festival offering but your own Character ifa Boy is restricted to Chocolate Cookies or Chocolate Cake.

Whenever you purchase a Cooked Dish from Joan, she will teach you the Recipefor the Dish and it will be added automatically to your Cookbook. The problemhere is that Recipes seldom include descriptions of the Utensils required tomake them although you will see a little prompt at the top of the screen tothe effect that you do not own the necessary Cookware when you have chosen allingredients for a Cooked Dish that requires a Utensil and do not possess thatUtensil. Although many Recipes require no special Cookware, others do. Ifyou wonder why you cannot make Straight Tea from the Straight Tea tin broughtup from the River, it is because all Teas must be made in a Pot. Herb Saladneeds to be made in a Pot as well. A Boiled Egg, on the other hand, can bemade without any special Utensils. It is not based on any simple logic andindeed, there are cases, such as the Recipe for Fried Eggs, where the writtendescription speaks of frying pans when no such Cookware is required. TheUtensils required to prepare any Dish are included in the Kitchen Recipessection of this Guide as well as my special Grand Bazaar Cookbook RecipesGuide.

Hotel

HotelOpen 6.00 a.m. - 11.00 p.m. Open every day!

The Hotel is the location where Stuart, Ethel and Daisy live. On Wednesdays,Sherry substitutes for Daisy and can be found performing the maid's servicesin the lobby.

In the first Winter, Amir will appear in Zephyr Town and will stay in one ofthe Guest Rooms on the upper floor of the Hotel. On Bazaar Days, you willfind the children of customers playing in the lobby, although they will not beadded to the List of Characters in your Farm Assets Menu.

The Hotel is used mainly for Multiplayer Mode when all visitors as well as thehost, will meet there at the start of the game and stay there each nightduring the session.

Foraging

In the first Spring, you can find a wide variety of items throughout theVillage. These can be sold either at any local shop or from your Stall at theweekly Bazaar. They can be given as Gifts and some can be used as ingredientsin Cooked Dishes. There are 'drop spots' where you will find items again andagain. One is in the northwest corner of the Meadow above your Farmhouse.

Items that you can find in Spring include Moondrop, Toy Flower, Chamomile,Mint, Walnuts, Shitake, Honeycomb, Weeds, Branches, Rocks, insects of variousvarieties, including Butterflies and Coins of different types.

Using the 'A' Button to leap will allow you to reach areas that areinaccessible by walking. You can leap from a barrel to gain height. In somecases, you will be able to find a new shortcut by leaping.

Insects can be caught with the bare hands by using the 'B' Button, even whenthey are flying insects such as Butterflies. As soon as you catch any insect, you will be given a choice as to whether you wish to keep it or release it. Insects that you keep will be given little wicker cages. A few Characters arehappy to receive an Insect as a Gift. Kevin, in particular, adores Insects ofall types.

Some of the items that you find when foraging will be available throughout theyear, but others are seasonal in nature. Walnuts and Honeycomb can be foundyear-round as can Branches, Rocks and Weeds.

If you leap into the river, you may find an Item, but your will lose Stamina aswell in the effort. Items that are found in the River throughout the yearinclude Sea Urchins, Small Coins, Ore Stones, Gold Ore, Straight Tea Tins,Branches and Empty Can.

If you find an Item in the water, an Exclamation Point will appear over yourCharacter's head with a prompt:

Huh? Something caught in your clothes when you fell in the water.

The items that are seasonal are as follows:

Winter Foraging

Winter is quite different from other seasons in most Harvest Moon games. Theground will be frozen, allowing you to grow no Crops on your field. If youhave a Greenhouse, you can grow Crops from any Season using the correspondingseasonal Sun but otherwise, you will be required to take a break from farminguntil the Spring thaw.

The River will be frozen but wherever you see cracks in the ice, you can useyour Hammer to smash the ice. A fairly large hole will appear, allowing youto dive for items or fish.

The variety of Fish that can be caught with your basic Fishing Rod only duringWinter is Smelt. Many of the Fish that you can catch in Winter can be caughtin the Spring season as well, but in the 2nd Spring, you will be able topurchase the Medium Fishing Rod from Felix at the Bazaar. The Fishing sectionof the Guide includes descriptions of all varieties of Fish with seasonalinformation.

Iin Winter, you can find Snowballs on the ground. They contain random items, including Ore Stones, Curry Dumplings and Flowers from every Season.

Snowball: Throw it and you might find something inside.

Often, however, a Snowball will contain nothing at all. It may containanother Snowball and it may contain Weeds, Rocks and Branches as well.

In Winter, a multitude of Grasshoppers can be found on the ground on everyscreen. Ore Stones and Coins can be found throughout the Map as well on theground. Mint and Lavender can be found throughout the Map in Winter.

Throughout the year, a little sparkle on the ground denotes the presence of aCoin, but in Winter, you will see other sparkles as well that are nothing butice reflecting the light. You still will be able to find Coins but not allsparkles in Winter denote hidden treasure!

Festivals

Festivals are an important aspect of your life in Zephyr Town and in manycases, offer an opportunity to raise friendship Levels.

There are both community Festivals and Romantic Festivals in Grand Bazaar. Romantic Festivals tend to be the traditional Harvest Moon Festivals, including Spring and Winter Harmony Day Festivals and the Starry NightFestival.

In some Harvest Moon or Rune Factory games, the Harmony Day Festivals, sometimes known as the Thanksgiving Festivals, can be occasions forgift-giving to ALL members of the opposite gender and therefore can beconsidered community Festivals as well as Romantic Festivals. This is not thecase in Grand Bazaar. Only members of the opposite gender will recognise aspecific Gift as a Harmony Day Gift on the appointed date. If you give theGift to a Character who is not Eligible for Marriage, he/she will make thesame Response to that Item as on any other Day. Moreover, other Characterswill not speak of the Harmony Day Festival at all.

The only other Character who will recognise the date, albeit not with dialogue,is Joan, who will sell Chocolate Cookies and Chocolate Cake on both the SpringHarmony Festival and Winter Harmony Festival. Furthermore, it is important torealise that tese are the ONLY Items that are recognised as Harmony Day Giftsin Grand Bazaar. You cannot give Chocolate or regular Cookies/Cake to anEligible Girl/Bachelor and expect these Gifts to be recognised as Harmony DayGifts as you can in other Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games.

It is interesting to note that other Characters can give ordinary Cookies/Cakein their Visits on the Spring or Winter Harmony Day Festival! OrdinaryCookies represent a low Heart Level, however, and as Heart Levels increase, will be replaced with Chocolate Cookies or Chocolate Cake.

Community Festivals

In many Harvest Moon/Rune Factory games, community Festivals will have a numberof different venues. In Grand Bazaar, all Community Festivals as well as allAnnouncement Events occur at the Town Square.

There are two different varieties of Community Festival in Grand Bazaar. Thefirst is a Community Feast of some kind where the entire Community will enjoya special Dish. The Tea Party and Wine Festivals are examples of this. Forthese Festivals, your Character is expected to bring the special Dish/Drink,but in the first Year, Felix will deliver this to your farmhouse at 6.00 a.m.a few days prior to the Festival.

If you are clever, you can substitute a different Item for the actual Festival. For the Tea Party, instead of using the Spring Tea Leaves he gives to you,you could use Straight Tea to brew some Tea in your Kitchen as yourcontribution. For the Wine Festival in the first Year, you could make Chichawith Potato and Yogurt or Tomato Wine using the Red Wine with a Tomato. Theonly problem with the Wine substitution is that fermentation in these cases isa slow process, even if you speed the Windmill by blowing into the Microphone. You should make the substitution drink before Felix delivers the Red Wine inorder to have it ready in time for the Wine Festival.

Although the Community Feast Festivals are not Contests, you will receive areward in the form of a special Item when you participate in the Event. Thedefault Item for the Tea Party is Apple Pie, but if you contribute a differentsort of Tea, you will receive a different Item at the end of the Festival.

The second type of community Festival is a Contest. There are Animal Contestsof various sorts as well as the two-part Cooking Contest.

A new activity will be introduced in Winter in the form of Snowboarding. Felixshould appear at 6.00 a.m. on the second day of Winter to give you a Snowboardand announce the completion of the Course. It is the winding track thatbegins at the Hot Spring on the Hotel Screen. He then will urge you topractice for the upcoming Tournament on 20 Winter. You now will be able tofind a Skateboard for sale for use in other Seasons at the Weekly Bazaar

Spring Festivals

In Spring, you will experience the Flower Festival, the first Spring HarmonyDay and the Tea Party on 30 Spring. Both are community Festivals. The FlowerFestival ostensibly is a Contest, but there is no reward apart fromFriendship.

The Flower Festival is a four-day affair. You should try to give one Flowereach day to every Character if possible. If it rains, you may behard-pressed to replenish your stock of Flowers, but although the individualwho gives the most Flowers will be announced to be the 'winner' at the end ofthe Festival, the real purpose of this Festival is to raise Heart Levels. Even individuals who ordinarily do not like Flowers or are indifferent to themwill accept them happily during the Flower Festival.

The Spring Harmony Day is the Harvest Moon equivalent of St. Valentine's Daybut is gender-specific. Although the description of the Festival on theCalendar states that it is the day when Boys give Chocolate to Girls, onlyChocolate Cookies will be recognised as a Harmony Day Gift by any Girl inGrand Bazaar.. If your Character is a Boy, you should give Chocolate Cookiesto all the Eligible Girls. If your Character is a Girl, you will receiveVisits from each of the Eligible Boys according to a set schedule. In orderto experience the Visit, you need to re-enter your House during the hourdesignated for the Visit. Even Bachelors at Black Heart Level will giveCookies in the first Spring.

The Tea Party on 30 Spring is reminiscent of the Sprites' Spring Tea Party inolder Harvest Moon games. Here, however, it is your Character who suppliesthe Tea for the entire Village. In the first Spring, you will receive a visitfrom Mayor Felix a few days prior to the Event. He will provide you withSpring Tea Leaves. You can give them to him at noon on the day of theFestival. If you wish, however, you can transform them into Green Tea byusing the Windmill. Note that tins of Straight Tea can be found by divinginto the River and one can be given to Felix as your contribution to the TeaParty instead of the Spring Tea Leaves.

After you have been thanked for providing the Tea for the Festival, Joan willgive you a piece of Apple Pie. You can use it as a Gift, consume it or sellit at your Stall at the next Bazaar.

Apple Pie (2 1/2 Stars): A classic pie. Slightly sour apples are best.

As indicated in the section on Community Festivals, supplying a different typeof Tea will result in a different Reward.

There are a number of Festivals throughout the Year that follow this pattern. The next community feast is the Wine Festival. In the first year, Felix willsupply you with Red Wine to share with the village. If you attend and givehim Red Wine, Claude afterwards will give you Good Herb Cheese to take home. A different variety of Wine will result in a different Reward.

Romantic Festivals

Spring Harmony Day

The Harmony Day Festivals are gender-specific. If your Character is a Boy, youwill be expected to give Chocolate Cookies or Chocolate Cake on the occasionof the Spring Harmony Day Festival. In the first Spring, you will be able topurchase either or both from Joan. They both elicit the same Response so itis better, in the interests of saving money, to purchase the ChocolateCookies.

If your Character is a Girl, you will receive scheduled Visits from each of theEligible Bachelors when you re-enter your farmhouse at specific hours in themorning. In the first Spring before Amir arrives in Zephyr Town, the lastvisitor will arrive between 11.00 a.m. and 11.59 a.m. If you do not enteryour Farmhouse at each of the specified hours, you will miss the Visit.

Spring Harmony Day as a Boy

When you awaken: Today is Harmony Day! Give a chocolaty treat to that specialsome one!Although the items on Joan's menu usually are random, on Harmony Day in thefile where my Character was a Boy, her menu featured both Chocolate Cookiesand Chocolate Cake.

Chocolate Cookies: 600G Cookies with chocolate. Irresistible.

Their Responses will be as follows:

Sherry: A Harmony Day gift? Thank you! I hope you're looking forward towinter's Harmony Day!

Freya: Oh, for Harmony Day? Thank you, Freyr. You're sweet. (red heart)

Antoinette: Huh. A Harmony Day present? Uh... thanks.

Daisy: Yay! (red heart) A Harmony Day gift! Thank you! You're so sweet!

Once Emiko appears, she will be eligible for a Harmony Day Gift as well.

Spring Harmony Day as a Girl

If your Character is a Girl, you will receive the following Visits:

If your Character is a Girl, you should receive Cookies from every Bachelor, even in the first Spring when they probably remain at Black Heart Level. Athigh Levels, I expect the Bachelors give Chocolate Cookies instead. This wasthe case in Island of Happiness and Sunshine Islands.

The Cookies will be delivered by each Bachelor according to a set schedule asfollows:

8.00 a.m.: Visit from Ivan 9.00 a.m. Visit from Dirk 10.00 a.m. Visit from Lloyd 11.00 a.m. Visit from Angelo

Re-enter your Farmhouse at these times to trigger the Visit Event for each ofthe Bachelors.

Once Amir arrives in Zephyr Town, his visit will be scheduled for noon.

The Events are as follows:

Today is Harmony Day! Will you get a present?

Harmony Day:

8.00 a.m.:

??? Freyja, do you have a minute?Me: ?Ivan: Freia, It's Harmony Day today. I brought this gift for you.

He gives me Cookies.

Ivan: Well, I should go. Take care.

At 9.00 a.m., I re-enter the House to experience the next Event:

??? You have a minute, Freia?

Me: ?

Dirk: Freyja, it's Harmony Day. (laughing) So here's a present from me toyou!

He gives me Cookies.

Dirk: Well, I gotta go. Take care, Freyja!

10.00 a.m.

Lloyd: Today's Harmony Day. You know that, right? Freyja, this is my gift toyou. Goodbye.

11.00 a.m.

??? Freyja, can I speak with you?

Me: ?

Angelo: It's Harmony Day. So I got this gift for you, Freyja.

He gives me cookies.

Angelo: Well, I'm sure that you're busy, Freyja. I'll see you around!

Winter Harmony Day

If your Character is a Girl, Winter Harmony Day on 14 Winter is the occasion togive Cookies, CHocolate Cookies or Chocolate Cake to the Eligible Bachelors inthe game.As on Spring Harmony Day, Joan will sell both Chocolate Cookies and ChocolateCake at the Cafe on this date..

If your Character is a Boy, you will receive scheduled Visits from each of theEligible Girls, similar to the Visits that a Girl Character received on theSpring Harmony Day.

Winter Harmony Day

Winter Harmony Day on 14 Winter is the Festival wherein Girls give Gifts toEligible Bachelors.

If your Character is a Girl, when you first awaken, you will receive a prompt: Today is Harmony Day! Give a chocolaty treat to that special some one!

As on the Spring Harmony Day, Joan will sell both Chocolate Cookies andChocolate Cake. Both Chocolate Cake and Chocolate Cookies will be recognisedas Harmony Day Gifts, but ordinary Cookies will not be considered as such.

I tested this by giving Angelo Cookies. He simply responded with his usual:

Angelo: Wow! Thank you very much.

For Chocolate Cookies or Chocolate Cake, on the other hand, his Response was:

Angelo: Wow, is this for Harmony Day? This is great! Thank you very much,Freyja!

Give one or the other to each of the Eligible Bachelors to raise their HeartLevels and as a return for the Gifts they brought to you on the Spring HarmonyDay.

The Harmony Day Responses of each of the Bachelors is:

Ivan: This is for...? (ah!) Ah, that's right, today is Harmony Day. Thank youvery much, Freyja.

Dirk: Huh? Is this for me? (laughing) Oh, for Harmony Day! Thanks, Freyja!

Lloyd (coughing) Oh, for Harmony Day? Thanks, Freyja.

Angelo: Wow, is this for Harmony Day? This is great! Thank you very much,Freyja!

Amir: For me? Ah, right. Harmony Day. That's a tradition around here, isn'tit? Thank you, Freyja.

Courtship and Romance

The main distinctiion between the Boy version and the Girl version of GrandBazaar is in terms of Courtship and Marriage. Heart Events will differobviously according to your Character's gender but Rival Heart Events will bethe same in both games.

A successful Courtship requires regular social interactions. Giving aprospective Spouse Gifts that he/she loves as often as possible will raiseHeart Levels fairly quickly but even if you are unable to give some one a MostFavourite or Favourite Item, regular Dialogue is important. In fact, if youneglect any individual in Grand Bazaar, he/she will refuse your Gifts!

Heart Events and Rival Heart Events are romantic Events that occur eitherbetween your Character and an Eligible Girl or Bachelor or between theEligible Girl or Bachelor and your Rival for his/her affections. The firstHeart Event has no requirements in terms of Heart Level but subsequent HeartEvents do. Where Rival Heart Events are concerned, there is a 'ceiling' interms of the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl/Bachelor. If the Eligible Girlor Bachelor's Heart Level exceeds a specific Level, you no longer will be ableto experience the Rival Heart Event. In terms of the 1st Rival Heart Event, the basic Requirement is that the Eligible Girl/Bachelor has not attainedPurple Heart Level. Once Purple Heart level is reached, you no longer will beable to experience the 1st Rival Heart Event.

Although Rival Couples do not marry in Grand Bazaar, Harvest Moon games areenriched by the Events that can occur and it always is a pity to miss anyEvent. You may wish to be a little more cautious about raising Heart Levelsuntil you have experience the first Rival Heart Events for each couple. Notethat there are a couple of Festivals in the Spring Season that are gearedtowards Friendship/Affection increases. The first of these is the four-dayFlower Festivla and the second is Spring Harmony Day. The Tea Party at the endof the month is another occasion to increase the Friendship Levels of everyone in the village.

If you do not raise any one's Heart Level too quickly, you should be able toexperience all of the 1st Heart Events and Rival Heart Events iin the firstSpring provided always that you go to the right location at the right time. Many of these Events do have weather requirements and will not occur on dayswhen the weather is bad. Events will not occur on Bazaar Days or FestivalDays either. Delays may occur, therefore, for any Event that can be triggeredonly on Saturday or Sunday as Bazaars tend to be scheduled on weekend days.

If you do raise Heart Levels too quickly to be able to experience the 1st RivalHeart Event for any Rival Couple, you always can wait until you haveexperienced all four Heart Events, then lower the Heart Level of the EligibleGirl;/Bachelor in order to be able to trigger the Rival Events. The nextsection of this Guide deals with this strategy in detail.

As previously indicated, in Grand Bazaar, unlike some of the other Harvest Moongames, although Rival Heart Events occur, the Rival Couple NEVER will marry. You therefore have no real Rival in terms of any aspirations to marry aspecific Eligible Girl or Bachelor.

Another aspect of Grand Bazaar Courtship that is different from sometraditional Harvest Moon Courtship requirements is an added requirement foreach Eligible Girl and Bachelor to raise the Heart Levels of specificVillagers before any proposal of marriage will be accepted.

These involve the Eligible Girl or Bachelor's Family or another individual whois treated like a family member and are as follows:

Ivan: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Dirk for a successful proposalDirk: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Ivan for a successful proposal Lloyd: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Felix and Sherry for a successfulproposal

Sherry: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Felix and Lloyd for a successfulproposalAntoinette: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Claude for a successful proposalDaisy: Must have at least 3 Hearts with Stuart and Ethel for a successfulproposal

There are Friendship Events in Grand Bazaar with Heart Level requirements. Asin any Harvest Moon game, it is a good idea to raise the Heart/FriendshipLevels of ALL Characters as high as possible ultimately in order to be able toexperience all Events.

The only exception to this strategy is the need for low Heart Levels if youwish to experience the Rival Heart Events. The next section of this Guidedeals with strategies for raising and lowering Heart Levels.

The text of all Heart and Rival Heart Events will be found in my Courtship andMarriage Guide in the sections that deal with each of the Eligible Girlsand/or Bachelors involved in the Events.

As discussed earlier, Heart Events actively involve only your Character and anEligible Girl or Bachelor even if other Characters are present. There is apoint in the Event where you will be required to make a choice between twoResponses. The Response that you choose will affect the Character's HeartLevel either positively or negatively. In Grand Bazaar, unlike most otherHarvest Moon games, in some of the Heart Events, although one Response may bebetter than the other, often neither is truly negative. Both results areincluded in the text of any Heart Event.

Rival Heart Events, on the other hand, involve only the Eligible Girl orBachelor and your Rival for his/her affections. You will witness the Eventbut not be an active participant in it. There may be other peripheralCharacters in the Event but the main Characters are the Eligible Girl/Bachelorand your Rival.

If you choose the incorrect response in the course of any Heart Event, it maydecrease the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl/Bachelor but it will not preventyou from experiencing the next Heart Event nor from marrying the individualwhen all requirements are met. If you feel that you made the wrong response, you can reload your game to experience the day again with any Events that canbe triggered, but once you have saved any result, you will not be able toexperience that Event again.

The correct Response will result in an increase to the Heart Level of theEligible Girl/Bachelor. The incorrect Response will result in a loss ofAffection Points but as previously indicated, it will not prevent you frommarriage. It simply will delay the next Heart Event as you will be requiredto regain the Affection you lost.

The purchase of the traditional Harvest Moon 'Big Bed' is a requirement forMarriage. After marriage, you can have a Child although the Child never willbecome an adult.

Remembering Birthdays with a Gift is important in winning friends and pursuingthe courtship of any Eligible Girl or Bachelor.

Stuart will advise you: Freyja, love is great. If you find somebody special, give them presents every single day. You can find out what they like fromtheir friends, you know.

At the weekly Bazaar an unnamed Character has a Gift-Wrapping Stall where shewill wrap any item for you for 200G. Every Character has a favourite colourand gift-wrapping is available in three colours.

Gift Wrap Lady: Every one has their favourite wrapping paper colour.

Giving an item that an individual particularly likes wrapped in his/herfavourite colour will boost its value in terms of advancing friendship orcourtship. Note, however, that an individual you have neglected will notaccept ANY Gift so you should 'meet and greet' individuals on a daily basiseven if you cannot give them items they love.

Cooked Dishes often are more desirable Gifts to certain Characters than itemsyou have collected, Crops or other raw ingredients, although Flowers arepopular with many, as they are in every Harvest Moon game.

The Cooked Dishes sold at Joan's Stall at the Bazaar as well as those on theMenu at her Cafe are chosen randomly so you should be alert for new Dishes.. Any Cooked Dish you purchase will be given to you as an actual item, so youcan sell it, consume it or give it to some one as a Gift. Whenever youpurchase a Cooked Dish, Joan will 'teach' you the Recipe. Buying CookedDishes therefore is one method of adding to your Cookbook.

During the Flower Festival, you should give every one Flowers if you are ableto do so. Even individuals who ordinary do not care much for Flowers willreceive them happily during the Flower Festival.

On a Character's Birthday, he/she will be happy to receive items as Gifts thatordinarily would not excite him/her.

When you give any Character a wrapped Gift, his/her first Response will be oneof excitement and anticipation of unwrapping and discovering the identity ofthe Gift. The second Response will be the usual response that the Charactermakes to the specific item you are giving.

At the start of the game, if your Character is a Boy, there will be fourEligible Girls, namely Freya, Sherry, Antoinette and Daisy.. If yourCharacter is a Girl, there will be four Eligible Bachelors in the form ofIvan, his brother Dirk, Angelo and Lloyd.. Later, a new Eligible Girl in theform of Emiko if your Character is a Boy or another Bachelor, Amir, if yourCharacter is a Girl will be added to the list. Note that both Amir and Emikowill be added to the Characters List irrespective of your own gender. Amirwill be introduced on 3 Winter by Mayor Felix. You have to investigate theWaterfall in the second year if you wish to meet Emiko.

Raising Heart Levels

Special Events in Harvest Moon usually are based on the Heart Levels of theparticipants. Events that occur between your Character and a Character who iseligible for Marriage are known as Heart Events. Those that occur betweenCharacters eligible for Marriage and your Rival are known as Rival HeartEvents.

Grand Bazaar follows traditional Harvest Moon Courtship rituals in the numberof Heart and Rival Heart Events that exist for any Character. There are fourHeart Events and four Rival Heart Events for each Character who is eligiblefor Marriage, apart from Amir and Emiko, for whom you will have no Rival.

Heart Events have Heart Level requirements. Until an Eligible Girl/Bachelorreaches the required Heart Level, designated by a coloured Heart Icon onhis/her Portrait, you will be unable to expeirence the next Heart Event. Youmust experience all four Heart Events for an Eligible Girl/Bachelor if youwish to marry him/her.

Rival Heart Events have Heart Level requirements as well but these, inopposition to Heart Events, depend on low Heart Levels rather than high ones. If you EXCEED the required Heart Level for any Rival Heart Event, you nolonger will be able to experience it.

Gifts that are given to Characters either raise or lower Affection/FriendshipLevels, so it is possible to lower the Heart Level of an EligibleGirl/Bachelor in order to experience the Rival Heart Events.

Rival Heart Events are year-specific, unlike Heart Events. The reason for thisis to give your Character an advantage in games where the Rival can steal yourintended spouse. In Harvest Moon games where Rival Couples can marry, thefourth and final Rival Heart Event cannot occur before the fourth year. Youtherefore have three full years to win the affections of the EligibleGirl/Bachelor before he/she can accept your Rival instead.

Even though there are no Rival Marriages in Grand Bazaar, Rival Heart Eventsfollow the traditional Harvest Moon formulae. The first Rival Heart Event canoccur in the first year, but each successive Rival Heart Event is delayed byanother year. In other words, the 2nd Rival Heart Event cannot occur beforethe 2nd Year. The 3rd Rival Heart Event cannot occur before the 3rd Year andthe fourth and final Rival Heart Event cannot occur before the 4th Year.

Players who like to expeirence all possible Events in any Harvest Moon gametherefore either will delay marriage until the fourth year or will choose tomarry Amir or Emiko, Characters for whom there is no Rival.

A player who wishes to experience all Heart Events for any EligibleGirl/Bachelor usually will raise Heart Levels to Yellow Heart Level as quicklyas possible, experiencing the four Heart Events before he/she begins to lowersHeart Levels in order to be able to experience the Rival Heart Events. Players often refer to this strategy as 'playing with Heart Levels'. For eachEligible Girl/Bachelor, there is one Gift worth 800 points and one that isworth -1000 points. These items allow a player to raise or lower HeartLevels quickly.

Apart from the Heart Events and Rival Heart Events that are linked to theCharacters who are Eligible for Marriage, most Harvest Moon games, includingGrand Bazaar, contain Friendship Events. Although some players refer to themas 'Random Events', they are not random at all, but depend on fulfillingspecific requirements.

The most important Requirement in any Friendship Event is Friendship Level orHeart Level. In Grand Bazaar, the lowest Friendship Level Requirement is 4Hearts or 30,000 FP. You can find the current Friendship or Affection Levelof any Character by accessing the Characters Page in your Farm Assets Menu.

Although some Friendship Events will occur when all participants reach 30,000FP or 4 Hearts, others require 9 Hearts or 60,000 FP. You will find theschedules of all Friendship Events in my Grand Bazaar Characters Guide.

Friendship Point Values

Specific point values are attached to each interaction in Grand Bazaar, even ifyou never can see the precise totals you have earned. The only way that theplayer can gauge current Heart/Friendship Levels is according to the number of'Hearts' displayed in the Farm Assets Menu. If the Character is Eligible forMarriage, his/her Portrait will include a coloured Heart Icon. These 'Hearts'span quite a few Affection/Friendship Points, however, and are not preciseindicators.

The values of social interactions are as follows:

Meeting and Greeting an Individual: 100 Points

Daily Gift-Giving is the other way by which Affection/Friendship Points can beearned on a daily basis. The value of the Gift is based on the degree ofliking that the recipient has for it. Values are as follows:

Most Favourite Gift: +800 AP/FPOrdinary Favourites: +500 AP/FPLoved Gifts: +150 AP/FPAcceptable/Liked Gifts: +50 AP/FPDisliked Gifts: -200 AP/FPDetested Gifts: -500 AP/FPGift of Utter Horror: -1000 AP/FP

As you can see, even if you cannot give an Item that a Character loves, anAcceptable Gift, coupled with a daily 'meeting and greeting' ritual, earns+150 AP/FP with the Individual.

On a Character's Birthday, the Value of any Gift is multiplied. A BirthdayGift's values are:

Most Favourite Gift: +4000 FPOrdinary Favourites: +2500 FPLoved Gifts: +750 FPAcceptable/Liked Gifts: +250 FPDisliked Gifts: -1000 FPDetested Gifts: -2500 FPGift of Utter Horror: -5000 FP

If you study the values, you will note that the negative value of unwantedGifts are multiplied when given on a Character's Birthday.

Gift-Wrapping is an Option in Grand Bazaar and can enhance the value of an Itemsignificantly.

As described in an earlier section of this Guide, each Character has afavourite colour of Wrapping Paper. Unfortunately, the only opportunity towrap an Item as a Gift is at the Weekly Bazaar but if you have the storagespace for them, the values of these Gifts are increased significantly. TheGift-Wrapping Service for any Item in your Rucksack costs 200G. Wrapped Giftseach occupy a single slot in your Rucksack or Storage. Wrapped Gifts of anycolour have the following values:

Most Favourite Gift: +1000 FPOrdinary Favourites: +600 FPLoved Gifts: +250 FPAcceptable/Liked Gifts: +150 FPDisliked Gifts: -300 FPDetested Gifts: -600 FPGift of Utter Horror: -1200 FP

When the Gift is wrapped in a Character's favourite Colour, the value isboosted even higher:

Most Favourite Gift: +1100 FPOrdinary Favourites: +700 FPLoved Gifts: +350 FPAcceptable/Liked Gifts: +250 FPDisliked Gifts: -400 FPDetested Gifts: -700 FPGift of Utter Horror: -1300 FP

A Wrapped Birthday Gift has an even higher value, combining the Birthday GiftBonus with the Gift-Wrapping Bonus. Any colour of wrapping for a BirthdayGift results in the following values:

Most Favourite Gift: +6000 FPOrdinary Favourites: +3000 FPLoved Gifts: +1050 FPAcceptable/Liked Gifts: +350 FPDisliked Gifts: -1300 FPDetested Gifts: -3000 FPGift of Utter Horror: -15,000 FP

A Birthday Gift wrapped in a Character's Favourite Colour has the highestvalues of all:

Most Favourite Gift: +6100 FPOrdinary Favourites: +3100 FPLoved Gifts: +1150 FPAcceptable/Liked Gifts: +450 FPDisliked Gifts: -1400 FPDetested Gifts: -3100 FPGift of Utter Horror: -15,100 FP

The Advantages of Friendship

The advantages of Friendship in any Harvest Moon game are practical as well asemotionally satisfying. Characters often will confide interesting or vitalinformation when their Friendship Levels increase. In terms of Courtship andMarriage, raising Heart Levels is essential but even where Characters who arenot Eligible for Marriage are concerned, raising Heart Levels can unlockspecial Events known appropriately as Friendship Events. Grand Bazaar hasalmost thirty Friendship Events. The schedules and requirements for each ofthese Events is included in my Characters Guide.

The Blue Feather

The Blue Feather is a traditional item that is the necessary accompaniment toany Marriage Proposal in most Harvest Moon games. In some games, it is soldat a local Market when your Character achieves a specific Heart Level, usuallyOrange, with any Eligible Girl or Bachelor. In other games, it is a Gift fromanother Character.

In Grand Bazaar, it is Stuart and Ethel who will bring the Blue Feather to yourFarmhouse when any Bachelor or Eligible Girl has reached Orange Heart, buttheir visit may not occur before Spring in the second year. It is possiblethat both Stuart and Ethel must have at least 3 Hearts before they will deignto bestow the Blue Feather upon you.

On the first day of the 2nd Year, if you have any Bachelor or Eligible Girl atOrange Heart Level or higher, you may receive a visit from Stuart and Ethelwhen you re-enter your Farmhouse after 6.00 a.m. Note that the Event will notoccur when you first awaken or when you LEAVE your Farmhouse for the firsttime, unlike other Farmhouse Events in Grand Bazaar.

The Blue Feather you are given is the one that Stuart used to proposesuccessfully to Ethel many years previously. In the course of the Event,Stuart will declare:

Stuart: The feather won't do it all. You have to have a good relationshipwith the person and their friends and family.

My Grand Bazaar Courtship and Marriage Guide includes details as to thespecific Characters who must have at least three Hearts if you wish to proposesuccessfully to any Eligible Girl or Bachelor.

Easiest Gifts List:

Although Characters often have 'Most Favourite Gifts' that they appreciate morethan others, it is quite sufficient to give a Character a Gift he/she simplylikes as long as you do this on a regular basis. At the start of the game, your Character's resources will be very limited and a primary focus in termsof items probably will be in terms of generating sales at the weekly Bazaar. Nonetheless, there are inexpensive items that serve well to increasefriendship and affection with Characters.

The Easiest Gifts List is a list of items that are neither particularlyvaluable nor difficult to obtain. They may not be a Character's MostFavourite Gift in most cases, but when an individual 'Loves' the item, it is avery good Gift. When a Character simply 'Likes' the Item, it still willincrease Friendship/Heart Levels and is better than no Gift at all. Rememberthat it is better to 'meet and greet' every individual, even if you have NOGift to offer than to ignore any one.

A true 'Most Favourite Gift' is worth more than Gifts that a Character Loves orLikes. One usually can tell when a Gift is a 'Most Favourite' by theCharacter's Response, which may mention the Item by name instead of simplydeclaring that he/she loves it or likes it very much.

An example of a true Most Favourite Gift is Herbal Perfume for Ivan. When yougive this Item to Ivan, it will elicit the following response:

For Herb Perfume: This is herb perfume. What? I can have it? Thank you verymuch. I really love how this perfume smells.

Here are some easy and inexpensive Gifts with lists of the Individuals whowill accept them happily:

Characters who Love Flowers: Daisy, Ivan, Emiko Who Love Moondrop: Angelo, Claire, Sherry Who Love Blue Magic Flower: Lloyd, Antoinette, Ethel Who Love Red Magic Flower: Dirk, Raul, Mayor Felix Who Love Locusts: Stuart

Characters who like Flowers: Sherry, Freya, Dirk, Angelo, Mayor, Ethel

Characters who Love Insects: Lloyd, Kevin Who Love Beetles: Dirk Who Love Butterflies: Freya, Sherry Who Love Dragonflies: Cindy Who Love Frogs: Antoinette

Characters who Like Insects: Dirk, Angelo, Ivan, Claude

Characters who Love Walnuts: Angelo, Daisy, Emiko

Characters who Love Chestnuts: Angelo, Daisy, Emiko

Characters who Love Sea Urchins: Claude

Characters who Like Rocks: Isaac, Wilbur

Characters who like Branches: Isaac, Wilbur

Characters who Love Fish:

Characters who Like Fish: Claude

Characters who Love Chocolate: Freya, Antoinette

Day by Day Heart Events/Rival Heart Events Calendar

Day by Day Heart Events/Rival Heart Events Calendar

This Calendar includes all Heart Events and Rival Heart Events for allBachelors and Eligible Girls with the exception of Emiko. Emiko's HeartEvents can occur on any Day of the Week in any Season, with the exception ofher 4th Heart Event which will not occur in Winter when the Waterfall isfrozen. Another reason I have not included Emiko's Events in this Day-by-DayCalendar is because each Event has a Gift total Requirement. You will findthe schedule of her Heart Events with their Requirements in the section ofthis Guide that is devoted to Emiko.

There are two separate Day-by-Day Calendars here. The first lists all Heartand Rival Heart Events that have no Requirements in terms of Year. The secondconsists solely of Rival Heart Events for the second year and later. ANYEvent that is listed in the Day-by-Day Calendar for the first year can betriggered in any subsequent year provided any and all Requirements have beenmet.

The difference between Heart Events and Rival Heart Events in terms of HeartLevel Requirements often confuses players but if you view it logically, youwill see that the Event requirements are based on the degree of Affection thatthe Eligible Girl or Bachelor has for your Character. Rival Heart Events willnot trigger if the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl or Bachelor is TOO HIGH. As any Rival Heart Event deals with the relationship between the EligibleGirl/Bachelor and your Rival, it makes sense that he/she would not beinterested in your Rival if his/her Affections are focused on your Character. Each successive Rival Heart Event brings your Rival closer to the EligibleGirl or Bachelor.

In Grand Bazaar, Rival Heart Events lead nowhere ultimately as there are noRival Marriages so there is no reason to avoid them. At the same time, asthey will not lead to any Rival Marriage, there is no compelling reason toexperience them apart from being able to experience as many Events aspossible.

Rival Heart Events always are 'year-specific'. It is only the first Rival HeartEvent that can be experienced in the first year. To experience the 2nd RivalHeart Event, you must wait until the second year and make certain that youhave not raised the Heart Level of the Eligible Girl/Bachelor too high.

The third Rival Heart Event cannot be experienced before the third year and thefourth and final Rival Heart Event will not trigger before the fourth Year.

If you wish to experience all Rival Heart Events, there are two main strategiesfor doing so. The first would be to raise the Heart Levels of any Characterfor whom a Rival exists VERY SLOWLY. This strategy is not practical for anyone who likes to interact with all Characters often, remembering Birthdays andcelebrating all Festivals.

The second strategy is the one that I employ and recommend. Go ahead and raisethe Heart Levels of every Character as quickly as possible in order to be ableto experience all Heart Events and other Events with Friendship requirements. Do not worry about the Rival Heart Events until you reach the fourth year.

Once you reach the fourth year, you can LOWER the Heart Levels of everyEligible Girl/Bachelor with a Rival and then effortlessly experience all fourRival Heart Events for each couple. By the fourth year, you should be ableto obtain the 'Most Favourite Gift' for every Character without any trouble. As a Most Favourite Gift is worth +800 AP, you can raise Heart Levels againvery quickly after experiencing all Rival Heart Events.

If you wish to marry before the 4th Year (and many players do), you eithershould choose Amir or Emiko (as they have no Rivals) or resign yourself tomissing the Rival Heart Events for the Character you intend to marry.

In terms of Heart Events, there is no upper limit to Heart Levels. You canexperience all four Heart Events for any Eligible Girl or Bachelor even if theindividual is at deepest red Heart Level, if you did not experience thempreviously. Where Heart Events are concerned, the Heart Level requirementsall stipulate a minimum Heart Level. This is very logical as each successiveHeart Event presupposes a deeper level of affection between the EligibleGirl/Bachelor and your Character.

In the following Day-by-Day Calendar, unless Weather requirements are stated, you should assume that the Event can occur on any Sunny or Cloudy Day. NOEvents will occur on the Days of Festivals or the Weekly Bazaar.

The sections devoted to each Eligible Girl/Bachelor include the actual texts oftheir Events. The following is merely a quick reference Calendar Guide togive players some idea of the Events that can occur on any specific day of theWeek. An Event that can occur on more than one day, therefore, will be listedon each day that it can be triggered.

Unlocking the Windmills

Although the dates when new options are unlocked are set for the most part andoccur in Events wherein a member of the community will visit you in your Homeat 6.00 a.m., bad weather can intervene and delay an Event.

For example, the First Windmill usually will be unlocked on 24 Spring in thefirst year, but if it rains on that day, the Event should occur on the firstsunny day after that date. Similarly, the 2nd Windmill should be unlockedafter the Cow Festival, either on 16 Summer or 17 Summer. The third Windmillshould be unlocked near the beginning of Autumn. There appears to be a windowof opportunity for these Events that embraces about three days, so do not bealarmed if an Event does not occur on the date given in my Calendar.

Bazaar Day

Your Stall

Felix will give you a Tutorial on the first Bazaar Day at 6.00 a.m. and willgive you 3 Chocolate as well to help with your inventory. You need not sellthe Chocolate if you would rather use it for Gifts. You can substitute anyItem and Felix will buy that instead during the Tutorial.

To set up your Stall, press the B Button first to ring the Bell, then open yourBag and choose three items from it. Any stack counts as a single item forpurposes of display.

The Bazaar opens officially at 10.00 a.m., although you can enter earlier andset up your Stall. At 10.00 a.m., Felix makes an official Announcement toopen the Bazaar, balloons are set loose in celebration and customers comethrough the northern arch in a noisy throng.

Although the Bazaar opens at 10.00 a.m., it is only your Stall that may beready for business. Between the hour of 10.00 a.m. and 11.00 a.m., youusually will not be able to buy items at any other Stall. At 11.00 a.m., youwill find other Stalls open for business.

When the bell rings, customers who are interested will display an ExclamationPoint. When they approach your Stall, they either will stand in front of anitem, indicating quantity desired with the icon of a number or they willdisplay (...) to show that you have nothing satisfactory, or they may engageyou in dialogue by showing the icon of a face.

Prices paid for your items by other merchants if you seek to sell them at theirstalls will be much lower than the price you can obtain at your Stall. Similarly, the price that Raul will pay at his Shop is lower than the priceyour item will be worth at your Stall. For example, if you sell an Egg toLloyd at his Stall, he will pay only 80G but if you display it on your Stall, its price will be 130G. Lloyd pays 250G for a Sea Urchin with 1/2 Star, butyou can sell it on your Stall for 400G. Lloyd similarly will pay only 5000Gfor a piece of Gold Ore that you can sell at your Stall for 8000G.

Although Felix will tell you that you cannot sell items that you have purchasedat the Bazaar, Cooked Dishes purchased at the Cafe can be sold.

Incidentally, at each specific Bazaar Level, Items that vary appear to do soaccording to the Season and Week. For example, in Autumn, until the 22nd,Felix had Chocolate, Cat Bell and Dog Bone at his Stall. On 22 Autumn, theTruffle took the place of the Dog Bone.

Your initial Stall will have three slots for items. You can enlarge your Stallby making an Order with Gannon. You can enhance the range of your Bell bymaking and wearing a Yellow Ring. The Yellow Ring is an Advanced WindmillRecipe and you will not be able to fashion it until Wonderfuls becomeavailable at the Bazaar.

Initial Bazaar Stalls

When Felix announces the Goal of 15,000G - 20,000G, the Stalls and Items thatwill be sold are as follows:

Wrapping Stall

Players who lived in Mineral Town will recall the gift-wrapping option atJeff's Supermarket. In Grand Bazaar, that option is available at the weeklyBazaar with an additional 'twist'. You can choose one of three differentcolours of wrapping paper. Characters all have their favourite colours, soyou not only can earn bonus points with them by giving them a gift-wrappeditem they particularly like but by wrapping it in their favourite colour ofpaper as well!

Wrapping Stall Choose from a red, blue or yellow box, then put what you want wrapped inside. Then we will wrap the item for you! People like to receive gifts that arewrapped. You can tell that some one put a lot of thought into a gift whenit's wrapped.

Each colour of Box costs 200G. Characters all have favourite colours.

Lady at Stall: How do you choose the right colour wrapping paper? You have tofigure out the colour the recipient likes. People will tend to wear thecolours they like.
