1. Statement of PurposeA. General
(1) This manual has been reviewed and accepted by the FAA. Additionally, this manual contains data that has been approved in a manner acceptable to the FAA Administrator.
(2) Thismanualprovidesfieldmaintenanceandminorrepairproceduresforcomposite spinner assemblies manufactured by Hartzell Propeller Inc. The text throughout this manual assumes that the spinner has been removed from the propeller assembly, except for certain minor repairs that often can be performed on the aircraft.

(8) Make an inspection of the repaired area in accordance with the section "Coin-Tap Inspection Procedure" in the Repair Limits chapter of this manual.
(a) Repair any debonds or voids.
(9) RefinishinaccordancewiththeFinishProcedureschapterofthismanual.
B. Dome Erosion Shield Repair
(1) Thisrepairmaybeperformedforpinholes,pitting,andporosityforwardofthedome/dome erosion shield parting line.
(2) Repair any defect or damage that is through the dome erosion shield into the graphitefiberandKevlar® material in accordance with the steps in the Nose Erosionsectionofthischapter,beforeperformingtherepairofthedomeerosion shield.
WARNING 1: ADHESIVES AND SOLVENTS ARE FLAMMABLE AND TOXIC TO THESKIN,EYES,ANDRESPIRATORYTRACT.SKINANDEYEPROTECTIONAREREQUIRED.AVOIDPROLONGEDCONTACTAND BREATHING OF VAPORS. USE SOLVENT RESISTANT GLOVESTOMINIMIZESKINCONTACTANDWEARSAFETYGLASSESFOREYEPROTECTION.USEINAWELLVENTILATEDAREAAWAYFROMSPARKSANDFLAME.READ AND OBSERVE ALL WARNING LABELS.
WARNING 2: WEARVINYLORLATEXGLOVESWHENREPAIRINGSPINNERDOME EROSION TO PREVENT TOXIC MATERIAL FROM CONTAMINATING SKIN.
(3) Repair Procedure
(a) Apply adhesive CM71 to the area to be repaired.
(b) QuicklyremoveexcessadhesiveandimmediatelyapplytalcpowderCM72 on the adhesive.
(c) Usingaswirlingmotion,pushthetalcpowderCM72intothedamagedarea.
(d) Permittheareatodryforapproximately5minutes.
(e) Using180gritorfinersandpaper,carefullyhandsandtheareauntilsmooth.
(f) Repeatsteps2.B.(3)(a)through3.B.(3)(e),asnecessary,tomakesureofa smooth surface.
(g) RefinishinaccordancewiththeFinishProcedureschapterofthismanual.

G. Replacing a Nutplate on a Composite Bulkhead
(1) NutplateRemoval,Method1
WARNING: SOLVENTSAREFLAMMABLEANDTOXICTOTHESKIN,EYES,ANDRESPIRATORYTRACT.SKINANDEYEPROTECTIONAREREQUIRED.AVOIDPROLONGEDCONTACTANDBREATHING OF VAPORS. USE SOLVENT RESISTANT GLOVES TOMINIMIZESKINCONTACTANDWEARSAFETYGLASSESFOREYEPROTECTION.USEINAWELLVENTILATEDAREAAWAYFROMSPARKSANDFLAME.READ AND OBSERVE ALL WARNING LABELS.
(a) UsingsolventacetoneCM173,MEKCM106,orMPKCM219,thoroughlycleanalloilandgreasefrombothsidesofthebulkhead,aroundthenutplate to be removed.
(b) Apply masking material (aluminum foil tape) to the area around the nutplate to avoid damaging the composite material during grinding.
CAUTION 1: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN GRINDING THE RIVET SHANKS TO AVOID DAMAGE TO THE COMPOSITE BULKHEAD. A DAMAGED BULKHEAD MUST BE RETURNED TO HARTZELL PROPELLER INC.
CAUTION 2: DO NOT OVERHEAT THE COMPOSITE MATERIAL DURING GRINDINGOFTHERIVETHEADS.IFNECESSARY,USEWATER TO COOL THE NUTPLATE DURING GRINDING.
(c) Usingasmallhand-grinder,removetheheadoftherivetsthatholdthenutplate in place on the bulkhead.
CAUTION: USE EXTREME CAUTION WHEN REMOVING THE NUTPLATES TO AVOID PULLING THE RIVET HEADS THROUGH THE BULKHEAD. A DAMAGED BULKHEAD MUST BE RETURNED TO HARTZELL PROPELLER INC.
(d) Remove the nutplate from the bulkhead by lightly pulling with pliers.
1 Ifthenutplatecannotberemoved,usethegrindertoremovemore material from the nutplate and rivets until the nutplate can be removed.
(e) Remove the rivets from the bulkhead.
1 Ifnecessary,removetherivetheadsfromthebacksideofthebulkhead by using a small pin punch.
(f) Remove the masking material (aluminum foil tape).
(g) UsingacetoneCM173,MEKCM106,orMPKCM219,cleantheholeandthe area around the hole.

(b) Application

1 Prepare the desired paint mixture in accordance with the mixture proportions specified in Table 3-2 Consumables and Applicability.
2 Using cheesecloth CM159 or equivalent dampened with solvent acetone CM173, MEK CM106, or MPK CM219, wipe all surfaces of the part to be painted.
3 Permit the solvent acetone CM173, MEK CM106, or MPK CM219 to dry.
4 Paint the entire surface with the specified paint mix using a smooth, even spraying motion in three passes until the entire surface to be painted is covered.
NOTE: Three (3) passes of paint over the surface is considered to be one layer of paint.
a The maximum permitted film thickness of the paint (color) is 2 mils when dry.
(1) The equivalent of 5 mils wet coat = 2 mils dry coat.
(2) Wet coat thickness can be measured using a Sherwin Williams® wet film/mil gauge standard.
