In This Issue: The Great Fete Remembrance Day Working Bee Canteen Closure
Swimming Sports Prep and Start of School Dates for 2017 Reminders Notice Sent Home
Dear Parents, With less than a week until the Great Fete, excitement is building to a crescendo! I would like to thank all of you who have worked so hard so that Saturday will hopefully be a huge success. We have had amazing support, particularly over the past few weeks in terms of the extraordinary number of goods donated, sponsorship, responses to our numerous requests for wine, chocolate, raffle tickets, etc. Hartwell is a wonderful school community. Let’s hope that the weather is favourable and that we all enjoy what should be a great community day. The last few reminders include requests to: -
Please return sold raffle tickets with the money
or unsold tickets. We have parents asking for extra
tickets and will redistribute any that are unsold.
If you can bake a cake or slice for the cake stall
and send it to school on Friday afternoon or
Saturday it would be appreciated. This stall
traditionally makes a lot of money and so I urge
you all to consider supporting it once again. Cake
packages were sent home yesterday.
Wrist bands are still for sale at the reduced
price until 3.30pm on Wednesday. They will be
sent home on Thursday.
Please try hard to volunteer an hour or two to
help on a stall. Some stalls still require extra help.
To do this, please contact the office, me or your
class representative.
No more donations can be accepted for the
second hand books, trash & treasure or
second hand clothes stalls.
Thanks for considering these matters.

returned to school reporting that it had been a worthwhile experience. At 11.10am we had our own Remembrance Day service which was led by students. It was short, poignant and meaningful and I hope your children came home talking about Remembrance Day and what it means. Thanks to Simon Lewison and Bridget Gatt who led the service at school; to the senior choir who sang beautifully and to three Year 3 students- Imogen, Milly and Niki who shared some very special art work they have produced about Remembrance Day. Congratulations also to Ben Maloney who organised this service and rehearsed with the students. Thanks to Clare

Hyland and Louise Gardiner for their part in
organising students for this service. Working Bee The working bee held last Saturday was very successful with over forty families represented- another great example of the great Hartwell school community! The main project was to tidy the grounds in preparation for the Fete. There was a lot of weeding, sweeping, cleaning of drains etc, done. The tan bark under the Prep play equipment was turned over and moved back closer to the play equipment, the nature strips were mowed and shrubs were planted outside the art room, near the Prep play equipment, and in the main courtyard. The small area outside the art room was paved which makes it much neater and safer. We also managed to sweep the top synthetic turf and the basketball / netball courts, remove stones from these surfaces and clean up along the fence line. Thanks to Andrew Martin for organising the working bee, Jenny Martin for buying the supplies for the BBQ and to everyone else who supported this venture. Finally – well done to all the families who attended the working bee and assisted throughout the day. Your support and assistance is really appreciated. Canteen Closure The canteen will be CLOSED this coming Friday so that it can be used for fete preparations. Please do NOT send lunch orders to school or place them on line for Friday. Thanks for your help with this matter. Swimming Sports The swimming sports held last week for students in Years 3-6 were a huge success. The event was a lot of fun for all the students and there was no pressure to be the best swimmer. Many thanks to all the teaching staff who were involved- whether by supervising novelty events, supporting students who were reluctant to participate, giving out table tennis balls signifying where the students placed in their race, organising ratios on buses or whatever. The feeling when I visited the pool was sensational and I observed all the students doing their best and cheering on their friends. Jo Bayes, of course deserves extra credit as she was the organiser and set the tone for a very successful day. Well done from all of us Jo. Your organisation was again impeccable. Prep and Start of School Dates 2017 For your interest, this is what we have decided on for the start of school next year: - Parents to collect student books: Tuesday January 24th 8.00am -1pm

All students P-6 at school all day - Friday 3rd February:
The Preps will attend school Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday until the week of Labour Day. Reminders
The next “Ready, Set, Go” session will not be
held this Friday due to the fete. It will be on Friday
November 25th from 9.40-10.40am. Parents should
bring their children to the Prep learning community
at 9.40am and then head to the hall.
Please remember that you should make an
appointment to see teachers if you require more
than a quick chat before and after school. It is not
appropriate for parents to expect teachers to be
able to address their concerns at the start of the
day without an appointment, unless it is an
emergency. Thank you for understanding this
matter.

Kris Moore Principal PE UPDATE HPS HOUSE SWIMMING CARVIVAL SIZZLES Congratulations to all Year 3 to 6 students who participated in our House Swimming Carnival last Thursday. The day was an outstanding success with so many swimmers challenging themselves and achieving their own personal best. The Hartwell spirit was in full voice as everyone cheered on their team mates. A special mention to all of our Year 3 students who were particularly spectacular in their first swimming carnival. They really showed us that ‘having a go’ and ‘doing your best’ with such enthusiasm, really is a recipe for success. The year 5 & 6 relays were also very exciting. Thank you to all of our fantastic teachers
who worked so hard throughout the day to ensure the event ran so smoothly. Thank you to all of the parents who came along to support us (and fitted kids with caps -thanks Nat & Kim). In particular, to those parents who travelled on the buses with us: Kiri, Nat and Melissa. Thank you to our starter Karl and to Nick and Justine on the results table (all from CA). Well done to the Year 3 & 4 Merton swimmers who took your house to a narrow lead over Milverton after the morning session. The final results were extremely close with only four points separating first, second and third.

Well done to everyone in Oberwyl House. However, I am sure you will agree that everyone had a great time and every swimmer was awesome!
SWIMMING TRIALS – SAVE THE DATE Swimming trials will be held for current Year 2-5 students (2016) on Friday 2nd December from 4pm - 5.00pm at Harold Hold Aquatic Centre. These trials are to gain selection to represent Hartwell PS at the Glen Iris District Swimming Carnival to be held in Term 1 2017. It is imperative that swimmers can swim 50m in their chosen stroke without stopping. Another trial will be held early in Term 1, 2017 for students who are ill, cannot make this trial due to a clash with another activity or those students who are new to the school in 2017. I have started taking student names, so please discuss this with your child if they intend to trial, and ask them to see me if they have not already done so.
HOOP TIME – STATE GRAND FINAL DAY Best wishes to our Junior All Star Boys’ Hoop Time Team, who will play in the Basketball Victoria Hoop Time State Grand Final Day next Monday at Dandenong Stadium. This is a wonderful effort and a very exciting experience for the following boys: Archie K, Ben F, Blake L, Campbell D, Christopher R, Emilio V, Jensen H, Riley M, Seb S and Xavier T. I look forward to bringing you the results next week. GO HARTWELL! Have a great week. Jo Bayes PE & Sport Co-ordinator
Can You Help Please? One of our parents – Sue King is helping a homeless woman via SMS at the moment. Sue met Sharlene on Melbourne's streets and is trying to help her get on her feet and back into society. Sue is asking if anyone in the Hartwell community preferably an iPhone 6 or 5. This would enable Sue to Face Time and won’t cost the homeless lady any money. If you can assist with this matter please see the ladies in the office who will put you in touch with Sue King.
Good Food Shop Please note that the canteen will be CLOSED on Friday 18th November due to the Fete preparations. QKR - If you wish to use the online ordering system please refer to Hartwell’s website. There is more information about the app and how to order your child’s lunch. There are also several FAQs as well as how to download the app to your mobile phone. If you have any further queries please contact the school office. Please ensure that you choose the right dates and also click on the ‘Confirm’ button as your child’s order will not come through to us if the order has not been confirmed. Helpers – We are still in need of volunteers Have you given volunteering in the GFS a try? If you have 30 minutes or an hour free on a Wednesday or Friday please consider coming in to help out. Just come along to the canteen door – you will be welcomed warmly. It is only through the assistance of volunteers that the GFS is able to function properly and we really do value your assistance. 30 minutes does make a difference.
