Delphi Connection Systems, formerly Packard-Hughes Interconnect, develops, engineersand manufactures hermaphroditic fiber optic connectors that meet the demands of harshenvironment applications.

Delphi’s hermaphroditic connectors provide superior, consistent optical performances whendeployed in the harshest environments. The connectors allow concatenations of cable assembliesto extend equipment separation without concern for connector male/female interfacecompatibility. Additionally, these connectors have “blind mating” and "scoop proofing" features toprovide easy-to-mate interconnects.

Termini — Common word used for

“Fiber Optic Contacts”

Benefits/Features:■ Available in 4, 6, and 12 channel configurations■ 4 channel connector complies to SMPTE Standard

358M-2001 for the broadcast industry■ Singlemode and multimode capabilities■ Plug-to-plug in-line cable linking system■ Full environmental sealing■ Waterproof■ Field maintainable■ Jam nut receptacle■ Utilizes field proven Delphi termini*

The hermaphroditic connectors are designed for militarymarkets, but also are configured to meet commercial marketspecifications and price competitive requirements.

Military applications include pierside and tactical field use.Commercial applications for the 4, 6 and 12 channelconnectors include broadcast equipment used in sportingevents such as the Olympics, auto racing and the SuperBowl. They are also integrated into news media centers atthe White House, international airports, and sports stadiums.

Typical Applications:■ Tactical field usage■ Broadcast■ Military pierside ■ Geophysical exploration

- Oil exploration- Mining

■ Mobile and field deployment■ Telecommunications

- Wireless base stations

Harsh Environment Hermaphroditic Product AttributesCharacteristics Hermaphroditic connectors are “genderless” and designed to allowintermating of "like connectors" used on cable assemblies. This is achievedby converting one of the cable plug connectors to a male connectorconfiguration by backing off the coupling nut to expose its male threadedend and bringing the other connector's (female configuration) coupling nutforward to thread onto the exposed male threads. This allows the cableassemblies to be deployed without concern for having a male or femaleconnector at the end of the cable.

Another benefit of the hermaphroditic connector design is that it allowsidentical cable assemblies to be concatenated as many times as needed (to be limited only by the system's opticalloss budget). This provides flexibility in the placement of the end terminals. A simple but unique wiring arrangementmust be observed when cable concatenation is used.

Special features such as EMI/RFI shielding may also be accommodated. Contact Delphi for more informationregarding these features.

Blind Mate and Scoop Proof Design FeaturesDue to application requirements, hermaphroditic connectors are often mated under adverse conditions characterizedby minimal lighting and limited access. In these situations, "blind mating" and "scoop proofing" features are critical toprovide repeatability, reliability and ease of connection without sacrificing time or imparting damage onto theconnector and termini through improper mating. These features help enable successful field application.

Typical Field Usage Design FeaturesField use connectors must withstand adverse conditions that are beyond the environmental applications typicallyendured by connectors and cable assemblies. Delphi’s hermaphroditic connectors have been designed to withstandcrush, cable tensile pull-out, cable twist, external bending moment, impact, freezing water, and many other harshfield application conditions. Additional damaging conditions include driving over the connectors with wheeled andtracked vehicles, using the connectors that protrude from shelters or panels as foot or hand holds, or applying theconnectors to wet conditions, such as freezing or saltwater.
