Robert Harris Family of Kings Nympton and Chulmleigh

Notes:- The following uses Family Tree Maker Register Report format, copied into Word and illustrations added. - It is divided into sections by generation number and their children. Move onto the next section/generation for the next level. (See contents below.) - As the prime focus is to assist interested parties in tracing their ancestors and relatives up to about the middle of the 20th century, this only documents up to the 3rd generation, including names of children if known. Information about most of the later individuals living (or potentially so) noted here, aside from names, births and marriages (where known) is generally omitted. - For security reasons, birth day and months for individuals believed to be living are omitted.

Acknowledgements:Several individuals assisted in providing the information and illustrations included in this summary, particularly Christopher Harris and Winnie Ayre, and also Ethel Headon, Frank Hueston, George Everett Mayne, Jack and Verlin Mayne, Dorothy Cuthbertson, Gwen James and others (apologies for any other names omitted).

Additions and Amendments:Comments and corrections can be sent to bemayne@gmail.com (Further pre-1950 contributions of information, photos and other illustrations would be welcomed and reviewed for potential inclusion. Notes for Robert Harris: General Notes: Birth: 1845/6 Listed as a farm labourer in 1869 and 1891 Robert lived on after his wife's death at a semi-detached cottage called "Smith's Arms" in Kings Nymton. In his old age he fashioned a seat for himself in the hedge in front of this cottage in which he would sit and take the sun. The two adjoining semi-detached cottages, of which his "Smith's Arms" was half, were later made into one and was seen at the time of writing going by its new name "Highfield".

Parish brochure cover Ann Bowden was born in 1839. She died on 06 Nov 1913. Notes for Ann Bowden: General Notes: Ann is thought to have had no occupation at the time of her nuptials. She must have been about 6 years older than her husband. She had been born in 1838 or 1839, probably in Chulmleigh, and died on 6 November 1913, aged 74, and was interred in the Kings Nympton churchyard. There is no marker over her grave.

Ann had a sister or niece named Bessie who died at the age of 2 in 1872 who is also buried in the Kings Nympton churchyard. (This information was from Winnie Ayre and likely refers to a niece - or perhaps even a daughter? Unlikely to have been a sister, as about 31 years would have separated Ann and Bessie's births.) Robert Harris and Ann Bowden married. They had the following children: 2. i. John "Jack" Harris was born on 31 Oct 1866 in Kings Nympton, South Molton District, Devon, England. He married Elizabeth Major in 1903 in Kings Nympton, South Molton District, Devon, England. He died on 05 Jul 1968 in Agincourt, Ontario, Canada. ii. William Richard Harris was born on 28 Feb 1869 in Kings Nympton, South Molton District, Devon, England. He married Thirza Major on 19 Apr 1893 in Kings Nymton, Devon, England. He died on 28 Jul 1944 in Agincourt, Ontario, Canada. iii. Charles Harris was born in 1872. He died on 16 Apr 1955. iv. Mary Ann "Polly" Harris was born in 1882. She died on 24 Mar 1947. v. James Harris was born in 1885. He died on 06 Apr 1917. Notes for James Harris: General Notes: James was a Private in the Devonshire Regiment during the First World War. He died from wounds received in action in France. There is a plaque dedicated to James and other local Kings Nympton WWI dead in the Kings Nympton parish church. James was 32 when he died in April 1917, and so would have been born in 1884 or 5.

Generation 2 Beginning with John Jack Harris born 18662. John "Jack" Harris-2 (Robert-1) was born on 31 Oct 1866 in Kings Nympton, South Molton District, Devon, England. He died on 05 Jul 1968 in Agincourt, Ontario, Canada. Notes for John "Jack" Harris: General Notes: Immigrated to Scarborough, Ontario, Canada ca. 1888 (possibly with his younger brother William who also came to Canada around this time or just after) and bought a farm before the turn of the century. He returned to Devon twice to ask for Elizabeth Major's hand in marriage and was successful on his second attempt in 1903. They returned together to his Agincourt farm in the same year. Elizabeth died in 1936. Latterly, after the sale of his farm, Jack lived with, and was looked after by, his two unmarried daughters, Hazel and Vera at 31 Lejune Road, Agincourt. Jack was active and healthy up until a great age. He retired from farming in 1944 at the age of 78. His hip healed completely after it was broken in a bowling accident when Jack was in his early nineties and he continued to enjoy gardening until he was over 95. Although his physical health continued to be good, Jack suffered from memory loss from his late nineties.

Jack's farm is now part of Metropolitan Toronto and contains a street, Harrisfarm Gate, which was named after him, and on which his great niece, Evelyn McCrudden, subsequently lived. Jack and Elizabeth had four daughters. Death: 5 July 1968 (age 101) Elizabeth Major. She died in 1936 in Agincourt, Ontario, Canada. Notes for Elizabeth Major: General Notes: Elizabeth made at least one trip back to Devon in the 1930s with her sister Thirza, and was remembered by a relative there for her beauty. Elizabeth died in 1936. Her husband Jack outlived her by more than 30 years. John "Jack" Harris and Elizabeth Major were married in 1903 in Kings Nympton, South Molton District, Devon, England.
