Designing The Monogram Murders has been an exceptional experience.

Every designer in the HarperCollinsPublishers studio was excited about the cover brief and we all came up with alternative visions and cover executions for this title. As a result we had around 60 cover visuals mounted on boards when presenting The Monogram Murders to the team.

The abundance of cover directions eased the decision process significantly. After a few weeks of developing four potential routes, the ‘hotel room’ concept was chosen. The cover below shows you my initial proposal. My intention was to communicate the eclectic Art Deco era and the dazzling hotel environment, whilst acknowledging the iconic and instantly

Books are covetable works of design as well as great works of storytelling. Here, Senior Designer Heike Schüssler discusses the inspiration and concept for The Monogram Murders cover.

recognisable figure of Hercule Poirot. Following the concept approval, we focused on the process of reducing and refining the discussed cover elements.

The cover then required the authorization of Christie’s family and of course Sophie Hannah’s approval too. Sophie was very enthusiastic about the cover and in one of her tweets she says: ‘It has proper design. It has jacket architecture!’

The cover was revealed globally on the 12th June leaving us all with bated breath for the first copies to arrive from the printers…

The bestselling novelist of all time. The world’s most famous detective.

The new Hercule Poirot novel – a murder that can only be solved by the Belgian detective.

For the first time ever, the guardians of the Christie legacy have approved a brand new novel featuring Dame Agatha’s most beloved creation, Hercule Poirot.

Bestselling author Sophie Hannah sets her thrilling tale in 1920s London, the scene of the crime taking place in the fashionable Bloxham Hotel where Poirot finds himself embroiled in a diabolically clever puzzle.

THE EMPTY THRONE---BERNARD CORNWELL

All the books in The Warrior Chronicles series have been top ten bestsellers and The Pagan Lord, the seventh book in the series, has now sold 170,000 copies in all formats. The Empty Throne continues to follow the making of England – this is an outstanding tale of a country torn apart by invasions and dynastic strife, from a master storyteller.

HEAD OF STATE ---ANDREW MARR

Andrew Marr’s first novel is a darkly comic tale of deception and skulduggery in Downing Street and Whitehall. Marr is not only the most respected, but the best-loved commentator on the current political scene. In Head of State he makes full use of his unrivalled inside knowledge to create a sparkling entertainment – a wholly original depiction of Westminster and its denizens, and a fascinating, irreverent glimpse behind the parliamentary curtain.

Introducing a major publishing event this autumn.

Hilary Mantel returns with a brilliant collection of short stories.

‘At the beginning of the year, 4th Estate put out a press release about The Assassination of Margaret Thatcher. The day after that press release was issued news stories ran in every single newspaper in the UK and over 100 newspapers in America. This is the astonishing place in which we find ourselves with Hilary right now and it is thanks to all the UK’s booksellers and the way you have sold this incredible writer over the past few years. These stories are contemporary and share an insight into the darkest recesses of the spirit. Displaying all

Alexander McCall Smith brings his wit and invention to Austen’s Emma

Prepare to meet a young woman who thinks she knows everything...

‘I enjoyed writing Emma so much – in fact, I felt bereft when I had finished it.

The real challenge, in my view, was to portray Emma in such a way that we sympathised with her, while at the same time we saw through her interfering ways. There are people like that: they have very obvious faults, but we still like them. Most of us, I imagine, have such a friend; nobody likes a complete saint.

Of course we know that Emma changes, but it

takes a bit of time, and there are casualties on the way. Yes, she is a bossy little madam, and yet … and yet … It is the ‘and yets’ that save her, just as it is the ‘and yets’ which save the rest of us.’

‘Human Universe is first and foremost a love letter to humanity; a celebration of our outrageous fortune in existing at all.

I have chosen to write my letter in the language of science, because there is no better demonstration of our magnificent ascent from dust to paragon

of animals than the exponentiation of knowledge generated by science.

Two million years ago we were Apemen. Now we are spacemen. That has happened, as far as we know, nowhere else. That is worth celebrating.’

A major new novel from the nation’s favourite storyteller.

A tale of family, war and forgiveness, in which what was once lost may sometimes be found.

Alfie and his fisherman father find a girl on an uninhabited island in the Scillies – injured, thirsty, lost… and with absolutely no memory of who she is, or how she came to be there. She can say only one word: Lucy.

Where has she come from? Is she the victim of a German U-boat, or even – as some islanders suggest – a German spy…? Only one thing is for sure: she loves music and moonlight, and it is when she listens to the gramophone that the glimmers of the girl she once was begin to appear.

WW1 is raging, suspicion and fear are growing. But as we begin to see the story of Merry, a girl boarding a great ship for a journey across the ocean, another melody enters the great symphony – and the music begins to resolve…
