Harmony Welcomes You

As the Mayor of Harmony, I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite you to come to our city and enjoy all Harmony has to offer. When I first arrived here in 1979, flags in several of the store front windows proclaimed “Harmony, The biggest little town in Southern Minnesota”.

Visitors still love our small town atmosphere and friendly people. Harmony has a thriving

business community serving residents and visitors alike. We have an active Chamber of Commerce and EDA, industrial park, and provide both business and residential incentives. Harmony has active service organizations, churches, and civic groups

who welcome you to visit them. So, if you are ever considering a move, think about “Living

in Harmony”. More than just a catchy phrase; Harmony has new housing developments and our senior independent living facility, Heritage Grove, includes assisted living and memory care apartments. Harmony can boast of the only movie theatre in Fillmore County and a Gundersen Lutheran Medical Clinic. Harmony is famous for some of the best eateries in the area. We have beautiful parks, access to the bike trail, unique gift shops, antique stores to browse and so much more.

Welcome, and enjoy your time in Harmony, Mayor Steve Donney

The staff and volunteers are eager to help you plan a pleasant tour of the community by showing you infor-mation about local businesses and attractions. Welcome to Harmony, please stop in and see us.

Attractions6 Niagara Cave is an underground wonderland, millions of years in the making. It was discovered under a sinkhole and was explored and developed over the years as local residents turned the cave into a well-known tourist attraction. Located far beneath the surface of the earth, it has a consistent temperature of 48 degrees year round. There are many aspects of the cave which make it unique including a 60-foot waterfall, a crystal wedding cha-pel, fossils and stalactites.

6 The Harmony Area Historical Society has developed a Karst geological interpretive site as an educational tool for both local residents and visitors to the area. An observation deck, with interpretive signage, will allow visitors to view a sinkhole, learn about how it was formed and why it is important to our environment.

6 Harmony-Preston Valley State Trail Over 60 Miles of paved recreational trail.

The Historical Society hosts various temporary and permanent

exhibits in the Interpretive Room at the Harmony Visitor Center. Learn about Karst Geology and how are created at the interpretive site on the

bike trail.

6 Visit the homes and farms of the Amish families living around Harmony. View fine Amish craftsmanship and purchase Amish goods, such as baked goods, baskets, wood crafts, candy, quilts and more. While traveling through the beautiful farm country, learn about the history and beliefs of the Amish community and how their lifestyle differs from modern ways, while giving us all a glimpse of how our own ancestors lived and farmed in bygone days.

6 The Amish community, consisting of over 100 families, is concentrated in the area around Canton and Harmony. The Amish Buggy Byway is a stretch of Highway 52 between Preston and Prosper with wide shoulders for buggies.

6 Slim’s Woodshed offers a variety of services for any-one interested in woodcarving. The Woodshed Museum is the largest woodcarving museum in the United States. Classes are held with popular artists throughout the year.

6 A Hobo Camp consisting of life-sized, wood-carved fig-ures is located at the trailhead park. Interpretive signage has been provided by the Harmony Area Historical Society.

City Clerk Joel Young

Chatfield City Council’s Jan-

councilor’s took the oath of

office including new councilor

Mayor Hainlen commented

that he wanted to continue to

part of the community and

looked forward to the Center

He called the Center unique to

the community. He believes a

After completing work on a

relatively light agenda, county

commissioners at their January

11 meeting again discussed the

county’s bridges. The discus-

sion was sparked by an article in

the Rochester Post Bulletin that

appeared in their January 10

issue. Commissioner Duane Bakke

said safety is the major concern.

He asked county engineer John

Grindeland if the county assess-

ment of its bridges has been done

correctly. Grindeland responded

they have been concentrating on

58 bridges which are rated 40 or

less on their sufficiency list. He

added there are over 100 bridges

on the master list rated as defi-

cient, too many to manage.

Grindeland explained that the

state consultants, that looked at

60 Fillmore County bridges last

fall and rated seven as “critical,”

used a different rating system.

The state inspectors were rating

on a structural basis where the

county rating is on a sufficiency

basis. A bridge can be rated

deficient not because it is struc-

turally unsafe, but only because

it is too narrow and unable to

accommodate large farm equip-

ment, for example. These bridg-

es are deficient because they are

obsolete not necessarily because

they are structurally unsound.

The structural rating provides a

second tool with which to rate

the bridges. The structural rat-

ing had to be made by a struc-

tural engineer. Bakke said we have our rat-

Six transfers of funds were

a portion of the infusion of

$90,000 to be made each year

to satisfy the recent debt refi-
