Harmony Day 2019

Harmony Day is celebrated in Australia, to acknowledge the cultural diversity in our country. It coincides with the United Nation’s “International Day”, which works towards the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. We come together to embrace all cultures and to celebrate with each other. Our Harmony Day Assembly showcased several examples of diversity. We experienced the Japanese Taiko-on Drummers, watched a Judo exhibition from the Kano Judo School, heard the Year 7 Japanese students pray the sign of the cross in Japanese and the Hail Mary prayed in French by our senior French students. Brother Olly and Beppie, from Wheelchairs for Kids thanked our students and staff for our support. Our College has supported this wonderful organisation for many years and this is a very real way of creating harmony, by helping those less fortunate than ourselves.

It was wonderful to see the whole College come together for Harmony Day. For a gold coin donation to Wheelchairs for Kids, staff and students dressed in their cultural dress or showing their cultural heritage, or in the colour orange, the official colour of Harmony Day. Many also enjoyed the staff versus students’ basketball and the football matches at lunch time.

Year 7 Presentation about Sr Irene McCormack

On Wednesday, 20th March the Year 7 students were fortunate to have Irene’s sister, Bernadette McCormack, and Sister Frances come to speak with them. They told first-hand accounts of their memories of Irene, and shared pictures of where Irene worked in Peru, as well as her childhood and years teaching in Perth. The Year 7 students then shared morning tea with their special guests and had a chance to ask questions and buy Peruvian souvenirs, with proceeds going to the Sisters of St Joseph. Ms Francesca Christie Head of Religious Education

Open Day The College had a wonderful Open Day on Wednesday, 20th March, with over 110 visitors for our two tours.

A feature of the tours was that future students and their families were able to witness the College on a normal school day. Each of the tour groups were hosted by a junior and senior student and staff member. Our visitors appreciated the opportunity to meet teachers and students in the class setting and were impressed by the excellent standard of student courtesy and manner. We thank all staff and students for the conduct of the day and in particular Mrs Michelle Smith, our Assistant Deputy Principal Year 11 for her organisation, and Mrs Wendy Duncan and her team for arrangement of morning and afternoon tea, Miss Kylie Malam, our Head of Performing Arts, and the members of the College Jazz Ensemble for the entertainment, as well as our grounds and maintenance staff for always having the grounds and buildings presented excellently.

Sounds at Sunset The first music concert of the year, Sounds at Sunset, will be held next week on Thursday, 28th March in the College Undercroft. Pre-concert dance and DJ entertainment will start at 6.00pm, with a BBQ and refreshments available. The concert will start at 6.30pm. Tickets are available from the Performing Arts Office for $2 each. We look forward to seeing many of you in the audience to support our young musicians. Ms Kylie Malam Head of Performing Arts

Year 8 Science Course 3 and Extension Solar Car Challenge Races Over the past five weeks Year 8 Extension and Course 3 Science students have been working hard investigating the different variables that affect the speed of a solar car. They built their solar cars and then tested different variables one by one, to come up with a design to make their solar car as fast as possible. Each of the four classes then had a race tournament to see which team had the fastest solar car.

Year 10 Social Science Courage To Care Excursions All Year 10 Social Science classes attended the Courage to Care exhibition at ECU Mt Lawley as part of their studies of World War Two in History. Courage to Care is an education program that transforms bystander behaviour by using the Holocaust as a medium to explore racism, prejudice, discrimination and bullying, and to highlight the acts of upstanders, the ‘Righteous Among the Nations’ (those men and women who risked their own lives to save others) and the heroes of other genocides whose courage saved lives.

By highlighting the importance of standing up to bullying and prejudice whenever it occurs, Courage to Care empowers and inspires participants to take positive action, to be upstanders rather than bystanders to discrimination in all forms. Mrs Adele Baker Head of Social Sciences

French Breakfast 18th March 2019

On Monday, 18th March our Year 7 French class took part in a French Breakfast as part of their French lesson. We learned and memorised how to order the correct breakfast food items in French. Once we had successfully ordered our food we were able to enjoy eating it. The students enjoyed a delicious cheese and ham croissant, chocolate profiteroles and orange juice. Miam miam (yum yum). The students said the following sentence clearly and correctly: J'aimerais un croissant, un profitérole et un jus d'orange. S'il-vous-plaît, merci. I would like a croissant, a profiterole and an orange juice. Please, thank you. Thank you Mademoiselle Harrison for a fun French lesson Noah Parry, Year 7 Student

Senior French Excursion Students from the Years 10-12 French classes had the wonderful opportunity to immerse themselves in French film and culture. On our excursion to the Paradiso Cinema in Northbridge, we attended the Première of the French Film Festival to see “Au bout des doigts” (at your finger tips). It was a touching story of a young man raised in a disadvantaged suburb in France, who is given an opportunity to pursue his dreams in classical piano and is chosen to compete in a grand international music competition. After the movie we enjoyed a delicious lunch at a French salon de thé Café Paris in Perth city and practised our oral skills by ordering lunch in French before conversing in French with other students. Thank you to Mademoiselle Harrison and Madame Tolefe for a great day that we have all enjoyed. Amy Bester and Taonashe Pachawo, Year 12 students

Dance All dance try-outs have concluded and the successful students have been announced for this year’s Dance teams and Hurricanes Cheerleading team. The Hurricanes have already started training for their first competition, learning elite stunts with their coach.

Class of 2018 graduate, Eve Basson is our Junior Dance Team choreographer. Eve is creating a dance for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival about how a simple act of kindness can go a long way. Students will be reflecting on how this is true in their own lives, which will then form the inspiration for the piece. Class of 2017 graduate, Zarlie Stubbs, is choreographing our new Lyrical Dance Team. The team consists of elite dancers from Years 7-10 who will compete at two competitions this year. Her contemporary dance is inspired by the issues of disconnection that technology brings, specifically, how many people today are ‘glued’ to their phones and often miss what is happening in the world around them.

Dance Calendar Change Choreography Night which was scheduled for Wednesday,10th April in Week 10 this term, will no longer take place. Dance Night is going ahead as planned on 25th September, in Week 10, Term 3. All students in Years 8-12 Dance, as well as all extra-curricular teams, will perform on the night. Miss Sinead Harte Dance Teacher

Year 9 Photography Excursion

On Wednesday, 13th March, Mr Speechley and Ms Schneider’s Year 9 Photography classes had their first outing to Jindalee Beach. Each class spent two periods at the coastal location, creatively photographing the landscape and attempting to see things with a new perspective. Each student had a scavenger hunt style list, changing to a new set of shots every 15 minutes. Students were required to find examples of leading line, rule of thirds and depth of field, as well as searching for objects or parts of nature that shared a resemblance to letters of the alphabet. The photos taken will be used to complete the current ‘Photobet’ Project students are working on, whilst the landscape photos will be part of the second assessment task for the term. We were lucky that the day held very pleasant weather, allowing students to utilise the time well to capture a large array of shots.

Navigating the Maze of High School Wednesday, 8th May As promoted during the recent Parent Information Evenings, Mr Billingsley and Ms Tonkin will be running two sessions at:

• 1pm-1.30pm, after students are dismissed and during staff lunch break before the Parent Teacher Interviews. Students can have a lunch break on the grass outside the PRC.

• 5pm-5.30pm, the repeat session is during the staff dinner break of the Parent Teacher Interviews.

These sessions are aimed at families who are new or unfamiliar with the current WA education system. Parents may be from a different country of origin and this is your first experience of high school in Australia, or parents may be unsure about how some aspects of high school within Western Australia have changed since they attended school. These informal sessions aim to try to help parents understand the high school system within Australia and highlight any areas of difference from other countries in the world. Families of Year 7-9 students who may be the first in family to go onto TAFE or University are also invited to attend. If you would like to attend, please contact [email protected]. Please include any specific areas of high school that you would like to be discussed and the number of seats required.

Career Carousel and Expo Wednesday, 8th May This year parents and students will be able to select from several presentations by Universities, TAFE and Industry before, during and after the Career Expo. The session prior to the expo at 1.30pm will be a combined universities presentation – An Overview of the WA University System. This will be followed at 2pm by An Introduction to TAFE. Both these sessions are aimed at families new or unfamiliar with post school education and training pathways, and parents with students in the younger years, especially Year 10. Defence, Construction Training Fund and individual university short presentations for senior students, will also run during the afternoon. More details to come. The main Career Expo will run from 2pm-4pm. Mr Andrew Billingsley Deputy Principal
