HARMONY ARTS FESTIVAL 2016

Mayor’sWelcome Each summer during the Harmony Arts Festival, our community throws open its doors and invites everyone to come experience a celebration of the arts. Enjoy the patio season with breathtaking views and entertainment for the whole family on West Vancouver’s waterfront.

Our 26th annual festival brings ten days of art exhibits, art markets, musical performances, outdoor movies, kids’ activities, culinary arts experiences, art workshops and much more.

High-quality art will fi ll Argyle Avenue for two weekends of Art Market shopping, complimented by a new mid-week exhibition showcasing art photography. The Art of Photography will take place Tuesday, August 2 to Thursday, August 4.

Also new this year is the Marina Club, offering food and beverages on the beach at Ambleside Landing (at the foot of 14th Street). Check it out – the music is sure to inspire dancing.

As they do every year, visitors of all ages can savour summertime eats and enjoy all of the sights and sounds of Harmony from the lounge space at Millennium Park.

I encourage visitors to take public transit, walk or bike to the festival. Boaters are invited to sail to the celebration and stop at the Pop-up Marina and Club 25 at Ambleside Pier. Temporary moorage will be available for the duration of the festival, complete with a boat to shore valet dinghy service.

I’d like to extend my thanks to Odlum Brown Limited for their continued support as our festival’s presenting sponsor as they have been for the past 15 years. The generous support of sponsors, suppliers and many local businesses is key to the success of the festival and to attracting visitors year after year.

I would also like to thank the over 200 volunteers for their time, enthusiasm and commitment. These countless volunteer hours support staff in making this a great event and we appreciate the contribution and dedication.

Come and experience the many ways West Vancouver celebrates the arts. We look forward to seeing you on the waterfront at Harmony Arts!

Mayor Michael Smith

West Vancouver artist Joan Balzar (November 8, 1928 – January 16, 2016)was an important fi gure in the development of abstract painting on the West Coast. She was known for her vividly coloured hard-edged abstract paintings and experiments with neon light and vibrant colours. She tested the limits of the canvas in her large-scale abstract works.

Through her exploration of colour and its relation to scale and perception Joan’s expressive paintings of the 1960s were a response to the new space age. Joan also found inspiration in Vancouver’s neon street signs, which she called “jewels of the night.”

Joan Balzar’s work can be found in public and private collections in Canada and in the United States, including the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Morris and Helen Belkin Art Gallery at The University of British Columbia, the West Vancouver Museum, Simon Fraser University and the Seattle Art Museum.

DIALOGUEPUBLIC ART INSTALLATION

The new public art installation on the waterfront, Dialogue, consists of a grouping of rough-cut marble stones surrounding a fi nished piece by noted sculptor Joan Matthews (Brandvold) Gambioli (1920-1985), generously donated to the community by Nora Gambioli. The arrangement is a dialogue between the quarried marble stones imported from Carrara, Italy, and the round local boulders placed at the water’s edge.

Sculptor Michael Binkley, noted for creating monumental fi gurative, wildlife and abstract pieces in stone, will be on site to fi nish and polish a few surfaces of this remarkable material to highlight the natural beauty of the marble stones and complete the installation.
