2 FALL 2012

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Fall brings not only the start of a new academic year but the excitement of new projects and accomplishments. I am proud of our faculty, staff and students for all of their hard work in continuing to make HCC great. Throughout this issue of Harford, you will get a glimpse of what’s to come, but I would like to offer some highlights from recent months.

The newly renovated Susquehanna Center has

reopened to students and the community. Along with the Center’s state-of-the-art classrooms and fi tness facilities, we are proud to have added the world class APG Federal Credit Union Arena, the largest arena in northeastern Maryland. This will be the new home of the Fighting Owls basketball and volleyball teams.

It is with true appreciation that I acknowledge the very generous gift of $150,000 from Dixie Construction. The fi tness center in the Susquehanna Center will be named in their honor. Diane Dixon, CEO, David Dixon, General Manager, and Shawn Pyle, President of Dixie Construction, felt strongly about supporting the College through this named gift. The Dixons are HCC alumni, and we applaud their commitment to the College and the community. Our alumni are one of the College’s greatest assets, and your continued support is invaluable.

The College has also been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance 2-Year Education by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Industry and professional associations recognize this highly regarded designation as the pinnacle for quality in information assurance and cybersecurity programs.

Finally, I would like to welcome Fredrick “Rick” Johnson, our new Vice President for Finance and Operations. Rick brings a wealth of experience to the College. Most recently he served as the Vice President and Chief Financial Offi cer for the University of Arizona Alumni Association.

I hope that you will pay us a visit to see for yourself all of the wonderful changes that are happening on campus.

Sincerely,

Dennis Golladay, Ph.D.President

From the President

LET THE GAMES BEGINThe newly renovated Susquehanna Center opened its doors in time for the start of the fall semester. The project doubled the size of the original building, adding increased opportunities for credit and continuing education learning and fi tness.

Renovation highlights include a larger fi tness center, modernized pool, and additional rooms for dance and group exercise courses.

The fi nal piece, the addition of the new APG Federal Credit Union Arena, will be complete in November. The arena has a total capacity of 3,300 seats. In addition to being the new home of the Fighting Owls basketball and volleyball teams, the arena will provide the community with a state-of-the-art venue for concerts, conferences, and events.

“The APG Federal Credit Union Arena will be the largest indoor venue in Northeastern Maryland. We are excited about the opportunities it will bring for the College and our students, and it will be a fantastic resource for the community to enjoy as well,” said Brenda Morrison, Vice President of Marketing, Development and Community Relations. “We look forward to showcasing all the new space has to offer during our Family Fun Fest on January 12.”

1991Courtney (Kraemer) Bond, General Studies, is Director of Talent Acquisition for Under Armour.

2003Joni B., ComputerScience, works as a Confi guration Manager/Controller for the United States Government.

Kristianna (Cooper) Simon, General Studies, married Luke Simon in July 2011. Kristianna is a nurse in the cardiac intensive care unit at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Luke is a geometry teacher at Landsdowne High School in Linthicum, Maryland.

Chris Wieners, is Managing Director at Hogo Digital Limited, a marketing consulting company with offi ces in Macau, Hong Kong, and Shanghai.

For Cynthia Gundersen (‘87), what started as a childhood interest in building and fi guring out how things work has grown into a career that has put her work on Mars.

Cynthia credits HCC with providing a great introduction to engineering and helping confi rm her career interests.

“When I started my engineering courses, I couldn’t decide whether to pursue mechanical or chemical engineering. One of my professors shared that mechanical engineering was a wide-open fi eld of things to do. He was right.”

Upon graduating from HCC with a degree in engineering, Cynthia received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering. During that time, she was hired by NASA to work on spacefl ight instrumentation.

In 2002, Cynthia started AMU Engineering, Inc. Soon after, she worked with a science group at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center to develop a proposal for an instrument suite to be part of the next Mars Rover mission. The instrument group was part of the winning proposal team, and AMU Engineering received a contract to provide the mass spectrometer and gas processing system mechanical component and assembly designs for the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite.

SAM launched in the belly of the Curiosity rover on board an Atlas V rocket in November 2011. The rover successfully landed on Mars on August 5, 2012, and will spend the next two years collecting evidence about whether life has ever existed on the planet. SAM will handle and process all of the samples of Martian rocks, soil and atmosphere.

Knowing that her original mechanical design is successfully working on Mars is an incredible feeling. “I’ve worked on spacefl ight instrumentation since 1991, but this is the most exciting mission I’ve been part of,” she said.

Professionally, Cynthia considers starting her own business to be her greatest accomplishment. “My business was 10-years-old in September, and I know that I hit the 10-year mark because of hard work, perseverance and good business decisions. It’s been a great journey.”

WE GROW OUR OWN Nursing Alumni Return to Campus as Clinical Faculty

“We Grow Our Own”– a popular phrase among nursing programs in an age of chronic nursing shortages – illustrates how a school should look no further than its former students to help foster and strengthen the profession.

This is particularly true of our own nursing program. For the fall semester, 10 nursing alumni have returned to campus as clinical faculty to share their knowledge and experience.

“Having our alumni return as faculty members is wonderful. The insight they provide enriches the nursing program, and it shows a true dedication to the College and their profession,” Laura Cianelli Preston, Dean of the Nursing and Allied Health Professions, said.

The clinical experience provides a hands-on opportunity for students to apply what they have learned in the classroom to patient care. For Susan Holian (‘96), this means helping her students obtain a sense of what it means to be a professional nurse in healthcare today.

“I hope to encourage my students to develop the spirit of inquiry and the courage to grow and develop with advanced nursing education and someday make a difference for the nursing profession,” she said.

While completing her RN-to-BSN program, Susan was challenged with the question of how she could make a difference for nursing, and the choice was an easy one – return to HCC and teach.

“My fi rst thought was to return to my nursing roots and to give back to Harford Community College and the nursing program that is the foundation of my career,” she said. “What better way to accomplish this than to teach my profession to future nurses?”
