Lesson 1

MARK 1:29–45

“Wahoo!” shoutedDavid. “That was fun! What happened?”Rocking more and more

slowly, the time machine recov-ered from the jolt that startled the boys. And yes, itstartled me, Rocky, too—but only a little. After coasting gradually to a stop, the time machine

doors opened. Fresh air and bright sunlight flooded in.This time Andy had the Mo-D, while Eli and Davidlooked around. They set the costume cloaker whenAndy said they were in Capernaum. Not far off in thedistance, Jesus and some other people were leaving asynagogue. We hurried to catch up. The crowd followed James

and John to the house of Simon Peter andAndrew.Weheard the people talking about what was happening.Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, andthe disciples were telling Jesus about her. When wereached the house, we peeked in as Jesus went to thewoman. Reaching out His hand, He took hers andhelped her up. Suddenly, she was fine. Her fever lefther, and she began to wait on everyone.Well, news like that travels fast. As we walked

through the city that day, we heard again and againhow Jesus healed Simon’s mother-in-law. Thatevening after sunset the people brought all the sickand demon-possessed people to Jesus. The wholetown gathered at the door. Jesus healed the people. Healso drove out demons, but He told the demons not tospeak because they knew who He was. When we woke up the next day, Jesus was gone.

“Where’s Jesus?” exclaimed David. “We have to findHim!”“Relax, David,” said Eli calmly. “He’s around here

somewhere.”“There goes Simon to look for Him. We’re going

with him. Come on,” ordered Andy.We followed Simon and the others with him around

Capernaum. When they finally found Jesus, theyexclaimed, “Everyone is looking for You.” I barked inagreement.Jesus said that He wanted to go to the nearby vil-

lages and preach. “That is why I have come,” Heexplained. So we followed as He traveled throughout Galilee,

teaching in synagogues and driving out demons. Itwas a lot of walking, but we stuck with the group.A man with leprosy came to Jesus. The leper got

down on his knees and begged Jesus, “IfYou are will-ing, You can make me clean.”“I am willing,” said Jesus. “Be clean.” The man was

healed right away.Eli got a big smile on his face. David andAndy just

stared, wide-eyed. I couldn’t help but wag my tail.Jesus told the man not to tell anyone what had hap-pened, but to go and show the priest and offer sacri-fices as a testimony. Instead, the man went out andspoke freely, spreading the news. Jesus’ power oversickness and demons became so widely known thatHe could no longer enter into any towns. He stayed inlonely places from then on, but people still came toHim from everywhere.

You can sometimes feel a little mixed up when you travel from the present to the past again and again.See if you can unscramble the words below.

1. SESAIDE (a sickness)

2. PEERL (a person with a skin problem)

3. YNDA (one of the boys)

4. MENOD (something evil)

5. SSNMIOCAPO (caring for someone, like love)

6. REUDC (healed)

2MARK 6:30–44; 8:1–10

“How much longer till weget there?” asked David.“Like we know,” answered

Andy.Once we landed, David got his

chance to read the Mo-D locater passage first. Andyfound Jesus on the time screen.“Jesus and the disciples are getting into a boat.

We’ve got to catch them!” Andy said. He pointed tothe sea where the men were leaving shore. On landpeople watched Jesus, pointed, and began runningalong the edge of the water.“Quick, costume cloaker,” Eli yelled and grabbed

the Bible.David set the Mo-D as they ran out the doors to the

shore. “Where are they all going?” shouted David.“They’re running along the shore to beat Jesus and

the disciples to where they’re going,” Eli said.“Let’s catch up” Andy said.I love a good run. What dog doesn’t? We joined the

crowd running past the coastal towns, and the newsspread about Jesus. After a while, we arrived at a place where Jesus had

taken His disciples to rest. But you could see the com-passion in His eyes when He started teaching manythings that evening. We found a place at the frontwhere we could hear everything. It was getting late, and the disciples asked Jesus to send the people awayso they could get something to eat. But He answered,“You give them something to eat.”

The disciples didn’t understand. They didn’t haveenough money to feed everyone. Jesus simply asked,“How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”David watched as the disciples counted. He said,

“They have just five loaves of bread and two fish.”Eli just smiled as Jesus told the disciples to have

the more than five thousand people sit in groups. Wewatched as Jesus lifted the food to heaven, givingthanks. Then He broke the loaves and fish and the dis-ciples handed them out to all of us. When we had fin-ished eating, the disciples collected twelve basketfulsof broken pieces of bread and fish.A few days later, we joined another large crowd,

and Jesus had compassion for us again. We had beenthere for three days with nothing to eat. Jesus said, “IfI send them home hungry, they will collapse along theway, because some of them have come a long dis-tance.” That was sure true in our case. Jesus asked thedisciples, “How many loaves do you have?”“Seven,” they replied.Jesus took the loaves and gave thanks. Then He

broke the bread and some small fish. Again we all ateuntil we were full. This time the disciples collectedseven basketfuls of broken pieces afterward.“How was it possible to feed all these people with

so little food?” asked David. “I didn’t know that Jesusdid that more than one time.”Jesus got into a boat and left for another town.

“With God,” Eli said quietly, “all things are possible.”

Lesson 2

In our story we ate bread and fish, but the Bible says that we live on the Word of God. It’s like food forour souls. The following sentences about the story are incorrect. Use the story and your Bible to rewrite thesentences so that they are full of God’s truth.

1. Jesus taught the people many things after feeding them.

2. Thousands of people followed Jesus in boats.

3. Jesus sent the people away to get something to eat.

4. The first time, Jesus fed the people with five thousand loaves and fish.

5. The second time, the disciples collected eight basketfuls of broken pieces.

3 MARK 10:35–45

I’m Rocky, and I’ll keepyou up to speed on what’shappening as David, Andy,

Eli, and I continue our adven-tures through time. Speaking of

speed, as the years blur by us outside the timemachine, I prepare to slow down from our hyper-flight back in time. We step out of the time machineto find ourselves near Jerusalem almost two thousandyears ago.David, excited but nervous from the ride, said, “I

love it when we land. But where are we? And whenare we?”“Well,” pointed out Andy, “there’s Jesus over there

with the disciples.”Eli seemed excited after reading the Mo-D passage.

“Look! Two of the disciples are about to speak withJesus. They are probably James and John. Let’s go!”And off we went at a trot. People and their two legs—they walk so slowly. I reached Jesus and the others afew seconds before the boys, and we sat on the groundamong the disciples to listen.John and James came to Jesus and told Him that

they wanted Him to do whatever they asked. “Whatdo you want Me to do for you?” He asked.David whispered to Eli, “What do James and John

want?”Eli said, “Just wait. This’ll be good.” We listened as

John and his brother asked Jesus to allow them to sit

on His left and right side in His glory. Jesus told themthat they didn’t know what they were asking. Then Heasked them whether they could drink the cup that Hedrinks or be baptized with the baptism that He is bap-tized with.Andy confidently whispered to us, “I can.”A moment later, John and James answered Jesus,

“We can.”Jesus said to them, “You will drink the cup I drink

and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they havebeen prepared” (10:39,40). Sitting next to Eli, I sawhim smiling and nodding his head. So I wagged mytail. Jesus continued, “Whoever wants to becomegreat among you must be your servant, and whoeverwants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Sonof Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and togive his life as a ransom for many” (10:43–45).Andy looked down, a little embarrassed that he had

shared the same thoughts that John and James had.David was excited. “So we’re supposed to put other

people’s needs first. We’re supposed to serve themand not think so much about ourselves all the time, right?”Eli chuckled, “Yes, that’s it. Andy, don’t be so hard

on yourself. Even John and James were humbled. Butthey both became great men of God. You will too.”Well, we had a blast in the past, as usual.

Lesson 3

Can you answer these questions about what happened this time?

1. Which two disciples spoke to Jesus?

2. What did they ask Jesus to do for them?

3. What was His answer?

4. Did Jesus say we should be served if we believe in Him? Explain your answer.

5. What are three ways that you can be a servant to others?

4MARK 15:21–41

We have landed at thecrucifixion of Christ, andthe boys are debating about

who is going to see it.“I don’t know if I want to see it

again,” said David. “It was a really bad time in Jesus’life. It scared me a little.”Eli looked serious. “It was hard to watch, David,”

he said. “Crucifixion was a horrible way to die. TheRomans saved it for the worst criminals of all. ButAndy’s right too. Jesus took on the sins of the worldand decided to die on the cross for us. There’s nogreater love than that.”“So what do you think, David?” asked Andy. “Do

you want to go get answers with us? You might seesomething different this time.”“I guess you guys are right,” David admitted. “I’ll

go, but it still scares me a little. Maybe Rocky willstick close to me.”As we neared Jerusalem, we heard a sound like a

large crowd at a baseball game. People were cheeringloudly, but this sound wasn’t good. It was angry. As wegot closer to it, we realized it was the disorder andshouting of an angry mob. The crowd yelled hatefulthings from each side of the street. In the middle of themwe saw Jesus, our Lord, bloodied, beaten, and tired. Hewas being led to His death. The boys tried to keep fromcrying when Jesus fell under the weight of the cross. The Roman soldiers saw a large man, Simon from

Cyrene, in the crowd. His legs brushed forcefullyagainst my fur as they pulled him into the street. They

forced him to carry Jesus’ cross. They brought Jesusto the place called Golgotha (which means the “Placeof the Skull”). Then they crucified Him. It was aboutnine o’clock in the morning. Sadly, we looked up atChrist on the cross. Jesus hung there between two rob-bers, bloody, bruised, and dirty. The boys started toget angry when the people below started shouting atJesus. “Come down from the cross and save your-self!” they taunted.“He saved others, but He can’t save himself!” the

chief priests and teachers taunted. The two men cruci-fied with Jesus insulted Him too.At around noon, darkness fell across the land, and

Jesus shouted, “My God, My God, why have You for-saken Me?”David covered his tear-streaked face as Jesus gave

a loud cry and died. Eli and Andy put their hands onDavid’s shoulders, tears running down their faces.Someone reported that the curtain in the temple hadbeen torn in two from top to bottom. A Roman offi-cer, hearing how Jesus had cried out and seeing howHe had died, said, “Surely this man was the Son ofGod.”“Come on, guys,” Andy said quietly. “Let’s go back.”He and Eli helped David down from the hill at

Golgotha. The boys wiped tears from their eyes as wewalked slowly and quietly back to the time machine, passing a group of sad women. They had watched thecrucifixion from a distance. We had seen them inGalilee before, caring for Jesus’ needs. But we were alltoo sad to say anything. We had a lot to think about.

Lesson 4

5 MARK 16:1–13

“Guys,” said Eli, “Iknow that it was hard forus to see what we did at the

crucifixion, but the ending tothe story is a happy one.”

“Well, I was not happy to see my Lord crucifiedagain. Remember the hateful things that people weresaying? I’m not so sure I want to travel through timeanymore,” said David.Andy told him that was tough, there was no way out.“Settle down, guys,” said Eli. “We all had it pretty

rough back there at the crucifixion. But there’s a reasonthe gospel is called the good news.” Eli quickly read thelocater verses, Mark 16:1–13. “You’ll want to come thistime, but we’re going to have to keep hidden.”We quickly followed some women walking down

the road. We got as close as we could to the women.Hiding behind some trees, we saw that they were car-rying jars. “What is in those big jars?” asked David.“Those are spices they’re planning to use to anoint

Jesus’ body. Only I don’t think they will do muchanointing today. Watch,” answered Eli.One of the women said, “Who will roll the stone

away from the entrance of the tomb?” But when theylooked up, they saw that the stone had already beenrolled away. The women entered the tomb.“Come on,” Andy said. “Time to get a closer look.”We peeked into the tomb and saw that there was a

man sitting on the right. He was dressed in white, andthe women seemed afraid.“Don’t be afraid,” he said. “You are looking for

Jesus, the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has

risen!” I wagged all over. The man told the women totell the good news to the disciples and Peter. He saidthat Jesus would go ahead of them into Galilee.Well, I knew where we were headed. Even before

the women fled the tomb, trembling, afraid, andmixed up, we were on our way to Galilee. Before weknew it, people started reporting that they had seenthe risen Jesus. When He rose on the first day of theweek, He went and saw Mary Magdalene. We heardher story when she told it to the others who had beencrying for Jesus, but they didn’t believe her. Later weheard other reports. Two people had been walking inthe country when Jesus appeared in a different form.Although they returned and reported it to the rest, noone believed them either.“What’s going on?” asked David. “I don’t under-

stand why no one believes.”“It’s hard to lose someone that you love so much,”

explained Eli, “and then try to believe that He’s notreally dead. Sometimes when a person dies, closefamily and friends go into shock. They don’t believethe person is really dead. Maybe the others think thestories are something like that. They don’t want tohope Jesus is alive again, in case they are wrong.”“But that’s what this is all about,” addedAndy. “Jesus

did conquer death, and He rose on the third day.”David’s face lit up. “And since Jesus died for our sins,”

he said, grinning, “He conquered death for us too.”“Awesome, isn’t it?” said Eli. “We have eternal life

in heaven with Jesus.”At that, I did bark. Owowowooo!
