Dashain Sheela Malakar First published September 2002 FNA Newsletter.

A s the season of fall approaches, one of Nepal’s most auspicious and longest festivals takes

place, Dashain. Occurring around September and October, it’s one of the most widely spread holidays celebrated in every household of every caste. For fifteen days the goddess Durga, in her many forms, are worshipped with countless pujas, several offer-ings and thousands of animal sacrifices for her cus-tom sacred bathing soaked in blood. Dashain recognizes the grand victory of the gods over the demons. One victorious story was revealed by Ramayan, where Lord Ram after much attempt murdered Ravana, the wicked king of demons. How-ever, he was only triumphant in the battle when god-dess Durga was brought to his attention. The main celebration honors the conquest of good over evil and is signified by goddess Durga killing the dread-ful demon, Mahisasur, who threatened the earth in the appearance of a vicious water buffalo. The fero-cious battle between goddess Durga and the demon Mahisasur lasted for nine days and therefore is rep-resented during the first nine days of the festival. The tenth day signifies the day when Mahisasur was slain. The last five days symbolizes the celebration with the blessing of the goddess, who is now con-tinuously worshipped through out the kingdom as the divine mother goddess. In preparation for Dashain, homes are cleansed and decorated in return for the blessing and good fortune from the goddess Durga. Throughout the fifteen day celebration all organizations are closed and labor is almost impossible to find. From the poor to the rich all enjoy a festive atmosphere. The market is filled with ones buying gifts and offerings for the gods as well as family, as they meet both their near and dis-tant relatives. Family gatherings are emphasized on the tenth day, Dashami. It is this day that one takes tika and jamara from their elders receiving their blessings as well carrying on for the next four days. Dashain ends on the fifteenth day when the goddess of wealth, Laxmi, is worshipped. On this day every-one stays home and rest as the goddess Laxmi is asked to visit each and everyone.

Tihar Panchak Yama; the five days of the under-world lord. Asha Malakar First published September 2002 FNA Newsletter.

O f all Hindu festivals, one of the most well known is Tihar (Diwali), the festival of lights.

Through this festival we worship Goddess Laxmi, the Goddess of wealth. This festival lasts five days and begins with the thirteenth day of the waning moon in October. Here is a short story to reason why this festival is celebrated so widely. An astrologer told a king who was living his last days of life that a ser-pent would take his remaining life from him. Since the king didn’t want to die, he asked the astrologer if there was any way he could avoid his death. In re-turn the astrologer recommended him to sleep with lit oil lamps close to his bed and to furnish his palace with oil lamps on Laxmi puja day. Therefore the Goddess Laxmi convinced the serpent to not take his life. The serpent told Yama Raj that it wasn’t yet time for the king to join the underworld. Therefore Yama Raj opened his ledger where the king’s age left was at zero; however the serpent cunningly put a seven before the zero which left the king for seventy more years to live. Thus Tihar is celebrated worship-ping both the underworld and the Goddess Laxmi. The final day of Tihar is ‘Bhai Tika’ where brothers receive tika by their sisters. A royal astrologer an-nounces through the national radio one day in ad-vanced a suitable time to put the tika where the entire nation follows it. The king also receives tika from his sisters where once he receives tika a gun salute is given to tribute the occasion. The most important reason for Bhai tika is that sisters pray for their brother’s long life from god of the underworld, Yama Raj.

viduals/organizations can do to help the clinic, which is serv-ing poor people very effectively. Nepal Study Forum brought in a speaker to share her experience in Nepal. We had a great time camping at Blue Spring State Park as part of our Nepali New Year’s (B.S. 2061) picnic in Orange city. We need to do such activities more often. We raised fund to help Samrita Lo-hani in her attempt to get kidney transplant. All Nepali com-munity extended hands in supporting for the good cause, thank you all for that. We sponsored a week long visit of Acharya Khem Raj “Keshava Sharan” to south Florida. Nepali families in south Florida sponsored four students studying in his Ash-ram at Deoghat, Nepal. He gave several discourses to the Hindu community of south Florida during his brief stay.

We all read on the papers everyday that peace in Ne-

pal has been trodden by various power plays in the country. We only can hope that peace be restored in the country and a democratic governance will resume soon. We denounce the barbaric killing of 12 innocent Nepali workers in Iraq by the extremists. May Durga Bhavani help bring peace to the people of Nepal.

Now, it is the time that we all are waiting for - the biggest festival of the Hindus, Dashain. It is also time for all Floridians to gather at one place and exchange happy greetings and goddess Durga’s blessings to one another. This year, as you all know, we will be celebrating Dashain in West Palm Beach on Saturday, October 30, 2004. We are preparing the event with various programs and the highlight will be to watch the new talents. Few of the programs that will bring interesting features are Nepal Study Forum that Archana Kattel is coordi-nating to bring our youth together to share their growing ex-periences. Jeevan Joshi, our cultural program coordinator is compiling list of songs and dances among other items for the cultural program that evening. If you have not already submit-ted your item please do send it to Jeevan as soon as you can so that you will not miss your opportunity to perform. For details of the programs and hotel accommodations please see inside of this newsletter and on FNA website.

This is my last president’s message and the occasion,

my last chance to welcome you to the FNA event as president. I am stepping down after completion of my two year term of presidency and wish good luck to the incoming president and the executive committee. If you have any questions about an-nual celebration/program please call me at 561-792-7772 or write to [email protected]. Please check our website http://www.floridanepal.org for recent updates.. My heartiest thanks to you all for your help and cooperation during my tenure of presidency, especially to my wife Archana.

Thank you and May Goddess Durga bless you all for prosperity and happiness.
