“Serving Together A Risen Savior”
Dear Church Family,
The greeting, “Dear Church Family,” is much more than a customary phrase of introduction for me. I am truly blessed to count you all as “family.” Have you ever stopped to realize just how very special it is to belong to a church family? For me, there is great comfort, peace, and encouragement in this reality.
As the family of Jesus Christ at Central, we are blessed to rejoice when others rejoice; we also weep when others weep. You see, being a part of a family reminds us that we are all in this Christian journey together. God has given us the gift of His church so that we might truly learn what to do when the roads of many lives intersect. I pray that He is pleased with the way in which His body at Central acts and reacts. I once heard a good definition of our neighbor as “anyone who traffics through the turf of our lives.”
I encourage you all to be a joyful Christian to others in our church family and outside our church family. God made us all unique and different but the common bond of His Son, Jesus Christ, allows us to all become one and earnestly come to learn what it means to “care for one another.”
Paul reminds us in Scripture:
“Bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ.” Galatians 6:2
Jesus said to us in Scripture:
“A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.” John 13:34
May God continue to richly bless you and warm your heart through the family we have at Central Baptist Church.
In Him,
Bro. Bryan
Growing up, I celebrated two wonderful days in May. First was Mother’s Day. Mom’s rock! When I think of mothers, I think of selfless labors, acts of love, and sacrificial giving. I really don’t see how Mom did everything when I was growing up. She worked as a teacher, cooked every meal, cleaned, washed, taught at church, and attended countless church meetings with Dad (just to mention a few things). And still, she was there to embrace me whether it was a skinned knee or playing lousy in a ball game. A Mother’s day really never is done. Mothers, thank you! You have left an indelible imprint on countless lives.
The second day that I celebrated in May was … “school’s out for summer.” I always looked forward to being out of school and putting my mind and academic disciplines in neutral. As a child, I sought to have a good time, ride bikes, play ball, and stay out in the neighborhood until dark. Other than my mandatory chores around the house, I relaxed and chilled! Summer was all fun and games.
Central is at a crossroads this May. Which path will we emulate? Will we take up the charge and be busy for the kingdom this summer, or will we seek to take it easy? If not careful, churches will develop what I call the “May mentality.” We desire to coast and put our devotion to Christ and His kingdom in neutral. Heaven forbid that we succumb to this childish way of “stinkin’ thinkin’.” Some churches lapse into this “summer mode” and never “go back to school again.” This fact is evidenced in the realization that almost 90% of Southern Baptist Churches are plateaued or declining. Can you imagine a good mother taking it easy and doing nothing while nine of her ten children were dying because of lack of attention? Heavens No! Not only are churches dying, but people are perishing apart from Christ every single day. The time is short, we must remain busy for the Lord.
This month is a time to get out of school. Kids can enjoy this sabbatical. We, however, are not children. The fields are still ripe unto harvest. Instead of taking a break from the work of Christ, let us emulate our moms and remain busy. Let us remember the old hymn and “work ‘til Jesus comes.” After all, the work of Christians on this earth is not done. Happy Mother’s Day and happy May.

Be Blessed!
The STARS Luncheon on Friday, April 12, was not quite as well attended as last month but still held a good representation of senior adults, church staff, and visitors when you consider the pleasant spring day beckoning us outside after having been cooped up by cold then stormy weather. The devotion by Herman Marks Sr. was nothing short of classic wisdom discerned over many years of living the Christian life and presented as only Brother Herman’s wit and attention keeping humor can do.
Our special guest, and program, was Mrs. Dana Starnes, secretary in the RAM Office here at Central. Dana is a classical guitarist, who, in addition to playing her beautiful music, shared how she became associated with RAM and how she became the musician she is today.
The May Luncheon will be on the second Friday, May 10, this year, rather than the first Sunday as we have done in the previous years. This decision was made by the STARS Council and confirmed at the March Luncheon. Some of us had forgotten how entrenched the southern custom of “Decoration Day” on the first Sunday in May still is in the South.
The trip to Samford University in Birmingham for the Alabama Baptist Historical Commission and the Andrew Gerow Chapel was changed to Friday, May 3.
The trip to Calloway Gardens on June 20-21 has not had sufficient response; therefore the trip has been canceled. We can, however, get in on a one day trip with Dan’s Tours on June 20 to the Nashville, Tennessee Ryman Auditorium for a one day entertainment event with Vince Gill. We will depart Decatur at 3:00 pm from the Central parking lot. The cost of $89.00 includes transportation on a luxury bus and a ticket to the show. Information sheets are available on the STARS table.
I would imagine that the upcoming month of May is one of those “mixed emotion” times for the parents and family of our 2013 Graduating Senior Class. On one side you are thrilled to see your child or loved one graduate, although the reality is sinking in that this will begin a new chapter in their life. Let us not fret. Your student(s) has spent the past twelve years diligently pursuing one goal: the completion of school.
I believe with the knowledge they have received, coupled with a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, they will be able to handle many of the difficulties that will come their way. Let us be reminded not to consider our journey in life completed, but rather to press on:
“…I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: … I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
On behalf of the staff of Central Baptist Church, I am honored to extend to an invitation to our church family and to 2013 Graduating Seniors class to attend the 2013 Graduate Recognition Service the morning of May 19 in the 10:30 worship service.
