Thisdaymayhave emerged from a custom of motherworship in ancientGreece, whichkept a festival toCybele, a greatmother of Greekgods. This festival washeldaroundtheVernal Equinoxaround Asia Minor and eventually in Rome itselffromtheIdes of March (15 March) to 18 March.
TheancientRomansalsohadanotherholiday, Matronalia, thatwasdedicatedtoJuno, thoughmotherswereusuallygivengiftsonthisday.
In Europetherewereseverallongstandingtraditionswhere a specificSundaywas set asideto honor motherhood and motherssuch as MotheringSunday. MotheringSundaycelebrations are part of theliturgical calendar in several Christian denominations, includingAnglicans, and in theCatholic calendar ismarked as LaetareSunday, thefourthSunday in LenttohonourtheVirgin Mary and your "mother" church (themainchurch of thearea). Children and youngpeoplewhowere "in service" (servants in richerhouseholds) weregiven a day off onthat date so theycouldvisittheirfamilies (or, originally, returntotheir "motherchurch). In 1912, Anna Jarvistrademarkedthephrases "secondSunday in May" and "Mother'sDay", and createdtheMother'sDay International Association.

In mostcountries, Mother'sDayis a recentobservancederivedfromtheholiday as it has evolved in America. Whenitwasadoptedbyothercountries and cultures, itwasgivendifferentmeanings, associatedtodifferentevents (religious, historicalorlegendary), and celebrated in a different date or dates.
Somecountriesalreadyhadexistingcelebrationshonoringmotherhood, and theircelebrationshaveadoptedseveralexternalcharacteristicsfromthe US holiday, likegivingcarnations and otherpresentstoyourownmother.

Mother'sDaycontinuestobeone of themostcommerciallysuccessful U.S. occasions. AccordingtotheNational Restaurant Association, Mother'sDayisnowthemost popular day of theyeartodineout at a restaurant in theUnitedStates.
