PUBLIC INTEREST

In the June 2010 (page 77) issue of QST, Norm

Lauterette, WA4HYJ wrote a piece on a growing aspect of Amateur Radio known as the Neighborhood HamWatch.ur

It is a voluntary program for all amateur radio

operators who want to provide a helpful service to their neighbors during times of extended power outage. The

new program was developed in 2009 by Andy Gausz

KG4QCD of the Lake Monroe Amateur Radio Society

(LMARS) in Seminole County Florida. Communication isolation can be worsened by downed trees and power lines which

make it very difficult for emergency services to reach your neighborhood. This is a time

period that often lasts several days, maybe even weeks. It is a time when Amateur Radio Operators can help.

The “Neighborhood HamWatch” program design consists of 3 levels of

participation, and there are 3 things that hams can do. To find out more about the program, check out the back issue of QST or log onto this website: www.hamwatch.org

Neighborhood HamWatch is not a club. It is not an exclusionary organization. It is

a system that encourages and provides all amateur radio operators with a means of

using their equipment and skills to stay in contact when conventional means of communication are inoperable.

An informational brochure is available which will help explain the program and can

be printed by local hams and distributed to their neighbors: http://richhand2.home.comcast.net/~richhand2/Universal-Brochure.pdf

Veterans Day by Cheryl Dyson

On Veterans Day we honor all, Who answered to a service call. Soldiers young, and soldiers old,

Fought for freedom, brave and bold.

Some have lived, while others died, And all of them deserve our pride.

We’re proud of all the soldiers who,

Kept thinking of red, white and blue.

They fought for us and all our rights, They fought through many days and nights.

And though we may not know each name,

We thank ALL veterans just the same.

*** *** *** *** *** *** ***

Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11,

1918. In 1954, after having been through World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd

U.S. Congress amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov.

11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars.

In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees.

Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the last Monday of October. Many states did

not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25,

1971. Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which

returned the annual observance of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11,

beginning in 1978. Since then, the Veterans Day holiday has been observed on Nov. 11.
