Summer. Outdoor living. Swimming, hiking, biking, fishing, camping, waterskiing, surfing. Kayaking anyone? Hot airballooning? Mountain climbing? Outdoor activities foroutdoorsmen. Well, thanks, but no thanks. First, I have allergies. One of the only tests on which I scored100 was the allergist’s scratch test. Second, and I learned this thehard way, I am nothing more than bait for all flying insects. They’re attracted to me like metal shavings to an electro- magnet. The flies and mosquitoes that would otherwise bother you, will bedrawn right to me. You’re welcome for that. I do, truly, love theoutdoors, but I appreciate it most from indoors. I’m the oppositeof an outdoorsman, I’m an indoorsman. My idea of roughing it is having to sleep in any bed other thanmy own. For me, staying at a Holiday Inn is as bad as campingout. I’ve seen them do the black-light test in motel rooms on CSI.How do you know they haven’t just taken down the crime-scenetape from across the doorway to your room? The bed in a motel?I can’t even think about that. If I were camping out, at least I’d besleeping in my own sleeping bag. And I would know who else hadbeen sleeping in my sleeping bag (if I had one). So, I’d reallyrather not. I’ve loved the outdoors from indoors ever since MarlinPerkins’, Wild Kingdom. Cable TV came along and the NationalGeographic channel, and my appreciation of the outdoors greweven deeper. Since I most appreciated the outdoors from indoors,we decided to get an RV. We drove it all over and parked underbeautiful trees looking out on breathtaking vistas. I was outdoorswhile still being indoors. It was the perfect solution. Then, against my better judgement, I agreed to go for a hike.So we’re hiking. We’re walking along a trail, minding our ownbusiness, when I saw a tarantula. It was huge, hairy andterrifyingly scary. I started jumping up and down from foot to footlike I was walking on hot coals, all the while screaming like alittle girl. The tarantula didn’t move at all. I think I gave it a heartattack. So if you don’t see me doingoutdoorsy things this summer,it’s because I am designing anextensive array of slippersand sweat pants for everyoccasion. TheIndoorsman Collection.Only sold on-line, becauseindoorsman don’t gooutdoors unless absolutelynecessary.

The Quilting Club is comprised of a group of dedicated(I’m sure they have even been called obsessed) women whowill not put down their needles and threads until they havecovered the world in quilts. Not the whole world, just theworld of veterans, the world of abused children and the worldof children with cancer. The tour de force behind this club is Suzanne Wade, whoestimates that she alone does more than 15 million stitches ayear. Her home, like the homes of many of the club members,

is a quilting factory. One ofSuzanne’s many sewingmachines, the Long ArmMachine, takes up an entireroom. The quilters includeCharlene Bowman, JoyStatler, Cheryl Iles, GinnyGass, Carolyn Whittaker,Diana Carofano, Ann Lontz,Joanne Krebs, Mary Lekivetz ,Marty Webb and KarenCarder. Together, they havemade and given away 126Quilts of Valor to veterans.Plus, they have given morethan 120 quilts to abusedchildren and children withcancer which, amongstthemselves, they simply call“kids quilts”.

Quilting Angels By Alan Siegel, Resident

The Quilting Clubstarted giving away Quilts ofValor to veterans at theVeteran’s Day celebrationhere at Solera Diamond in2009, when they gave away14 quilts. Now, they giveaway an average of 18 Quiltsof Valor each Veteran’s Day.

The children’s quilts are taken to the Ronald McDonald Housein Loma Linda or the Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego orto the Olive Crest Treatment Center in Riverside. Making a quilt costs about $250 in material alone and takesbetween 50 and 100 hours to complete. The quilters have paidfor this out of their own pockets and are seeking funds to helpoff-set their expenses. To accomplish this objective, one quiltwill be auctioned off at the Memorial Day event and four quiltswill be auctioned off by the group on July 17th at noon in thecrafts room. Additionally, YOU can sponsor a quilt! Donateany amount to the Quilting Club to help them out or you cansponsor a quilt for $250 and have your name put on a label onthe quilt that is given away. Remember George Bailey in “It’s a Wonderful Life” tellinghis daughter that whenever a bell rings, another angel gets herwings? Well, at the annual Veterans’ Day Luncheon, when aQuilt of Valor is given away, the quilter who made that quiltgets her wings. The women in the Quilting Club help make lifea little bit more wonderful for local veterans and children. Theymeet on Fridays at 9:00 AM in the Crafts Room. All quiltersand would be quilters are welcome. For more information, contact Susanne Wade at (951) 791-1707 or email her [email protected].

Meet the Quilters: Win a Raffle Quilt The Quilt Club invites you to come and see the fourquilts they are raffling – made by four (4) separatequilters, four (4) opportunities to win (see them in thedisplay case). Tickets are $1.00 or 6 for $5.00. Ticketsales and viewings will be held on Fridays during thesewing time (9AM – 12 PM) and the quilts will beplaced in the display case for a personal look. The quiltswill be raffled on July 17th at High Noon! Also available will be a price sheet where you cansponsor part or all of a Quilt of Valor which will bepresented to one of our veterans, or a Quilt for a Kidwhich will go to a local care center. Proceeds of theseevents go to purchase batting and other supplies usedby the quilters for these philanthropic items. Thank youfor sponsoring our ‘good deeds’.

Earlier this year SDV resident Susie Debicki fulfilled alifelong dream of taking an extended three-week vacation toAustralia and New Zealand. Her trip started in Sydney withvisits to Chinatown, the iconic Sydney Opera House, BondiBeach and a cruise of the harbor. Dinners in Sydney includedcrocodile and kangaroo burgers as well as a wide assortment ofAsian dishes. The next several days took Susie’s group on toursof the Waradah Aboriginal Culture Center and the Blue

Mountains where they hiked in the rain forest and rode cablecars. They were then off to Featherdale Park to see 15’crocodiles, koala bears and many other animals native to theAustralian continent. A trip to the “outback” area of Maroota to see a workingsheep ranch was next. There they watched dogs herd sheep andthey learned how to crack whips and throw boomerangs. A bar-b-que lunch, that included Billy Tea and Damper Bread, madethe trip perfect. Susie thought that Sydney was safe and full offun-loving, wonderful people. The next leg of the trip took them aboard the RoyalCaribbean Explorer of the Seas. After two days at sea the ship

landed in MilfordSound, NewZealand for thesecond part of theadventure. On atwo day busjourney throughthe valleys, mountains andrain forest, Susiesaw a Kea parrot, the mostintelligent animalon earth that canlive in coldclimates and alsocan be verydestructive tovehicles andbuses. After anight at a 5-starhotel inQueenstown, thegroup went to thefamous BungeeBridge where thesport began in the1980s. Then itwas on to thehistoric city ofDunedin, famous for its churches and a Cadbury ChocolateFactory! In Auckland the group went to the “MaoriExperience” and learned about the native people of NewZealand. They ate a Hagi lunch of typical Maori food eaten intheir later days…not their earlier days when they werecannibals! The last stop was the Bay of Islands, which turned out tobe Susie’s favorite. She rode through green valleys and pastranches to see the glow worms in the limestone Kawiti Caveswhich were full of stalactite and stalagmite formations. Theythen hiked in to see the 1200 year old Kauri trees during a tripto Waipahu forest. These are majestic trees with light graybark that feels cold to the touch and as smooth as cement. Susie said that New Zealand left her with a greater respectfor nature. There were no crowds, just gorgeous beauty allaround. She hopes to return to this wonderful country in thefuture. It is a 12 hour nonstop flight from LAX (10 hourreturn) and she highly recommends this trip to everyone.

Located very close toSDV, Los Vaqueros is thego-to Mexican restaurant formany of our residents.Perhaps, though, you are:

A. New to the community

B. Haven’t been thererecently or

C. Weren’t raised in aplace that offered manyoptions for Mexicandining.

OK, I confess option Cdescribes yours truly. Ourchoices for Mexican foodwere Taco Bell, Taco Bell orTaco Bell until the last 10years or so. Five of us went to LosVaqueros to check out theirEarly Bird dining options,and/or sample other dishesfrom the menu. Therestaurant is decorated withmetal cutouts depictingcowboy themes between thebooths, and many otherTex/Mex cowboy decora-tions throughout. If you aregoing for dinner, plan to getthere early. We arrived closeto 4 and waited 5 minutes orso for our table. By the timewe left, the place wascrowded, people were waiting for seating, and the parking lot wasjammed. Generous bowls of chips and salsa were served as we decided on ourchoices. The Early Bird offering (not advertised anywhere that we couldsee) is $2 off the first 7 Combo plates. We ordered Fajitas, the Taco/Enchilada Combo and a Tostadita. TheFajita dish is large enough to share, which 2 of us did, ordering theSteak/Chicken option. Both the combined plate and the chicken alone disharrived sizzling to the table, accompanied by tortillas, beans, rice, guacamole and sour cream. All three of us found the dish very good, andhad fun mixing the add-ins into our tortillas. TheTaco/Enchilada Combo was “authentic and spicy” according toour diner, the raspberry ice tea to accompany it was delicious. A generoussalad was substituted for the rice and beans. The Tostadita, a new term to me, is a smaller version of a tostada. Theportion was perfect for one, nicely presented and given a thumbs up byour diner.

DIAMOND VALLEY DINERLos Vaqueros Cantina & GrillBy Theresa Rossetti, Resident

I find it funny that the woman who rarely cooks iswriting another recipe article, but here goes!

Ingredients1 loaf Italian bread 1 stick of butter, melted1/8 cup olive oil 3 tsp. minced onion2-3 cloves of grated garlic 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard1 tbsp. poppy seeds 3 tsp. chopped parsley12 oz. shredded cheese (your choice of cheese orcheeses, cheddar and Monterey jack are good, feelfree to mix it up)

Directions Preheat the oven to 350° F. Mix the butter, oil, onion, garlic, mustard, poppyseed and parsley in a bowl. Cut the bread (see photo) into cubes with Xslices, cutting close to, but not through, the bottomcrust. Using a small spoon, pour the butter mix into theX channels and over the top of the bread. Then stuffthe cheese into the channels in the bread. Wrap the loaf tightly with foil, sealing the sides, and bake for 15-20 mins. Remove from oven, unwrapand return to oven for 10 mins more until the cheeseis melted and gooey. To prep ahead of time, after wrapping theprepared loaf in foil, store in a freezer bag or plasticwrap till needed. Thaw and bake as above. With all the activities we have in our community,I’m always looking for tasty, not hard to prepare, goodies to bring to potlucks, BYOBs, etc. This breadcould certainly fill that bill!

On April 30th Solera had its’ “First” Neighborhood Watch Community Block Party.I say first because everyone had such a great time, I hear they want to do it again nextyear!!! The purpose of the event was to show that our residents are “out there” watchingtheir neighbors in an effort to help keep our community safe. A BIG thank you to all mycaptains/co-captains for gathering people in 15 locations throughout SDV. We hadparties going in both of the paseo parks, behind the Lodge, driveways/garages/courtyards and out in the streets. I tried to make it outto them all but didn’t have time. What a delight it wasto come around the corner and find another 20-40people gathered around getting to know one another. The pictures are only a small sample of the tremendousturnout our community had. Thanks to all for making our community the greatplace that it is.

Water VolleyballBy Dana Kilpatrick, Resident

Water Volleyball isa fun “team” sportsactivity here at SDVand we would love foryou to try it outsometime!! We havecustomized our style of play to be safe for seniors and funfor beginners; however, this sport provides plenty ofchallenging fun for volleyball veterans as well! We playwith “ultra-light” volleyballs, which are easier on thejoints, and the water is a great, low-impact environment aswell. No experience is necessary; we are a co-ed activity, and being tall is not required. Water Volleyball is played in the indoor pool everyWed & Fri at 11:00 a.m. All you need to do is show up!!We need a minimum of 4 players, 2 per side, in order to setup the equipment, but there is no maximum limit ofplayers and no waiting for a turn to play. We just move theboundary in or out to accommodate an ever-changing

What is Pickleball?By Melinda Terrian, Resident

Pickleball is a game that compares to tennis, badminton, racquetball and ping-pong. You can play singles or with a partner -- but you need a court, a paddle, aball and an opponent to play. Pickleball has its own special set of equipment: Thecourt is the size of a badminton court; the paddle has a short handle and the ballis similar to a wiffle ball. The sport began as a casual backyard game, but it caught on. It has its ownassociation, the USA Pickleball Association, and there are even national pickleballtournaments. Great News !!!! At Solera Diamond Valley we have a very active pickleballgroup. Group play is as follows: Easy play is Tuesday and Thursday from 9am-12pm and Intermediate play Saturday, Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9am-12pm. We also play in the evening, Intermediate on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursdayfrom 5-8pm. Wednesday night is for ladiesonly, 5-8pm. In addition throughout the year there areorganized tournaments, social events andlessons. If you have any questions contact -Rick Terrian [email protected] [email protected] Once you get on the courts you will notwant to leave. Come over and join the fun.

number of players. You can even join in during the middleof a game! We typically play for 2-3 hours, depending onhow long people want to stay, but some players leave earlyif physical limitations preclude playing longer. The rules are easy to learn and we love to have newpeople join us. Feel free to pull up a chair by the pool andwatch us for a while or, better yet, jump on in and enjoy thefun. We don’t care much who wins or loses. We just liketo have lots of laughter and fun in the water!
