When asked, many Presbyterians know not just the

following word of the lyrics, but a whole series of

phrases. What is so remarkable about this? All five

of the hymns in question were unfamiliar to

Presbyterian congregations when the “new blue”

hymnal appeared in 1990. Had churches never

adopted that resource, these songs—and many

others just as meaningful and memorable— would

have remained outside the shared worship life of

PC(USA) congregations.

Instead, within a matter of a relatively few years,

those once “new” songs became “old” favorites.

You may or may not be aware of this, but a new

Presbyterian Hymnal has been in the works for

some time now. It is a remarkable collection of

hymns, readings and liturgies, reminding us of

God’s presence with people of faith of ages past

and God’s people today, charging us to praise God,

to join with God in our work in this world, and to

look to a new day when the promises of God will

in the chapel so that we can actually display the music as well as the lyrics.

Like our parents, grandparents, and great- grandparents who lived to see

the arrival of new hymnals in 1990, 1975, 1955, 1933, and on back into

historical memory, we can await this new opportunity with eagerness and

confidence.

We can do so because we firmly believe, to cite our Brief Statement of

Faith, that “the same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles”

continues to “rule our life and faith.” Or, to borrow words from the closing

stanza of the hymn “To Abraham and Sarah (I Will Be Your God)” by

Judith A. Fetter that is “new” to Glory to God (2013) but promises—God

willing—to be among those we will sing for years to come:

We of this generation on whom God’s hand is laid can journey to the

future secure and unafraid, rejoicing in God’s goodness and trusting in

this word, “That you shall be my people and I will be your God.”

Soon after this decision was made, some very thoughtful and generous

members offered to fund the lion’s share of the new hymnals,

approximately 250 of them, which allows for a unique opportunity for our

congregation.

New Hymnals will be available for purchase for $25.00, ($5.00 more than

their cost to us), with the extra amount designated for a very special

purpose ...

Through the purchase of the

“Glory to God” hymnals, a special

Weekday Concert Series Event for

Children will be funded, inviting

elementary school children from

nearby schools to enjoy a fun,

musical-filled program, designed

by a collaborative group of creative

and talented members and friends

of Second Church.

To purchase the new hymnals, you may fill in the form on the back of the

newsletter and mail it in with your check, or fill in the form online at

www.secondpresby.org/new-hymnals/. You will be able to dedicate your

hymnals in honor of/ in memory of those whom you wish.

SUMMER 2014 WORSHIP

@ SECOND

“Grace in the Grit” - Fruits of the Spirit for Daily Living -

Our summer worship services for 2014, beginning Sunday, June 15, will be at 10 AM in the Sanctuary. Each Sunday’s

theme will come as one of the “Gifts of the Spirit”, as outlined by the Apostle Paul.

Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. There is no law against such things. If we live by the Spirit, let us also be guided by the Spirit. Galatians 5:22, 23, 25

Included in each of our worship services will be a brief time for us to

explore, in a time of “holy listening”, how it is that we have experienced

one of these gifts in our lives; a time for us to notice the extraordinary

graces that God shares with us that we all too often dismiss; hidden gems

in our lives we all too often fail to notice.

Each summer Sunday we will join in exploring God’s gifts for us, as

individuals and as members of the Body of Christ together, in the Church.

Our newest members of Second Presbyterian—our Confirmands: Thomas

Murphy, Sophie Elisseeff, Grace Felder, Jack Payne, Sarah Walsh, Matt Kleiser

Mission Day 2014

Heartfelt thanks from the Mission Council to all who participated in April's Mission Day activities. April 26

brought sunny weather for planting seeds at First Fruits Farm and flowers at the McKim Center. With

contributions from the congregation, trail-mixers assembled almost 500 bags of healthy snacks in Smith Hall

for Baltimore's hungry and homeless. Our leaders were Wendell Leimbach, Anne Perry, Sue Leber, and

Andrew Birmingham. Watch for photos of God at work on our bulletin boards near the Westcott entrance!

~Barbara Newbauer

Holy Listening Update During our Holy Listening exercises in the fall, we

asked “What is the one thing that we could do together

at Second Presbyterian Church that would make me

say that ‘I’m IN?’” One of the things we heard was a

strong interest from the congregation in exploring ways

that we could collectively engage with our

community. The needs of Baltimore’s homeless

population and its at-risk youth were two concerns

mentioned by many people who participated this

exercise.

For the past few months, members of the

congregation have been researching these topics and

sharing what they have learned during education

sessions with interested members of the

congregation. Many thanks to all those who attended

these sessions and responded to the bulletin surveys

because your feedback is an important part of this

process. Over the next few weeks, these teams will be

finalizing their recommendations about opportunities

for members of our congregation to become involved

in targeted projects with our community. Please stay

tuned! ~Gay Shackelford

THE CHURCH TOWER · A NEWSLETTER OF THE SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF BALTIMORE

Remembering World War I

T his summer marks the 100th anniversary of the

assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the

heir to the Austro-Hungarian empire, by a Serbian

nationalist. It’s hard to imagine that this single event

launched the war they called “The Great War” or

“The War to End All Wars.” Of course the reasons

for the war were more complicated, and we know all

too well it didn’t end all wars. What we now call

World War I ushered in what arguably became the

world’s bloodiest century.

It seems appropriate that we commemorate the

centennial date and honor the lives of the millions

who perished. Perhaps we should also consider the

repercussions of that terrible war that continue to

affect us today in the Middle East, particularly, in

Iraq, and the ongoing Israeli/Palestinian conflict

(though not in the space of this article).

At the back of our sanctuary there is a

plaque dedicated to those from Second

Church who served in the war. You’ve

probably walked by it many times

without taking notice. Of the 37 names

on the list, only one lost his life — Pvt.

Carl A. Brandt who died in the Alsace

region of France on October 2, 1918

(just six weeks before the end of the

war on November 11, 1918).

Looking at the list of names, there are probably few,

if any, that are known to current members of the

congregation. The very last American veteran of

World War I died in 2011 at the age of 110, and most

of the men on this list probably passed away long

before that. However, there is at least one familiar

name— Harry Silverwood.

Harry Silverwood Sr. was the father of current

member Harry Silverwood, Jr. and grandfather of

Scott Silverwood, our clerk of session. He served in

World War I as an ambulance driver in the Medical

Corps, although he never was posted outside of the

United States since the U.S. entered the war

relatively late in June 1917. He was assigned to the

Monmouth Park Racecourse (renamed Fort

Monmouth in August 1925) for training. ~ Julie Evans

(Continued from page 6) Session Highlights Stated Session Meeting

April 15, 2014

M oderator Rev. Thomas Blair opened the April

Stated Session at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, April 15

and led the opening worship based on John 12:20-26.

He focused on the image of self-sacrifice: "Very truly, I

tell you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and

dies, it remains just a single grain; but if it dies, it bears

much fruit." Elders read portions from chapter one,

“The Practice of Radical Hospitality,” from Five

Practices of Fruitful Congregations and reflected on its

meaning.

Elder Jim Kucher, who is heading up the Internal

Listening Campaign, introduced Rev. Kate Foster

Connors of The Center: Where Compassion Meets

Justice, a program of the Baltimore Presbytery, to the

Session meeting to instruct elders on how to address

congregational renewal. As a result of the listening

group sessions that took place, many church members

suggested that they would like attention drawn to

"building a better congregation." Priorities include a

desire to build membership, create fellowship

opportunities, involve our youth, improve existing

programs, refine our attitudes toward outreach,

capitalize on our music programs, and expand our work

with the elderly and provide transportation for them.

Rev. Foster Connors encouraged elders to be trained to

listen to the 72 members who responded to the listening

session to determine how they can carry out

congregational renewal. Elders felt strongly that they

need to undertake this listening process to re-engage

members in keeping with their practice of “radical

hospitality.” As such, elders unanimously approved a

motion that Session undergo training for listening

sessions and share the responsibility to reach out to

those who responded to the listening sessions.

In other matters, a dinner is being planned for the fall as

a general stewardship event and reinvigoration of the

Legacy Society. Rev. Blair and Rev. DiFrancesco

shared concerns about those in declining health,

undergoing surgery, and are retiring. Rev. Blair closed

the meeting with the Lord’s Prayer.

THE CHURCH TOWER · A NEWSLETTER OF THE SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF BALTIMORE

“A Meditation of My Heart” By Connie Rand*

I’m having a “grand and glorious” time While trying to tell you these thoughts of mine, Describing the wonderful place we come To worship and study, and “visit some, Here at Second Church among friends We examine together the latest trends In teaching “The Word” and learning the facts Of Presbyterian Order and Acts. Here fine traditions are followed, too, With past historical roots in view. We’re sometimes aware of a moment when The strength of the faithful, collective “Amen” Of the silent worshippers gone before Leaves a promise of many more To sing, to pray, to carry on Traditions and changes in word and song That constantly happen as time slips by No matter how much we balk, and try To keep things as they “used to be,” Finding scant reason to agree. But, In this hallowed, caring place, God’s house which can its story trace Through the past two-hundred years, This place of joy—also of tears, This congregation great and strong To which we’re honored to belong, Will stand and welcome everyone Who comes to join the growing throng Of God’s own people here together Bound in love to last forever.

Landscaping Committee Report

M embers of the Landscape Committee met on

April 14 to tour the property to determine

what landscaping repairs might be needed due to the

harsh winter. It was noted that many of the azalea

bushes especially on the St. Paul Street side are quite

old and need to be replaced. The committee

members discussed planting annuals in front of the

Sanctuary again this summer to provide a little color

for the summer weddings. Last year a donation

made this possible.

The landscape company hired to do maintenance

came April 17 and 18 to thoroughly prune, clean

flower beds, and mulch. At this time, two plant beds

were installed. One of these beds is located by the

stairs in front of the Sanctuary. The other is on

Stratford Road near Sylvia’s Garden. The

committee was pleased this work could be

accomplished before the Easter Sunday service.

Future plans are to focus on finding money to start

replacing the dying azaleas and to follow up on the

health of all the plants that make Second

Presbyterian Church such a beautiful property. The

Landscape committee

would appreciate

receiving donations to

help with the replacement
