Like charity, Security begins at homeBy Ed Leahy, for the SSV HOA Security Committee

No Police Force in the world can sit in front of each and every one of our homes to prevent intrusions. When it comes to home security we are our first and best line of defense. Our duties are simple. Minimize the opportunities for intrusions. Don’t leave garage doors open when you’re not in them or park your car in your driveway with doors unlocked.

Never leave your car locked or unlocked, with valuables on a seat or, keys in the ignition. Golf carts and bicycles should be secured as well. As for your home, having security doors on exterior doorways can prevent inner doors from being kicked in. Sensor lights that light whenever anyone approaches your house can discourage intruders. Keeping serial numbers of valuables aids Police recovery of stolen goods. In short protect-ing your property helps keep SSV a low crime area.

We live in the Superstition Police District and the popula-tion of our District is approximately 163,000—which changes with the influx of winter visitors. It is the largest District in the Mesa police department and the fastest growing. There are 128 sworn staff at Superstition which includes Patrol and Supervisors. There are moving patrols in our district streets 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to Officers who patrol the district, Karen Stegenga, Mesa PD Crime Prevention Of-ficer alerts SSV Block Watch Groups of any untoward events or suspicious activity in the district with emailed messages. Given that security begins at home—these messages can be the heart of our effort.

If you’re not in a Block Watch, contact Karen Stegenga, Crime Prevention Officer at (480) 644-5014 or email her at [email protected]

Sunland Springs Village Voice September 2016 3

Around the Village

[email protected]: Robin Scott, HOA Manager

Thursday, September 22, is our first day of fall. I can hardly believe our summer is almost gone! We hope your summer has been amazing and that you’re ready for our upcoming season. We’re looking forward to having all of our “travelers” return home. Once you’ve settled in, make sure to stop in our office and fill out the “return” form. We’d love to see you and say “hello.” We’ve been so busy working on our summer projects, annual maintenance and very needed common area updates. I do believe you will be pleased with our progress. We enjoy working as a team to ensure your community remains beautiful and safe. We have one more month of monsoons and encourage you to keep your trees and large foliage trimmed back. The winds can uproot mature trees and cause major damage. Please be mindful of boundary lines and walkways and keep your trees and all plants trimmed back so they do not encroach on your neighbor’s yard and community walkways. If you have a maintenance emergency after

hours, please contact our FirstService Residential Customer Care Center at 480-551-4300. Your initial call will be directed to the call center. When they ask what community you are calling from, please be sure to be specific as to the SSV Master Association or Sub Association you live in. This will help more accurately route your call. If you are interested in volunteering for events, committees, or otherwise, please let us know. We love, need, and appreciate our volunteers! We will be introducing our “Volunteer Initiative” in the upcoming season and look forward to your help with many volunteer opportunities. For your convenience, the Village Voice is also available to view on our website: www.ssvhoa.com. Enjoy your September and let us know how we may better serve and assist you! As always, thank you for your generosity, warmth and most importantly, for being a part of this beautiful community!

Rheba’s RamblingsBy: Rheba Hysell, Activities [email protected]

On the fun side, we don’t’ have a lot of activities planned for September due to the Auditorium being closed the whole month of September for maintenance. September 6, will be our Labor Day Celebration in the San Tan with Pot Luck at 11:30 and Remember When Doo Wop at 1:00 PM cost is $6.00. Deadline for tickets will be Friday, September 2. Voice deadline will be September 8. Sips & Dips will be September 12, in the San Tan at 4:00 PM. Painting Classes in the “Bob Ross” style are scheduled to resume on September 14, in the 4 Peaks. Bowling, to get to know your managers, will be on September 15. Only cost, lane use and shoes. The Ladies Luncheon is slated for September 21 at China City. We will offer Stargazing on September 21, in the Auditorium parking lot the cost will be $6.00 and will start at 7:00 PM. They will be bringing three telescopes to view the stars! Bingo will start again on October 6!

There were far too many issues with the kitchen during the last inspection. It is the re-

sponsibility of each club, organization or pri-vate individual who uses it to follow Maricopa County rules. It is obvious rules have not been followed. There were two critical violations which need to be addressed. Therefore, there will be mandatory testing for all who use the kitchen. A date in October will be announced later for a training session that will require attendance. Please have your club representa-tives ready to attend and be able to train those in your group. The safety of our residents is top concern and must be addressed.

October will bring lots of changes. Be sure to get all your information into the Activities Office early in September. If it is necessary to change your reservation, written notice is required to be sent to the Activities Office. If you are cancelling your reserva-tion, please fill out a cancellation form. It is important for us to have information on file to show movement regarding the reservations. Have a great month!

Compliance CornerBy Kathy Fowers, Office Coordinator

Looking forward to the coming season, the Architectural Committee has been busy updating the Architectural Control Policy Manual for single family residences. The new manual can be found on the SSVHOA.com website under HOA Infor-mation, Master HOA, Architectural Control Policy Manual.

Along that same line, the Architectural Committee recently approved a selection of Reflecto Seal paint colors that are heat reflective. There is a color sample board in the Association Office.

Garbage Cans – per the community’s CC&R’s (4.7) trash containers shall be visible only for the shortest time reason-ably necessary to effect such collection. Kindly refrain from placing your container in a visible location until the evening before collection, and have it removed to a nonvisible location by the evening of collection.

As residents return to the community, please stop by the Association Office and fill out a Return Form.

With the influx of residents, there will be a few residents seeking parking variances for having more vehicles than they do garage bays. If you are seeking a variance for this reason, please submit a photo of your garage with the garage doors open, showing that the garage is full of cars. Photos may be submitted either in person, or by emailing them to me. I will submit the photo(s) along with your parking variance ap-plication to the Board of Directors for their decision. [email protected]

To those who weathered the heat of the summer, cooler weather is almost here! To those returning, welcome back! To all of our residents here at Sunland Springs Village, we’re glad you’re here!

Chapel Tidingsby Springs Chapel Board

There is a Christian community worship service each Sunday at 9:00 a.m., followed by a fel-lowship hour with complimentary coffee and donuts. During the month of September the worship services will be held in the San Tan Auditorium.

Springs Chapel is a non-denominational ministry whose mission is to proclaim the gospel of Christ in worship, fel-lowship, witness, and outreach. Everyone is welcome to at-tend whether or not a resident of the Sunland Springs Village community. Communion is offered the first Sunday of each month. Pastor Anthony Bryant and Pastor Lanny Barringer serve as its pastors.

You are also invited to participate in the following Chapel activities. Springs Chapel Choir is under the direction of Judy Herr (480-659-7026). There are no scheduled choir practices or performances during the months of May through September. Chapel men’s and women’s groups meet once a month on a Thursday morning. For further information on these groups contact Bud Dighton at 480-380-7733 (Men’s Group) or Ju-lia Hoon at 509-679-8009 (Women’s Group). The Women’s Reading Group meets once a month and will continue to meet during the summer months. Contact person for the reading groups is Sylvia Hansen (480-984-4347). Special events are coordinated by Tony and Donna Mills (480-946-7344).

The last of the summer Sunday evening hymn sings will be held in the San Tan Auditorium on September 4th beginning at 6 p.m. The hymn sings are open to all who wish to attend, as are the Sunday morning worship services.

“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not want-ing anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9, NIV

Community Bible Study

You are invited to attend the Commu-nity Bible Study that is held every Friday

morning at 9 a.m. in the Springs Card Room. The Bible studies continue throughout the summer months.

This is an interdenominational study, open to men and women. There is no charge and no book to buy – the Bible is the study guide with use of commentaries by trusted Christian writers. Bring any translation of the Bible you prefer to use.

A study of the Book of 2 Peter will conclude the first part of September and will be followed by a study of the book of Jude. Sylvia Hansen is the Bible study leader for these studies.

If you have any questions about the Bible study, please call Ardella Burtman at 480.993.3102.

ClubsWeight Watchers Returns in OctoberLinda Daniels

Welcome back winter residents, I am happy to announce Weight Watchers of Arizona will be returning to SSV for the Fall and Spring sessions, beginning Wednesday October 7, 2016

We will again be meeting in the San Tan center on Wednesday mornings. Weigh in will be at 7:45AM. Meeting at 8:00 AM. Looking forward to seeing everyone! More information next month.

SSV Computer ClubBy Pat Miller

We are seeing great attendance at our summer sessions, especially the new faces. We hope everyone will join us as we begin our new season on October 5, 2015. During the summer we cover topics on both PC and Apple products via instructional videos, followed by individual and group breakout sessions. We also cover the latest in phone

and computer scams. All SSV residents are welcome to our summer meetings. No attendance is taken or fees collected.

We do ask that you wear your nametag however. Bring your laptop, tablet or phone and someone should be able to answer any questions you may have. We can help on almost any issue or device. If you let either Diana Grubb (510-673-0248) or me (602-321-6619) know ahead of time we will try to have someone available to help.

We hope to see on the first and third Wednesdays for the rest of the summer. This summer season we have been meeting at 10:00 AM in the newly configured Conference Room (behind the library). However, with the great turn out it is getting rather crowed. Please look on our web site (ssvcc.com) for the latest information on where and when we will meet in September. Hope to see you on September 7 and 21.

Village VoicesWelcome Fall—and welcome back all singers who wish to participate in

the group known as Village Voices! Village Voices is a full chorus of men and women who come together to practice and participate in two concerts each year. If you would like to be a part of this great activity with other community members, come join us; no auditions are required. We are a joyful group and

welcome new talent and are honored to once again be directed by Judy Herr. The group meets in the auditorium every Monday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 and Friday morning

from 10:15 – noon beginning October 3rd. Dues are still only $10. We know some of you won’t be back from your summer homes by that time, but we hope you can join

us soon. We have had such tremendous support from our community and friends that we have had to go to two presentations for our Christmas concert, which will be on Sunday, December 11, at 3:00 and 7:00 pm.

Writers Clubby Dave Filsinger

This summer, Sunland Springs Village Writers Club has continued to meet, in spite of the heat, with writing that cannot be beat; rhyming is fun and summers are neat. Enough with the rhyming, this should be about timing . . . and with tem-peratures climbing . . . I am hopefully priming . . . your interest to get involved.

The group is open to all writers―even fledgling ones like myself. Everyone has opportunities to read their work and gain valuable insights and assistance from the group. The Writers Club is comprised of people with a joy of writing and reading. This summer we have written and discussed such diverse topics as Civil War history, biographies, fishing, Strategic Optimized Management Systems, poetry, war memories, children’s books, malapropisms, carnival experiences, and more. This is an incredibly supportive group with great people. If you love to write, please consider yourself invited. Writers Club meets in the Summit Card Room, the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon.

Please mark your calendars for a special Club meeting on October 20 when local Publisher Dustin Hall will present publishing tips.

Hand & FootBy Glenda Beals – [email protected]

We hope you will stop by to join us in playing a fun card game called Hand & Foot. This is an open group where everyone is invited to participate. We welcome new players, men, women, singles and couples. There is no commitment required, just play when you want. It is a fun card game and easy to learn. There is always

someone who will be happy to teach you the game. Initially there is nothing needed. But, later you may wish to bring your own cards plus paper and pencil for keeping score. We meet in the Springs Card Room at 6:30 pm every Saturday…..all year.

Coming Soon!By Doris Havelka

Yes, summer is coming to an end and it's time to come out of our air-conditioned homes and see our friends and neighbors at the Oktoberfest, being held on October 1st, in the Auditorium. Tickets will be sold in the HOA office

for only $10, which includes: Brats, hot dogs, German potato salad, sauerkraut and dessert. There will be German music, so feel free to get up and dance, a 50/50 drawing and Button Box (accordion type) music by the Neumuller Brothers! And yes, the sound system will be working this year!

The Karaoke Club is also hosting the Halloween Spooktacular dance on October 29th. Tickets will be sold in the HOA office. Gift Certificates will be given out for the Funniest, Scariest and Best costume! So start planning on what you're going to wear this year!

These events are again being sponsored by the Karaoke Club, which has monthly parties in the San Tan Center on the 1st Friday of each month and is open to everyone, bring your own drinks and we will supply the ice! Remember you don't have to sing to enjoy the fun!!

Hikers and Would be HikersBy John Tibbels

We will be having our annual organizational meeting on Wednesday, October 26th at 11:00 am in the Majestic and Springs Card Room.

I would like anyone interested in hiking to come and participate. I am in-terested in finding out how much interest we have in hikes that are shorter than

most of the ones we normally do, i.e. around 3 miles in length not our normal 5-6 miles in length and also at a slower pace. If you know of other SSV residents who are interested in hiking please pass the word. If you have questions or comments, you can e-mail me, John Tibbels, at [email protected]

SUNSHINE TEAMBy Lisa Smith

It is official, our first meeting of the season will be October 18th at 10:00 am in the Superstition Room. We hope all of you will come and join us and help us plan some new fun things for us to do and ways to help greet our newcomers. We will meet every third Tuesday of the month thru May! Superstition Senior Mixed Bowling League 2016 - 2017 Season

By: Coreen RennerA “Welcome Back Get Together” for all returning bowling members will be held in the Mesa Verde

Room in Sunland Village East on Monday, October 31, 2016 at 4:30 PM. We hope to see all of you who are interested in bowling this season and possibly new bowlers. If for some chance you signed up to bowl but are unable to this season, please advise us before the meeting. If you have friends who might not see this article, tell them about the meeting. Subs are also invited to attend.

The first day of bowling is Monday, November 7th at 3:30 PM at the Mesa East Bowling Center located at Broadway and Ellsworth (across from Fry’s). Please arrive no later than 3:00 PM on the first day of bowling for administrative needs. The weekly cost of bowling is $10 per person for members and $8 for subs. The 50-50 drawing will continue this season.

We are a non-sanctioned SVE/SSV fun league! We have a Christmas Party, a No-Tap Fun Day and a bowling banquet. If you would like to bowl, please call Margie Esty (SSV) at 480-986-7838 or Coreen Renner (SVE) at 480-830-7572.

Vagabond ClubBy Bob Gray

Another Arizona Summer will hopefully be winding down soon. Our friends and neighbors that escaped the heat will soon be returning to enjoy our great community. This summer, in this space, we have been featuring the three SSV

Vagabond Group trips that we have scheduled. They are AMA Waterways Tulip Time and the Enchanted Rhine next April, and a Collette Motor Coach trip The Islands of New England in October of next year.

I know, it sounds like these trips are in the distant future, however the Ama Certo on the Tulip Time Cruise has only 82 Cabins. The New AMA Kristina on the Enchanting Rhine Voyage has only 79 State-rooms. These are both popular tours, and they will fill up rapidly, so don’t delay getting your stateroom reserved for one or both of these trips. Find complete details at www.ssvhoa.com/terra-travel

While watching the television news, you have seen the long lines at Airport Security. If you dread those lines when you travel, you may want to check out the TSA “Known Traveler” program, also known as TSA Pre. The cost of the program is $85 for five years. With TSA Pre you won’t be asked to remove your shoes, belts, light jackets, liquids, or laptops when you go through security. You fill out the application on line, and then go to the processing center in Tempe to complete the process. If you fly either domestic or International, you may want to check out this program.

Are you planning a trip to Algodones, Rocky Point or other location outside of the US? Check to be sure your Pass Port is current. The expiration date must be at least six months after your travel return date. Renewals take time, so check it out.

With the Fall Season upon us, the Tour Providers are starting to get their 2016-2017 Season Tours finalized. As we receive their information, we will be posting it on the web. Check out www.ssvhoa.com/terra-travel and then “Click” on Motor Coach Fliers. You can pause the slide show, to read all of the information, or print a paper copy.

Tennis ClubBy Marcia Stein

Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye to all current SSV Tennis Club Members and as well as those that are thinking about

picking up the sport. Hope everyone has enjoyed their summer. The start of the next EVSTL Senior Tennis League season is rapidly approaching and scheduled to start the week of 11/7. The Welcome Back Party is scheduled on Su 11/6. There will be two Newcomers to Tennis Instruction to be held again this year. The first one is Mo 11/21 @ 3pm on the North Courts. The date of the second one is TBD.

This past summer President, Joe Ricci has been busily going through the appropriate channels to get the trees at the south end of courts 1 and 2 removed and replaced with differ-ent vegetation that won’t grow tall enough to be able to drop its leaves into the court. Additionally, the Executive Committee has been rewording/revising the club by laws to be voted on at the first General Tennis Mtg on We 10/19. Also, did you know there is now SSV Tennis Club History Project on our website? Past President, Terry Garrett has been working on this on and off since last spring. Be sure to check it out. Many of you have been with SSV Tennis from the beginning. Please review it. If you see any errors when you read the information, please notify an Executive Team Member.

We are sorry to lose Cindy Geiser as our club treasurer as she is not coming back to Mesa this year. She did more than we all know for our club. We are fortunate that Don Wogen has accepted his appointment to be the interim treasurer.

On a sad note, some of you may not have known that we lost Doug Korver in June this year. He put up a good fight with the support of his family and friends. The entire Tennis Club will miss not seeing Doug puttering around the tennis courts doing the many things that he could see that needed to be done

.

September SSVGC News Updateby Burt Marcus

Now that September has arrived, the SSVGC Board of Directors is very excited about the progress that has been made on the patio addition this summer. We are on schedule for completion for late September. Equipment additions in the kitchen will help improve the functioning of our kitchen & our capacity to help serve the community better.

If you haven’t seen the changes yet, perhaps a walk by the Pro Shop will surprise you with our additions, & the updates at the Pro Shop. Progress on the reconditioning of the San Tan Courseis in progress & will continue for the next few months. Any questions can be addressed by Jay Larscheid, General Manager of the SSV Golf Club, in our Pro Shop.

Pickleball Sept. 2016

Construction on our new pickleball courts is now well underway and should

be completed sometime this fall. It will be a treat to have 8 new courts in addition to the 4 we currently have. The inclusion of an amenities building with a kitchen, storage area, and restrooms completes our much-needed new facility. You can wander down to the construction area to see for yourself or check out the Pickleball Club web page at SSVHOA.COM for posted pictures, courtesy of Gary Wagner and Steve Heyer.

We all are anxious to see the new courts and to play on them during the coming season. Everyone in SSV can look forward to a grand opening celebration for the entire com-munity later this year. In the meantime, the early-morning summer playing hours every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday are still in effect. If you have questions, call Gary Wagner at 309-241-7811.

A New Reverse Mortgagefrom Sun American Mortgage Company, Offers a Brighter

Outlook on Retirement!Sun American Mortgage Company has been helping people plan for a better retirement with a Reverse Mortgage for over 25 years! In fact, Terry Turk, President of Sun American Mortgage Company, wrote the fi rst reverse Mortgage in Arizona. They are local reverse mortgage experts, with licensed CPAs and fi nancial planners to help get people the most out of their retirement. When asked why they continue to do reverse mortgages, Terry simply stated “We do this, because a reverse mortgage can really make a difference in their retirement and their life!” He continued. “The security and peace of mind people gain, when a reverse mortgage is

done correctly and for the right reasons, helps them sleep at night.”When you look closer at the reverse mortgage program, you understand just how true that statement can be. A reverse mortgage is available to anyone over the age of 62 with equity in their home. It is federally insured and is now being utilized by fi nancial planners all over as a smart planning tool, even if it never gets used. Mishel Johnson in Mesa said “Now that we don’t have a monthly mortgage payment, we are able to enjoy our retirement and do many of the things we were used to doing.” Don and Barbara in Gilbert use their reverse mortgage to pay for emergencies and unplanned

expenses. “It’s so nice to be able to use the tax free funds from our reverse mortgage to pay for unexpected car repairs, and help our children with their down payment on their new home without having to pull our money out of the market when it is down.”
