Bridge at Campbelltown celebrated it’s 4th Birthday last month.
Campbelltown was the last (so far) of our satellite clubs to be
established and whilst it got off to a slow start, it now has a
regular following. Campbelltown has open and supervised play
every Friday morning from 10am to 1pm.

Back Office News
The silly season has officially commenced!! There will be lots of things happening at the club before we say farewell to 2017.
The Melbourne cup luncheon is on Tuesday 7th November. Tuesday is now one of our busiest days, so it is important to put your name on the nomination sheet on the Noticeboard if you intend to take part. See page 8 for more details. Also coming up is the SABA AGM on Sunday 3rd December @ 10.45am. Once again booking for the lunch is essential for catering purposes. The cost is just $10 for lunch and bridge afterwards.
The club is keen to resurrect Friday nights and to help make it a friendly social night the start time will be changed to 7pm from 3rd November. This will allow for a full evening of bridge with more time to stay back and have a drink and socialize with other players. More information about Friday nights is on page 7.
$600 in Prizemoney
John and Nora Martin Mixed Pairs
The John and Nora Martin Mixed Pairs is a sponsored event which commences on Monday Nights in November. John and Nora’s son, Robert is a member of the club and has offered extra prizemoney to run a restricted pairs event (Under 300 masterpoints) in conjunction with the Open event. Prizemoney for both sections will total $600. (1st—$150, 2nd—$100 and 3rd—$50 in each section).
[Ed Note: Normal bridge is still available for partnerships that are not competing as a mixed pair]
Significant Change to Friday Bridge
Adelaide Bridge Centre is moving to the Hackney Hotel on 13th November. As part of the move ABC has reduced the number of sessions it will run. This includes there popular Friday afternoon session (almost the same size as SABA’s Friday morning session. The club has decided to run an afternoon session on Fridays to accommodate players who previously played at ABC. This will force a change to the start time for the morning session. Starting on Friday 17th November, Friday sessions times will be:
Morning Session 9.30—12.30
Afternoon Session 1.30—4.30
The club hopes that all members understand the need for this change.

Patron’s Cup
Linda Alexander has been the Patron Emeritus of the club since 1996 and instigated the Patron’s Cup the following year. The Patron’s Cup is generally held in November each year and is contested by all members playing in the supervised sections. This year the Patron’s Cup will be run on Thursday afternoon at Walkerville, with the winners being the pair with the best aggregate score (3 out of 4) over the month. Whilst it is held at Walkerville this year it is open to all supervised players regardless of which session you usually play in. The winners get their names inscribed on a perpetual trophy and Linda also donates a prize to the winning pair. It is a great event and I encourage all supervised players to participate. The event commences Monday night 6th November.
New Year’s Eve Congress
With the Adelaide Bridge Centre’s move to the Hackney Hotel the venue cannot accommodate bridge on Near Years Eve and will hold their event on New Years Day instead.
This means that SABA can hold its own New Years Eve Congress on Sunday 31st December. More details will be available in the next Declarer

No Fear Friday Nights
Friday nights is off to a slow start, but that is not unu-sual when starting out a new session. The club wants to encourage more supervised players to come along. October saw free pizzas and drinks provided and for the rest of the year all supervised players can play for
FREE. All members with less than 15 master-
points can play in the supervised section for FREE. Drinks and nibbles after play will also continue for the rest of the year. Starting in November the Friday
night session will commence at 7pm to allow more time for socialising after play.

Front Garden
Most members will have seen that the Jacarandas have been removed. This was necessary as the pods that they drop were a slip hazard for members with walking frames and other walking disabilities. A new garden will be built to give the club a fresh, modern look. In the coming months the club will need some assistance to rebuild the garden.
This will be done in 4 phases
1. Clean up of existing garden and rubbish removal
2. Installation of a watering system and new soil
3. Planting
If you can help in any of these areas (subject to your availa-bility on the selected day) please place your name against the area you can help on the Noticeboard.

SABA SWISS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS The SABA Swiss Teams championships was contested for the second year and was sponsored AND won by
the Eddie team. Andrew is a generous sponsor of the teams and provided over $2000 in prizemoney. 14

1 victory point. Final placings were:
1st Place—EDDIE Team ($750)
Greg Sargent, Judy Hocking, Kevin Lange and Andrew Eddie
2nd Place—HARMS Team ($500)
Justin Williams, Jeff Travis, Felicity Smyth, Paul Hudson and Russel
Harms
3rd Place—De Luca Team ($350)
Peter Chan, David Lusk, Jarrad Dunbar and Attilio De Luca
4th Place—ZOLLO Team ($250)
Gary Deaton, Marc Deaton, John Zollo and Roger Januske (Absent)
5th Place—Marler Team ($200)
Pam Morgan-King, Yadi Parrott, Therese De Marco
and Di Marler (Absent)
Best Restricted Team—Donoghue Team ($200)
Jenny Donoghue, Susan Fitch, Marjon Martin and Tony Miller
[Editor’s Note: Why is this team so happy? The fact is they were the
only Restricted team in the event and automatically won the $200
prizemoney on offer. Not a bad 3 weeks… Bridge, free pizzas and
wine, nibbles after play and they made a profit!! Let’s see if we can
get more Restricted teams in the 2018 event.

2017 SABA Quiz Night
10 tables of members and friends came to the quiz night in October. Whilst there was a winner there were no losers as food and drinks were in abundance.
Many thanks to this year’s Quizmaster and his team for organising a great night.
Also, thanks to Wendy Hopkins for providing the musical questions and John Smith for doing the photography.
Quiz Night photos are available on the desk outside the office for a small donation to fund raising

This famous deal occurred at the 1962 Nationals, and
at one table the bidding went as shown
West’s four notrump bid asked his partner to bid clubs
or spades. East duly obliged with five spades, raised
by West to six after South bid six diamonds. When
this came around to South he decided to venture seven
diamonds. At this point, while West was cogitating
whether to bid seven spades as a sacrifice, East
doubled out of turn — and promptly led the ace of
trumps to confirm the soundness of his double!
Naturally, the tournament director was summoned. He
ruled that North/South could continue bidding in turn
and, furthermore, that the ace of diamonds was a
penalty card. (If a defender improperly exposes a card
it becomes a penalty card which must be played at the
first legal opportunity.)
South thereupon ran to seven no trumps. He
recognized that seven diamonds was hopeless, but
thought he might be able to make seven notrump with
the aid of the exposed card.
West led a spade. Declarer finessed the jack and then
scored four heart tricks by trapping East’s king. South
had been hoping that East would show out of hearts
and be forced to discard the ace of diamonds, but he
had no such luck. Declarer now led a club to dummy’s king and cashed
the A-K of spades as East continued to follow suit.
Finally, South played a club to the ace, prepared to
concede down four, but at this point East’s luck ran
out. Having no more clubs, he had no choice but to
discard the ace of diamonds, and the slam come
rolling home!!!.
