EDITOR’S NOTE

Namaste,

While, the origins of Yoga have been speculated to date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions, its

development can be traced back to over 5,000 years. Playing a significant role in teaching Yoga as a way

of life, since last 100 years, is The Yoga Institute, the oldest organized center of Yoga in the world. To spread the benefits of Yoga to the entire world, the United Nations proclaimed 21 June as the

International Day of Yoga in 2015. The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, successfully celebrated

1st International Day of Yoga on 21st June, 2015 at Rajpath, New Delhi. It is a matter of great pride that

Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra, Director of The Yoga Institute, Santacruz, was invited to celebrate this

auspicious day with Indian Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Smt. Hansaji was the only lady Yoga

Guru among the four Yoga Gurus conferred with the privilege of sharing the dais with the Prime Minister.

Since its inception, The Yoga Institute has successfully organized the three events of International Day

of Yoga (IDY), which found great enthusiasm and got worldwide support. To up the ante of the 3rd

International Yoga Day 21st June 2017, Yoga sadhakas of The Yoga Institute from over 40 countries,

spanning 500 different locations, celebrated Yoga across the globe. Special Yoga programs were

conducted to cater to people of all age groups, religions, nationalities and social backgrounds at various

studios, schools, hospitals, juvenile centers, old age homes, special children centers, government

organisations, corporate offices, open spaces and more. Yoga is a lifestyle and should not be mistaken for only Asanas. It is an art and science of healthy living. In

this celebratory issue, Hansaji makes it clear that Yoga is not physical culture and Asana can be an

important mean to attain spiritual awareness. Along with giving a clear definition of a Yogi, Dr. Jayadeva

also pens down many do’s and don’ts for Yoga aspirants. The July issue also introduces The Yoga

Institute's corporate offerings, as rebranded, under the brand umbrella of The Yoga Institute Wellness

Practice. Keep celebrating ‘Yoga - A way of life’ in everyday of your life!

Pearls of Wisdom

ittle drops of water make an ocean.

LSimple traits can build character.

Simple body habits can lead to

attitudes. The man with a stooping posture

is not exactly feeling very strong and

vigorous. Lot of beauty is carried about

through posture and graceful movements.

Yoga processes can also be viewed from

this angle. Each Asana builds a certain

physical pattern. This pattern builds a

certain attitude.

A clever teacher of Yoga knows this and

helps the learner to change his personality.

However, this is a slow process needing

work from both sides. The student should

unhurriedly practice Yoga. He or she shall

not be impatient and in hurry. The teacher

too should be interested in the mental and

spiritual health of the learner. Suitable

pauses or intervals are there in Asanas. In

fact Asanas are basically static, but we can

take advantage of the slow movements of

the dynamic part of the Asana to instill the

attitude: One can strengthen this further

in the pause period. The breathing that

goes with the Asana is the third way the

attitude can be further strengthened.

Smt. Hansaji Jayadev Yogendra,Director, The Yoga Institute.

Yoga should be studied in a subtler way as a

Sadhana. It is not physical culture or circus.

In routine drills, one just thoughtlessly

moves the limbs. There is speed, there are

jerks and there is no attention. Everything

goes according to the command of a

whistle or a band or even oral instructions.

One’s attention is externalized.

In Yoga, we interiorize ourselves. We

carefully attend to ourselves, our mind,

our thoughts and all. Yoga is a way of

creating a unity in our whole being and

moving towards a higher goal. Asana could

be an important means for reaching this

spiritual awareness. Asana is not just an

unimportant appendage in Yoga. In Indian

acting and dancing, it is said that eyes

should be focused only on the hands and

the gestures. And again the mind should be

where the eyes are focused. But the most

important thing is that the heart and the

feelings should be directed where the

mind is . Any physical act becomes

enriched when the feelings, the thoughts,

the attention and the activities all merge

together. In the usual kind of Asanas done

mechanically, this does not happen.

05 SATTVA JULY 2017 YOGA

Page 6: Hansaji J. Yogendra PRACTICAL YOGA IN OLD TYI …...conducted to cater to people of all age groups, religions, nationalities and social backgrounds at various studios, schools, hospitals,

In her young days she had been a

famous screen actress. She had a

beautiful face and was very talented.

Here only lament was “I have become very

fat. I know why of course, I eat too much.

But I don’t seem to know how to stop.

Sweets are my downfall.” Her husband was

a medical practitioner and he tried hard to

explain to her the hazards of obesity.

Intellectually she had absorbed all the

warnings but she didn’t seem to have the

will to stop eating in moderation. The years

rolled by and she became more and more

fat. The children grew up and got absorbed

in their various activities. She went on

feeling more and more isolated and

insecure. Her refuge continued to be food.

All the warnings of her husband seem to be

coming true. She had developed diabetes

and a heart problem...What is it drives

people to eat? What is it that while

knowing all the dangers, the little organ-

our tongue leads us onto our doom? Is it

true questions are as diverse as people

themselves? There have been as many

theories about people eat-physical,

emotional, hormonal psychological, social.

Yoga with its straight forward thinking

ground in reality has an answer. It says ‘An

unsteady mind is the culprit’, so do we

come back to Citta vritti nirodha? The

stoppage of the mental modifications

being Yoga? So Yoga works on this problem

from different viewpoints. Setting

priorities and giving an option of a spiritual

base where correct decisions have to be

made, for then, is not the body an

instrument for higher pursuits to be made

perfectly healthy so it does not act as a

burden? Of course, if while getting clarity

in thinking would involve a trip to the

doctor who might say that there are

hormonal problems, the mind should be

willing to attend to that. One should also

not on the other hand take refuge in the

hormones as an excuse of over indulging. It

is all a matter of balance.

Are we balancing our scales and the

scales of values?

Adhyatmika i.e. mental and Adhidaivika i.e.

e n v i r o n m e n t a l . T h e A d h i b h o u t i k a

(physical) causes are due to faulty actions

and wrong food. The Adhyatmika (mental)

is cause by defective thought processes.

The Adhidaivika (environmental) is

because of natural calamities-which is said

to be due to our fate. All of this either alone

or in combination creates stress.

The Yogic life-style is an effective method

of stress management. The mental

modification is neutral; it is only our faulty

perception and erroneous cognition which

causes the problem.

There are some tendencies of the mind like

t h e Ta m a s i c ( d u l l ) ; t h e R a j a s i c

(hyperactive); the Sattvic (steady &

positive). In a given person, all these three

tendencies are present in different

proportions. The personality complex

(Citta Bhumi) of the individual depends

upon the predominant tendency.

Personality complex- Mudha (disoriented),

Ksipta (disturbed), Vikshipta (disturbed but

occasionally concentrated) and Ekagra

( f u l l y c o n c e n t r a t e d ) a r e t h e f o u r

personality complexes.

We are born with afflictions like Asmita

(ego), Raga (attachment), Dvesa (aversion)

and Abhinivesa (fear of death). These are

called as Klesas. These Klesas can distort

the perception of a given situation leading

to erroneous cognition called Avidya.

Avidya leads to poor tendencies and state

of mind.

Unless and until some seeds of good

experiences start sprouting suffering will

continue.

Management

• Achara- Right conduct

• Vichara- Right thinking

• Ahara- Right food

• Vihara - Right recreation

• Asanas- Education of the physical

• Kriyas- Cleansing processes

• Pranayamas- Respiratory practices

• Mudras- Psychosomatic practices

Achara- Yoga advocates early to bed and

early to rise. The science studies have

proved that levels of anabolic hormones

are more during the early hours of the

night and levels of catabolic hormones are

more during late hours of night.

Proper yoga exercise regime is helpful in

maintaining good health. Keeping the right

routines will set the homeostasis and the

biological clock.

Vichara- Setting up the right thinking

process in proper Samskaras makes a

difference. In Vichara Yoga advocates the

following aspects -

• Faith- Total faith and surrender to

higher reality.

• Objectified with the situation-Yoga if

practiced regularly can help to create a

witness-like attitude.

• Balanced state of mind- In every

situation.

• Duty- Most of the people fail in duty

towards themselves, i.e. towards their

physical, mental, social and spiritual needs.

Ahara- Sattvic food can generate good and

positive feelings. It can shift the mind into a

better state.

Vihara- Adopt hobbies like gardening,

music etc. Recreational games played in

the family have got their own role. We are

not able to let go and mind wants to hold

on. Mastering of the relaxation techniques

can be a right solution for the above

problem.

The techniques like Asanas, Kriyas,

Mudras and Pranayamas have got an

important role to relieve stress.

Asanas are attitude bound. They improve

the flexibility and joint mobility. Positive

experience of physical health gets

generated.

Kriyas are internal cleansing processes.

They positively optimize the organ

function leading to better experiences.

Pranayama is regulation of the breath. And

breathing rate is in turn related to state of

m i n d . T h e s e p ra c t i c e s w h e n d o n e

regularly positively improve respiratory

functions, cellular metabolism and healthy

emotions.

Mudras help in improving neuromuscular-

consciousness.

Perseverance in philosophy of better living

and Yoga techniques are the right means for

stress management.

reality a very worldly type of a person, in

student of Yoga, activities and actions

become means of self-development. For

one who has attained understanding and

mental tranquillity, actions flow such

insight of effortless and selfless nature.

One should persevere positively by

himself and avoid negative thoughts. One

should thus engage himself in altruistic

work. Our mind, thoughts and even our

whole personality can be used for our

highest good by thinking positively;

otherwise our whole personality becomes

our great enemy, when we start thinking

negatively.

The Yoga aspirant should continuously

strive in a quiet place to control his mind

and remain free of desires and ego trips.

Sitting on a suitable mat, in silence and in a

meditative posture, he should make his

mind one-pointed and stop all sense

activities, keeping his body erect and fixing

his gaze on the tip of his nose. Such an

aspirant should believe in self-realisation

as his highest goal. He should place his

faith and mind on what is highest and gain

peace which only comes from oneness

with the highest.

It is said that Yoga is not for one who is

given to extremes, e.g., not for one who

overeats or under-eats, or for one who

sleeps too much or does not sleep at all.

Yoga is for one who has proper control

over his food and his actions, over his sleep

and his wakeful states. Such a one gains the

very highest. A simile is provided of a flame

of lamp which is placed in a breezeless

spot. When a spiritual seeker has control

over his mind and has placed self-

realisation as his goal, he is compared to

such a flame that does not flicker.

Gradually the ego trips cease, mental

projections are reduced and pain and

pleasure sensations diminish. One is

unmoved even by the greatest amount of

pain and does not consider anything

worthwhile than the tranquillity of mind

and enlightenment gained therefrom. At

this stage, there is very little of thinking

necessary. One is in a state of great

contentment and self-sufficiency devoid

of any physical or mental movements.

Having reached such a state, one ceases to

distinguish himself from either the highest

or the lowest. The mind has to be

c o n t r o l l e d b y p e r s e v e r a n c e a n d

disinterestedness. Gaining of such an

attitude is regarded not as easy. One who

has no control over his impulses is

therefore least likely to progress in Yoga,

although it could be said that a sincere

aspirant even while not successful in

grappling with his mind has at least already

made some progress in so far as he has

started on his path. Such a one does not fall

from his position.

The Yogi is according placed higher than an

ascetic or a philosopher, and therefore it is

said in the old books that a sincere student

even though initially not successful has, as

a matter of fact, succeeded since he has

ceased to be a worldly seeker. People born

in a yogic home or who possess such

qualifications of non-worldliness are

themselves already on a higher spiritual

level than others.

Yoga Celebrates Life

Yoga is proof-based and Yoga Guru

Smt. Hansaji Yogendra and Dr.

Jayadeva Yogendra are living proof

on how everyone can practice yoga while

living amidst the world. More than most of

us have gone through our lives paying

attention mostly to the exterior rather

than focusing on what is within and by far

that matters the most.

The mysteries of Gods, Goddesses

through the sages and gurus for centuries

have distilled the yoga knowledge from

the sacred texts; so that common man can

use it as an effective tool to provide

greater meaning to life and pave the way to

achieve the ultimate higher reality.

Yoga as a way of life simplifies things for

better living. We all have problems in life

and we are going to face obstacles in life.

One way is to pack up everything and go to

the Himalayas to discover the peaceful

way of living or accept the challenges and

stay within this world and learn to

overcome them.

It is not possible for everyone to go the

Himalayas and I am sure ninety-nine per

cent of us have to live in this world with our

share of responsibilities and face the

challenges to fulfill them.

We have to stay in this world and learn to

tolerate considering the fact exterior

might be wrong, but I will accept this and

start looking at it with an open mind. Yoga

will bring in the desired wisdom and take

you to the next level of acceptance. Once

you learn acceptance then slowly, you will

notice that maybe it’s just another way of

thinking and handling things. So you see

this is how yoga brings in desired change at

the mind level.

This blissful state of awareness leads you

to a dimension where you start enjoying

life to the fullest. So you see the changes

are required within to withstand the

obstacles in life yet thrive with a balanced

state of mind by overcoming these

obstacles. Blissful Awareness at the mind

and body level brings in happiness so that

we can enjoy all instances in life with

astute calmness. Happiness is the most

natural state of any human being.

Thus to conclude, need is to look with an

open mind; so in every difficulty, you see

opportunity and let it resonate from mind

t o b o d y - l eve l s o t h a t t h i s b l i s s f u l

awareness throughout can convert each

and every moment of your life into

celebrations… yoga teaches us that!

YOGASATTVA

“No gift is greater than the gift of knowledge.”

Shri Yogendra - Father of

Modern Yoga Renaissance

Shri Yogendra systematized the Asanas, which are

nowhere clearly and unequivocally described in all

their details in the old literature. Knowing that the

static execution of Asanas as practiced by Yoga adepts

of old was not feasible nor even advisable for Yoga

beginners, he introduced the dynamic execution. Most

important he formulated a certain breathing pattern to

be practiced in coordination with bodily movements

when doing the Asanas. He further formulated a safe

course of nine Pranayamas of an ascending order of

difficulty. He devised a relaxation practice, Yogendra

Nispanda Bhava, which is a great gift to today's many

unrelaxed people. Of the Kriya's the hygiene practices

of Hatha Yoga, he selected safe ones and standardised

them. For the theoretical & intellectual basis of this

great knowledge, he chose the 'Yoga Sutra" of Patanjali

which was compiled some 2000 years ago but is now

valid as it ever was and will ever be.

Founder, Shri Yogendraji
